P. 8
6- RIGGING
Unpack the rig components and unroll the sail. Check that you have each of the
different components listed in the section “Your Boat”.
Mount the boom onto the sail by threading it through the webbing loop
holding the downhaul pulley, with the fork positioned at the base of the luff
pocket. Attach the clew hook to the sail at the clew eyelet.
Attach the Cunningham to the sail by threading the rope through the tack
pulley. Ensure that there is no more than 1 crossing of the rope.
Insert the mast up the luff pocket of the sail, ensuring that the mast passes
through the boom fork. Ensure that the male mast plug fits snugly into the
top of the mast, and that the vario top is adjusted to the appropriate length
(see below).
Stand the mast (mounted with sail and boom) in the mast cup at the front
of the boat. Attach both the Cunningham and mainsheet ratchet block to the
hull with the automatic snap hooks. Tension the Cunningham by pulling on
the handle. In order to facilitate downhaul tension, apply downward pressure
on the boom at the same time as you tension the Cunningham. If the wind
is over 10 knots, ensure that the clew of the sail is well tensioned also (check
“Additional Tips” for more information on Cunningham tension).
Check List before sailing:
The rudder must be correctly fitted on its mounts.
The retaining clip must be locked against the rudderblade. Make sure that
any safety leashes are fitted as appropriate. Note that the rudderblade can
be raised and lowered during the launching or landing process. The red rope
will raise the rudderblade, the green rope will lower the rudderblade. Make
sure that the rudderblade is raised when you come into shore!
The draining bung at the bottom of the hull must be closed firmly.
The daggerboard retaining loop must be fitted to the hull. As you launch the
boat, gradually insert the daggerboard in its casing as water depth and wind
conditions permit.
Go sailing and have fun!!
ADDITIONAL TIPS:
Steps b. and c. are only necessary the first time you use the O’pen BIC. Once
you have mounted the boom and the Cunningham, they should remain
permanently attached to the sail. When familiar with the rigging process of the
O’pen BIC, it takes no more than 2 minutes!
Vario top length: The vario top should be adjusted so that the boom sits at
shoulder height when the sailor is sitting upright in the boat (for an average
sized user). In general, this will mean that the vario top is set at around 10 cm
long, but further tuning will find the best length for you.
Cunningham tension: The right amount of tension will depend on the user’s
preferred sailing style, weight, skill level and the wind / water conditions.
Try different levels of Cunningham tension to see what works for you!

If the wind is over 10 knots: apply maximum tension to the Cunningham =
allow the sail to open in the gusts = gives you more control.
Visual checkpoint: the leech of the sail starts to become loose.
If the wind is less than 10 knots: apply less tension = gives the sail a tighter
leech = fuller profile = more power.
Mainsheet ratchet block: The red lever turns it “on” or “off”.
In “on” mode = the mainsheet can only be pulled in one direction = the block
will “click” = the mainsheet tension decreases.
In “off” mode = the mainsheet can freely move in both directions.
Daggerboard: It should be positioned according to the prevalent wind
conditions and angle of sail.
For strong winds or downwind sailing, raise the daggerboard slightly to let the
boat plane.
In lighter winds or upwind sailing, lower the daggerboard to give the boat
more traction through the water. Again, the best daggerboard position will
depend on the user and sailing conditions, so try different positions to see
what works for you!

7- DE-RIGGING
Release the tension on the Cunningham.
Undo the automatic snap hooks at the bottom of the mainsheet ratchet block
and the Cunningham.
Lift the rig out of the boat and remove the mast from the sail. Remember to
leave the boom, Cunningham and mainsheet (with pulleys) attached to the sail.
Roll the sail from the head. Place the sail, mast, boom and tackle together in
the rig bag.
Remove the daggerboard and rudder from the hull and place them in their
foam sleeves for protection.
ADDITIONAL TIPS:
When rolling the sail, make sure that it is rolled firmly so that little excess sail
material is left loose in the bag. This will ensure the long term durability of
your sail and help to prevent any creasing off the monofilm.

8- FINE TUNING YOUR BOAT
BATTEN TENSION
• Sail batten tension is fixed at the factory and normally no modification is required.
• However, the sail battens can be tuned according to user preference by
unscrewing or screwing the batten end caps (located underneath the batten
closing levers). The ideal setting depends on user preference and local sailing
conditions, so try different settings to see what works for you.
• In general:
To increase batten tension, unscrew the batten end cap to lengthen the
batten. Increased tension will further block the profile of the sail making it
more stable in stronger winds (particularly important for the bottom battens).
To decrease batten tension, screw the batten end cap to shorten the batten.
Decreased tension will improve the rotation of the battens in light winds.
For normal use across a wide range of conditions, it is recommended
that batten tension decreases progressively from the bottom upwards.
The bottom most batten lever should close with a firm snap. The top most
batten lever should close easily.
In some cases, particularly on the top 2 battens, you may wish to de-
tension the top battens further than that permitted by the batten end cap
(in order to improve light wind batten rotation). In this event, remove the
batten end cap, trim the end of the batten by up to 5mm, replace the batten
end cap and then adjust accordingly.
BOOM SAFETY ATTACHMENT
• The use of the O’pen BIC Boom Safety Attachment (BSA) will substantially
increase the power and performance of the sail (similar to a Boom Vang or
kicking strap: a line or series of lines between the base of the mast and the front
end of the boom that can be tensioned to control sail profile and boom position).
• The BSA should only be used by experienced sailors, who are using the boat
in medium to strong winds and/or in racing and competition.
• There is no need to add a BSA in light winds or with less experienced sailors.
• The O’pen BIC BSA is available as an accessory. If you are interested in this
product, please contact your original point of purchase for more information.

9- OPTIMIST COMPATIBILITY
The O’pen BIC has been designed to be compatible with the Optimist rig, rudder
and daggerboard components. First, you can start sailing with the O’pen BIC hull
only, using the rig that you already have from the Optimist. This will give you a
boat that is more fun and powerful than the Optimist, yet easier to handle and
progress on given that you should be familiar with the performance of the Spiritsail.
Later on, once you are comfortable with this combination, you can upgrade to the
full O’pen BIC 4,5m² rig and then the boat comes into its own, becoming the true
glide machine that it is meant to be!
When using your Optimist components with the O’pen BIC, please note the
following:
Optimist Rig
In order for the mast to fit snugly in the mast cup of the hull, it is necessary
to use an adaptor ring. This adaptor ring is available as an accessory to the
O’pen BIC, please contact your original point of purchase for more information.
Optimist Daggerboard
The Optimist daggerboard will fit directly into the O’pen BIC.
Optimist Rudder
The Optimist rudder head may need modification before it can be used on the
O’pen BIC. The O’pen BIC rudder mount design is based on one of the most
commonly available “school” versions of the Optimist. However, amongst the
many different Optimist manufacturers, the rudder mounting system is not
always consistent. Therefore, rudder compatability between the Optimist and
the O’pen BIC should be taken on a case-by-case basis. Modification of the
Optimist rudder may be required before it can be used on the O’pen BIC.

do not conform to the original intended use of the boat will not be covered by
this warranty.
The warranty extends only to the initial purchaser.
The warranty is not valid without proof of purchase, which must include the date of
purchase, name of purchaser and serial number of the boat.
All warranty claims must be made through the authorised outlet where the

11- O’PEN BIC FAQ
Is the O’pen BIC stable ?
Yes, the “chine bilge” of the O’pen BIC hull design gives the boat a very stable
platform for sailing. On the water, the boat heels in the wind until it balances on its
bilge remaining stable and easy to sail.
Is the O’pen BIC difficult to rig ?
No, there are no shackles or complicated rigging systems on the O’pen BIC.
The O’pen BIC can be rigged and on the water in less than 2 minutes! With the
boom already attached to the sail, you simply slide the mast up the luff pocket of
the sail, attach the rig to the hull with the two snap hooks at the main sheet and
Cunningham, tension the Cunningham with the pull handle and go!
Is the O’pen BIC fragile ?
No, the O’pen BIC is manufactured in thermoformed polyethylene, a material
that is very resistant to impact shocks and abrasion. BIC Sport has been building
products in this material for over 30 years, and some of these products are still
being used on the water! Also of note is that contrary to products built in polyester,
polyethylene is a material that is 100% recyclable. The O’pen BIC is built with the
philosophy of sustainable development.
Is it easy to right the boat after capsize?
Yes, the cockpit of the O’pen BIC is 100% self draining, meaning that there is
never any water in the bottom of the boat either during sailing or after capsize.
Furthermore, with its light weight and stable “chine bilge” design, even when the
sailor is in the water the hull turns immediately into the wind, re-rights easily and
provides a stable platform for getting back into the boat. Getting back in is easy via
the stern of the boat which is completely open (hence the name O’pen BIC).
Can an adult sail in the O’pen BIC ?
Yes, as long as they weigh less than 65 kg (the ideal sailor weight for the O’pen BIC).
Can two kids sail together in the O’pen BIC?
Our testing, and the action photos and video of the O’pen BIC on our website,
show that the boat is still stable with 2 kids onboard providing that their total
weight does not exceed 90 kg.
Where can I race the O’pen BIC?
Contact your local sailing club to check if they are racing with the O’pen BIC.
Details of the O’pen BIC Class Association, together with national and international
racing events, will be published on www.openbic.com as soon as available.
GB

P. 14
STORAGE
How should I store the O’pen BIC?
All boats should always be tied down and secured when not in use (on a trailer or
boat racks). Ideally, the O’pen BIC hull should be stored:
- On racks that pass along the length of the boat.
- On a “soft” sling.
It is possible to rest the O’pen BIC hull on the ground, either on the bottom of its
hull, stern (be careful with the rudder mounting points) or side. Care should be
taken that the ground surface is not too abrasive. It is also possible to stack the
O’pen BIC directly one on top of another. If stacked, or stored upside down, care
needs to be taken with the black “non-skid” pads.
As with all polyethylene products, storing the boat on racks that pass across the
width of the boat (at a 90° angle to the vee) should be avoided. Point loading on the
vee of the boat can cause deformation of the material in this area.
… and the rig components?
All rig components can be stored in the rig bag provided. Ideally, the sail should be
rolled up and placed in the rig bag only when dry. The best way to dry the sail is
to leave it rigged on the mast and boom. The monofilm material can be damaged
when not under tension or if left to flap in the wind. Once in the rig bag, the bag
should be laid flat on the ground in a clean, dry place. If stood upright, the luff
pocket of the sail should be placed on the ground.
MAINTENANCE
Where can I get spare parts?
Please contact your original point of purchase for the O’pen BIC. They will either
have any spare parts you require on stock, or they will be able to get them for
you. If you still have problems, don’t hesitate to contact us here at BIC Sport:
Do I need to wash my gear in fresh water after every use?
In order to prolong the life of your O’pen BIC, it is best that the hull and all rig
components are rinsed in freshwater after each use on the sea. However, if the
O’pen BIC is used regularly (at least on the weekends), it is normally acceptable to
wash the O’pen BIC after every couple of uses. All components should be washed in
freshwater if they are to be stored for an extended period of time, ie. over the winter.
Do I need to take any particular care with the sun?
Yes. Care should be taken to avoid excessive exposure of all O’pen BIC components
to the sun, most particularly the sail. The harmful rays of the sun can cause the
material of any sail to breakdown over an extended period of time.
How can I clean the sail?
If necessary, warm water and mild detergent may be used to remove persistent dirt.
GB

P. 1 5
TRANSPORT
Can I put the O’pen BIC on top of my car?
Yes, the weight of the hull of the O’pen BIC is no more than 42 kg. However,
make sure to double check the maximum weight limit of your roof rack in your
manufacturer’s specifications or user guide. Also ensure that your roof rack is
correctly mounted on the car before driving anywhere.
What is the easiest way to transport the boat to the water’s edge?
For individual use, BIC Sport has a foldable trailer than can be purchased as an
accessory to the O’pen BIC.
Where can I get further information?
If you have any further questions on the O’pen BIC that are not answered here,

longueur (voir point suivant).
