PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Bose®Free Space®Model 16 Loudspeaker is a passive flush-mount ceiling speaker
with two variants, Model 16 and Model 16EU. The Model 16 is a world wide, general-pur-
pose use 8Ω/70V/100V speaker that complies with the requirements for Fire/Emergency
warning devices in the US. The Model 16EU is a version that includes accessories allowing
the loudspeaker to be used as a Fire/Emergency warning device in the UK.

DISASSEMBLY / ASSEMBLY PROCEDURES
Note: Refer to Figure 2 for the following
procedures.
1. Grille Assembly Removal
1.1 Gently pull the grille assembly (15)
away from the baffle (5). Be careful
not to mark the surface of the grille or
the baffle.
2. Grille Assembly Replacement
2.1 Gently press the grille assembly
(15) down into the baffle (5). Make
sure the grille assembly is fully seated
into the baffle.
3. Transformer, Driver & Rotary Switch
Assembly Removal
3.1 Perform procedure 1.
3.2 Using a cross-head screwdriver,
remove the six screws (1) that secure
the baffle (5) to the enclosure (10).
3.3 Make a note of the wiring configu-
ration and unplug the three wires from
the input terminals (2).
3.4 Using a sleeve barrel driver,
remove the nut that secures the rotary
switch (13) to the baffle (5).
3.5 Using a cross-head screwdriver,
remove the six screws (1) that secure
the driver (7) & transformer (11) to the
baffle.
4. Transformer, Driver & Rotary Switch
Assembly Replacement
4.1 Place the transformer (11), driver (7)
& rotary switch (13) into the baffle (5).
4.2 Secure the driver & transformer in
place using the six screws (1)
removed in procedure 3.5.
4.3 Secure the rotary switch into the
baffle using the nut removed in proce-
dure 3.4.
Note: Be sure the rotary switch is fac-
ing the right direction & make sure the
lock washer is at "7" position when
you replace the rotary switch onto the
baffle.
4.4 Respectively plug the three cable
wires onto the input terminals.Yellow
for "70/100V", white for "COM", &
blue for "8 Ω".
4.5 Secure the enclosure to the baffle
using the six screws removed in
procedure 3.2.
4.6 Perform procedure 2.

TEST PROCEDURES

Test Setup Diagram
1. Phase Test
1.1 Turn the rotary switch to the "8Ω"
position and apply a 6-10V DC signal
to the input terminals with the posi-
tive signal applied to the "8Ω" terminal
and negative signal applied to the
"COM" terminal.
1.2 The driver should move outward
when the DC voltage is applied.
2. Air Leak, Rub and Tick Test
2.1 Set up the system as shown in
Figure 1.
2.2 For the air leak, rub and tick, and
power sweep tests, all listening will be
done at a distance not to exceed 1
foot if the ambient noise is greater
than 65 db. An air leak is considered
to exist when audible while facing the
baffle of the speaker assembly.
2.3 Apply a 6 Vrms, 20Hz signal to the
8 ohm input with the rotary switch set
at 8 ohm to the terminals of the
loudspeaker.
Reject any speakers with air leaks.
Except for air leaks resulting from
defective driver or gaskets. Replace
any driver that has a rubbing or ticking
noise.
Small (quiet) ticks are acceptable if
they cannot be heard at a distance of
1 foot.
Note: There is a normal suspension
noise. To distinguish between a rub or
tick and suspension noise, displace
the cone slightly with your finger. If
the rubbing can be made to go away
or gets worse, then it is a rub or tick. If
the noise stays the same, it is a
suspension noise.
3. System Sweep Test
3.1 Set the rotary switch to the 8 ohm
position.
3.2 Apply a 6 Vrms, 80Hz signal to the
input terminal of the loudspeaker.
Change the oscillator frequency slowly
from 80Hz to 16kHz. Listen carefully for
buzzes, rattles, or other extraneous
noises from the driver or from the
internal parts. The whooshing noise
from the port around 80 Hz is accept-
able.
4. Transformer Tap Select Check
Apply a 70 Vrms, 100Hz signal to the
input of the loudspeaker under test.
Slowly change the tap selection, on
the unit under test, from the high
position (16W) to the 1W position. A
decrease in level should be heard for
each descending tap.

1. For units built before 9/27/02, use part number 259297. For units built after 9/27/02,
use part number 263817. The four underlined digits in the unit serial number located on
the product label are the date of manufacture (DOM) in Julian date format. For example,
9/27/02 would be 2270, which is the 270th day of 2002. These transformers are NOT
interchangeable.
