ppe or components are nstalled n a poston
where they are unlkely to be exposed to any
substance whch may corrode refrgerant
contanng components, unless the components
are constructed of materals whch are nherently
resstant to beng corroded or are sutably
protected aganst beng so corroded.
2.1.9 Checks to electrcal devces
Repar and mantenance to electrcal components
shall nclude ntal safety checks and component
nspecton procedures. If a fault exsts that could
compromse safety, then no electrcal supply shall
be connected to the crcut untl t s satsfactorly
dealt wth. If the fault cannot be corrected
mmedately but t s necessary to contnue
operaton, an adequate temporary soluton shall
be used. Ths shall be reported to the owner of
the equpment so all partes are advsed.
Intal safety checks shall nclude: that capactors
are dscharged: ths shall be done n a safe manner
to avod possblty of sparkng; that there no lve
electrcal components and wrng are exposed
whle chargng, recoverng or purgng the system;
that there s contnuty of earth bondng.
2.2 Repars to sealed components
2.2.1 Durng repars to sealed components,
all electrcal supples shall be
dsconnected from the equpment
beng worked upon pror to any removal
of sealed covers, etc. If t s absolutely
necessary to have an electrcal supply
to equpment durng servcng, then
a permanently operatng form of leak
detecton shall be located at the most
crtcal pont to warn of a potentally
hazardous stuaton.
2.2.2 Partcular attenton shall be pad to the
followng to ensure that by workng
on electrcal components, the casng s
not altered n such a way that the level
of protecton s affected. Ths shall
nclude damage to cables, excessve
number of connectons, termnals
not made to orgnal specfcaton,
damage to seals, ncorrect fttng of
glands, etc. Ensure that apparatus s
mounted securely. Ensure that seals
or sealng materals have not degraded
such that they no longer serve the
purpose of preventng the ngress of
flammable atmospheres. Replacement
parts shall be n accordance wth the
manufacturer’s specfcatons.
C
Note: The use of slcon sealant
may nhbt the effectveness
of some types of leak detecton
equpment. Intrnscally safe
components do not have to be
solated pror to workng on
them.
2.3 Repar to ntrınsıcally safe
components
Do not apply any permanent nductve or
capactance loads to the crcut wthout ensurng

that ths wll not exceed the permssble voltage
and current permtted for the equpment n use.
Intrnscally safe components are the only types
that can be worked on whle lve n the presence
of a flammable atmosphere. The test apparatus
shall be at the correct ratng. Replace components
only wth parts specfed by the manufacturer.
Other parts may result n the gnton of
refrgerant n the atmosphere from a leak.
2.4 Cablng
Check that cablng wll not be subject to wear,
corroson, excessve pressure, vbraton, sharp
edges or any other adverse envronmental
effects. The check shall also take nto account
the effects of agng or contnual vbraton from
sources such as compressors or fans.
2.5 Detecton of flammable
refrgerants
Under no crcumstances shall potental sources of
gnton be used n the searchng for or detecton
of refrgerant leaks. A halde torch (or any other
detector usng a naked flame) shall not be used.
2.6 Leak detecton methods
The followng leak detecton methods are
deemed acceptable for systems contanng
flammable refrgerants. Electronc leak detectors
shall be used to detect flammable refrgerants,
but the senstvty may not be adequate, or may
need recalbraton. (Detecton equpment shall
be calbrated n a refrgerant-free area.) Ensure
that the detector s not a potental source of
gnton and s sutable for the refrgerant used.
Leak detecton equpment shall be set at a
percentage of the LFL of the refrgerant and shall
be calbrated to the refrgerant employed and the
approprate percentage of gas (25 % maxmum)
s confrmed. Leak detecton fluds are sutable
for use wth most refrgerants but the use of
detergents contanng chlorne shall be avoded
as the chlorne may react wth the refrgerant
and corrode the copper ppe-work. If a leak s
suspected, all naked flames shall be removed/
extngushed. If a leakage of refrgerant s found
whch requres brazng, all of the refrgerant shall
be recovered from the system, or solated (by
means of shut off valves) n a part of the system
remote from the leak. Oxygen free ntrogen (OFN)
shall then be purged through the system both
before and durng the brazng process.
2.7 Removal and evacuaton
When breakng nto the refrgerant crcut to make
repars – or for any other purpose – con-ventonal
procedures shall be used.However, t s mportant
that best practce s followed snce flammablty
s a consderaton. The followng procedure shall
be adhered to: remove refrgerant; purge the
crcut wth nert gas; evacuate; purge agan wth
nert gas; open the crcut by cuttng or brazng.
The refrgerant charge shall be recovered nto
the correct recovery cylnders. The system shall
be “flushed” wth OFN to render the unt safe.
Ths process may need to be repeated several
tmes.Compressed ar or oxygen shall not be
used for ths task. Flushng shall be acheved by
breakng the vacuum n the system wth OFN and
contnung to fll untl the workng pressure s
acheved, then ventng to atmosphere, and fnally
pullng down to a vacuum. Ths process shall be
repeated untl no refrgerant s wthn the system.
When the fnal OFN charge s used, the system
shall be vented down to atmospherc pressure

In addton to conventonal chargng
procedures,the followng requrements shall be
followed.
– Ensure that contamnaton of dfferent
refrgerants does not occur when usng
chargng equpment. Hoses or lnes shall
be as short as possble to mnmze the
amount of refrgerant contaned n them.
– Cylnders shall be kept uprght.
– Ensure that the refrgeraton system s
earthed pror to chargng the system wth
refrgerant.
– Label the system when chargng s
complete (f not already).
– Extreme care shall be taken not to overfll
the refrgeraton system.
Pror to rechargng the system t shall be
pressure tested wth OFN. The system shall be
leak tested on completon of chargng but pror
to commssonng. A follow up leak test shall be
carred out pror to leavng the ste.
2.9 Decommssonng
Before carryng out ths procedure, t s essental
that the techncan s completely famlar wth the
equpment and all ts detal. It s recommended
good practce that all refrgerants are recovered
safely. Pror to the task beng carred out, an ol
and refrgerant sample shall be taken n case
analyss s requred pror to re-use of reclamed
refrgerant. It s essental that electrcal power s
avalable before the task s commenced.
a) Become famlar wth the equpment and
ts operaton.
b) Isolate system electrcally.
c) Before attemptng the procedure ensure
that: mechancal handlng equpment
s avalable, f requred, for handlng
refrgerant cylnders; all personal
protectve equpment s avalable and
beng used correctly; the recovery process
s supervsed at all tmes by a competent
person; recovery equpment and cylnders
conform to the approprate standards.
d) Pump down refrgerant system f possble.
e) If a vacuum s not possble, make a manfold
so that refrgerant can be removed from
varous parts of the system.
f) Make sure that cylnder s stuated on the
scales before recovery takes place.
g) Start the recovery machne and operate
n accordance wth manufacturer’s
nstructons.
h) Do not overfll cylnders. (No more than 80 %
volume lqud charge).
) Do not exceed the maxmum workng
pressure of the cylnder,even temporarly.
j) When the cylnders have been flled
correctly and the process completed, make
sure that the cylnders and the equpment
are removed from ste promptly and all
solaton valves on the equpment are
closed off.
k) Recovered refrgerant shall not be charged
nto another refrgeraton system unless t
has been cleaned and checked.

Equpment shall be labelled statng that t has
been de-commssoned and empted of refr-
gerant. The label shall be dated and sgned.
Ensure that there are labels on the equpment
statng the equpment contans flammable
refrgerant.
2.11 Recovery
When removng refrgerant from a system,
ether for servcng or decommssonng, t s
recommended good practce that all refrgerants
are removed safely. When transferrng refrgerant
nto cylnders, ensure that only approprate
refrgerant recovery cylnders are employed.
Ensure that the correct number of cylnders for
holdng the total system charge are avalable.
All cylnders to be used are desgnated for the
recovered refrgerant and labelled for that
refrgerant (.e. specal cylnders for the recovery
of refrgerant). Cylnders shall be complete wth
pressure relef valve and assocated shut-off
valves n good workng order. Empty recovery
cylnders are evacuated and, f possble, cooled
before recovery occurs.
The recovery equpment shall be n good workng
order wth a set of nstructons concernng the
equpment that s at hand and shall be sutable
for the recovery of flammable refrgerants. In
addton,a set of calbrated weghng scales shall
be avalable and n good workng order. Hoses
shall be complete wth leak-free dsconnect
couplngs and n good condton. Before usng the
recovery machne, check that t s n satsfactory
workng order, has been properly mantaned
and that any assocated electrcal components
are sealed to prevent gnton n the event of a
refrgerant release. Consult manufacturer f n
doubt.
The recovered refrgerant shall be returned to
the refrgerant suppler n the correct recovery
cylnder, and the relevant Waste Transfer Note
arranged. Do not mx refrgerants n recovery
unts and especally not n cylnders.
If compressors or compressor ols are to be
removed, ensure that they have been evacuated
to an acceptable level to make certan that
flammable refrgerant does not reman wthn the
lubrcant. The evacuaton process shall be carred
out pror to returnng the compressor to the
supplers. Only electrc heatng to the compressor
body shall be employed to accelerate ths process.
When ol s draned from a system, t shall be
carred out safely.
Competence of servce

Informaton about the dfferent safety concepts:
Unventlated – (see Clause GG.2) Safety of the
applance does not depend on ventlaton of the
housng. Swtchng off the applance or openng
of the housng has no sgnfcant effect on the
safety. Nevertheless, t s possble that leakng
refrgerant may accumulate nsde the enclosure
and flammable atmosphere wll be released when
the enclosure s opened.
Ventlated enclosure – (see Clause GG.4) Safety
of the applance depends on ventlaton of the
housng. Swtchng off the applance or openng
of the enclosure has a sgnfcant effect on
the safety. Care should be taken to ensure a
suffcent ventlaton before.
Ventlated room – (see Clause GG.5) Safety of the
applance depends on the ventlaton of the room.
Swtchng off the applance or openng of the
housng has no sgnfcant effect on the safety.
The ventlaton of the room shall not be swtched
off durng repar procedures.
