Connections for Testing with the “EVAL” Reader
Use only the components from this LR-2000KIT UHF Reader Test Kit including the “EVAL” Reader.
1. Clip together the LR-Sounder’s black lead the power module’s black clip and the reader’s black and yellow wires.
2. Clip the LR-Sounder’s orange lead to the “EVAL” reader’s orange wire.
3. Clip together the LR-Sounder’s red lead the power module’s red clip and the “EVAL” reader’s red wire.
4. Plug the power module into a 120 volts AC receptacle.
Connections to Test a Standard LR-2000/3000-Family Reader or a Axcess Near-Field UHF Reader
Use an LR-2000/3000-family reader that is installed and interfaced to the host system or being tested before installation.
1. Clip together the LR-Sounder’s black lead the power module’s black clip and the reader’s black and yellow wires.
2. Clip the LR-Sounder’s orange lead to the LR-2000/3000-family reader’s orange wire.
3. Clip together the LR-Sounder’s red lead the power module’s red clip and the LR-2000/3000 reader’s red wire.
4. Plug the power module into a 120 volts AC receptacle.
Connections to Interface a Reader with RS-232 Data O tp t into a PC
Use an AWID UHF reader either long-range (LR) or near-field (uAxcess).
1. Clip the three spring clips of the gray RS-232 Cable Adapter to the same colors of the reader’s RS-232 data lines.
For Axcess readers connect the adapter’s orange wire to the reader’s violet wire.
2. Plug the 9-pin “D” connector on the adapter into the serial port of the PC or controller
If the PC has only USB ports use the black USB Cable Adapter to extend the RS-232 adapter.
3. In the PC run the AWIDACReaderSettings downloaded program. Print out the Instructions which are zipped with it.
4. Observe the reader’s RS-232 data output as a row of 18 hexadecimal characters for each read of a tag or card.
Meas ring Performance
Test for these standard performance parameters.
(Note: Avoid holding the reader by hand. You will measure best read range when the reader and tags are away from your hands and body.)
• Hang the reader in a large open space 8 feet from the floor and side walls clear in front for 30 feet or more.
• Starting close to the “EVAL” reader move the test tag back along an imaginary line from the front of the reader.
Search for the farthest point at which a read is indicated by the LR-Sounder – often 25 feet or more for
the tags and cards. This determines the maximum range of the reader.
• Holding the tag at half of the maximum range move the tag up and down and side to side to determine the
height and width of the effective RF field. This may be a circle with cross-section diameter up to 16 feet.
• Hold the test tag at 15 to 20 feet in front of the reader. Move the tag around to measure the cross-section of the
effective RF field. This is the “sweet spot” at which most vehicle tags will be read after the reader is installed.
• Attach the vehicle tag temporarily inside the vehicle at the proposed location. Support the “EVAL” reader outside
the vehicle facing the tag parallel to the tag. Move the reader away from the tag to find the maximum reading
distance. (When holding the reader for portable testing keep your fingers away from the edges of the reader.)
S ggestions
LR-Sounder: The tester is not necessary with the LR-3000 reader. This reader has built-in LEDs that show DC power and tag reads.
Tags: Use only one UHF tag or card in the reader’s Effective RF Field. Move other tags and cards 30 feet behind the reader.
