A moment of inattention while operating an appliance may
result in serious personal injury.
uWhere required, use personal protective equipment.
Protective equipment such as eye protection, dust mask,
non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used
for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
uPrevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the
off-position before connecting to power source and/or
battery pack, picking up or carrying the appliance.
Carrying appliances with your finger on the switch or
energising appliances that have the switch on invites
accidents.
uDo not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all
times. This enables better control of the appliance in
unexpected situations.
uDress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery.
Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving
parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught
in moving parts.
Appliance use and care
uBefore use, check the appliance for damaged or defective
parts. Check for breakage of parts, damage to switches
and any other conditions that may affect its operation.
uDo not use the appliance if the switch does not turn it on
and off. Any appliance that cannot be controlled with the
switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
uDisconnect the plug from the power source and/or the
battery pack from the appliance before making any
adjustments, changing accessories, or storing appliances.
Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of
starting the appliance accidentally.
uWhere applicable, keep cutting tools sharp and clean.
Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges
are less likely to bind and are easier to control.

Electrical safety

Using your appliance
Always take care when using the appliance.

uDo not operate your appliance in explosive atmospheres,
such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust.
uNever allow children or people unfamiliar with the
instructions to use the appliance.
uDo not allow children or animals to come near the work
area or touch the appliance supply cord.
uKeep children, bystanders and animals away while operating
an appliance. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
uThe appliance is not to be used as a toy.
uDo not immerse the appliance in water.
uDo not open body casing. There are no user-serviceable
parts inside.
Personal safety
uStay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense
when operating an appliance. Do not use an appliance
while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol
or medication.

Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric
shock.
uWhere appropriate. When operating an appliance outdoors,
use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord
suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
uIf operating an appliance in a damp location is
unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD)
protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of
electric shock.
Battery tool use and care (cordless appliance only)
uRecharge only with the charger specified by the
manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of
battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with
another battery pack.
uUse appliances only with specifically designated battery
packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of
injury and fire.
uWhen battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other
metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws
or other small metal objects that can make a connection
from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery
terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
uUnder abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the
battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush
with water. If liquid contacts eyes, additionally seek
medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause
irritation or burns.
After use
uWhen not in use, the appliance should be stored in a dry,
well ventilated place out of the reach of children.
uChildren should not have access to stored appliances.
uWhen the appliance is stored or transported in a vehicle it
should be placed in the boot or restrained to prevent
movement following sudden changes in speed or direction.
Service
uHave your appliance serviced by a qualified repair person
using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure
that the safety of the appliance is maintained.

uBe familiar with the controls and the proper use of the tool.

cord for signs of damage, ageing and wear. If a cord
becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from
the mains supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE
CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY.
uDo not use the tool if the cords are damaged or worn.
uWear stout shoes or boots to protect your feet.
uWear long trousers to protect your legs.
uBefore using the tool, check that your cutting path is free
from sticks, stones, wire and any other obstacles.
uOnly use the tool in the upright position, with the cutting
line near the ground. Never switch the tool on in any other
position.
uMove slowly when using the tool. Be aware that freshly cut
grass is damp and slippery.
uDo not work on steep slopes. Work across the face of
slopes, not up and down.
uNever cross gravel paths or roads while the tool is running.
uNever touch the cutting line while the tool is running.
uDo not put the tool down until the cutting line has come to
a complete standstill.
uUse only the appropriate type of cutting line. Never use
metal cutting line or fishing line.
uBe careful not to touch the line trimming blade.
uTake care to keep the mains cable away from the cutting
line. Always be aware of the position of the cable.
uKeep hands and feet away from the cutting line at all
times, especially when switching on the motor.
uWarning! The cutting elements continue to rotate after the
tool is switched off.
uNever operate the tool with damaged guards or without
guards in place.
uAlways ensure that the ventilation slots are kept clear of
debris.
uBefore using the appliance and after any impact, check for
signs of wear or damage and repair as necessary.
uTake care against injury from any device fitted for trimming
the filament line length. After extending new cutter line
always return the machine to its normal operating position
before switching on.
uDo not use the lawn trimmer (edge trimmer), if the cords
are damaged or worn.
uKeep extension cords away from cutting elements.

Safety of others
uThis appliance is not intended for use by persons
(including children) with reduced physical, sensory or
mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge,
unless they have been given supervision or instruction
concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible
for their safety.
uChildren should be supervised to ensure that they do not
play with the appliance.
Additional safety instructions for batteries and
chargers
Batteries
uNever attempt to open for any reason.
uDo not expose the battery to water.
uDo not store in locations where the temperature may
exceed 40 °C.
uCharge only at ambient temperatures between 10 °C and
40 °C.
uCharge only using the charger provided with the
appliance/tool. Using the wrong charger could result in an
electric shock or overheating of the battery.
uWhen disposing of batteries, follow the instructions given
in the section "Protecting the environment".
uDo not damage/deform the battery either by puncture or
impact, as this may create a risk of injury and fire.
uDo not charge damaged batteries.
uUnder extreme conditions, battery leakage may occur.
When you notice liquid on the batteries carefully wipe the
liquid off using a cloth. Avoid skin contact.
uIn case of skin or eye contact, follow the instructions below.
Warning! The battery uid may cause personal injury or
damage to property. In case of skin contact, immediately rinse
with water. If redness, pain or irritation occurs seek medical
attention. In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with clean
water and seek medical attention.
Chargers
Your charger has been designed for a specic voltage.
Always check that the mains voltage corresponds to the
voltage on the rating plate.
Warning! Never attempt to replace the charger unit with
a regular mains plug.
uUse your Black & Decker charger only to charge the
battery in the tool with which it was supplied. Other
batteries could burst, causing personal injury and damage.
uNever attempt to charge non-rechargeable batteries.
uIf the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the
manufacturer or an authorised Black & Decker Service
Centre in order to avoid a hazard.
uDo not expose the charger to water.
uDo not open the charger.
uDo not probe the charger.
uThe appliance/tool/battery must be placed in a well
ventilated area when charging.
The following symbols are found on the battery:
|Fire hazard! Avoid short-circuiting the contacts of
a detached battery (e.g. when storing the battery in
a toolbox).

Assembly
Warning! Avoid accidentally switching the tool on during
assembly.
Fittingtheguard(g.A)
uPlace the guard (10) onto the tool as shown.
uFirmly press the guard until it snaps into place.
uSecure the guard with the screw (14).
Warning! Never use the tool unless the guard is properly
tted.
Releasing the cutting line
In transit, the cutting line is taped to the spool housing.
uRemove the tape holding the cutting line (11) to the spool
housing (12).
Use
Warning! Let the tool work at its own pace. Do not overload.
Chargingthebattery(g.B)
The battery needs to be charged before rst use and whenever
it fails to produce sufcient power on jobs that were easily
done before. When charging the battery for the rst time,
or after prolonged storage, it will only accept an 80% charge.
After several charge and discharge cycles, the battery will
attain full capacity. The battery may become warm while
charging; this is normal and does not indicate a problem.
uInsert the charger plug (15) into the charger connector
(16) at the rear of the tool.
uPlug the charger into a mains outlet.
uSwitch on at the mains.
The battery can be left connected to the charger indenitely.
uWhen you want to use the tool, take the charger connector
from the tool and unplug the charger.
To maximise the lifetime of the battery, it is recommended to
keep the battery connected to the charger whenever the tool
is not in use. When the battery is full, the power consumption
of the charger is negligible.
Setting the tool to trimming or edging mode
(g.C-E)
The tool can be used in trimming mode as shown in g. C or
in edging mode to trim overhanging grass along lawn edges
and ower beds as shown in g. D.
Trimmingmode(g.C&E)
For trimming, the trimmer head should be in the position
shown in g. C. If it is not:
uWhile holding the secondary handle (4) with one hand,
take the collar (7) in the other hand.
uPush the collar in the direction of the trimmer head and
rotate it counterclockwise until the trimmer head engages
in the trimming position.
uRelease the collar.
uSet the edge guide (9) to the retracted position.
Edgingmode(g.D&E)
For edging, the trimmer head should be in the position shown
in g. D. If it is not:
uWhile holding the secondary handle (4) with one hand,
take the collar (7) in the other hand.
uPush the collar in the direction of the trimmer head and
rotate it clockwise until the trimmer head engages in the
trimming position.
uRelease the collar.
uSet the edge guide (9) to the extended position.
Adjustingtheheightofthetool(g.F)
The telescopic tube (6) allows you to set the tool to
a comfortable height.
uLoosen the collar (5).
uTo increase the height, slide the tube out.
uTo reduce the height, slide the tube in.
uTighten the collar.
Switching on and off
For your safety, this tool is equipped with a double switching
system. This system prevents starting the tool inadvertently.
Switching on
uPush the lock-off button (2) backward using your thumb
and at the same time squeeze the on/off switch (1).
uRelease the lock-off button.
Switching off
uRelease the on/off switch (1).
Warning! Never attempt to lock the trigger lever in the on
position.

Hints for optimum use
General
uIn order to achieve optimum cutting results, only cut dry
grass.
Trimming
uHold the tool as shown in fig. C.
uGently swing the trimmer from side to side.
uWhen cutting long grass, work in stages from the top.
Take small cuts.
uKeep the tool away from hard objects and delicate plants.
uIf the tool starts running slowly, reduce the load.
Edging
Optimum cutting results are achieved on edges deeper than
50 mm.
uDo not use the tool to create edges. To create edges,
use an edging spade.
uGuide the tool as shown in fig. D.
uTo make a closer cut, slightly tilt the tool.
Fittinganewspoolofcuttingline(g.G)
Replacement spools of cutting line are available from your
Black & Decker dealer (catalogue number: A6481).
uKeep the tabs (17) depressed and remove the spool cover
(18) from the housing (12).
uRemove the empty spool (19) from the spool housing.
uRemove any dirt and grass from the spool cover and housing.
uTake the new spool and unwind approximately 9 cm of
cutting line.
uFeed the cutting line through the eyelet (20).
uPush the spool onto the drive shaft (21) and rotate it
slightly until it is seated. Make sure that the cutting line is
not trapped under the spool and that 9 cm of cutting line
protrudes from the housing.
uAlign the tabs on the spool cover with the holes in the
housing.
uPush the cover onto the housing until it snaps securely
into place.
Warning! If the cutting lines protrude beyond the trimming
blade (13), cut them off so that they just reach the blade.
Windingnewlineontoanemptyspool(g.H&I)
Replacement packs of cutting line are available from your
Black & Decker dealer (catalogue number: A6170 (25 m) &
A6171 (40 m)).
uRemove the empty spool from the tool as described above.
uRemove any remaining cutting line from the spool.
uFeed 2 cm of cutting line into one of the holes (22) in the
spool as shown.
uBend the cutting line and anchor it in the L-shaped slot (23).
uWind the cutting line onto the spool in the direction of the
arrow (24). Make sure to wind the line on neatly and in
layers. Do not criss-cross.
uWhen the wound cutting line reaches the recesses (25),
cut the line. Let the line protrude approximately 9 cm from
the spool and hold a finger on the line to keep it in place.
uProceed as described above to fit the spool on the tool.
Warning! Only use the appropriate type of Black & Decker
cutting line. Ensure that cutting line is present in both sections
of the spool.
Storage
When the tool will not be used for several months, ideally
leave the battery connected to the charger. Otherwise proceed
as follows:
uFully charge the battery.
uStore the tool in a secure and dry location. The storage
temperature must always remain in the range of +5 °C to
+40 °C.
uBefore using the tool after prolonged storage, fully charge
the battery again.
Troubleshooting
If your tool seems not to operate properly, follow the instructions
below. If this does not solve the problem, please contact your
local Black & Decker repair agent.
Warning! Avoid accidentally switching the tool on.
Tool runs slowly
uCheck that the spool housing can rotate freely.
Carefully clean it if necessary.
uCheck that the cutting line does not protrude more than
11 cm from the spool housing. If it does, cut it off so that it
just reaches the line trimming blade.
Automatic line feed does not work
uKeep the tabs depressed and remove the spool cover
from the housing.
uPull the cutting line until it protrudes 11 cm from the
housing. If insufficient cutting line is left on the spool,
install a new spool of cutting line as instructed above.
uAlign the tabs on the spool cover with the cut outs in the
housing.
uPush the cover onto the housing until it snaps securely
into place.
uIf the cutting line protrudes beyond the trimming blade,
cut it off so that it just reaches the blade.
If the automatic line feed still does not work or the spool is
jammed, try the following suggestions:
uCarefully clean the spool cover and housing.

uRemove the spool and check if the lever can move freely.
uRemove the spool and unwind the cutting line, then wind it
on neatly again as described above. Replace the spool as
instructed.
Maintenance
Your Black & Decker corded/cordless appliance/tool has been
designed to operate over a long period of time with a minimum
of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation depends
upon proper tool care and regular cleaning.
Warning! Before performing any maintenance on corded/
cordless power tools:
uSwitch off and unplug the appliance/tool.
uOr switch off and remove the battery from the appliance/
tool if the appliance/tool has a separate battery pack.
uOr run the battery down completely if it is integral and then
switch off.
uUnplug the charger before cleaning it. Your charger does
not require any maintenance apart from regular cleaning.
uRegularly clean the ventilation slots in your appliance/tool/
charger using a soft brush or dry cloth.
uRegularly clean the motor housing using a damp cloth.
Do not use any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner.
uRegularly open the chuck and tap it to remove any dust
from the interior (when fitted).
Protecting the environment
ZSeparate collection. This product must not be disposed of with normal household waste.
Should you nd one day that your Black & Decker product
needs replacement, or if it is of no further use to you, do not
dispose of it with household waste. Make this product
available for separate collection.
zSeparate collection of used products and packaging allows materials to be recycled and used again.
Re-use of recycled materials helps prevent
environmental pollution and reduces the demand for
raw materials.
Local regulations may provide for separate collection of
electrical products from the household, at municipal waste
sites or by the retailer when you purchase a new product.
Black & Decker provides a facility for the collection and
recycling of Black & Decker products once they have reached
the end of their working life. To take advantage of this service
please return your product to any authorised repair agent who
will collect them on our behalf.

Batteries
ZAt the end of their useful life, discard batteries with due care for our environment.
uDo not short-circuit the battery terminals.
uDo not dispose of the battery(s) in a fire as this may result
in a risk of personal injury or an explosion.
uRun the battery down completely, then remove it from the
tool.
uBatteries are recyclable. Place the battery(s) in a suitable
packaging to ensure that the terminals cannot be
short-circuited. Take them to any authorised repair agent
or a local recycling station.
