WEAVING STARTER KIT
Weaving frame small 50cm (19")
Assembly
The weaving frame fits together easily. The
warp will hold it together, there is no need for
glue or nails.
Slide the short ends into the long ends.
Make sure the long shallow groove is to the
outside.
Warping
Lay the loom on a table. Tie a knot making
a small loop to place over the first slot. Take
the warp thread to the opposite end and go
around slot and back, repeat going back and
forth for full width. Tie a knot making a loop
to secure over last slot.
Designing Your Masterpiece
You can weave freeform - design as you go, changing the colours, yarns and fibres as you desire. Or draw a design on a piece of paper the
size of your weaving space. Following the design on your paper, carefully mark the pattern onto the warp threads using a marker pen.
Useful Hints
* When placing in the weft threads,
make little hills with the yarn across
the row.
* Beat the threads into place with a
tapestry beater, a dinner fork or use
your fingertips.
Changing colours
* To start and finish each colour leave
out 2-3cm (1") weft thread at the back
of the work.
* Each thread fits together into the
woven structure like a jigsaw puzzle,
only the weft is visible.
* When one square sits beside
another there will be a clear line.
Do not interlock the threads.
Plain weave
* Start on the left: using the wooden needle,
weave over one, under one, across the warp
threads. Return from the right across the
warp in the opposite, under one, over one.

Instructions
Assemble and warp your loom. Weave using the yarns and fibre included to create your
own unique piece of art. Yarn included in starter kit is sufficient to complete the project –
individual results may vary due to techniques used. We recommend beating weft gently.
When woven, remove from the loom and place dowel through the loops at the top of your
project.

Rya Knot
* Try to mix different materials
e.g. fleece, wool sliver,
cotton shoelace, fancy
yarn... by using the knot.
* Be creative – use different
textures of yarn – handspun
fibre is great! Spin chunky
singles or novelty yarns.
Texture - Fibre and Fabric
* Using the wooden needle,
loosely weave a plain weave
row of fibre or fabric through
the warp threads. Using your
fingertips or the wooden
needle pull loops up where
desired.
Make small butterflies
This is used instead of a shuttle, when
using many colours. The yarn automatically
unwinds from the centre as you weave.
1. To make a butterfly, first place the end
between the middle and ring finger of
either hand leaving a tail.
2. Keeping your fingers slightly spread,
stack the revolutions one on top of another.
3. Leave the last wrap
loose and slip the end
of the yarn through the
loop, then pull the end
until it is snug.
Soumak
* Start on the left: using the
wooden needle, take the
yarn over 2 warp threads (to
the right) and back under
these 2 threads (to the left),
over 4 threads (to the right)
and back under 2 threads.
Repeat over 4, under 2
across row.
Patterned - Under one, over two
* Start on the left: using the
wooden needle, weave under
the first thread, then over
two, under one, across the
warp threads. Return from the
right across the warp in the
opposite, under one, over two.
Note: Ensure you always catch
the end thread for neat edges.
