Welcome to the Hack the World-network!
This manual is based on the recommended router, model:
ASUS RT-AC52U.
The next pages show each step you need to take in order to
setup the router correctly, based on this recommended
model.
If you want to use a different router, you can. Please make
sure the router offers a ‘DNS* settings’ or ‘whitelisting’
feature.
The settings interface for different models are likely to differ
from the interface shown in this manual.
*DNS stands for Domain Name System and converts IP-address: a unique
number for each computer, network and website connected to the
internet, to domain names like hacktheworld.se. This makes it easier for
people to remember how to get to certain websites instead of have to
remember the specific IP-address of each website.
17
Step 1
Connect the router to a network
1. Plug the AC adapter to the back of the router (A).
2. Plug the ethernet cable into the blue plug on the
back of the router (B) (Only the blue plug will work).
3. Plug the other end of the ethernet cable into a LAN
port of your already existing network.
4. Press the power button (C).
5. The lights on the front side of the router will turn
blue when the router is correctly installed.
18
Get to the router settings software
1. It takes a few minutes for the router to create a WIFI
network when you’re starting it for the first time.
Wait for the WIFI network to appear.
2. The default name of the router is ASUS_A8_2G. You’ll
find the WIFI network through your computers WIFI
settings.
3. If the router has the default settings it will
automatically take you to the quick internet setup if
you open a web browser. In the case it would not,
you can type [http://192.168.1.1] into the browser’s
searchfield, and push enter in your browser.
4. This will lead you to a login page for your router's
system settings.
Step 2
19
Step 3
Login (or Sign in) the routers software
●As default the name and password to the router will
be: admin.
You can find this information in the bottom of the devices,
or in the manual that came with your device.
Step 4
Create an admin
1. When you have logged in, you need to create a new
admin account and password for the router.
○Keeping the default login & password
(¨admin¨) is a security risk.
2. Choose a new Login Name and Password of choice,
and be sure to note it down, so you don’t forget it.
* 5 GHz is a secondary wifi connection which has a longer range (how far you can
be from the wifi and still be connected) and faster bandwidth (How fast the wifi
is updating). You can use the same NetWork Name, and add ‘_5G’ to it.
Change wifi name and password
The standard WIFI Network Name is named after the make
and model of the device. For our users to find this
connection, we need to change the name of the WIFI
network.
1. Click on the button named ‘Router Setup’. You will
open a window that looks like the one depicted on
the right.
2. Select the NetWork Name (SSID) input field and
change it to “Hack the world play”.
3. Everyone is allowed to access this network, so leave
the ‘Password’ input field blank. No password is
needed to connect to this network.
4. Do the same for the 5 GHz network.
5. Press “Apply” to confirm the new names.
Step 5
Network Configuration Summary
1. After applying the changes, you will be forwarded to
a screen that looks like the image on the right.
2. Make sure all the information is correct.
3. If all the information is correct, click on the
‘Complete’ button to finish this part of the setup.
Step 6
23
Network Configuration Summary
When you click ‘complete’ you will see this success screen.
Change DNS settings
1. Go to Advanced settings > LAN > DHCP Server in
the left navigation. You will land on a page that looks
like the image on the right.
Step 7
25
Change DNS settings
In order to filter content that is allowed, and block content
that is not allowed, we need to change the DNS settings.
These settings represent a connection to a computer in
between this router and the open internet. This computer
helps us to filter the good from the bad.
1. In the Basic config window, change IP Pool
Starting Address to [192.168.1.2] and IP Pool Ending
Address to [192.168.1.254].
2. In DNS and WINS Server Setting window, change
DNS Server to [208.67.220.220].
3. When you’ve changed IP Pools and DNS server, go
down to the bottom of the page and press Apply.
Important note: After applying, these new settings are
installed on the router. This step can take a couple of
minutes before it is completed.
Step 8
26
Change DNS settings
1. Go to WAN > Internet Connection > WAN DNS
Setting.
2. Change “Connect to DNS Server automatically” to
“No”.
Step 9
27
Change DNS settings
1. Two textboxes will appear when “no” is activated.
2. Add [208.67.220.220] to DNS Server1 and add
[208.67.222.222] to DNS Server2.
3. Go to the bottom of the page and press Apply.
When the router is done installing the new settings, we’ve
done the last setting in order to make the router send
information to OpenDNS. This leads us to start setting up
OpenDNS to communicate to the router. First we need to
make a login to OpenDNS.
The routers IP address needs to be sent to who ever is
handing the openDNS account to be added to the list.
Step 10
Congratulations!
You now have restricted
internet.
FAQ
I have forgotten my username and password for the routers
admin.
What do do:
1. Reset the router to factory settings. Most routers have a
hidden button called “Reset” on the back of the router.
Hold it in for 30 seconds and release. This will reset the
routers admin login back to default.
2. Make sure to save the new admin and password again
when you’re doing the quick internet setup again.
