RDS - Radio Data System
Sophisticated systems have
now solved many of the prob-
lems of listening to the radio
while driving:
The Radio Data System (RDS)
is used to broadcast supple-
mentary information on the
UKW (FM) waveband. Radio
stations that broadcast RDS
information provide the follow-
ing features:
— Radio stations that broadcast
on multiple frequencies, auto-
matically switch to the fre-
quency with the best
reception
— Once the RDS signals have
been processed, the station
name is displayed
— Supplementary information
can be displayed or called up
(e.g. text messages from the
radio station)
RDS data can however only be
received under good reception
conditions. With poor or dis-
torted reception, there may be
a prolonged delay before the
station name is displayed.
