How to service
Strategy
The product is to be serviced in the customer’s home.
The repair involves replacement of the module(s). The replaced modules must be
returned for repair at the Bang & Olufsen Module Repair department. Error codes
as well as an adequate fault description must be returned with each replaced part.
For this purpose, use the Module Repair form or the form in the Retail System
under Exchange Module.
To help the Bang & Olufsen Module Repair department it is very important to
answer the following questions:
1. Which products are in the setup?
2. Which software versions are used in these products?
3. How are the products linked together?
4. What happens in the actual situation?
Fault explanation and demonstration
Before troubleshooting is initiated, let the customer demonstrate the fault, if
possible.
Preparations before service
Always remember to download the latest version of the Service Manual from
BeoWise. Also remember, before servicing the product, to update the latest
version of the software in the Master Link Gateway to ensure optimum conditions.
Servicing
The Master Link Gateway must be serviced by qualified technical personnel only.
If it is not possible to determine the location of the fault or if replacing spare parts
does not clear the fault, please contact your national Service Centre for technical
support.
Handling
Like any other electronic equipment, this product must be handled with care.
Particularly the PCB’s inside Master Link Gateway which contains electrostatic
sensitive devices (ESD), and must therefore be handled carefully to prevent
damaging.
Replacement of modules
If it is necessary to replace modules in Master Link Gateway, the PCB52 Digi
Module require an adjustment after replacement as the serial number has to be
transferred into the new module. Furthermore, it is necessary to transfer the
customer data (backup data from the customer setup made ealier) into the new
module and to update the software to the latest version.

Warnings
Static electricity, ESD
Static electricity may damage the product. In Master Link Gateway there are
integrated circuits which operate at 3.3 volt, and that makes the product
extremely sensitive to static electrity.
Static-protective field service kit.
A static-protective field service kit must always be used when the product is
disassembled or modules are handled.
Follow the instructions in the guide and use the ESD-mat for both old and new
modules.
! Warning
When mains voltage on the product is required, remove the connection between
the product and the ESD-mat.
The chassis or modules must always be connected to the static-protective field
service kit or placed in an ESD-proof bag.
Cleaning
Never use alcohol or other solvents to clean any part of the product!
Wipe dust off the surfaces using a dry, soft cloth or a micro fibre cloth. Remove
grease stains or persistent dirt with a soft, lint-free, firmly wrung cloth, dipped in a
solution of water containing only a few drops of mild detergent, such as washing-up
liquid.
Transport and handling
When transport is required, it is recomended to place the product in the original
packing.

1.4 How to service
Service Tool
General
There is no need for a special ServiceTool as known from other Bang & Olufsen
products, when maintaining or servicing the ML Gateway. All types of service or
adjustments are executed from a web-based user interface.
Accessibility
To access the web-based user interface enter the IP address for ML Gateway. The
default IP address is 192.168.1.10.
Additional information
The user interface is implemented in plain XHTML and styled through Cascading
Style Sheets (CSS).
Therefore in case of special accessibility requirements, an alternative style sheet
can be selected on the web browser without loss of functionality.
Master Link Gateway works well on text-based browsers, or non-visual browsers.

2.2 Service functions
Service functions
General
This section describes the front panel indicator and the service functions of the
setup button on ML Gateway.
Front panel indicator
The front panel indicator provides feedback on the state of the system, and is also
used for setup button operation and Beolink product assignment.
The normal start-up sequence displays like this:
- GREEN: System power up, approximately 2 seconds.
- RED: System boot, approximately 1 minute.
- Blinking RED: MLGW application running, and Beolink products detection in
progress, about 1 minute.
- GREEN: MLGW application is now running.
If MLGW encounters an unrecoverable internal error, it will signal a critical error
condition. In this case, the front panel indicator will keep flashing alternating RED
and GREEN. The application will still be running, but the error and system logs
must be checked for diagnosis.
During software update of any of the two processor modules, the front panel
indicator will flash GREEN.
Setup button
The setup button on the front panel provides several functions. Each function is
dedicated specific number of blinks. These can be accessed by choise through a
cycle of available functions. One blink = function 1, two blinks = function 2... etc.
Survey of functions:
Function 1: Does nothing.
Function 2: Reset password to factory default.
Function 3: Reset network settings to factory default.
Function 4: Erase entire configuration, network and password to factory defaults.
Function 5: Beolink product assignment on the active configuration.
To select a function, press and hold the setup button. This will cycle through all
available functions, and the front panel indicator blinks RED showing the current
function. Release the button at the desired function number in order to execute it.
Holding the button past the last function will return to normal operation.
Also the setup button can be used during system power up for recalling the
original factory-installed software, as described in the section ‘Troubleshooting’.

Troubleshooting 2.3
Troubleshooting
MLGW not working after software update
Detecting if MLGW is running
The following are signs that the MLGW application is not running:
- The front panel indicator does not turn green after approximately 1 minute of
being powered up.
- Briefly pressing the setup button produces no visible feedback on the front panel
indicator.
- The unit automatically reboots every minute or so (check for system boot
indication on the front panel, or critical error indication).
If the application seems to be running, but you cannot connect either via web or
via telnet (command line interface), first check that the network is working as
usual; then try resetting the network settings through the front panel.
For further details regarding network connectivity, please refer to the Network
settings in the section ‘Adjustment’.
Restarting MLGW on factory-installed software
If a software update causes MLGW to fail (for example due to power failure during
flash update), the unit can be restarted using the original factory-installed software.
To do this, switch MLGW off, and while pressing the setup button, switch it back
on. Release the setup button only after 5 seconds. This will start the system using
the original factory software, but will not fix or replace the ‘broken’ software. You
need to log into the system and perform a software upgrade to ‘repair’ the
software.
If you suspect that the failure is inherent to the latest software installed (and not a
failure during the flash process), then you can manually download an earlier
software version from BeoWise to you computer, and perform a software update
from that file.
Erasing entire configuration before application start
If the application fails to start even if restarting on factory-installed software, there
is a method for erasing the entire configuration from MLGW before the
application starts up. This can be useful in case of a corrupt configuration, or a
configuration which causes the older factory-installed software to fail.
The entire configuration is erased if the setup button is pressed when the
application starts (front panel indicator goes from RED to GREEN) and is released
within 1 second. So the normal procedure for this is to power up MLGW with the
setup button pressed, and release it as soon as the front panel indicator goes from
RED to GREEN (approximately 40 seconds after power-up).

4.2 Adjustments
Ajdustments in general
Information
Generally there are few adjustments to be made in ML Gateway, when modules
has been replaced.
To maintain or service ML Gateway there is no need for a special ServiceTool as
known from other Bang & Olufsen products. All types of service or adjustments
are executed from a web-based user interface.
Survey of adjustments
The follwing adjustments/settings are available in the web-based user interface:
- Network Settings.
- Setting up the date and time in the product.
- Setting up the text size (to fit screen resolution of the web interface).
- Change password (login password to ML Gateway).
- Master Link Gateway Protocol settings.
- Serialising the serial number into the product (PCB52, Digi module).
- Backup/restore the customer’s data to a new PCB52, Digi module.
Additional information
! The web interface is organised into a series of screens which can be selected by
means of the navigation bars.
Try to avoid using the browser’s back and forward navigation buttons, as you may
lose the information you are entering.
Also, note that changing to another screen does not save the modifications you
have made. There are ‘Apply’ or ‘Save’ buttons next to most controls and data
fields.
! When a configuration is uploaded to ML Gateway, e.g. when PCB52, Digi module
is replaced, the uploaded project will not be activated automatically (it will only
replace the current EDIT version).
It is required to TEST and then SAVE the newly uploaded configuration in order to
activate it. For this procedure please refer to the ‘Programming’ section in ML
Gateway.
! When it is required to initialise the serial number in to ML Gateway (only relevant
when PCB52, Digi module is replaced) a command line interface (CLI) must be
used. For this purpose it is recommended to use Telnet* which usually is
implemented in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS.
Accessing Command Promt (PC users) or Terminal (Mac users):
Windows XP: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
Windows Vista: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
Mac OS: Go -> Utilities -> Terminal
To activate Telnet type: telnet 192.168.1.10
* In some cases Telnet is not activated per default on Vista installations. To activate
Telnet click: Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Turn
Windows features on or off -> select Telnet Client -> click OK (in some cases
the Windows Vista installation DVD is required to install Telnet).

Adjustments 4.3
Adjustments described
Accessing the user interface
To access the web-based user interface enter the IP address for ML Gateway. The
default IP address is 192.168.1.10.
If the ML Gateway has been assigned an IP address from the router (DHCP) during
an earlier configuration, it might be possible to locate the IP address from the
DHCP client table in the router of the network (not possible in all routers). Use the
MAC address (placed on the label of ML Gateway) to identify the product.
If this is not possible, a reset of the network settings to factory default (function 3)
is required (please refer to service mode page 2.2 for further information).
This will reset the IP address to the default value (192.168.1.10).
When the connection to the ML Gateway is established the following login box
appears on the screen:
Type 'admin' in both fields
and click 'OK'.
(Username is always 'admin',
password can be changed)
Now the web-based user interface appears on
the screen
WWW.BEOWORLD.ORG

4.4 Adjustments
Network Settings In Network Settings it is possible to
define the connection possibilities of
ML Gateway.
The options are:
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol) or Static connection.
When a static connection is chosen,
the IP address, Subnet mask, Gateway
and DNS server addresses must be
defined manually.
Click Apply settings to apply settings
immediately.
MLGW comes with a default fixed IP
address.
The default network settings for ML
Gateway are:
IP address: 192.168.1.10
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS server: 192.168.1.1
Setting up date and time MLGW can get its system time
from the BeoLink, and this is the
recommended option. In this case the
time will be constantly synchronised
to the clock of the main BeoLink
product.
Alternatively, the date and time can
be set manually. Note that MLGW will
lose its time setting if powered down
for several hours.
System time is useful for monitoring
events and for examining the system
and error logs, but correct time
setting is not critical to the system.
Click Apply settings to apply settings
immediately.
