1.1 Legal considerations
This operating manual contains information necessary for the intended use, correct installation, start-up
and operation, and for the maintenance of the unit.
Understanding and observing the instructions in this operating manual are prerequisites for hazard-free
use and safety during operation and maintenance.
This operating manual cannot cover all conceivable applications. If you would like additional information,
or if special problems arise that you feel are not sufficiently addressed in this manual, please ask your
dealer or contact us directly.

1.2 Structure of the safety instructions
In this operating manual, the following harmonized denominations and symbols indicate dangerous
situations following the harmonization of ISO 3864-2 and ANSI Z535.6.
1.2.1 Signal word panel
Depending on the seriousness and probability of the consequences, dangers are identified with a signal
word, the corresponding safety color, and if appropriate, the safety alert symbol.

1.4 General safety instructions on installing and operating the temperature
measuring device TM 01
With regard to operating the temperature measuring device TM 01 and to its installation location, please
observe regulations BGR 120 issued by the German professional association for the chemical industry
(formerly ZH 1/119 laboratory guidelines issued by the employers’ liability insurance association) (for
Germany).
BINDER GmbH is only responsible for the safety features of the unit provided skilled electricians or
qualified personnel authorized by BINDER perform all maintenance and repair, and if components
relating to chamber safety are replaced in the event of failure with original spare parts.
CAUTION
Danger of overheating.
Damage to the unit.
∅Do NOT install the unit in unventilated recesses.
¾Ensure sufficient ventilation for dispersal of the heat.
The temperature measuring device TM 01 is not suitable for monitoring potentially explosive areas or test
vessels with explosive content. It must NOT be operated in hazardous locations.

The devices have been produced in accordance with VDE regulations and were routinely tested in
accordance to VDE 0411-1 (IEC 61010-1).

1.5 Intended use
The temperature measuring devices TM 01 are suitable for measuring temperature in a range from
-100°C to +350°C. With the communication software APT-COM™ (option) the measured data can be
recorded and stored via PC. The alarm functions of the communication software APT-COM™ (option)
makes the unit particularly suitable for the remote monitoring of important and temperature sensitive
processes.
Measurement can take place in dry or moist gases. The tip of the Pt 100 sensor can be immersed into
non-corrosive liquids.
The unit is not suitable for monitoring potentially explosive areas or test vessels with explosive content. In
these cases there is risk of explosion.
Observing the instructions in this operating manual and conducting regular maintenance work
(chap. 8) is part of the intended use.
2. Unit description
The temperature measuring device TM 01 has been specially developed for determination of temperature
in incubators, temperature chambers, climatic chambers or the ambient temperature.
It can be used both for reference measurements in certified laboratories, as well as for service purposes.
The measuring system consists of 2 parts: The measuring station, which remains outside the supervised
device, and the sensor, which is put in the center of the usable volume. Both parts are connected by a
cable, which can be laid across the door gasket of the supervised device without causing leakages.
The unit is characterized by extremely easy handling and fast reaction times, as well as the highest
accuracy.
The temperature is determined via a flexible Pt100 temperature sensor directly inserted into the
supervised device, and is displayed on the large LED display.
The measured data of temperature are given out to an RS 422 interface. Thus the measured data can be
simple recorded, stored and graphically represented via PC using the APT-COM™ 3 communication
software (option) developed by BINDER.
For monitoring, the nominal value set in the temperature chamber can be entered into the temperature
measuring device directly at the keys of the TM 01 or via APT-COM™ 3. If these nominal values exceed
or fall below the permanently set tolerances, this is reported by APT-COM™3 via its alarm system.

3. Scope of delivery, storage, and installation
3.1 Unpacking, and checking equipment and scope of delivery
After unpacking, please check the unit and its optional accessories, if any, based on the delivery note for
completeness and for transportation damage. If transportation damage has occurred, immediately inform
the carrier or post office/parcel service.
The scope of delivery includes the following items:
•Measuring station (235 mm x 115 mm x 255 mm) (W x H x D)
•Flexible Pt 100 sensor with fix cable 2.8 m, with protecting tube ∅6 mm, length 51 mm
•Operating manual Art. No. 7001-0132
If you need to return the unit, please use the original packing.
For disposal of the transport packing, see chap. 9.1.
Note on second-hand units (Ex-Demo-Units):
Second-hand units are units that have been used for a short time for tests or exhibitions. They are
thoroughly tested before resale. BINDER guarantees the technically flawless state of the chamber.
Second-hand units are marked as such with a sticker on the unit door. Please remove the sticker before
commissioning the unit.
3.2 Storage
Intermediate storage of the unit is possible in a closed and dry room. Observe the guidelines for
temporary decommissioning (chap. 9.2).
•Permissible ambient temperature range: -10°C to +60°C.
•Permissible ambient humidity: max. 70 % r.H., non-condensing
If following storage in a cold location the unit is transferred to the installation site for start-up,
condensation may form. Wait at least one hour until the measuring device has attained ambient
temperature and is completely dry.
3.3 Location of installation and ambient conditions
Set up the temperature measuring device TM 01 on an even surface, free from vibration and in a well-
ventilated, dry location.
CAUTION
Danger of overheating.
Damage to the unit.
∅Do NOT set up units in non-ventilated recesses.
¾Ensure sufficient ventilation for dispersal of the heat.
Permissible ambient temperature range:
•Measuring station +5°C up to +40°C.
•Sensor: -100°C up to +350°C
Permissible ambient humidity:
•Measuring station: 70 % r.H. max., non-condensing.
•Sensor: The tip of the Pt 100 sensor can be immersed into non-corrosive liquids
Installation height: max. 2000 m above sea level.

To completely isolate the unit from the power supply, you must disconnect the power plug. Install the unit
in a way that the power plug is easily accessible and can be easily disconnected in case of danger.
The temperature measuring device TM 01 must NOT be installed and operated in hazardous locations.

4. Installation of the equipment
4.1 Electrical connection
The temperature measuring device TM 01 has a fixed power connection cable of 1800 mm in length (G)
and a shockproof plug.
•Power supply fuse: 10 Amp
•Power supply voltage 230 V (1N~) +/- 10 %, 50/60 Hz
•Protection type (measuring station): IP20
•Prior to connection and start-up, check the power supply voltage. Compare the values to the data
specified on the type plate of the unit (chap. 1.3).
•When connecting, please observe the regulations specified by the local electricity supply company
and as well as the VDE directives (for Germany)
•Pollution degree (acc. to IEC 1010-1): 2
•Over-voltage category (acc. to IEC 1010-1): II
Insert the power plug of the measuring station into a specified socket.
CAUTION
Danger of incorrect power supply voltage.
Damage to the equipment.
¾Check the power supply voltage before connection and start-up.
¾Compare the power supply voltage with the data indicated on the type plate.
To completely isolate the unit from the power supply, you must disconnect the power plug.
Install the unit in a way that the power plug is easily accessible and can be easily
disconnected in case of danger.
5. Start up
5.1 Switching on the unit
Switch on the temperature measuring device TM 01 at the main switch (F).
Insert the Pt 100 temperature sensor into the device to be supervised without causing any leakages.
The measuring device is now ready for operation. The measured temperature is displayed on display (C).
The display (B) is only of relevance if the temperature is supervised via the communication software APT-
COM™ 3.

6. Performing a measurement
Take the unit into operation as described in chap. 6.
Place the sensor in the center of the usable volume and lead the cable over the door gasket to the
measuring station. Close the chamber door.
Due to the introduction of the sensor, there is a principle risk of contamination of the usable space of the
temperature chamber.
CAUTION
Risk of contamination of the usable space of the chamber.
¾Observe the hygiene and work regulations applicable in the laboratory.
¾Clean the sensor before and after use (chap. 8.1).
Set the temperature chamber to its operating temperature.
The sensor may be damaged or destroyed by unacceptable operating temperatures (above 350°C).
When setting the supervised chamber, ensure to never exceed the maximum temperature of 350°C.
CAUTION
Excess temperature > 350°C.
Damage to the sensor.
∅Do NOT exceed the maximum temperature of 350°C.
The waiting time until safe homogenization of temperature inside the temperature chamber is approx. 1
hour. Please observe the unit manufacturer’s information in this regard
The measurement results can be read off on the measuring station on display 1.
The measured values can be transmitted via the RS 422 interface (I) online to a PC with the APT-COM™
communication software (option) from BINDER. In addition, APT-COM™ enables convenient data
storage and alarming through warning messages on the PC as well as remote alarming via telephone
line. More detailed information on this can be found in the operating instructions for the APT-COM™
communication software.
7. Operation with the communication software APT-COM™ 3

The temperature measuring device TM01 is connected to the APT-COM™ 3 computer in the same
manner as all other BINDER-units with RS 422 interface.

7.2 Setting the TM 01 address
One individual device address is entered to any chamber with RS 422 interface of the APT-COM™ 3
computer. This address is also entered under the respective device type of the APT-COM™ 3
configuration window later on. The addresses No. 1 to 30 are available. In case the Alarm Box AB01 is
connected, the address no. 30 is assigned to the Alarm Box.

7.2.2 Setting the address in APT-COM™ 3
In the configuration menu “Chamber” of APT-COM™ 3, the TM 01 is configured as a new device. Having
entered the device name and selected the chamber type and the COM Port in window “Add New
Chamber“ you can enter the address that had been set at the TM 01 under “RS422 MOD Bus Address“.

Following confirmation with “Apply“, the TM 01 is now displayed with the selected settings in the
configuration menu “chamber”.

7.3 Setting the temperature set-point and the tolerance limits in APT-COM™ 3
First you need to create and start a measurement for TM 01 in APT-COM™.
Following measurement start the measurement window for the TM 01 measurement opens up.

8. Cleaning and service
8.1 Cleaning the measuring station
During cleaning, liquid may penetrate into the interior of the unit and lead to sparking on the housing. Pull
the power plug before any cleaning of the device.
DANGER
Immersion of the unit into liquid

Damage to the unit
∅Do NOT spill water or cleaning agents over the unit.
∅Do NOT immerse the unit into liquids.
¾Disconnect the unit before cleaning. Disconnect the power plug.
¾Completely dry the unit before switching it on again.
Disconnect the chamber from the power supply before cleaning. Disconnect the power plug.
Wipe the surfaces with a moistened towel. In addition, you can use non-corrosive standard commercial
cleaning detergents free from acid or halogenides. We recommend using the neutral cleaning agent Art.
No. 1002-0016.
For surface protection, perform cleaning as quickly as possible.
After cleaning completely remove cleaning agents from the surfaces with a moistened towel.

Never try to open the device in order to repair it. In case of problems please contact BINDER service at
one of the indicated service addresses (chap. 8.3).
CAUTION
Danger of corrosion.
Damage to the unit.
∅Do NOT use acidic or chlorine cleaning detergents.
We recommend using the neutral cleaning agent Art. No. Art. Nr. 1002-0016 for a thorough
and mild cleaning.
Any corrosive damage that may arise following use of other cleaning agents is excluded from
liability by BINDER GmbH.
8.2 Cleaning and decontaminating the sensor
Before and after each measurement, hygienically clean and disinfect the sensor.
Cleaning
Disconnect the chamber from the power supply before cleaning. Disconnect the power plug.
You can immerge the sensor tip into immerging into non-corrosive liquids. Cleaning can be performed
with pure water. In addition, you can use non-corrosive, acid-free household cleaning agents free from
acid or halogenides. We recommend using the neutral cleaning agent Art. No. 1002-0016.
Decontamination
Disconnect the chamber from the power supply before decontamination. Disconnect the power plug.
You can use the following disinfectants for spray disinfecting: Standard commercial non-corrosive surface
disinfectants free from acid or halogenides, alcoholic solutions. We recommend using disinfectant Art.
No. 1002-0022.
With every decontamination method, always ensure adequate personal safety.
8.3 Repair and calibration service
DANGER
Electrical hazard.
Danger of death.
∅The unit must NOT become wet during operation or maintenance works.
¾Disconnect the unit before conducting maintenance work. Disconnect the power plug.
¾Ensure all maintenance work is conducted by licensed electricians or experts
authorized by BINDER.
Guarantee / repair and maintenance tasks must only be performed by persons or workshops
that have been authorized by BINDER. Otherwise, BINDER will perform the tasks itself. If
you do not know whom to contact in the event of a fault, contact us and we will advise you of
the nearest authorized workshop.

8.4 Sending back the unit to BINDER GmbH
If you send a BINDER product to us for repair or any other reason, we will only accept the product upon
presentation of an authorization number that has previously been issued to you. We will issue an
authorization number after receiving your complaint either in writing or by telephone prior to your sending
the BINDER product back to us. The authorization number will be issued following receipt of the
information mentioned below:
•BINDER product type and serial number
•Date of purchase
•Name and address of the dealer from which you bought the BINDER product
•Exact description of defect or fault
•Your full address; if possible contact person and availability of that person
•Exact location of the BINDER product
•Contamination clearance certificate (chap. 11) via fax in advance
The authorization number needs to be applied to the packaging in such a way that it can be easily
recognized or be recorded clearly in the delivery documents.
For security reasons we cannot accept your delivery if it does not carry an authorization
number.
