Touring Your Joybook
Depending on the model of your Joybook, the appearance may be different from those shown in this manual.
MSpeakers
Generates sounds from Joybook.
NPower Button
Turns Joybook on or off.
OKeyboard
Allows you to input data as well as access various special functions.
PTouch Pad
You can use the touch pad to conveniently con-
trol the cursor on the screen.
•To move the cursor, gently move your finger
on the touch pad. The cursor will move
accordingly.
•Tap on the touch pad once to execute the
same action as clicking on the left button of a
mouse.
•Tap twice to execute the same action as dou-
ble-clicking.
QLeft and Right Selection Buttons
Equivalent to the left and right buttons on a mouse.
RTop Cover Switch
Locks the top cover and keeps it closed.
Built-in Microphone
Receives sounds and voices for recording.
External Microphone Connector
Connects to a microphone for recording sounds and voices.
Audio Output Connector
Connects to various audio devices, such as earphones or external speakers for output-
ting sounds and voices from Joybook.

Indicator Lights
Optical Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data on the disc in the DVD-
ROM/DVD-Combo/DVD+RW/DVD-Dual drive.
Hard Disk Drive Activity Indicator
Flashes green when Joybook is accessing data in the hard disk drive.
Num Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Num Lock function is activated (refer to
"Function Hotkeys" on page 7 for details).
Caps Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Caps Lock function is activated (refer to
"Function Hotkeys" on page 7 for details).
Scroll Lock Indicator
Lights up in green when the Scroll Lock function is activated (refer to
"Function Hotkeys" on page 7 for details).
Wireless Network Indicator
Lights up in green when Joybook is ready for wireless network con-
nection. (This function works only if an optional Mini PCI wireless
network card is installed.)
Power Indicator
•Lights up in green when Joybook power is on.
•Flashes green when Joybook has been put to the Standby mode.
Battery Indicator!
•Lights up in green when the battery is fully charged and connected
to AC power.

VGA Port
Allows Joybook to connect to external dis-
play devices, such as monitors and projec-
tors.
Modem Port
Accepts an analog telephone line for use
with the internal modem.
PC Card Ejection Button
Before ejecting a PC card:
1. Quit all PC Card applications and shut down all PC
card functions.
2. Push in, then release the PC card eject button, caus-
ing it to pop out.
3. When the button has popped out, push it in again to
eject the PC card.
Ventilation
Holes
For dissipating heat and keeping Joybook
at an optimal temperature.
Ethernet Port
Allows Joybook to connect to an 10/
100BaseT Ethernet network.
USB Port
For connecting peripherals such as mice,
digital cameras and MP3 players that use
the USB interface.
PC Card Expansion Slot
This slot accepts one Type-II PC card. You
can use it and various PC Cards on the mar-
ket to further expand the capabilities of your
Joybook.
Insert the PC Card into the slot following
the direction indicated on the card and com-
plete related driver settings according to the
documentation of the card.

DVD-ROM/DVD-Combo/DVD+RW/DVD-Dual Drive (Optional)
Supports multi-functional optical module for reading music CDs, VCDs and DVDs or burning CD-R/CD-RW or DVD+R/
DVD+RW discs. The disc tray can be opened by pressing the small ejection button on the drive.
If you wish to open the disc tray when your Joybook power is off, or it
can't be opened using the ejection button, insert a pointed object into
the tray ejection hole next to the ejection button to force open the disc
tray.

Anti-Theft Lock Hole
You can install a cable lock to this hole to prevent theft.
Wireless Network Indicator

Function Hotkeys
The F
F
nkey located at the lower left corner of the keyboard is used with another key to perform the alternative function of a key. The letter "Fn" and the alternative functions
are identified by the color of blue on the keytop. To perform a desired function, first press and hold Fn, then press the other key. For example, to decrease speaker volume,
press and hold the Fn key, and then press the F3 key.
Fn + F1 Switches the wireless network radio on
and off. Upon booting the Joybook,
default setting is off.
Fn + F6 Decreases screen brightness. F

n + F12 Serves as the standby or hibernate button that
you can define with Windows' Power Manage-
ment. (refer to "Setting up Fn+F12 Key Func-
tion" on page 11 for details)
Fn + F3 Decreases speaker volume. F

n + NumLk Activates or deactivates the numeric keypad
integrated in the keyboard (indicated by the
light gray shade in the illustration above).

neous display.
If the display mode is set to 256 col-
ors or lower, or in DOS mode, there

When activated, the screen moves one line up

Getting Started with Windows XP
Your Joybook comes installed with Windows XP, Microsoft's latest operating system for consumer PCs. The first time you start up your Joybook, Windows XP will ask you a
few questions. Answer the questions to ensure that your full rights are protected. If you are asked to select the type of keyboard and you are not sure, please check
the specification label on the packing carton to determine the correct keyboard type.
After you are done answering the questions, Joybook will restart and then you will enter Windows XP for the first time. Click S

Charging the Battery
• Charging will not start if the battery's temperature is below 0 qC (32 qF) or above
45qC (113qF).
• The charging process will stop and the Power Indicator flashes amber when the
battery's temperature gets above 60 qC (140 qF). If this happens, the battery pack
may be damaged. Please contact your dealer.
• During charging, do not disconnect the AC adapter before the battery has been
fully charged; otherwise you will get a prematurely charged battery.
To charge the battery pack, connect the AC adapter to the computer and an elec-
trical outlet. The Battery Indicator on Joybook lights up in amber to indicate
that charging is in progress. You are advised to keep Joybook power off while the
battery is being charged. When the battery is fully charged, the Power Indicator
lights up in green.
It takes approximately 3.2 hours to fully charge the Li-Ion battery pack when Joy-
book is off, and 4.5 hours to fully charge the Li-Ion battery pack when Joybook is
on.
After the Joybook has been fully recharged, do not immediately disconnect and
reconnect the AC adapter to charge it again. Doing so may damage the battery.
The battery level may automatically decrease due to the self-discharge process
(0.21 % per day), even when the battery pack is fully charged (100 %). This happens
no matter if the battery pack is installed in the Joybook.
Initializing the Battery
You need to initialize a new battery pack before using it for the first time or when
the actual operating time of a battery pack is much less than expected.
Initializing is the process of fully charging, discharging, and then charging. It can
take several hours.
1. Make sure that the Joybook power is turned off. Connect the AC adapter to fully
charge the battery pack.
2. After the battery pack is fully charged, turn on the Joybook. When the BenQ
logo appears on the screen, press F2 to invoke the program.
3. Disconnect the AC adapter and leave the Joybook on until the battery is fully
discharged. The Joybook will shut down automatically.
4. Connect the AC adapter to fully charge the battery pack.
Checking the Battery Level
Any battery level indication is an estimated result. The actual operating time can be
different from the estimated time, depending on how you are using the Joybook.
You can check the approximate battery level using the battery meter function of
Windows. To read the battery level in Windows, click the icon on Windows
Taskbar. (Click the icon if the computer is using AC power.)
Battery Low Signals and Actions
The Battery Low signal goes off when the battery has approximately 10% (Win-
dows default setting) of its charge remaining. Joybook gives warning beeps or
messages and the Battery Indicator flashes red to alert you to take actions.
You can set up your threshold and Battery Low signals under Windows.
Immediately save your data upon Battery Low. The remaining operating time
depends on how you are using the Joybook.
Always respond to Battery Low by placing your Joybook on Standby or Hiberna-
tion mode, turning off the computer, or connecting the AC adapter. If you do not
take any action, the computer will automatically hibernate and turn off.
• If you are using a flash PC memory card, do not access the card during battery low
periods. This is because the access may take longer than the time it takes the bat-
tery to run out of charge, thus making your access to the card unsuccessful.
• If you fail to save your data when the battery completely runs out of charge, then
you lose your data.
Replacing the Battery
• There is danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace the bat-
tery only with the computer manufacturer's optional battery packs. Discard used
batteries according to the dealer's instructions.
• Do not attempt to disassemble the battery pack.
If you often rely on battery power for a long period of time while traveling, you
may consider the purchase of an additional battery pack from your dealer and
keep it with you in a fully charged state as a backup.
To replace the battery pack:
1. Make sure that the computer is not turned on or connected to AC power.
2. Carefully place the computer upside down.

3. Slide Battery Retainer A outward to the unlock position.
4. Slide Battery Retainer B to the unlock position and, while still holding the
retainer, pull the battery away from its compartment.
5. Fit another battery pack into place and slide Battery Retainer A to the lock
position.
Power Management
Your Joybook supports ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) for
power management. The power management feature allows you to reduce the
power consumption for energy saving.
With an ACPI-compliant operating system such as Windows XP, power supply to
different computer components is controlled on an as-needed basis. This allows
maximum power conservation and performance at the same time.
•Power to the hard disk is turned off when the hard disk has been idle for a set
period.
•Power to the display is turned off when the display has been idle for a set period.
•When you press Fn+F12, close the cover, press the Power button or when the
entire system has been idle for a set period, the Joybook enters Standby or
Hibernation mode. The hard disk and display are turned off and the entire sys-
tem consumes less power.

Hibernation
Hibernation is a very useful feature. People frequently open many applications
when they use computers. It takes some time to get all these applications open and
running, and normally they all have to be closed before the system can be turned
off.
When you use the Hibernation feature, you do not have to close the applications.
The Joybook stores the state of your operation to a file on the hard disk and then
shut down. The next time you turn on your Joybook, you return to exactly where
you left off.

Using BIOS Setup
BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is a layer of software, called firmware, that
translates instructions from other layers of software into instructions that Joybook
hardware can understand. The BIOS settings are needed by Joybook to identify
the types of installed devices and establish special features.
You can visit http://Support.BenQ.com for latest BIOS updates.
When and How to Use BIOS Setup
You need to use BIOS Setup when:
•You see an error message on the screen requesting you to run BIOS Setup.
•You want to restore the factory default settings.
•You want to modify some specific settings according to the hardware.
•You want to modify some specific settings to optimize system performance.
• The BIOS Setup screen shown in this chapter is for your reference only. The actual
items or settings on your Joybook may differ.
• The BIOS Setup program may have been updated after the publication of this man-
ual.
• The settings you select in your operating system might override similar settings in
BIOS Setup.
To run BIOS Setup, press the F2 key when then the BenQ logo appears on the
screen during system startup. The logo shows up on the screen for only a few sec-
onds, so you must press the F2 key quickly. The BIOS Setup main screen will
appear as follows.
The BIOS Setup screen can be divided into four areas:
•On the top line is the menu bar containing the titles of available menus. Each
menu title contains a specific menu.
•The center left column of the menu contains information regarding the current
settings of the system. If you open a pull-down menu and select an item that
provides multiple options, the left column will display a submenu where you can
make further selections.
•The right column of the menu contains details of the CPU and system memory.
•The bottom lines of the menu provide keyboard instructions for moving around
and making selections. When a menu item is highlighted, more detailed infor-
mation is given.
Navigating the BIOS Setup Screen
Keyboard information can be found at the bottom of the screen. A brief descrip-
tion of keyboard usage is listed below:
Main Menu
The main menu contains the basic configuration settings of the system.
•Date and Time: sets the system date and time.
•Internal NumLock: sets if you can enter a number when Num Lock is turned off.
When this item is enabled, you can press and hold the Fn key, and then press a

letter key to enter a number even if Num Lock is turned off. When this item is
disabled, you cannot enter a number with the above method. A check mark (D)
indicates enabled while underline (_) indicates disabled. Default setting is
enabled.
•USB Emulation: enables or disables the USB Emulation function. Once enabled,
you can use USB keyboard or floppy disk drive in MS-DOS mode.
•POST beep: enables or disables the beep sound when starting the Joybook.
Advanced Menu
The Advanced menu contains the I/O (Input/Output) configuration settings of
the system.
Incorrect settings in this menu may cause your system to malfunction. You are
advised to keep the default
•Geyserville Support: enables or disables the Geyserville feature of the CPU. The
Geyserville feature helps conserve battery life by decreasing the CPU’s running
speed under certain conditions while still maintaining a high performance. If
this item is enabled, the CPU will automatically change its speed whenever nec-
essary based on the “Power Scheme” setting in Windows’ Control Panel. If this
item is disabled, the CPU will always run in the lowest speed.
•Shared Video Memory: sets the shared memory size of the video controller.
This item is for Legacy VGA and SVGA mode only. When under Windows mode, the
shared video memory is allocated directly by the VGA driver based on the size of
your system memory.
Security Menu
The Security menu contains the security settings, which safeguard your system
against unauthorized use.
•Set Password: allows you to set the password for your system. When typing the
password, first make sure that Num Lock is off, then type your password in the
entry fields and press Enter. Confirm your password by typing it again and
pressing Enter. If the E

nable Password to Power-on sub-item is enabled, the set
password is always required to boot the computer.
•Hard Disk Boot Sector: sets if a warning message will appear when the hard disk
boot sector (partition table) has been changed. A checkmark (D) indicates
enabled, while an underline (_) indicates disabled. The default setting is dis-
abled.
Set this item to disabled before installing an operating system, running Fdisk or
Format program. Otherwise, the intended action will fail.
Boot Menu
The Boot menu sets the sequence of the devices to be searched for the operating
system.
Boot Sequence: sets the first, second, third, and fourth booting device. The system
will try to boot from the first device but if it is not available, will try the next boot
device.
To select a boot device manually, press the F9 key when the BenQ logo appears on
the screen during Joybook startup. The boot menu will appear. Use the up and
down arrow keys (K,L) to select a boot device and then press the Enter key to con-
firm.
If you set all booting options to the same device, then the computer will try to boot
from that device only.
Exit Menu
The Exit menu displays ways of exiting BIOS Setup. After finished with your set-
tings, you must save and exit so that the new settings can take effect.
•Save Changes and Exit: saves the changes you have made and exits BIOS Setup.
After finished with your settings, you must save and exit so that the new settings
can take effect.
•Discard Changes and Exit: exits BIOS Setup without saving the changes you have
made.
•Get Default Values: loads factory default values for all the items.
•Load Previous Values: loads previously set values before running BIOS Setup.

Using the OSD (On-Screen Display) Utility
The OSD utility allows you to configure the appearance of the messages that
appear on the screen when you press a function key combination (for example,
Fn+F3). It will be activated and the icon will appear on the system tray every
time Windows starts up.
A graphic display will appear on the screen to indicate the current status of certain
operations.
Changing the OSD Color
You can change the colors of the individual OSD elements. Right-click on the
OSD utility icon on Windows Taskbar and then select C
C
olor. A dialog will
appear.
To change the color of an element such as text, graphic, and background, click on
the corresponding color square and the a window appears where you can specify
the color.
Windows would retain the settings the next time you restart the system.
Operation OSD Description
Fn+F1 Icon and text appear on the screen to indicate that
wireless network radio is on or off.
Fn+F3
Fn+F4
A bar appears on the screen whenever you press
these hotkeys to adjust the volume level.
Fn+F5 Icon and text appear on the screen to indicate the
current display output.
Fn+F6
Fn+F7
A bar appears on the screen to indicate the bright-
ness level.
AC power connected/dis-
connected
Icon and text appear on the screen to indicate that
the AC power cord has been connected or discon-
nected.

applications to enhance the multimedia experience on your Joybook. Click on the
small triangle button and a rotating button bar will appear.

Music. You can use QMusic to listen to MP3 or CD music,
burn MP3 music onto a CD (needs optional CD burner), convert

music album.

ero Express for burning your favorite music, photos and
files onto CDs.

hoto Explorer. It allows you to easily create and share your

Sending and Receiving E-mail
You can use Outlook Express to send and receive e-mail.
Jn order to use e-mail, you must have an account with an ISP (Internet service provider) and perform needed software configuration. For detailed information on accounts, pass-
words, e-mail servers and other settings, please consult your system administrator/ISP, or contact BenQ Customer Service for help.
