approve tester.

remove . If engine is floo e , place throttle
in “FAST” position an crank until engine
starts.

object or metal tool as this may cause
flywheel to shatter in operation. Use proper
tools to service engine.

accumulation of grass, leaves, irt or other

ENGINE SPEED: Controlle by throttle lever on the engine.
Un er normal con itions, operate at full throttle to accom-
plish your task.
FUEL VALVE: Move fuel valve to "ON" position (Hon a
only).
CHOKE: Operate with lever on the engine.
THROTTLE: Move throttle control on engine to fast position.
Pull starting rope to start engine.
IF YOUR UNIT FAILS TO START:
See Troubleshooting on page 12.
INTENDED USE: This machine is esigne for removing
thatch from your lawn, renovation of existing lawns, an to
assist in oversee ing operations. The machine shoul not
be use for any other purpose than that state above.
Inspect machine work area and machine before operat-
ing. Make sure that all operators of this equipment are
trained in general machine use and safety.
Do not operate if excessive vibration occurs. If excessive
vibration occurs, shut engine off imme iately an check for
amage or worn reel, loose pulley bolts or set screws, loose
engine or lo ge foreign objects. (See trouble shooting
section on page 12).

STARTING ENGINE
RAKING OPERATION
Like all mechanical tools, reasonable care must
be use when operating machine.
MOW: Mow the lawn to it's normal cut height
DRY: Be sure grass is ry. Wet con itions can cause in-
crease amage to healthy grass.
SET DEPTH: With engine off, set the raking epth so that the
bla es just touch on a flat surface (i.e. riveway, or si ewalk).
START ENGINE: See above.
ENGAGE BLADES: Pull back on the bail on the operators
han le. NOTE: When engaging the blades in heavy load
conditions (i.e. heavy thatch, or very uneven turf), push down
on the operators handle lifting the front wheels slightly.
Engage the blades. Slowly lower the unit into the turf.
RAKE: Rake a small test area an examine the results.
Thatch shoul be remove an eposite on top of the healthy
grass. If excessive amage occurs to healty grass, a just the
bla e epth to ecrease amage. Continue raking the yar ,
working in one irection (i.e. north-south, or east-west).
NOTE: If a large drop in engine RP occurs, or the unit pulls
you forward and bounces during operation the blade depth is
set too low.
REMOVE THATCH: After raking, a layer of thatch will be
eposite over the top of the lawn. This thatch must be
remove prior to any fertilizing, see ing, or watering of the
lawn. We suggest the use of a lawn vacuum or wheele
blower for collection an removal of the thatch.
DO NOT- Use this machine on any surface other than a lawn.
DO NOT- Use this machine on slopes in excess of 19°.
DO NOT-
Allow persons unfamiliar with this equipment to operate it.
DO NOT- Allow chil ren to operate this equipment.
The bla es can be raise or lowere into the groun by height

epth can be a juste higher or lower.

knob on the top of the a justment lever. The bla es are lowere

gauge by using the epth scale locate on the right front corner
of the engine base.

RAKING/SLICING TIPS
THATCH: Thatch is a ense layer of ea grass, clippings,
an roots that buil s up over time at the base of of the lawn
preventing air, water, an fertilizer from reaching the soil.
This can cause shallow root evelopment an make a lawn
more susceptible to rought an isease. Thatch also
provi es an i eal environment for insects to hi e an
multiply. Perio ic removal of thatch will keep your lawn in
goo health.
HEAVY THATCH: Lawns with an excessive amount of thatch
will require multiple treatments for effective removal. Trying
to remove excessive thatch (greater than 3/4"[19 mm] eep)
in one treatment will amage or estroy the living part of the
lawn. It is best to remove heavy thatch in seasonal treat-
ments (i.e. spring, an fall).
CHECK: Before begining, it is best to evaluate the con i-
tion of the lawn by cutting one or more core samples from
area to be treate . A core can be cut using a piece of pvc,
or metal pipe. Hammer the pipe into the groun , remove it,
push the core out of the pipe an inspect it to etermine the
epth of thatch in your yar .
SLOPES: Rake slopes across not up an own. This is
much easier an safer for the operator an is better for the
lawn. Raking across will help to re uce runoff uring
watering an allow the slope groun to hol more see ,
fertilizer, an water. The units maximum operating slope is
35% or 19°.
DEPTH: The wi e range of epth a jusment on your unit is
provi e to allow for bla e wear. Setting the reel eeper will
not pro uce better, or quicker results. The flail reel is
inten e to be set so it just touches the surface on flat
groun . The slicing reel shoul be set even with the groun
for verti-slicing work, an set to a maximum 1/2" epth for
oversee ing jobs. Setting the reel eeper than this will only
result in premature wear on the unit (i.e. faile belt). If you
esire to work the groun eeper than the above gui lines
allow, it shoul be one gra ually in multiple passes.

riveway, or si ewalk).
START ENGINE: See Page 5.
ENGAGE CLUTCH: Pull back on the bail on the operators
han le. NOTE: When engaging the clutch in heavy load
conditions (i.e. heavy thatch, or very uneven turf), push down
on the operators handle lifting the front wheels slightly.

VERTI-CUTTING OPERATION
This unit is equippe with a fol ing upper han le for easier storage
an transportation. The han le can be fol e by sli ing the han le
lock loops(item 28) up. This releases the upper han le, allowing it to
be fol e over the unit.
FOLDING HANDLE
This unit requires two people to lift it. With the han le in the fol e
position, lift hol ing the lower han le an belt/shaft guar one on
each si e of the machine. Secure the machine in place uring
transport.

MAINTENANCE
BLADE WEAR AND ROTATING REEL END TO END
1. Wait for engine to cool an isconnect spark plug.
2. Close fuel valve on engine. (Hon a only)
3. Lean unit back onto lower han les an secure in place.
4. Inspect bla es for wear, an imme iately replace any bent or
cracke bla es. Measure the overall length of the bla e. (See fig. 1)
5. If bla es measure less than 3.0"(76 mm) in overall length they must
be replace . NOTE: We recommen replacing all the flails at once.

REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR
NOTE: Takes approx. 10 min. an requires 3/8" socket wrench with
extension.
1. Wait for engine to cool an isconnect spark plug.
2 . Remove (3) lock nuts(item 62) hol ing the belt guar (item 21) in
place. It is necessary to lower the height a just lever to reach the
locknuts on the guar . Remove the guar .
3. Remove the belt(item 9) by rotating the reel pulley(item 2) an
walking it out of the groove. Discar ol belt
4. Install new belt using same proce ure to walk the belt into the
groove.
5. With new belt installe pull bail ro back to engage position an
measure extension of i ler spring. Spring shoul stretch 1" to 1.25"
(25-32 mm) with bail engage . A just clutch cable as necessary to
achieve this extension.
6. Re-install the belt guar .

min. an requires two 1/2" socket wrenches with extension bar.
1. Wait for engine to cool an isconnect spark plug.
2. Close fuel valve on engine. (Hon a only)
3. Lean unit back onto lower han les an secure in place.
4. Remove (6) lock nuts(item 62) hol ing the belt an shaft guar s(item
21 &22) in place. It is necessary to lower the height a just lever to reach
the locknuts on the guar s. Remove the guar s.
5. Remove the rive belt(item 9) by "walking" it out of the groove on the
reel pulley(item 2).
6. Remove the (4) lock nuts(item 60) an washers(item 68) hol ing the
bearings(item 23) to the frame of the unit.
7. The reel is now free from the machine. Sli e the reel own an out of
the machine.
8. Remove the capscrew(item 71), lockwasher(item 57), reel pulley(item
2), key(item 42), an reel spacer(item 10) from the en of the reel.
9. Rotate the reel en to en , an re-install these items on the opposite
en of the reel.

in reverse or er of removal.

Never store engine in oors or in enclose poorly ventilate
areas with fuel in tank, where fuel fumes may reach an open flame,
spark or pilot light, as on a furnace, water heater, clothes ryer or
other gas appliance.
If engine is to be unused for 3 days or more, prepare as follows:
Remove all gasoline from carburetor an fuel tank to prevent
gum eposits from forming on these parts an causing possible
malfunction of engine. Drain fuel out oors, into an approve
container, away from open flame. Be sure engine is cool. Do not
smoke. Run engine until fuel tank is empty an engine runs out of
gasoline.
NOTE: Fuel stabilizer (such as Sta-Bil) is an acceptable alternative in minimizing
the formation of fuel gum eposits uring storage. A stabilizer to gasoline in
fuel tank or storage container. Always follow mix ratio foun on stabilizer
container. Run engine at least 10 min. after a ing stabilizer to allow it to reach
the carburetor.
