1General Overview
The AS5215 is a redundant contact ess rotary encoder
sensor for accurate angu ar measurement over a fu turn
of 360º and over an extended ambient temperature range
of - 40ºC…+150ºC.
Based on an integrated Ha e ement array, the angu ar
position of a simp e two-po e magnet is trans ated into
ana og output vo tages. The ang e information is provided
by means of buffered sine and cosine vo tages. This
approach gives maximum f exibi ity in system design, as
it can be direct y integrated into existing architectures and
optimized for various app ications in terms of speed and
accuracy.
An SSI Interface is imp emented for signa path
configurations, as we as a one time programmab e
register b ock (OTP), which a ows the customer to adjust
the signa path gain for different mechanica constraints
and magnetic fie ds.
2The AS5215 Demoboard
The AS5215 demoboard is a comp ete rotary encoder system with bui t-in microcontro er, USB interface, and graphica
LCD disp ay. The board is USB powered or externa y supp ied with a 9V battery for standa one operation.

3Operating the AS5215 Demoboard
The AS5215 demoboard can be used in severa ways:
•A tandalone unit upplied by a 9V battery
Connect a 9V battery to the battery connector on the top right side of the board. No other connections are
required.
•A tandalone unit upplied by an USB port
Connect the demoboard to a PC using a USB/USB cab e (inc uded in demoboard shipment). The board is
supp ied by the 5V supp y of the USB port. No other connections are required.
•A input device for the AS5000 Programmer GUI oftware
This configuration uses the same USB hardware connection as mentioned above, but additiona y the AS5000
Programmer GUI software is running. The LCD disp ay wi be turned off and the Ang e/Sine/Cosine va ue wi
be disp ayed on the PC screen.

3.1 Hardware Indicator
3.1.1 Graphic LCD di play
The LCD disp ay shows the rea -time abso ute ang e position of the magnet as a digita word (0…360), as we as the
current sine and cosine va ue of the output vo tage.
Turning the knob c ockwise wi increase the ang e va ue unti 359, then 0.

3.1.2 EXT LED
The EXT LED indicates whether the interna (on board) AS5215 or an externa device is used and which va ues are
shown on the disp ay. By switching S2 to the right side the LED is turned on and one can use an externa AS5215 by
connecting it at P1.
The header P1 is pin compatib e with the AS5215-AB.
4AS5000 Programmer GUI oftware
4.1 In talling the GUI on the PC
The pre iminary software is deve oped for a Microsoft Windows XP operating system with Service Pack 2. In addition
the dotnet (.NET) framework version 2.0 or more must be insta ed on the PC. This package can be down oaded free of
charge from the Microsoft webpage:

Fo owing Procedure is recommended before starting the GUI:
1. check on your PC if Service Pack 2 is insta ed
2. insta the mentioned .NET package to your computer
3. execute setup.exe
4. Fina y start the GUI using the shortcut in the start menu or desktop.
4.2 The Home tab
Figure 3 shows the main window of the GUI. On the top eft corner, board information as firmware (FW) version and
demoboard name dec aration can be found.
By defau t the GUI is in the auto detection mode. Any connected austriamicrosystems demoboard and programming too wi
be automatica y detected and disp ayed in the right top corner. The GUI is divided into three main sections HOME, TWI and
OTP.
By se ecting the TWI (AS5215 bidirectiona seria protoco ) tab, the information of the angu ar position appears. See figure 4.

4.3 The TWI tab
This mode disp ays in rea time the ang e va ue, Mu titurn register va ue, AGC va ue and the UVW signa status.

The Read Interval can be modified from 10 ms (fastest) to 1 s (s owest).
By c icking on Digita Interface, a new window opens, and a ows the user to write direct y into the AS5215
registers. See chapter 4.4.

The Digita interface window a ows accessing the interna registers of the AS5215:
The parameters don’t need to be checked manua y in the “Bits” window on the right, but can be set by the “Fie ds” and
“Options for the se ected bits” va ues. The corresponding bits wi be checked automatica y.
To va idate the command, the Execute Write button bust be c icked.

4.5 OTP tab
The OTP tab is norma y used for the AS5000 programmer, but the OTP bits can be changed on the AS5215 demoboard as
we .
Options ike gain and Ha bias can be changed by se ecting the function in “Fields”, then changing the parameter in “Options
for the selected field” or direct y the decima va ue of this parameter in “Value”.
By switching from Die 0 to Die 1, one has access to the second device.
Each time a fie d’s va ue has been changed, the corresponding OTP bits wi be automatica y checked in the right window.
The button Write shou d be c icked to write the parameter into the AS5215.
The Read button reads back the OTP register, and updates the “Fie d” parameter as we as the OTP bits window.

Field Gain: Sets the gain of the interna signa path.
-0: Sensitivity = 1.65

Field Hall Bia : To change the Ha Bias current:

Note that the Zap! button is used for the AS5000 Programmer on y and has no effect on the AS5215 Demoboard.
