HRV Balanced Ventilation Systems
Homeowners Manual
WHOLE HOUSE VENTILATION
UK distributor for Brink Climate Systems

Balanced ventilation
By extracting used indoor air and supplying the same
amount of fresh air from outside a balanced
ventilation system is produced. Your ventilation
system combines this with heat recovery (HRV).
The principle of HRV ensures that the heat in the
extracted indoor air is transferred to the fresh
incoming air via a heat exchanger in the HRV unit.
The humid air from the toilet, kitchen and bathroom
is exhausted to the outside, but the warmth is
retained inside.
Up to 95% of the heat, which would normally be lost
outside now stays inside because of the HRV system.
Congratulations!
Your home is tted with a
Brink HRV balanced
ventilation system which
will ensure healthy and
comfortable indoor air
quality whilst minimising
energy usage.
Householders
information
This booklet has been
produced to give you, the
householder, some general
guidance on the use and
operation of your new
HRV balanced ventilation
system.
It also includes some
routine maintenance
instructions to ensure the
system operates at peak
eciency that provides an
energy ecient, fresh,
clean and healthy climate
- all year round.
BRINK HRV Ventilation System

In case of emergency
In case of an emergency, for example a
re or a spill of hazardous gas nearby:
•close all windows and doors (as
advised by the authorities).
•turn o your HRV system by the
on/o switch or if not tted by
disconnecting from the mains
supply.
•there is enough fresh air in your
house for a time.
•always follow the instructions of the
authorities in these emergencies.
•as soon as it is safe to do so, restart
the HRV system.
How can I ventilate intelligently?
Intelligent ventilation means it is
operating 24/7. Secondly it needs to
ventilate the correct amount - this
depends on the presence of people and
their activity.
You can imagine that during the use of
the bathroom or kitchen, extra
ventilation may be required.
The BRINK HRV has therefore 4
ventilation settings on the 4-way
switch.

Can I open a window?
Even with a balanced HRV system you
can open a window if you want.
However, in a well balanced ventilated
dwelling this is not necessary.
In the summertime, if the indoor
temperature is becoming too high,
opening a window can provide
additional ventilation with cooler air.
However, if you open the window in the
heating season, extra energy is wasted
in heating up the incoming cold air.
Remember the incoming air through
the ventilation system is ltered and,
providing the lters are regularly
cleaned, this air will be of a better
quality than the air coming in through
an open window.
Condensate drain
The appliance is tted with a
condensation drain with a water trap
somewhere below the unit.
If you get a drain smell near the unit it
is possible that the trap has dried out
through evaporation.
This can be simply resolved by relling
the trap with water.

Routine Maintenance
G3
lter
(optional
F7 Pollen lter
can be inserted

Filters must be cleaned frequently
approximately every 2 months (depending
on usage), and should be replaced every year
to guarantee proper operation of the
ventilation system and to ensure good air
quality. This is especially important in a new
building.
There are two standard lters in the unit,
one to lter the incoming air (bottom slot) to
ensure good internal air quality, whilst the
other lter (top slot) protects the heat
exchanger.
An optional F7 Pollen lter may be tted in
the bottom slot (replacing the standard
lter).
On the display or on the 4-way switch of the
Brink HRV you will get a signal when the
lters should be cleaned. A red LED-light on
the switch will show and the letters FILTER
will appear on the unit display .
After cleaning the lters or the tting of new
lters, reset the lter indication on the front of
the appliance.
The display ashes shortly to conrm the lter
indication is reset. After this procedure, the
display is back in position.
Cleaning of the supply or extract valves with
soap and water should be done on a regular
basis depending on their condition.

cleaning is not advised.

Summer Bypass
Both the Brink Renovent Excellent 300 and 400 heat recovery units are tted with a summer bypass
facility (it is not tted in the Compact 180 heat recovery unit).
Summer Bypass is a way of introducing cool air, usually at night, after a hot day.
In normal conditions it is not necessary, but a period of hot weather can lead to a build up of heat in
the building, which usually accumulates at the top of the building. It is then desirable to supply
cooler air from the outside which hasn’t been warmed by the heat exchanger. In this instance, the
bypass damper opens when the interior air temperature exceeds a preset temperature (normally
22 °C but this is adjustable) and the exterior air temperature is warmer than a preset minimum of
10 °C (also adjustable) but cooler than the extracted air.
If the outside temperature is higher than the interior temperature (i.e. the extracted air) then the
bypass will remain closed as the extracted air will tend to cool the incoming warmer air, although this
will gradually result in an increase in the internal temperature. This assumes that this is happening on
a hot sunny day, but at night, the outside temperature will drop and as soon as the temperature of
the outside air falls below that ofthe interior temperature (i.e. the extracted air), then the bypass
opens to let in the cooler air without it going through the heat exchanger.
It will do this until the interior temperature has reached a comfortable level again when it will revert
to normal operation.
For maximum benet, the inlet and supply ducting should be well insulated.
This makes it possible to supply cooler, fresh air from the exterior that does not pass through the heat
exchanger so it is not warmed by the extracted air. Fresh air supplied through the bypass is still
ltered, so maintaining the air quality, irrespective of the bypass setting. Whilst the bypass has some
benecial eects, it should not be relied upon as a method for cooling the building.
The operation of the bypass valve can be adjusted in the settings menu (see chapter 13 of the Brink
Installation manual).

The HRV system needs a yearly service
inspection.
Your installer will be able to oer you
an annual service which among other
checks will cover cleaning of the heat
exchanger and the fans. The heat
exchanger will usually only require
cleaning every 3 years. In case of
diculty contact CVC Direct.
Filters will need to be replaced each
year.
Wireless Control
Your Brink HRV unit will usually be
supplied with a wired 4-position
switch. A wireless control system is
also available to enable you to control
the speed settings from any one
position or from multiple positions e.g.
if you want to switch to boost from the
kitchen, bathroom or toilet.
To set up your house for wireless
control you will require a receiver and
the necessary number of transmitters.
Receiver
The receiver is easy to install and
should be placed close to the Brink
HRV unit.
The receiver has a cable with a
communication plug which needs to
be connected, together with a splitter
on the top of the HRV.
Transmitter
Several transmitters can be set for one
receiver for instance in the bathroom
as well as the kitchen. The transmitters
can control all speed options and a
timer option. By pressing the timer
button you can set the system to boost
for 15 minutes (when cooking,
showering etc.). By holding the button
for more than one second you can
select the boost position for 30
minutes.
