Setting Up Your Litter-Robot
1. Place the Litter-Robot in the same room as the old
litter box, if possible.
2. Put the Globe on the Base as shown in the picture.
Make sure that the track on the Globe engages with
the gear in the Base unit.
3. Plug the small round connector from the AC adapter
into the socket on the Base unit. Next, plug the
main power cord into a wall outlet. The Litter-
Robot will perform a cleaning cycle. After
completing the cycle (this takes about 3 minutes),

the Globe should be in the “home” position with the
green light on.
At this point, the Litter-Robot is ready to be filled
with litter. However, if you want to make sure that
your cats ease into this new experience, you may
want to leave the Litter-Robot unplugged for a few
days to give your cats sufficient time to get
accustomed to the Litter-Robot. See the next
section, “Getting Your Cat to Use the Litter-Robot”,
for the procedure with the highest probability of
success.
Getting Your Cat to Use the Litter-Robot
Most likely, your cat will quickly adapt to a new litter
box. We recommend the following procedure for the
best results of getting your cat acclimated:
• Place the Litter-Robot in the same room as the
current litter box. Set up according to instructions
and unplug it from the wall after the Litter-Robot
has completed the initialization cycle. Allow your
cats a day or so to explore the Litter-Robot. If your
cats show no interest, you can entice them to
approach the Litter-Robot by using catnip or their
favorite treat.
• After your cats are at ease with the Litter-Robot, you
can start filling the Litter-Robot. Fill the Litter-Robot
with clean litter according to the instructions (read
the next section), and then add a scoop of litter

from the old box to the clean litter bed. Once your
cat uses the new litter box, cycle the unit manually
by simply plugging the unit in. If the cats are
present, it will give them a chance to observe the
motion and listen to the sound of the Litter-Robot
while you are present to reassure them. Unplug the
power cord again after the cleaning cycle has been
completed (the Litter-Robot should be in the home
position). Once the Litter-Robot has been used by
your cats, do not clean the old litter box.
• If your cats are not using the Litter-Robot within a
few days, continue using the old brand of litter in
the old litter box, and let it go as long as possible
without cleaning it. You may want to consider
replacing the litter with a kind of litter specifically
formulated for litter box training.
• Once your cats are consistently using the Litter-
Robot, you can plug in the unit and allow it to
operate in unattended automatic mode.
• You can now remove the old litter box.
Congratulations, you have successfully introduced your
cats to the Litter-Robot. Enjoy your freedom from litter
box scooping!

Filling the Litter-Robot with Litter
Clumping clay litter is recommended. This type of litter
will have the words “clumping” or “scoopable” on the
bag or container.
DO NOT USE CLAY LITTER THAT DOES NOT
CLUMP.
The Litter-Robot is also compatible with World’s Best Cat
Litter, Litter Pearls, and crystals. If you are using a litter
alternative not listed here, you may wish to contact us at
help@litter-robot.com to make sure you are using a
compatible litter.
1. Make sure the Litter-Robot power cord is plugged in
and that the Globe is in the home position.
2. You can add litter to the Globe in two ways. Details
are shown in Steps 3 and 4.
a. Filling through the entrance opening
For this method the Globe should be in
the home position.
b. Filling through the waste ports (square
holes)
For this method, you will need to rotate
the waste ports to the top for more
convenient filling.

3. Filling through the entrance opening
Make sure that the Globe is in the home position.
Scoop approximately 9 lb or 1 ½ gallons (whichever
is less) of litter in the Globe. If you over-fill, the
excess litter will be expelled during the first few
cleaning cycles.
With the Globe in the home position, the litter level
should not be higher than about 2 inches below the
bottom rim of the entrance opening.
You can run a cleaning cycle manually by pressing
the “Cycle” button on the Control Panel. Any
excess litter will be expelled and the litter bed will
be leveled at the end of the cycle.
4. Filling through the waste ports (square holes)
Make sure that the Globe is in the home position.
Press the Fill button on the Control Panel. The
Globe will rotate counter clockwise bringing the
waste ports (square holes) to the top for easy
filling. Once the waste ports have reached the top,
press the Fill button again to stop the rotation.
Pour approximately 9 lb or 1 ½ gallons (whichever
is less) of litter in the Globe, through the waste
ports (the square holes). If you over-fill, the excess
litter will be expelled during the first few cleaning
cycles.
After you have filled the Globe with litter, press any
of the three buttons on the Control Panel to make
the Globe return to its home position. The litter
bed is leveled during this motion. With the Globe in

the home position, the litter level should not be
higher than about 2 inches below the bottom rim of
the entrance opening.
5. If this is the first time you filled the Litter-Robot and
are trying to get your cats acclimated, you can pour
a cup of used litter from the old litter box on top of
the new litter in the Litter-Robot. This will provide
a familiar scent for your cat. See the section “How
to Get Your Cat to Use the Litter-Robot” for more
tips.
NOTE
During the first few days of operation the plastic Globe
may exhibit a high degree of static charge. Litter will
cling to all interior surfaces of the Globe. Clinging litter
will eventually be released, but not necessarily at an
ideal moment causing some granules to bounce out
through the waste ports or the entrance opening during
the clean cycle. The static should subside within a few
cycles.

Installing Garbage Bags in the Waste
Drawer
Your Litter-Robot is shipped with one 13 gallon trash
bag pre-installed plus two extra trash bags. Standard 8
gallon trash bags also work well. The standard 13
gallon bags were chosen due to the ideal perimeter size
of the opening, availability, and low cost. For
convenience, there is a space at the front of the Drawer
for storing a roll of bags.
To install a 13 gallon trash bag in the waste drawer,
open the bag and slide the rim of the bag behind the
four mounting clips in the drawer. Make sure that the
opening of the bag is taut and that it covers the entire
perimeter between the four mounting clips.

How the Cat Sensor Works
The Litter-Robot Cat Sensor is a weight sensitive switch
that detects your cat when it enters or exits the Globe.
Your cat must be at least five (5) lbs for the
sensor to work. Do not use the Litter-Robot with
kittens or cats that weigh less than five lbs.
A seven minute count-down is started upon the cat
leaving the Globe. The Litter-Robot starts its cleaning
cycle at the end of the count-down. Any subsequent
tripping of the Cat Sensor will start a new seven minute
count-down, preventing the Globe from rotating with
your cat inside.
Testing the Cat Sensor
1. Make sure that the Litter-Robot is ready to be
activated (the green light should be on).
2. Next, press down on the step on the drawer and
then release it. The red light should be on.
3. Cancel the red light by pressing any button. The
green light should now be on, indicating that the
Litter-Robot is again OK and waiting. If the red light
does not go off, there may be too much litter in the
Globe or the Cat Sensor switch may be
contaminated (see Troubleshooting Guide).
4. Caution: Please make sure that your smallest
cat is heavy enough to trip the weight sensor
before allowing the Litter-Robot to operate in
unattended automatic mode.

Adjusting the Cat Sensor
The Cat Sensor is set at the factory for a cat weight of
five (5) pounds. If you need to adjust the sensor’s
sensitivity for your cat, this section provides detailed,
step-by-step instructions.
Adjusting the Cat Sensor is quite easy. You will need a
pair of pliers or a small wrench.
1. Unplug the power cord. Remove the waste
drawer by pulling it out.
2. Locate the sensor at the front and in the center
of the bottom of the Base. You will see two
wires and a lock nut.
3. Remove the nut using pliers or wrench, hold the
loose wire as you remove the nut.
4. Remove the wire that was held in place by the
nut.
5. The next visible item on top looks like a flat
silver disc. If you press down on the Base, you

17
will see that it is actually a threaded cylinder
with an extended lip at the top, called a T-nut.
The Cat Sensor sensitivity is adjusted by turning
this T-nut.
INCREASE SENSITIVITY
(If the cat is not triggering the Litter-Robot to cycle,
green light stays on):
Turn the T-nut one-half turn counter clockwise.
This will loosen the spring a little and make the
sensor more sensitive.
DECREASE SENSITIVITY
(If the green light won't come on, red light flashing)
Turn the T-nut one-half turn clockwise. This will
tighten the spring and make the sensor less
sensitive.
Now, you need to put it back together:
Put the loose wire harness back on, centering it over the
bolt as best you can. Replace the nut (flat side down)
and hand tighten. Hold the wire again while you finish
tightening the nut with a pliers or wrench.
You may have to adjust the sensitivity a few times until
you "tweak" it just right to the specific setting that
works for your cat.

Safety Features
Cat Re-Entry Protection Mode
If your cat tries to enter the Litter-Robot and activates
the Cat Sensor during a cleaning cycle, the Globe will
stop rotating. The Litter-Robot will wait for 15 seconds
and then attempt to resume the cleaning cycle. If the
Cat Sensor continues to be activated the Globe will not
turn.
The Cat Re-entry Protection is not active during
the Litter-Robot initialization cycle (first cycle
after plugging in the power cord). Do not leave
the Litter-Robot unattended during the
initialization.
Globe/Motor jammed or obstructed
If the Globe becomes jammed, the motor will stop and
all three lights on the Control Panel will blink at a rate of
twice per second.
• Unplug the power cord
• Remove the obstruction
• Reposition the Globe in the home position
• Plug the power cord back in. The Litter-Robot
will perform an initialization cycle.
If the condition persists, please call Customer Service,

Cleaning & Maintenance
The Litter-Robot requires no special maintenance. It is
recommended that you do not lubricate the Teflon glide
buttons on the Base unit. Lubricating these glide
buttons will allow dirt to build up.
Before you clean the Litter-Robot please make sure that
you remove all litter from the Globe - wet litter turns
into messy clay.
To remove the litter, press the “Empty” button on the
Control Panel. The Globe will rotate clockwise and the
litter will be discharged into the waste drawer. If some
litter remains in the Globe, you may need to push it out
manually, or turn the Globe to get all the litter out.
Globe
After removing litter from the Globe, clean with
water and a mild soap. There are no electronic
components in the Globe which can be damaged by
soap and water. If the Globe has become extremely
dirty, it can be soaked or cleaned with a water hose.
For routine cleaning, a damp soapy rag is probably
sufficient and will allow the Globe to dry quickly.
Drawer
The drawer can be removed and cleaned with soap
and water.
Base
Never submerge the Base. Wipe surfaces of the
Base with a cloth dampened with a disinfectant.
The Cat Sensor Switch (located at the front of the

Troubleshooting
1. Lights on the Control Panel are blinking once per
second
If the Globe cannot find the home position, all
three lights on the Control Panel will blink at a
rate of once per second. Make sure the Litter-
Robot is on a level surface. If the condition
persists, please call Customer Service.
2. Red light on the Control Panel is flashing
If the Cat Sensor setting is too sensitive, or if
the switch is dirty, the red light on the Control
Panel will flash at a rate of once per second.
The Globe will not rotate until the Cat Sensor
sensitivity is set properly, or the switch has been
cleaned. Before adjusting the sensitivity, make
sure that you do not have too much litter in the
Globe. The maximum litter level is 2” below the
bottom rim of the cat’s entrance opening.
To adjust the Cat Sensor sensitivity, see the
section “Adjusting the Cat Sensor” in this
manual.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my cat actually go inside the Globe?
Cats are generally curious and will want to
investigate a new object within the household.
Cats that are already used to a covered litter
box may be quicker to investigate. We
recommend that the Litter-Robot be placed
where the old litter box used to be. The old
litter box can be left near the Litter-Robot for a
short time. Then, take a cup of litter from the
old box and add it to the clean litter in the
Litter-Robot. The scent will be familiar, and the
cat will be inclined to investigate. Once your cat
has ventured inside and feels the litter under its
paws, it will know what to do. Please read the
section “Getting Your Cat to Use Litter-Robot” in
this manual.
Can kittens use the Litter-Robot?
We do not recommend that kittens use the
Litter-Robot unattended because their low
weight may not activate the Cat Sensor. Cats
should be at least five lbs. before using the
Litter-Robot in the automatic mode.
CAUTION: Leave the Litter-Robot
unplugged and only start the cleaning
cycle in manual mode (see “Getting Your
Cat to use the Litter-Robot”) until you are
sure that all cats in the household are
heavy enough to trip the Cat Sensor.

What happens if my cat won't use it?
If you and your cat are not completely satisfied,
you can return your Litter-Robot within 30 days
of purchase for a full refund of the purchase
price (less S&H).
What happens if my cat tries to enter the Globe
while it is rotating?
The Cat Sensor will detect the presence of your
cat and turn off the motor. The Litter-Robot will
pause 15 seconds before resuming the clean
cycle.
Note: This safety feature is not active
during the Litter-Robot’s initialization
cycle. Do not leave the Litter-Robot
unattended during this initial cycle.
Are there any rakes, mechanisms, or wires inside
the Globe?
No – the Globe does not contain any
mechanisms or wires that could hurt or harm
your cat. The Litter-Robot was designed with
your cat’s safety in mind.
Are the electronics or power source dangerous to
my cat?
No, the Litter-Robot operates on 12 VDC, using
an AC adapter very similar to the ones you may
have at home for a clock radio, or for charging
your cell phone. All electrical components are
located in the Base, away from where the cat

could reach them. There are no electrical
components inside the Globe.
Will the Globe turn while my cat is inside?
No, the Globe will not turn while your cat is
inside. The Cat Sensor is tripped each time a
cat enters or re-enters the Globe, resetting the
timer to prevent the cleaning cycle from starting
for another seven minutes.
What happens if the Globe jams?
The motor is turned off automatically if the
Globe jams or an excessive load condition
occurs.
Does the Litter-Robot require special litter?
No, the Litter-Robot does not require special
litter. In fact, the Litter-Robot works fine with
all clay-Based clumping litters and with a
variety of litter alternatives including litter beads
and pearls. Litters that do not work are the
strictly absorbent clay-Based, non-clumping
litters.
Does the Litter-Robot work with Feline Pine?
No, the pellet size of Feline Pine is too large to
pass through the sifting screen.
How much litter do I need to put in the Litter-
Robot?
Typically you can start with no more than 9 lbs.
Make sure that the maximum litter level is no

higher than 2 inches below the bottom rim of
the entry opening (with the Litter-Robot in the
home position). Since the litter bed is cleaned
during every cycle, there is no need to put
excessive litter in the Globe.
How often do I need to add litter?
Experience shows that with two small cats
(approx. 8 lbs. each), litter needs to be added
about once a month, and sometimes it goes
longer than that. Litter-Robot is very efficient in
its use of litter since the patented sifting
mechanism only removes the clumps.
Is dust a problem with the frequent revolving of
the Globe and the movement of the litter?
No, dust is no problem. The slow rotation of the
Globe combined with the mesh size of the
filtering screen result in negligible agitation of
the litter.
How often do I need to empty the drawer?
This depends on the number and size of your
cats. For two average sized cats, once or twice
per week is typical. For a single cat, once per
week is usually sufficient.
How often do I have to clean the inside of the
Litter-Robot Globe?
How often the Litter-Robot needs cleaning
depends on your personal preference and your
cat’s behavior. However, it is recommended to

clean the inside of the Globe every one to three
months.
How do I clean the Litter-Robot exterior?
Cleaning the Litter-Robot exterior is easy. Just
remove the Globe and the drawer and give them
a sponge bath, or take them outside for deep
cleaning with the garden hose. All other
surfaces can be wiped clean but should not be
submerged.
CAUTION: The base of the Litter-Robot
contains electrical components and is not
meant to be submerged or wet. See the
“Cleaning the Litter-Robot” section for more
details.
