ESC Module Assembly
Step 1: Preparing the ESCs
Parts Needed: 4 x EMAX 12A SimonK ESC
Recommended Tools: Soldering Iron, solder, de-solder pump & helping hands clamp.
1. Cut away the heat shrink with a knife. Be careful not to cut or damage any wires or
components when doing this.
2. With a soldering iron carefully remove the 2 supply cables and capacitor.
NOTE: Make a note of which pin of the capacitor is neg(-) before removal.
3. Remove as much solder as possible from the 2 solder pads. This will make it easier to attach
them to the Power Distribution PCB.

Step 2: Assembling the ESC Cluster
Parts Needed: Bulkhead E PCB, 4 x EMAX 12A SimonK ESC (from previous step), Silicone Wire, power
connector.
Recommended Tools: Soldering Iron, solder, de-solder pump & helping hands clamp.
1. Solder the copper via pins that connect both sides of the PCB. Make sure you apply plenty of
heat so the soldering is secure. The copper on the PCB is very thick so will need at least a 25watt
soldering iron.
2. Turn the PCB over and solder the via pins
3. Solder the main power cables (not supplied). These are the cables that you will connect your
battery to.

4. Solder the Auxiliary power cable (not supplied). This is used to power the FPV Cameras, FPV TX
etc. Note that this outlet is supplied directly from the flight battery. You need to check that the
voltages are suitable for your auxiliary components, if they are not you may need to use a
voltage stepdown regulator.
5. Insert the first ESC into its slot in the PCB board, it is orientated as pictured below. You may need
to enlarge the slots slightly with a thin file.

Page 9

Hornet 250 Assembly Manual V1.0
6. Solder the ESC to the PCB board. Make sure you get a good fillet of solder that is cleanly adhered
to the copper pads on the ESC and the Hornet PCB.
7. Repeat steps 6 & 7 with the other 3 ESCs.
8. Using some pliers carefully bend the pins of one of the capacitors like below. Note that the
capacitors will be marked to indicate the pos(+) and neg(-) connections. On the capacitors shown
here the neg(–) connector is marked by the gold stripe and green (–) symbols. You need to bend
the pins of the capacitors so that they match up with the solder pads on the PCB which are
marked, e.g. C1(-) being the pad for the neg(-) connection.

9. Solder the capacitor to the PCB.
10. Repeat steps 8 & 9 so each ESC has its own capacitor.
NOTE: Make sure that the capacitors are connected the correct way round, failure to do so will
cause damage when you connect power.
11. Cut the supplied heat shrink into 4 equal lengths and use it to cover the 4 ESC as shown below.

12. Shorten the length of the motor wires for ESC 3 and ESC 4 so they are approximately half the
length of the top two.
NOTE: You may want to leave this step until nearer the end of the build to get the exact
lengths.
13. Solder bullet connectors onto all the ESC motor wires. Add heat shrink as appropriate.
NOTE: Make sure that the connectors and wires cannot short out on each other or the carbon
fibre body.
14. Heatshrink the three motor wires of each ESC together into bundles and label as appropriate.

Frame Assembly
Step 1: Carbon Main Tube
1. Take the Carbon Fibre Main tube and using a small hacksaw blade carefully cut through the four
attachment points to remove the lid.
2. With a file remove the remaining small bumps.
3. Place the large 20mm grommets into the two holes on the body tube.
NOTE: You can have your battery connectors on the inside of the Main Tube or on the outside.
The grommets are to protect the cables against being damaged by the carbon fibre. If you are
going to have the connectors inside the Main Tube then you can leave off these grommets.

Step 2: Front Subframe Assembly
1. Parts Needed: Bulkhead C (flight controller mounting plate), 2x antennae tubes, 2x cable ties.
2. Take Bulkhead C and place an antennae tube between the two small cut-outs, ensure you have
the bulkhead plate orientated correctly as shown in the pictures. Pass a cable tie through and
tighten, ensure the end of the cable tie is on the same side as the antennae tube.
(NOTE: Depending on which ports you are using on the flight controller you may need to flip
the plate over and mount the controller on the other side. The standard orientation below is
suitable for most setups using the 8 Pin receiver port and the flexi port, if the main port is
required use the alternative orientation and mount the aerial tubes on the opposite side.)
3. Get the flight controller and its mounting hardware.

4. Fasten the standoffs to the flight controller.
5. Fasten the flight controller onto Bulkhead C. Ensure the USB port is facing upwards. If you are
using the 8 pin receiver port attach this now as it is difficult to access once inside the frame.
(NOTE: Depending on the size of your flight controller mounting hardware, the 4 holes in
Bulkhead C for mounting the flight controller may need enlarging with a drill.)
6. In order to attach the 8 pin connector you will need to cut off the small bit of protruding plastic
along the top edge of the connector in order for it to clear the aluminium spacer.

7. Parts Needed:2x 6mm dia spacers, 2x 5mm dia spacers and 4x M2.5 X 6mm screws.
8.
9. Fasten the two 6mm spacers onto Bulkhead C with 2x M2.5 X 6mm screws. Do not fully tighten
the screws in case you need to rotate the spacers later in the assembly. The two screw holes
along the length of the spacers are slightly countersunk on one side, ensure this side is facing
outward.
