SAFETY
1. Read the manual completely before
attempting to operate the unit.
2. Check the wall outlet to insure for proper
grounding of the electrical cable. Have a
licensed electrician check the outlet if
you are not sure.
3. Don't use the unit if the cord, plug, filter,
motor or machine itself is in Poor
condition. Have a qualified serviceman
inspect and repair parts when
necessary.
4. Don't allow the Carpet Machine to be
used as a toy, or to run unattended at
any time.
5. Don't use accessories excePt as
recommended and provided by Bissell.
6. Don't abuse cord. Never carry tool by
cord or yank it to disconnect from
receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oil or
sharp edges. Don't close doors on the
cord or snag it under furniture or doors
with sharp edges.
7. Don't leave the cord lying on the carpet
once you have finished the cleaning job.
It may be a tripping hazard.
8. Don't unclog hose, clean unit, or change
filter until you have disconnected the
plug from the wall receptacle.
9. Do not pick up flammable or readily
combustible material, hot ashes, coals
or use unit in the presence of explosive
liquids or vapor.
10. Don't use cleaner in an enclosed space
where Jlammable, explosive or toxic
vapors are given off by oil-base paint,
paint thinner, gasoline, some moth-
proofing substances, etc., or in an area
where flammable dust is present.
11. Don't pick up burning cigarettes orother
smoking materials while using the
Carpet Machine.
12. Extension cord-When using the tool at
a distance where an extension cord
becomes necessary, a 3-conductor,
grounding cord of adequate size must be
used for safety, and to prevent loss of
power and overheating.

GROUNDI NG INSTRUCTIONS:
To protect the operator from electrical
shock, this unit is equipped with an
approved three conductor cord and
grounding type plug. This plug is to be
used only with the proper grounding
type receptacle. Your machine has
a plug that looks like that shown in
sketch (A).
An adapter, see sketch (B) and (C), is
available for connecting three-prong
type plugs to two-prong receptacles.
The green colored rigid lug extending
from the adapter must be connected to a
permanent ground such as a properly
grounded outlet box.

T1. CASTERS. After unpacking the unit
completely, place tank (item 68 in
parts view) upside down on table.
lnsert five casters in holes in tank
bottom. Push hard untilyou hear
and feelthem snap in place inside
the white caster sockets. Casters
should now swivel freely.

63) upside down. Place ball shut off
(item 6a) in motor hole near center
of inside of housing tank top.
Push frame (item 65) onto flange
surrounding the motor hole. Frame
may be hard to push on, since a
fairly tight fit is desirable. lf you
should experience difficulty, hold
rim of frame under hot running
water for about 30 seconds, then
slip onto flange while hot.
Put filter (foam filter sleeve item 66)
over frame covering entire frame.
Work foam filter sleeve around the
rim and slide it up to the very top.
lf you should later use your machine
as a gonventional dry vacuum, it will
be necessary to add a paPer filter
bag over the foam filter sleeve.
Such a paper filter bag is part of the
Wet/Dry Vacuum Accessory Kit,
model688 offered in the order blank
packed with this machine.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Never operate
your Carpet Machine without filter
elements in place while picking uP
dirt and debris. Not only will dust
be blown out by the machine, but
larger particles will likely be sucked
up into the motor, resulting in
damage, or its destruction.

Latches on the tank will line up with

on the tank will aid you. Note that
the two latches which are fairlY
closely spaced are near the front
of the machine. The inlet on the
housing tank top goes between
these two latches, above the label
on the tank. Your machine should
now be very stable when you roll it
over the carpeted floor.

trigger assembly. Line up the two
openings (vacuum tube & water line)
and slide together until button locks.

together. Push in button as you insert
the wand. Line up the button and hole...
the button will spring up, locking the
wands together.

OPERATION
1 . ,r"O"ration-First vacuum carpet thoroughly, then you are ready to
use your new Carpet Machine.
2. ,n"enctoseO bottle contains a premixed solution, ready to use. ln
the future, it is recommended you use concentrated Bissell 4 in One
Carpet Formula. See instructions on the enclosed bottle for mixing:
"Pour Carpet Formula to dotted line, add water to the top and mix."

5. Rttacn the water hose to any threaded kitchen or bathroom faucet.
Some faucets have external threads and others have internal threads.
Most have aerators or screen filters that unscrew. Unscrew the
aerator. lf use of pliers is necessary, wrap the aerator with tape to
avoid damage. lf an adapter is necessary (see diagram B) screw it to
the faucet. Screw the water hose to the adapter. This should be done
carefully and slowly to avoid damaging threads. lf you must connect
to a laundry type thread, an adaptor can be purchased at the local
hardware store. There are also adaptors available that will attach
to threadless faucets.

damage the system. Run water prior to attaching hose to avoid
cold water start.

7 . ,rrorto cleaning room, heavily soiled areas should be prespotted.
This can be done by releasing cleaning solution spray with the
release trigger, holding the wand approximately 6 inches over the
heavily soiled areas. This operation can be done without the vac
running and using only the water pressure from your faucet.
Once you have prespotted the heavily soiled areas, you can then
proceed to clean the entire room as directed below.
8. ,rrn on power by the on-off switch on the motor housing unit.
9. ,,"." the suction foot on the carpet and with one hand engage the
injector trigger releasing the spray of cleaning solution and hot water
into your carpet. Pull the unit toward you so that the vacuum picks
up the dirty water. Use gentle pressure for the best results
1 O, Back and forth scrubbing will help loosen spots, a final pass over the
carpet with the vacuum ON only will help the carpet dry faster.
11.Prespot traffic areas with quick initial pass, then clean entire room.
Check the liquid waste in the tank and empty before it
gets too heavy to handle. To empty, stop the motor and
remove the plug from the wall receptacle. Deposit the
liquid waste contents into a suitable drain. After the
tank is empty, return the cover to its original position.
To continue use, plug the cord into the wall receptacle
and start the motor.

12.|f your exhaust begins to spit foam, immediatety shut
off the motor, unplug the electrical cord and empty
contents of tank.
1 3, When finished with the cleaning job, clean the tank,
wand, filter before storing. Rinse the parts with water.
lmportant: After each use, take the metering line from
the solution bottle and put into a container of clean
water. Operate the injector to flush system. This should
be done by holding suction foot over sink or bucket.

INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT: BEFORE BEGINNING CLEANING
ANY UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE, READ THE
FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS VERY CAREFULLY
It is essential that you know the type of fabric you are
going to clean and if the fabric may be cleaned with
wet methods. Most popular upholstery fabrics may be
cleaned by wet methods, however, delicate or unusual
fabrics may be DRY CLEAN ONLY.lf you are in doubt
about the type of fabric, check with the dealer where
the furniture was purchased. Most fabrics are WEAR-
CODED by the manufacturers which details cleaning
methods for a particular fabric. Bring in a cushion or
arm cover if necessary. CLEANING U1HOLSTERY
WHICH /S NOT COMPATIBLE WITH WET METHODS
MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE FABRIC. KNOW
WHAT THE FABRIC /S AND HOW IT MAY BE
CLEANED BEFORE US/NG THE B/SSEtt
EXTRACTION SYSIEM ON UPHOLSIERY.
, Check the stuffing material if possible. Look inside
cushions and underneath the furniture. lf filling is
colored, it may bleed through and discolor fabric.
Most modern stuffing material is white to light yellow
-r and colorfast.
5. Test clean an inconspicuous area several hours
before starting to clean. Let test area dry completely.
lnspect for changes in color, bleeding, stretching or
shrinkage. TEST ANOTHER AREA tF tN DOIJBT. tf
test area is satisfactory, proceed with cleaning.
. Vacuum upholstery thoroughly. Follow dilution
directions on BISSELL 4 in 1 Extraction Shampoo
bottle. Clean one section of upholstery at a time by
slowly pulling upholstery tool towards you while
depressing the trigger to release cleaning solution.
Make a second spray pass at right angles to the first.
This will eliminate any streaking or uneven
appearance. To remove any excess moisture, repeat
this procedure, but without spraying cleaning
solution. The dirt and grime being removed may be
seen through the clean upholstery tool. DO NOf
OVER WET FABRIC. 1-4 spray passes shoutd be
adequate for most cleaning jobs. Over wetting may
cause shrinkage, bleeding, discoloration, and other
problems and must be avoided. Heavy soils and
tough spots may require BISSELL Aerosol Foam
F Upholstery Cleaner to loosen soil prior to extraction.
O. Cured, highly detailed or buttoned surfaces, such as,
chair arms and backs and skirting, may be easily
cleaned by holding upholstery tool 5-6 inches from
fabriO and spraying surface with cleaning solution. Do
not saturate. Vacuum loose soil and excess solution
with upholstery tool. Repeat procedure.
. The upholstery tool is designed to minimize over
spray while cleaning. lt is possible to clean up to
wood or painted surfaces without damage. Should
solution contact wood or painted surfaces, just wipe
it dry with a clean cloth.
TROUBLESHOOTING
TROUBLE:
Suction weakens, or cleaner runs hot.
POSSIBLE CAUSE:
. Clogged filter.
. Air leak.
i Obstruction in hose nozzle.
. Automatic shut-off stuck.
REMEDY:
. Clean dirt from vacuum filter.
. lf condition continues, change filter.
o Check all fittings for tight fit (nozzles,
hose, etc.)
o Check that tank cover is seated properly.
. Check extension wands, hose, etc. for
obstruction and remove if present.
. Shut-off ball should be on the bottom of
its cage. lf unit tips over during use, it is
possible for ball to seat. Turn off unit for
30 seconds to allow ball to drop back
into the bottom of the filter frame. lf ball
seats due to high waste water level, stop
and empty tank.
TROUBLE:
Unit stops spraying or stops injecting
cleaning solution.
POSSIBLE CAUSE:
o No water pressure.
o Obstruction in bottle.
o Obstruction in spray nozzle.
. Obstruction in injector unit.
REMEDY:
. Check faucet to be sure you still have
water pressure supplied to the unit.
. Check the solution tube to be sure that
the screen is clean. lf screen on solution
tube has come off, the metering orifice
will clog. lt is the small hole at the other
end of the tube. Remove the tube and
clean off the small hole.
AUTOMATIC
SHUT-OFF
This cleaner is equipped
with an automatic shut-
off that operates when
picking up liquids. As the
level of the liquid rises,
an internal float rises
until it seats itself against
a seal at the intake of the
motor, shutting off suction.
To continue, empty the
liquid waste from the tank.

1. Solution bottle "fills-up" with liquid.
2. Machine does not deliver any or very
little solution from bottle.
3. Broken or irregular spray pattern.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO FLUSH
SOLUTION BOTTLE AND ALL HOSES,
VALVES AND SPRAY NOZZLE WITH
CLEAN WATER AFTER EACH USE TO
PREVENT CLOGGING.

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Remove 40"solution hose (ltem 19) and wand
section (ltem 25).
2. Hold floor nozzle (ltem 24J in one hand and insert
cleaning tool into spray nozzle as shown.
3. Push tool thru nozzle untiltool can be seen in spray
nozzle groove. Then work cleaning tool back and
forth a few times.
4. Rub spray nozzle groove with fingernail to remove
any deposits and flush spray nozzle with running
water.
5. Replace 40"solution hose (19) and wand section (25).
6. Check unit for proper solution delivery.
