These operating instructions are part of the facility and must be available to
operating and maintenance personnel at all times. The safety instructions included
herein must be observed. If the facility is resold, the operating instructions must
also be supplied to the new owner.

of the country of use. If any discrepancies arise in the translated text, the original operating instructions

The AWH inline sight glasses are intended for installation in pipelines. They are for monitoring the ow of
uid in commercial and industrial operations (food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries and lowgerm
processes) and have been designed and built speci cally for that purpose. Suitable ow media include
water, steam, food and liquids from the chemical and pharmaceutical industry subject to a hygienic
standard.
2.2 Intended Use
WARNING
These inline sight glasses were designed exclusively for the purposes described
above. Any other use beyond that described here or alteration of the inline sight
glass without written approval from the manufacturer is considered contrary to
the intended use. The manufacturer accepts no liability for damages arising from
this. The operator alone bears the risk. The inline sight glass may only be commis-
sioned once it is certain that all the safety systems are fully functioning and the
system in which the inline sight glass is installed corresponds to the EC directives.
Intended use also includes compliance with these operating instructions, including the maintenance
and repair conditions.
The work described in these operating instructions is described in a way intended to be understood and
carried out by experts only.
Expert
A person with appropriate training, suitable instruction and experience who is in a position to identify
risks and avoid hazards.

3. Technical Data
3.1 Materials Contact with the Product

Sealing material:

CAUTION
The inline sight glass's area of application shall always be adjusted to the relevant
operating conditions and the materials that come into contact with the product.

HAZARD
AWH inline sight glasses must only be operated with the safety screen in place.
Otherwise there is an injury “HAZARD” from broken glass if the cylinder is faulty.

4. Safety / Hazards
4.1 Notes / Explanations
HAZARD
“HAZARD” warns of hazardous situations. Avoid these hazardous situations.
Failure to do so could result in death or serious injury.

“CAUTION” combined with a warning symbol indicates hazardous situations.

Note
“NOTE” indicates recommended actions. Failure to comply with these will not
result in personal injury. However, follow the recommended actions to avoid
damage to property and trouble.

4.2 Labelling the Inline Sight Glass
The information in these operating instructions only applies to the inline sight glass of the type and
version speci ed on the title page.
If you have any queries, specify the following correctly:
- the nominal width
- the sealing material
- the housing material
This is the only way to ensure ef cient, quick processing.
4.3 Safety Measures (to be carried out by operator)
Note that
- The operator is responsible for training its operating and maintenance personnel and monitoring
compliance with safety measures, including the obligation to wear personal protective equipment.
- The operator shall ensure that unauthorised persons (not operating or maintenance personnel) are
prevented from entering the hazardous area of the machine (in which the inline sight glass is installed).
- The inline sight glass may only be installed or serviced if the pipelines have been previously drained.
- The separation of energy sources shall be designed technically to enable compliance with the shut-
down procedures described in section 5.4.
These operating instructions shall be retained for future use.
They must be available in the vicinity of the system in which the inline sight glass is installed.
The frequency of inspections and monitoring measures shall be observed.
The work described in the sections on transport, installation, assembly, maintenance, malfunction /
cause / remedy shall only be carried out by experts.
Expert
A person with appropriate training, suitable instruction and experience who is in a position to identify
risks and avoid hazards.
4.4 Operator's Duties
Note
In the EEA (European Economic Area), the national implementations of the frame-
work directive (89/391/EEA) and the associated individual directives, especially
the directive (2009/104/EC) on the minimum speci cations for safety and health
protection of employees using work equipment, shall be observed and complied
with in their current valid versions. In Germany, the 2011 Ordinance on Industrial
Safety and Health (BetrSichV) shall be observed.

The operator shall comply with local statutory provisions for:
- safety of personnel (accident prevention regulations),
- safety of work equipment (protective equipment and maintenance),
- disposal of products (waste management laws),
- disposal of materials (waste management laws),
- cleaning (cleaning agents and disposal) and
- environmental protection requirements.
- The installer/operator shall ensure that all ange or pipe unions are leak-proof.
- Tensile and compression stresses shall be ruled out after installation in the pipeline.
In addition, the operator shall ensure
- When using hazardous materials, protective measures shall be speci ed in accordance with the safety
data sheets and operating instructions shall be compiled for hazardous materials. Personnel shall be
instructed in this eld. This also applies to hazardous materials that could be produced in the operating
process.
- A continuous risk assessment shall be carried out for workplaces, including temperature conditions for
the medium and the place of use (falling). The measures shall be recorded in operating instructions
and personnel shall be instructed accordingly.
- Supervisors shall monitor compliance with the measures speci ed in the operating instructions.
- Training of operating personnel shall be ensured.
- Wherever large pneumatic pressures occur, there is a possibility of sudden failure of or damage to the
lines and connectors. This poses a hazard.
- The installer of the overall system shall install and provide certi cation for the control units and safety
equipment needed for setting up, checking, shutting down (including emergency shutdown), operating,
maintaining, cleaning and repairing the system.
- The operator shall provide technical re protection equipment, such as appropriate hand re extin-
guishers, in suf cient quantities and dimensions at easily accessible points and shall instruct employees
in re safety.
- Warnings from the documentation for supplied assemblies shall be observed and integrated in the
workplace-speci c risk assessments.
- The operator is obliged to operate the inline sight glass in perfect condition at all times.
Connections
Before operating the plant/machine with the inline sight glass, the operator shall ensure that the local
speci cations were followed during assembly and commissioning, if these were carried out by the operator.
Note
Illumination level
The operator shall ensure suf cient and consistent illumination in all areas of
the plant. We recommend an illumination level of 300 lux (maintenance value;
ASR 7/3 applies in Germany).
Note
In accordance with the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV), the
operator shall provide its personnel with safety instruction at least once a year.

5. Hazard Warnings
Attention must be paid to the safety systems and safety information described in these operating in-
structions. Operation is performed by the control room of the higher-level system or by the local control
point.
CAUTION
The inline sight glasses and the length and quality of lines must meet the require-
ments. The system shall be assembled by qualied experts. The parameters listed
in the data sheet must be complied with.
HAZARD
There is a risk of burning during operation or maintenance if ow media have
temperatures over 60°C.
HAZARD
AWH inline sight glasses must only be operated with the safety screen in place.

HAZARD
Operate the inline sight glass only at the permissible pressures and tempera-
tures. There is a HAZARD if limits are exceeded or if temperatures change rapidly.
Destruction of the glass cylinder could cause splinters and shards of glass to y
around and hot medium to escape. This could result in serious cut injuries and
burns.
5.2 Hazardous Area of the Inline Sight Glass
The area of the inline sight glass shall be kept accessible to the operator.
CAUTION
The hazardous area during setup, maintenance and repair work extends to 1 m
around the inline sight glass. Take into consideration the swing range of any
switch cabinet doors that can open. The operator shall ensure that persons are
prevented from entering the hazardous area during motion sequences.

5.3 Installing Replacement Parts and Wearing Parts
We expressly draw attention to the fact that replacement and accessory parts not supplied by AWH
have not been checked or approved by AWH. Installing and/or using this type of product can therefore
negatively alter the structural properties of your plant, under certain circumstances. Armaturenwerk
Hötensleben GmbH bears no liability for damages caused by using non-original parts and non-original
accessory parts.
5.4 Shutdown Procedures
WARNING
Before cleaning, maintenance or repair work is carried out (by experts only), the
following shutdown procedure must always be completed.
1. Switch off power to higher-level plant/machine/device.
2. Seal off the pneumatics
- Close shut-off valve.
- Check that the system is non-pressurised.
- Secure the shut-off valve against opening.
3. Shut off the ow of media, relieve the pressure in the pipelines and then drain
them (take particular care with hazardous materials). Check that an inow of
media is prevented and insert dummy discs if necessary. Note that if the media
temperatures exceed 60°C, a cooling off phase must be observed.
Failure to do so could endanger the life and health of personnel.

6. Installation
6.1 Scope of Delivery
Note
The detailed scope of delivery can be seen in the order con rmation.
6.2 Transport and Packaging
Products from Armaturenwerk Hötensleben GmbH is carefully checked and packed before shipping,
however the product may become damaged during transport.
6.2.1 Delivery (including for spare and replacement parts)
Unpacking
- Remove the protective caps from the pipe connections (if present).
- Remove the packaging residue.
Incoming goods check
- Check that the product was delivered in full against the delivery note!
In the event of damage
- Check the delivery for damage (visual inspection)!
In the event of complaints
If the delivery was damaged during transport:
- Contact the last shipment agent immediately!
- Retain the packaging (for possible checking by the shipment agent or for a return delivery).
Packaging for return delivery
If possible, use the original packaging and the original packaging material.
If neither is available any more, request a packaging company with experts.
If there are any questions about the packaging and transport safety equipment, please contact
Armaturenwerk Hötensleben GmbH.
6.2.2 Temporary Storage

6.3 Installation
Note
The inline sight glass is installed in accordance with the structural layout of the
pipeline system and the technical data for the connection variants.
See the dimensional drawings for the installation dimensions. Ensure suf cient
space is available for operation and maintenance.
Make sure that the ange connections and pipe unions are leak-proof. Tensile
and compression stresses shall be ruled out after installation.
6.3.1 Installing the Inline Sight Glass with Male/Male, Liner/Liner, Male/Liner
When installing the inline sight glass, ensure that the connectors and slotted nut conform to the same
standard (e.g. DIN 11851 or DIN 11864).
Before assembly, check the seal ring on the threaded connector for damage and to ensure that it is
installed in the correct position. Replace if necessary.
The thread must not be damaged when installing!
The inline sight glass is fastened using the slotted nut and a slotted nut spanner.
6.3.2 Installing the Inline Sight Glass with Weldon Ends
Welding guidelines
Welding shall be carried out in pipes conforming to DIN 11850 series 2, DIN 11866 series A and C,
SMS standard (France)
Welding method: TIG or orbital welding
Seam type: butt weld joins as per DIN EN 29692
Installed condition
The inline sight glass must be uninstalled before welding (see section on assembly / disassembly).
Weld seam preparation
- Cut the ends of the pipes level and right-angled.
- Remove burrs from the interfaces.
- Align the housing weldon ends with the pipeline so they are level radially and axially.
The weldon ends must t ush and be welded without a gap.
HAZARD
“HAZARD” Make sure that the sight glass can be installed and removed undam-
aged, without breakage, cracks or dents, and without tension or stress. A dam-
aged sight glass may break causing serious injuries and damage to property.
Tensile and compression stresses shall be ruled out after installation.

Note
When welding in place, make sure that the screw holes in the anges line up
(Pic. 7-1, item 7).
Filler materials
Welding
- Connect forming gas before welding.
- Af x 3 to 4 tack welds before welding.
Weld after-treatment
- No treatment is necessary on the interior after welding.
Accessible points can be improved by grinding.
- The exterior can be treated afterwards by staining, brushing, grinding and polishing.
Cleaning
- Clean all welded parts before assembly.
