Chapter 1 Introduction
BirdBlowerAssembliessupplyforcedaircoolingtoBirdLoads,includingTerm aline8890Seriesterminationsand
Tenuline8329Seriesattenuators.
TheBirdBA–300consistsoftwohighefficiencyfans,withverticalsidebafflestodirectairovertheload’sradiator
fins.TheblowerdoublesthenormalRFinputratingoftheinstalledload,e.g.a2.5kWloadcandissipate5kW.
TheBirdBA–310isidenticaltotheBA–300exceptthatithasathermoswitchwiredinparallelwiththepower
switch.Whenaloadequippedwithafan‐controlthermoswitchisproperlyconnected,theblowerwillautomatically
turnoninresponsetoariseinloadtemperature.Thissystemprovidesautomaticoperationsuitableforrejectload
service.

Chapter 2 Theory of Operation
LoadsconvertRFenergyintoheat.Thisheatmustbequicklytransferredtothesurroundingenvironmenttoprevent
damagetotheload.Thecoolantfluidsurroundingtheresistortransportstheheattotheradiatorwallsby
convection.There,airpassingovertheradiatorfinscarriestheheataway.
WhenaloadorattenuatorismountedontheBirdBlowerAssembly,bafflescovertheradiatorfinssothatthehigh
airflowgeneratedbytwoblowerfansisconfinedtopassingoverthefins.UptotwiceasmuchRFenergycanbe
dissipatedbythisforceddraftairflowascomparedtonormalconvectionaircurrents.Thus,a2.5kWloadwillsafely
dissipate5kWusingtheBirdBA–300/310.
Power Rating Reduction
Thebafflesinterferewiththefreeflowofnormalaircurrents,causinga50%reductioninheattransferefficiencyif
theforcedairflowisstopped.Thus,a2.5kWloadwillhaveitsmaximumpowerdissipationreducedto1.25kW.

Thischapterprovidesinformationforon‐siterequirements,unpacking,inspection,andpreparingtheunitforuse.
Unpacking and Inspection
1. Carefullyinspectshippingcontainerforsignsofdamage.
Iftheshippingcontainerisdamaged,donotunpacktheunit.Immediatelynotifytheshippingcarrierand
BirdTec hnologies .
Iftheshippingcontainerisnotdamaged,unpacktheunit.Saveshippingmaterialsforrepackaging.
2. Inspectunitforvisualsignsofdamage.
Note: Ifthereisdamage,immediatelynotifytheshippingcarrierandBirdTechnologies.
Mounting
PlacetheBlowerAssemblyinadry,dustandvibrationfreeenviron‐ment.Donotuseoutdoorsorinareasof
condensinghumidity.Allowatleast3"(7.6cm)ofclearanceaboveandonallsidesoftheunit.
BirdBlowerAssembliesareequippedforeitherportableuseorfixedinstallation.Themountingbracketsonthe
frontandrearfaceshavefourmountingslotsarrangedina412"x20
2332"rectangle(114.3x526.3mm).Usea
screwwitha38"(9.53mm)diametermax.
Installing Thermoswitch (BA–310 Only)
TheBirdBA–310requiresacontrolthermoswitch,P/N2450‐085,forautomaticoperation.Itisnormallyopen,
closingat155°C(311°F),witharatingof10A@120Vacand5A@230Vac.
Toinstallthethermoswitchontheload,proceedasfollows:
1. Replacetheventplugintheloadwiththeshippingplug.
2. Standtheloadonitsbackwiththeconnectorendup.Inthispositionthereisnodangerofthecoolantpouring
outthroughthesocketplughole.
3. Removethetopsocketplugusinga916"hexwrench.
4. Replacetheplugwiththethermoswitch.Sparinglyapplypipesealingcompoundtotheexternalthreads,only,
ofthethermoswitch.Donotcontaminatethecoolantwithpipesealant.
5. Checkforcoolantleaksuponcompletion.
CAUTION
TheBAsystemisdesignedforoperationinahorizontalpositiononly,withtheload’s
ventplugup.Donotuseinanyothermanner.
WARNING
Disconnecttheunitfromallpowersourcesbeforeservicing.
Theunitmaybeenergizedfrommultiplesources.
Thepotentialforelectricshockexists.
WARNING
Theventplugmustbeusedatalltimeswhentheloadis

Thermoswitch Connection (BA–310 Only)
ConnectthethermoswitchtotheBirdBA–310asfollows:
Note: Ifyourunithasaconnectoralreadyattachedtothethermoswitchcable,youdonotneedto
performStep1throughStep4.
1. Unscrewthelargeknurledring‐nut(A)atthelowerendofthecouplingjackassembly(See
Figure2
below).Pull
itoffthethermoswitchjack(B).Unscrewthesmallknurledcoverfittingfromthebaseplug(D)oftheconnector
toreleasethebase.
2. Threadthecontrolswitchwiresthroughtheclamp(E)withthewashers(F)insideandwithitsthreadedfittingin
place.Servicethecontrolswitchwirewithshorttipsandputspaghettisleevesoverthewireendsifnecessary.
3. Securelysolderthecontrolswitchleadstothelugs(G)oftheconnectorbase.
Note: Thering‐nut(A)mustbeinplaceoverthebaseplug(D)withtheknurledendfacingout.
4. Screwonthecoverring,thenfastenthecableclamp(E)inplaceandtightenbothyokescrews(H).
5. Puttheplugbackonthethermoswitchandtightenthenut(A).

Load Resistor
ToconnecttheBlowerAssemblytoaload,followtheseinstructions:
Removeoneoftheverticalpanelsbyunscrewingboth10‐32trussheadscrews.
Placetheloadontheblowerassemblyagainsttheremainingverticalpanel.BesurethattheRFinput
connectorfacesthesamedirectionastheblowercontrolpanel.
Lineupthebaseholesandlooselyscrewtheloadandblowertogetherwiththenutsandscrewsprovided.
Remountthesidepanelandlooselyreplacethetrussheadscrews.
Lineuptheholesonthesidepaneltabswiththoseonthefrontandrearfacesoftheload.Securewithfour
10‐32trussheadscrews.
Note: Itmaybenecessarytotemporarilyloosenthetwoscrewsintheunremovedverticalpanel.
Tightenallthesidepanelandbasemountingscrewssecurely.
Pushthepowercable’splugintothesocketattherearoftheblower,thenlockitinplacewiththeclamp.
AC Power Hookup
Theacpowersupplyrequiredis115/230VAC,dependingonthemodel,@50/60Hz,1.Theblowerisequippedwith
anIEC320“cold”(65°C)acinlet.
WARNING
Disconnecttheunitfromallpowersourcesbeforeservicing.
Theunitmaybeenergizedfrommultiplesources.
Thepotentialforelectricshockexists.
WARNING
Donotoperatewithsidepanelremoved.
CAUTION
Checkthelocalelectricalcodeforproperachookuppriortooperationoftheunit.
Makesuretheneutralorreturnhookupisonlyusedforthatpurpose.
WARNING

Chapter 4 Operating Instructions
AllBirdBlowerAssembliesareequippedwithacontrolswitchandaindicatorlight.Noinitialadjustmentsare
required.
BA–300 Controls
OntheBirdBA–300,theswitchislabeled“ON/OFF”.WhentheswitchissettoON,theindicatorlightwillturnon
andthefanswillruncontinuously.WhensettoOFF,theindicatorlightwillturnoffandthefanswillnotrun.
BA–310 Controls
OntheBirdBA–310,theswitchislabeled“MANUAL/AUTOMATIC”.WhentheswitchissettoMANUAL,thefanswill
runcontinuously.WhensettoAUTOMATIC,thefanswillbeturnedonwhenthecoolantreachesapreset
temperature.Theindicatorlightwillturnonwhenevertheunitisconnectedtoacpower.
Normal Operation
Turnthebloweron.Checkthattheindicatorlightison.
SettheBirdBA–310toMANUALmomentarilytocheckthatthefansareworkingproperly.
ApplyRFpower.
Operation Under Abnormal Conditions
Iftheindicatorlightturnsofforthefansstopunexpectedly,immediatelyturnofftheRFpowerorreduceitbyat
least75%(halfoftheload’soriginalpowerrating).Referto
"Troubleshooting"onpage8
tocorrecttheproblem.
Theloadcanbesubjectedtohigherpowerlevelsforshortintervals;refertotheloadmanualfordetails.
Shutdown
TurnoffRFpoweratthesource.
Waitapproximately15minutes,orfortheBA–310fanstostoprunning.Thiswillallowtheloadtocool
withoutcausingheatstress.
Turnofftheblower.
CAUTION
TheBirdBA–300/310BlowerAssemblywillderateaload’sspecifiedpowerby50%
wheninstalledandnotrunning.Iftheindicatorlightshouldturnoff,immediately
reduceRFpowerbyatleast75%.
WARNING
NeverattempttoconnectordisconnectRFequipmentfromthetransmissionline
whileRFpowerisbeingapplied.
LeakingRFenergyisapotentialhealthhazard.

Emergency Shutdown
TurnoffRFpoweratthesource.
Iftheloadisequippedwithaninterlockthermoswitch,RFpowerwillbeautomaticallyturnedoffwhenthecoolant
temperaturereachesanunsafelevel.Useofaninterlockthermoswitchisespeciallyrecommendedwhenusingthe
blowerassembly.

Thischaptercoverscleaning,inspection,troubleshooting,andspecificationsfortheBirdBA–300/310Blower
Assemblies.
Troubleshooting
Forcorrectionsrequiringrepairorreplacementofcomponentsseetheappropriatesection.Onlythosefunctions
withinthescopeofnormalmaintenancearelisted.Thismanualcannotlistallmalfunctionsthatmayoccur,or
correctiveactions.Ifaproblemisnotlistedorisnotcorrectedbythelistedactions,notifyaqualifiedservicecenter.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Theintakegrills,fan,andinsidesurfaceofthebafflesshouldbewipedfreeofdustanddirtwhennecessarywitha
cleansoftcloth.Excessivedustwillinterferewiththeefficientdissipationofheat.IftheBA–300/310hasbeen
standingwithoutaninstalledload,checkforobjectsthatmayhaveenteredthebloweropenings.
Whenaloadisinstalledontheblowerassembly,itwillbenecessarytopartiallydisassembletheblowertocleanthe
load’sradiatorfins.Followtheinstructionsbelow:

Theonlyregularinspectionrequiredistocheckfortheaccumulationofdustinlocationsthatmightimpedethefree
flowofair,i.e.,intakegrillandfanblades.Iftheblowerassemblyisattachedtoaload,cleantheradiatorfins
regularly.
Repair
Fuse
ThefuseislocatedintheACmoduleonthebackoftheblower.
Toreplacethefuse:
Correctthefuseburnoutcause.
Note: Commoncausesincludestuckorblockedfansorashortcircuitinthemotororblowerwiring.
Pressthelockingtabonthefusedrawerandremovethedrawer.

Indicator Light
1. Removethefour8‐32panheadscrewsfromthefrontandbackofthebaseframe.
2. Pullthefanguardstraightoffthebottom.
3. Removethequickdisconnectsonthelightandunscrewtheretainingsleeve.
4. Removethelightunit.
5. Removethelenswhilepressingbothlockingtabs.
6. Pressthehousing’scenterslotwithasmallscrewdrivertoreleasethelamp.
7. Pushthenewlampintothehousinguntilitsnapsintoplace.
8. Replacethelens,thenputthelightunitbackinplace.
9. Replacethefanguardandscrewinthe8‐32panheadscrews.
Fan
Toreplaceafanassembly:
1. Removethefour8‐32panheadscrewsfromthefrontandbackofthebaseframe.
2. Pullthefanguardstraightoffthebottom.
3. Carefullyunsolderthecolorcodedconnectingwires.Notetheconnectionsforresoldering.
4. Removethefourfanmountingscrewsandremovethedefectivefan.Becarefulnottolosethelippedretaining
washers.
5. Insertthereplacementfanwiththefanbladeassemblyfacingdown,towardsthefanguardgrill.
6. Insertthemountingscrewsandretainingwashersintothemountingholes.Turnthewasherssothatthelipped
portionfitsovertherimofthefanframe.Tightenthescrews.
Note: Ifthefanreplacedistheoneclosesttothepowersocket,reattachthegreengroundwiretothe
closestmountingscrew.
7. Soldertheconnectingwirestothesolderlugsonthemotorunitaccordingtothecolorcoding.
8. Replacethefanguardandscrews.
Note: Beforereattachingtheblowerassemblytotheload,checkthefansforfreeandunimpeded
movementoftheblades.
9. Connecttheunittoacpower.SettheswitchtoMANUALorONmomentarilytocheckthatthefanswork
properly.
