your FAX/MFCand fax it to Brother's Automated Fax Response System as your first

About Fax Machines
If you're a first-time fax machine use_;fax operation might seem a little
mysterious. You'll soon get used to the unusual fax tones on your phone line, and
beablesendandreceivefaxeseasily,:
Fax Tones and Handshake
Whensomeoneissendingafax,theFAX/MFCsendsfaxcallingtones,(CNGtones)
-- soft,intermittentbeepsat4-secondintervals.You'llhearthemwhenyoudialand
press|, midthey,'continueforabout40secondsafterdialing.Duringthattime,the
sendingmachinemustbeginthe"handshake"withthereceivingmachine.Eachtime
youuseautomaticprocedurestosendafax,Nu aresendingCNGtonesoverthephone
line.You'llsoonlearntolistenforthesesoftbeepseachtimeyoumlsweraphoneon
yourfaxline,soyouca1knowifyouarereceivingafaxmessage.
Thereceivingfaxrespondswithfaxreceivingtones-- loud,chirpingsounds.A
receivingfaxchirpsforabout40secondsoverthephoneline,andthescreen
displays"RECEBIC'IfyourFM_MFCissettotheFAXONIYMode,itwillanswer
eveucallautomaticallywithfaxreceivingtones.Eveniftheotherpartyhangs
up,yourFM_MFCcontinuestosendthe"chirps"forabout40seconds,andthe
screencontinuestodisplay,'"RECEI_%."% cancelthereceivingmode,press_.
WhenyourFAX/MFCisin FAX/TEL(F/T),it answerswith a shortbeep.Afterthis
beep,the FAS_MFClistensfor CNGtones,and then respondswithreceivingtones.
Thefax"handshake"isthetimeinwhichthesendingmachine'sCNGtonesand
thereceivingmachines"chirps"overlap.Thismustbeforat leasttwotofour
seconds,sothefaxmachinescanunderstandhoweachissendingandreceiving
thefax.Thehandshakecannotbeginuntilthecallisanswered,andtheCNG
tonesonlylastforabout40secondsafterthenumberisdialed.Therefore,it's
importantforthereceivingmachinetoanswerthecallinasfewringsaspossible.
Whenyouhaveanexternaltelephoneansweringdevice(TAD)onyourfaxline,
Nut TADwilldeterminethenumberofringsbeforethecallisanswered.Pat"special

Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the jack labeled LINE on the left

Special Line Considerations
Roll Over Phone Lines
Aroll over phone system is a group of twoor more separate telephone lines that
pass incoming calls to each other ifthey are bust,:The calls are usually passed
down or "rolled over" to the next available phone line in a preset order.

Two-Line Phone System
Atwo-line phone system is nothing more than two separate phone numbers on
the same wall outlet. The two phone numbers can be on separate jacks (RJ11) or
combined into one jack (RJ14). Your Fb_MFC must be plugged into an RJ11
jack. RJ11 and RJ14 jacks may be equal in size and appearance and both may
contain 4 wires (black, red, green, yellow). Totest the type of jack, plug in a
two-line phone and seeif it can access both lines. If it can, you must separate the
line for your FAXJMFC.

installedandslaveorjumponeofthephonenumberstoit.
Thethirdwayistheeasiest:Buya triplexadapter.Youcanpluga triplexadapter
intoanRJ14outlet.ItseparatesthewiresintotwoseparateRJll jacks(Line1,
Line2) anda thirdRJ14jack(Lines1and2).PlugtheF_"_IFCintoLine2of
thetriplexadapter.
