1 Introduction
This manua describes how to use the WF900i - Internet radio, an advanced but easy-to-use Wi-Fi connected
audio system with the fo owing modes:
Its main functions are to:
Internet Radio with access to over 20,000 stations, “Listen again” broadcasts and podcasts,
Music p ayer a owing easy navigation and p ayback through a USB or network-stored ibrary of music
fi es inc uding AAC+, Rea audio*, MP3 and WMA,
DAB/DAB+ digita radio with a wide choice of channe s and digita qua ity sound broadcast free-to-air,
FM with RDS (Radio Data System),
iPod dock with iPod contro /recharge and video output (with authentication coprocessor for maximum
compatibi ity),
Aux in for externa music sources such as MP3 p ayers.
* Rea audio with COOK codec support in internet radio.

1.1 Conventions used in this guide
The fo owing conventions are used in this guide:

1.2 Infrastructure requirements
The fo owing infrastructure must be ready to fu y uti ise the functiona ity avai ab e on WF-900i (as shown in
Figure 1).
a power source (100-240 V mains supp y),
a wire ess (Wi-Fi) network (provided through a router) with appropriate permissions and password if
necessary (for Internet radio and Network Music player modes),
broadband Internet access (for Internet radio mode and Internet Software Update),
a music ibrary stored on the network or on a USB mass storage device (for Music player modes),
an App e iPod (for iPod mode, any mode ),
an externa audio source (for Aux in mode).

2 Menu structure
2.1 Menu names
The Wi-Fi radio features three types of menu. These are:
• The Main menu
This is the menu which a ows users to enter into different modes, setup the radio, and check the
information in the radio (for examp e software version, product ID).
• The Internet Radio Station List menu
This is the sub-menu in the “Internet Radio” option in the main menu that a ows users to access the
different internet radio services. This menu comes direct from the Internet Radio porta .
• The Mode menus for the various modes
The mode menus are so ca ed because they show the functions avai ab e within the context of each of
the modes. Pressing the <menu> button anytime wi take you the mode menu of the re evant mode the
radio is current y in. Each context menu provides an entry ca ed main menu which takes you back to the
MAIN menu.
2.2 Key functions
Figure 2 shows a typica configuration of keys avai ab e on the WF-900i.

The keys shown in Figure 2 have the fo owing functions:

(2) Rotary Tuning
Contro s
Turn to scro through a menu or station ist. The chosen option is high ighted in reverse text
(dark characters on a white background). Press to se ect.

Button
Previous: Se ect start of track, previous track or ho d to scan down/rewind
(4) Next Button Next: Se ect next track or ho d to scan up/fast forward
(5) A arm Button Enters a arm wizard, turns off a arm (when a arm is sounding) and togg es between a arms
in standby.
(6) Back Button Back: Return to previous screen. In p ay mode, this button may be used to return to the ast
track ist or station ist.
(7) Preset Button Preset: Press for the Preset reca /Save menu;
Scro up/down to se ect the preset number then press 'Se ect' to confirm.
There are 10 presets each for Internet radio, DAB and FM modes.

2.3 Menus
Figure 3 shows the site-map of a the menu and sub-menu in the WF-900i.

2.4
Screens
The screen shows various menus, dia ogues and disp ays, as described be ow.
There are basica y six types of screen:
Standby (c ock)
Sp ash (mode)
Now p aying
Dia ogue
Error/Information
Menu
When text is too ong to fit on the screen, it is first shown truncated, then, after a few seconds, s ow y scro s so
that you can read it a .
The Standby screen shows the time, date and any active a arm
times.
As you cyc e through the p ay modes using Mode, WF900i shows a
sp ash screen for each mode. After one second, WF900i enters the
se ected mode and tries to start p aying the ast station or track that
was p aying in that mode. If this is not possib e, WF900i tries to
connect to the se ected source by scanning for stations, networks, or
prompting for user input as appropriate.
Now p aying screens show information about the audio source and
track now p aying, where avai ab e.
Dia ogue screens are shown to a ow the user to change settings.
They vary in comp exity from simp e Yes/No options up to the
scro ab e network password input screen.
As with menus, the se ected item is shown with a white background.
Dia ogue screens mark the current setting with an asterisk (*).
Error/Information screens give specific messages for a few seconds,
then change automatica y to another screen.
WF900i has basica y three types of menu. Use the Se ect contro to step through and se ect options. A scro bar
on the right of the screen shows if there are further options above or be ow those visib e.
Each mode has a Mode menu, with options specific to that mode. For
examp e, the FM mode menu has just two options: Scan setting and Audio
setting.
In addition, each mode menu has two fina options: System settings >
and Main menu >. The „>‟ indicates options eading to further menus.
The System settings menu a ows access to system settings and
information such as network, time, anguage and software update.
Menus with more options than wi fit on one screen have a scro bar to
the right.
The Main menu a ows access to a modes p us s eep and timer functions.

3 Getting started/ setup
A though the WF900i is sophisticated, getting started is simp e. To p ay DAB or FM radio, a you need
is a power source (a 100-240 V mains supp y).
For Music P ayer mode, you need either a USB stick with music fi es or a wired/ wire ess Ethernet
network and a UPnP music server (e.g. a PC).
For Internet-connected modes such as Internet radio, you a so need a broadband Internet connection.
1. P ace WF900i on a suitab e she f or tab e
2. Connect the power adaptor between WF900i and the mains supp y.
3. To receive broadcast radio (DAB and FM), extend the te escopic antenna.
4. Press Standby.
3.1 Setting up wizard
When WF900i is started for the first time, it runs through a setup
wizard to configure settings for date/time and network. Once this has
finished, the system is ready to use in most modes.
Note To change these settings later, select Menu > System settings
>. To run the setup wizard again, select Menu > System settings >
Setup wizard.
Se ect Yes to start the setup wizard.
Note If you want to use a wired network, bypass the setup wizard.
If you choose No, the next screen asks if you wou d ike to run the
wizard next time WF900i is started. The system then starts without
configuring time/date and network settings and enters the Main Menu.
Note If power is removed while the wizard is in progress, the wizard
will run again next time WF900i is started.

3.2
12/24 hour display
To change between 12 and 24 hour disp ay, se ect Set 12/24 hour and then se ect your preference.
3.3 Setting the time and date
The time and date can be updated manua y or automatica y. With auto-update, the time and date are
automatica y synchronised with externa c ocks. Auto-update is genera y more accurate.
Auto-update
Auto-update works with data sent over DAB, FM or the Internet. The c ock is on y
updated when in a corresponding mode, so it is best to se ect a mode you use
regu ar y.
DAB and FM use time signa s broadcast with radio transmissions.
Network uses a time signa sent from the Frontier Si icon Internet radio porta
when in any network-connected mode.
1. Se ect Update from DAB, Update from FM, Update from Network or No update.
2. Set your time zone.
3. If your country uses day ight saving, the automatica y updated time may be wrong by one hour. When day ight
savings are in effect (during the summer), turn on the Day ight savings option.
WF900i wi auto-update from the se ected source when time information is avai ab e.
Manua set
If you set No update, the wizard now prompts you to set the time and date manua y.
The date and time are disp ayed as dd-mm-yyyy and hh:mm AM/PM with the
first va ue, dd, active (f ashing).
Adjust each va ue with the Se ect contro . As each va ue is set, the next va ue
becomes active and f ashes.
3.4 Networ
WF900i is compatib e with a common network protoco s and encryption methods, inc uding Wi-Fi Protected
Setup (WPS).
To connect WF900i to your network, you need either
a Wi-Fi wire ess router, together with password key if set.
Se ect
WLAN region/ country,
Wi-Fi network (SSID).
If the network is open (non-encrypted), WF900i connects without any further ado; see Completion be ow.
Standard encrypted network
To enter the network’s key (password), use the Se ect contro to
move the cursor through the characters and se ect. As each
character is se ected, the key is bui t up near the top of the
disp ay. There are three options accessib e by turning Se ect
back before the first characters (0123…) – Backspace, OK and
Cance .

WPS encrypted network
WPS encrypted networks are identified by “[WPS]” at the start of the
network name, and have three methods of connection. Se ect one and
fo ow the prompts:

WF900i prompts you to press the
connect button on the router. It then
scans for a ready Push Button Connect
network and connects.
Pin > (code number)
WF900i generates an 8-digit code
number which you enter into the wire ess
router, access point, or an externa
registrar (e.g. advanced versions of
Windows Vista).
Skip WPS >
Enter key as for a standard encrypted network, above.
For more information on setting up a WPS encrypted network, see your WPS router‟s instructions.
Comp etion
WF900i tries to connect to the se ected network.
If connecting fai s, WF900i returns to a previous screen to try
again.
If the network connection is ost, WF900i automatica y tries to reconnect.

3.5 Other Setting
Common settings are covered be ow.
Equa iser
Severa preset EQ modes are avai ab e; a so a user-defined setting.
To adjust the EQ, se ect Menu > System settings > Equa iser.
You can then choose from a variety of preset modes or create your own,
with custom bass, treb e and oudness settings.
Network
WF900i remembers the ast four wire ess networks it has connected to, and automatica y tries to connect to
whichever one of them it can find.
You can see the ist of registered networks through Menu > System settings > Network > Network profi e >.
From here you can de ete unwanted networks by turning and pressing Se ect then confirming de ete Yes.
There are a so other options for viewing and manua y a tering network settings from Menu > System settings >
Network > (for examp e setting up a wired network). Users experienced with networking may find these options
usefu for diagnosing and fixing network prob ems.
Language
The defau t anguage is Eng ish. To change, se ect Menu > System settings > Language > then se ect your
anguage.
3.6 Internet radio portal registration
The Frontier Si icon Internet radio porta website a ows you to organise your favourites ists and a so isten to
Internet radio on a computer.

To register your WF900i with the porta , first get your
radio’s unique porta access code by se ecting Menu >
Station ist > He p > Get access code >.
Write down the access code.
Note Do not confuse the portal access code with the Radio ID (from Menu > System settings > Info.)
Visit the porta website at www.wifiradio-frontier.com .
If this is your first visit to the porta , register for a new account, entering the fo owing information:
access code,
your e-mai address,
password,
radio mode (WF900i).
If you a ready have an account and wish to add an additiona radio, og in to your account and se ect My
preferences > Add another Wi-Fi radio.
Once your radio is registered with the porta , you can immediate y use the Internet radio favourites and
added stations features.
REMARKS:
It is optiona for user to register the Frontier Si icon Internet Radio porta . User
shou d undertake the responsibi ity of any prob em occurred by such operations.
3.7 Setting up a music server
In order for WF900i to p ay music fi es from a computer, the computer must be set up to share fi es or media.
UPnP media sharing a ows devices ike WF900i to p ay music from a shared media ibrary, navigating through
tag menus such as Artist, A bum or Genre. If you are running a suitab e server system such as a PC with
Windows Media P ayer 10 or ater (WMP), and your music ibrary is we -tagged, then it is recommended to use
media sharing. On y the UPnP server needs to be set up.
Note: iTunes does not current y work as a UPnP media server, but there are add-ons avai ab e to work with an
iTunes ibrary.
3.8
Sharing media with Windows Media Player
The most common UPnP server is Windows Media P ayer (10 or ater). A ternative y, other UPnP p atforms and
servers may be used. To set up WMP for media sharing, perform the fo owing steps:
1. Ensure that the PC is connected to the network.
2. Ensure that the radio is powered on and connected to the same network.
3. In WMP, add to the media ibrary the audio fi es and fo ders you want to share with WF900i (Library > Add
to Library…).
4. In WMP, enab e media sharing (Library > Media sharing…).

Make sure that the radio has access to the shared media by se ecting it and c icking A ow. You can a so set a
name for the shared media in Settings… C ick OK to c ose the dia ogue boxes.
The PC is now ready to stream the music to the radio. The WMP UPnP service runs in the background; there is
no need to start WMP exp icit y.

4 Internet Radio Mode
WF900i can p ay thousands of radio stations and podcasts from around
the wor d though a broadband Internet connection.
When you se ect Internet radio mode, WF900i contacts the Frontier
Si icon Internet radio porta to get a ist of stations, organised into different
categories ike Country, Most popu ar and Genre. Once you se ect a
station, WF900i connects direct y to that station.
The porta a so enab es mu tip e ists of favourite stations that you can persona ise, for examp e Andy’s stations,
Jo’s favourites, Talkshows. To use the favourites feature, register your radio with the porta website as described
on page 14. If you have severa Frontier Si icon radios, you can register them a on the same account so that
each radio has access to your favourites ists. It is possib e to add favourites either direct y through WF900i or
through any computer with a web browser.
To enter Internet Radio mode, either press Mode unti the disp ay shows Internet Radio or se ect Menu > Main
menu > Internet Radio.
Note The station list menu is provided from the Internet radio portal, so it is only accessible when WF900i is
connected to the Internet. Station lists and submenus may change from time to time.
There are severa ways of se ecting stations.
Direct y from the radio:
Last istened,
Presets.
From the porta through the Menu > Station ist > menu:
Favourites ists,
Browse by Country, Genre, Most popu ar, Newest,
Search by keyword,
My added stations.
If you are a ready istening to an Internet radio station, you can press Back rather than Menu to quick y return to
the ast visited branch of the menu tree. For examp e, suppose you were istening to New Orleans Radio through
the browse faci ity as described in section 4.4 be ow. Pressing Back wou d return you to the Highlighted Blues
stations menu. Pressing Back again wou d return you to the Blues menu, and so on.
4.1 Last Listened
When Internet radio mode restarts, the ast- istened station is se ected. To se ect another recent y used station,
se ect Menu > Last istened then one of the stations isted. Most recent stations appear at the top of the ist.
4.2 Preset
Presets are stored in the radio and cannot be accessed from other radios.
To store an Internet radio preset, press and ho d Preset unti the disp ay shows the Save preset screen. Se ect
one of the 10 presets by turning the Tuning Knob and press the knob in order to save the current y p aying
station to the preset ist.
To se ect a preset, press Preset brief y, then se ect one of the isted preset stations. When a preset station is
p aying, it shows Pn (P1, P2 etc) in the bottom of the screen.
Note Operation of presets is identical for Internet radio, DAB and FM.
4.3 Favourites
Favourites are stored with the Internet radio porta , and are avai ab e through a Internet radios registered on the
same account. Before favourites can be used, the radio has to be registered with the Internet radio porta (see
page 14).
To store a p aying station as a favourite, press and ho d Se ect unti the disp ay shows ‘Favourite added’. The
station appears in the defau t favourites ist Stations.
To se ect a favourite, se ect Menu > Station ist > My favourites > [Favourites list] > [Station].

4.4 Browse
To browse Internet broadcasts, se ect Menu > Station ist > then either
Stations > or Podcasts >.
Browse through the menus to find broadcasts.
Note ABC Brisbane radio ‘Listen Again’ programmes are accessible through the Podcast menu, for example
Menu > Podcasts > Location > Oceania > Australia > All shows > ABC Brisbane.
4.5 Search
You can a so search through Internet broadcasts for stations or
podcasts with particu ar keywords in their tit e.
To search, se ect Menu > Station ist > then either Stations > or
Podcasts >
Enter a keyword by se ecting characters then OK. The search
entry screens are simi ar in operation to the Wi-Fi password entry
screen.
Se ect a broadcast from the ist.
