Getting Started
PlugtheA/CadapterintoanA/Cpowersourceandplugthe
connectorintothebackoftheEthernetConverter.Itwilltake
about30secondstobootup.
ScrewtheantennaintothetoporsideofyourWirelessEthernet
Converterasshown.Youmayalsoattachtheoptionalstand
ifyouwish.Forbestperformance,orienttheantennato
pointstraightup.Ifyouwanttosubstituteadifferent2.4GHz
antenna,makesurethatithasthecorrectRP-SMAconnector.

IfyourWirelessRouter/AccessPointsupportsAOSS,thenAOSScancongureyourwireless
networkforyou.TocongureyournetworkwithAOSS:
•ConrmthattheWirelessRouter/AccessPointandtheEthernetConverterarebothpoweredup.
•HoldintheAOSSbuttonontheWirelessRouter/AccessPointfor3seconds.
•HoldintheAOSSbuttonontheEthernetConverterfor3seconds.
AOSSwilltakeaboutaminutetocongureyourwirelessnetwork.Whennished,theAOSSLEDs
onboththeWirelessRouter/AccessPointandtheEthernetConverterwillstopblinkingandstaylit.

IfAOSSisused,thenanynon-AOSSwirelessclientdevicesinyournetworkwillhavetobe
manuallyre-conguredtoconnecttotheRouter/AccessPointinAOSSmode;pleaseconsultyour

AOSSconguresyourSSID,encryptiontype,wireless
channel,andencryptionkey,andmakesasecure
connectionbetweenyourwirelesscomponents.Youmay
stillneedtorunyourrouter'scongurationutilityto
congureyourinternetconnection.
IfAOSSdoesnotnishproperly,powercycleboththe
Router/AccessPointandtheEthernetConverterand
attempttheAOSSprocessagain.AOSSworksbestwhen
therouterandtheEthernetConverterarephysicallyclose.Youcanalwaysmovethem
furtherapartwhencongurationiscomplete.

Ifyourwirelessrouter/accesspointdoesn'tsupportAOSS,you'llneedtocongure
theaccesspointmanually.Therearetwowaystodothis:youcanusetheEthernet
ConverterManagersoftwareifyouhaveaWindowsPConthenetwork(98/ME/2000/XP
only),oryoumayuseawebbrowser.Webbrowsercongurationmaybedonewithany
computerrunningarecentwebbrowser,includingMacintoshandLinuxmachines.Skip
to page 11forwebbasedconguration.

IfyouhaveaWindows98/ME/2000/XPmachinewithaCD-ROMdriveavailableonyour
computernetwork,theEthernetConverterManagermakesitsimpletocongurethe
EthernetConverter.ThefollowingstepswillguideyouthroughconguringtheEthernet
Converter via the Ethernet Converter Manager.
ConnectoneoftheEthernetConverter'sLANportstoanopenportonyournetwork's
router,switchorhubwiththeincludednetworkpatchcable.Iftherearenoports
available, you can temporarily remove a computer or other connected device and plug
the Ethernet Converter to that port. You can plug the Ethernet Converter directly to the
conguringcomputer,butwillhavetoconguresettingsmanuallyasdescribedonpage
17.
Oncethenetworkcablehasbeenpluggedin,plugtheEthernetConverter'sACAdapter
intoanavailablepoweroutlet.Thenattachthepowerconnectortothebackofthe
EthernetConverter.Thebootupprocesstakes30secondsandiscompletewhenboth
theWirelessandEthernetLEDsarelit.
ReturntothePCdesignatedforcongurationandinserttheincludedEthernetConverter
CD-ROMintothePC'sCD-ROMdrive.
TheEthernetConverterUtilityshouldlaunchautomatically.Ifitdoesnot,browseyour
CD-ROMdriveinWindowsandrunthesetup.exe program.

ClickonEthernet Converter Manager.
TheEthernetConverterManagersoftwarewill
run. If the search doesn't begin automatically,
select the Search for an Ethernet Converter option
from the Editdropdownmenu.

TheEthernetConverterManagerwillsearchforall
BuffaloEthernetConvertersonyournetwork.The
processusuallytakeslessthanoneminute.Once
completed, the Search Resultswindowwillappear.
Search ResultswilllistallBuffaloEthernetConverters
onthenetwork.IfthereismorethanoneEthernet
Converterinthelist,selecttheoneyouwouldliketo
congure.PresstheIP Settings button to continue
conguration.
The IP Address Setupwindowwillopen.Checkthe
boxnexttoUse DHCP and press the OK button. The
EthernetConverterwillreboot;thisprocessmaytake
as long as a minute. The Ethernet Converter Manager
willthenre-scanthenetworkforEthernetConverters.
NOTE: IfyouwanttogiveyourEthernetConverter
astaticIPaddress,thanyoucanskipcheckingUse
DHCPandenteryourownIPAddressandSubnet
maskinthecoorespondingelds.IfusingastaticIP
address,itisrecommendedtopickoneinsideyour
existingnetwork'ssubnet.

Search Resultswillappearagain.Ifmorethanone
Ethernet Converter is present, select the proper
Ethernet Converter from the list. Then press the
Congure button.
TheEthernetConverterManagerwillconnect
youtotheEthernetConverter'swebbased
congurationtool.Youwillbepromptedfora
usernameandpassword.
By default, the username is root and there is no
password.
After entering the user name, press the OK button.
Pleaseskiptopage 13tocontinueconguration.

YoumayalsoentertheWeb-basedCongurationToolwithoutusingthesoftware.This
maybenecessarytoconguretheconverterwithouttheuseofaWindowsPC.Usethis
methodwithLinux,Macintosh,otherothernon-WindowsPCstoaccesstheWeb-based
CongurationTool.
RefertoyouroperatingsystemdocumentationonhowtocongureaStaticIPaddress.
TheEthernetConverterhasanIPaddressof1.1.1.1bydefault.You'llneedtocongure
thecomputertobeonthesamesubnet;anIPaddressof1.1.1.2isrecommendedforthe
computer.
Withtheincludednetworkpatchcable,connectoneoftheEthernetConverter'sLAN
portstoanopenEthernetportonarouter,switch,orhubonyournetwork.Alternately,
youcanplugtheEthernetConverterdirectlytotheconguringcomputer'sEthernetport.
Oncethenetworkcablehasbeenpluggedin,plugtheEthernetConverter'sACAdapter
intoanavailablepoweroutlet.Thenattachthepowerconnectortothebackofthe
EthernetConverter.Thebootprocesstakeslessthanaminuteandiscompletedwhen
both the Wireless and Ethernet lights are lit.
Configuration without PC Software

OnceyourcomputerhasaStaticIPaddressof1.1.1.2,
openyourwebbrowserandenter1.1.1.1 by typing it
intotheAddresseldandthenpressingEnter on your
keyboard.
Youwillbepromptedforausernameandpassword.
By default, the username is root and there is no

TheWebBasedCongurationToolletsyou
changetheEthernetConverter'sconguration.
ThroughWebBasedConguration,youcan
changethewirelessnetworktheEthernet
Converterisassociatedwith,theIPaddressofthe
Ethernet Converter, and other important settings.
Afterlogginginonthepreviouspages,youwill
begreetedbythemaincongurationpage.
Thispagequicklyshowsyouwhatnetworkthe
EthernetConverterisconnectedtoaswellas
allowingyoutosearchforavailablenetworks.
TherststepinWebBasedCongurationshould
betosearchforanavailablewirelessnetwork.
To do this, press the Search button in the SSID
(Network Name) table.
After pressing the Search button, the Search for
SSIDprogramwillndanynetworksinyourarea
that are broadcasting their SSIDs. Select the
wirelessnetworkthatyouwouldliketoconnectto
and press the Select button.

Afterselectingawirelessnetwork,youwillbereturnedtothemainWebBased
Congurationpage.
IfthewirelessnetworkyouareattemptingtoconnecttoisnotbroadcastingitsSSID,
thenyouwillberequiredtomanuallyentertheSSIDintotheSSIDeld.Aftertheeldis
populatedwiththeproperSSID,presstheApply Settings button.
Ifencryptionisenabledonthewirelessnetworkyou'veselected,youwillneedtoenterthe
encryptionkey(seepage 15).

ClickRefresh to see the current status of your
wirelessconnection.SSID (Network Name)willbe
populatednow(seepages 13-14ifitisn't).
Belowit,Wireless Network Type may be set to
Infrastructure if you're connecting the Wireless
Ethernet Converter to a router or access point, or Ad
hocifyou'reconnectingittoanotherwirelessclient.
Encryption Mode should be set to use the same type
ofencryptionastheotherwirelessdevicesonyour
network.TheEthernetConvertersupportsWEP128,
WEP64,TKIP,andAESencryption.AESishighly
recommendedifallyourotherwirelessdevices
support it.
Totherightoftheencryptiondropboxistheeldwhereyouenteryourencryption key.
SSID, Encryption Mode, and Encryption Keymustbesetexactlythesameinallofyour
wirelessdevices,ortheywillnotbeabletocommunicatewitheachother.
Checkyourrouter/accesspoint'sdocumentationifyoudon'tknowwhattheSSID,
EncryptionMode,andEncryptionkeyareonyournetwork.

Onceyou'veconguredthesebasicsettings(especiallySSID, the Encryption Mode, and
the Encryption Key),theEthernetConvertershouldbeabletoconnecttoyourother
wirelessdevices.Tocontinueconguringadvancedsettings,pleaseskiptothenextpage.
DisconnecttheEthernetConverterfromthewirednetworkconnectionandmoveittoits
desired location.
YoumayconnectfourwiredEthernetdevicestotheEthernetConverter'sLANports.
ConnecteddevicesmayincludeXBoxes,PS2s,HomeTheaterequipment,switches,
hubs,oranothercomputersystem.PlugtheACAdapterintoanearbypoweroutletand
connectittotheEthernetConverter.Powercycleanydevicesthatareconnectedtothe
Ethernet Converter.
IfyousetastaticIPaddressonyourcomputeronpage 11, then restore the computer's
IPsettingstoobtain an IP Address automatically.
Congratulations!YourEthernetConverterissetup.Ifyouneedtocongureyour
Ethernet Converter further, use the Ethernet Converter Search Utility and press the
Congure button (page 8).TurntothenextpageforAdvanced Settings.

Mostuserswillneverneedtochangeanysettingsfortheir
Wireless Ethernet Converter besides the basic ones in the
maincongurationwindow,coveredonpages 13-15. If
you'reoneoftheexceptions,youmayaccessAdvanced
Settings by pressing the blue Advanced button in the bottom
rightcornerofthecongurationpage.
This is the Advanced Settings page. On the left, you
maychoosefromWirelessSettings,NetworkSettings,or
Management.Whenthepagerstopens,it'satWireless
Settings. Changes on the Advanced Settings page are not
applied until the Set button is pressed.

MAC Address - By default, the Ethernet Converter transmits
itsownMACaddress,butyoumaychangethissothatit
transmitstheMACaddressoftherstdevicepluggedintoit
totransmitadatapacket.
SSID-IntheSSIDeld,entertheSSIDnameofthewireless
networkthattheEthernetConverteristoconnectwith.Use
thesameSSIDasyourrouter/accesspoint.Youmaynd
available broadcasting SSIDs by pressing the Search button.
Wireless Network Type-ChoosebetweenInfrastructure
(AccessPointBased)orAd-hoc(ClienttoClient).
Wireless Channel-ThechannelwillbeautomaticallyselectedinInfrastructurenetworks.
ForAd-hocnetworks,bothclientsmustbesettothesamechannel.
Wireless Mode-ThewirelessmodeonlyappliestoAd-hocconnections.IftheEthernet
ConverterismakinganAd-hocconnectionwithan802.11bclient,thenselect802.11b
fromthedropdownmenu.Ifan802.11gclientisconnectingtotheEthernetConverter
then select the Auto-802.11g-802.11b option.
BSS Basic Rate Set - The basic rate set only applies to Ad-hoc connections. Select the
properratesetfortheAd-hocclienttheEthernetConverterisgoingtoassociatewith.
Older routers may require that you reduce the BSS Basic Rate set to Default(11b). If you
are unsure of the correct setting, try Default.

Frame Bursting Mode-FrameBurstingtechnologyallowsforquickerwirelessnetwork
speedsbyreducingtheoverheadforeachwirelesspacket.Ifyouraccesspointsupports
it, 125* High-Speed Mode offers the best overall performance of the frame bursting modes.
You may leave this set to the 125* High Speed Modeatalltimes;ifacompatableaccess
pointisnotavailablethenthedevicewilloperateasastandard802.11gdevice.
Wireless Output Power-Thewirelessoutputpowersettingchangesthepowerof
theEthernetConverter'sinternalradio.Reducingtheoutputpowercanoftenreduce
interferencewithotherdevices.Youshouldleavetheoutputpowersetat100%unless
youwanttoreducerangeorinterferencewithother2.4GHzdevicesisapparent.
Data Encryption-SelectWEP64,WEP128,TKIP,orAESencryptionfromthedropbox.If
WEPisselected,thenaWEPkeyorseriesofWEPkeysmustbeenteredintotheWEPkey
eld(s).PleaseselectwhetherthespecickeyisASCIIorHEXfromthepulldownlistnext
tothekeyelds.IfTKIPorAESisused,thenenterthepre-sharedkeyintheWPA-PSK
eld.

Automatic Assignment (DHCP Server) - This setting
allowstheEthernetConvertertoobtainitsIPaddress
automaticallyfromaDHCPserveronthenetwork.
Manual Assignment - This assigns the Ethernet
Converteraspecic("Static")IPaddress.IfaStaticIP
addressisselected,youmustenteraSubnetMaskas
well.
NOTES: ToconguretheEthernetConverterinthefuture,ausermustbothknowitsIP
address,and,beonthesamesubnet.BecarefulwhenchangingtheEthernetConverter’s
IPaddress!
IfchangestotheEthernetConverter’sIPaddressmakeitdifcultforyoutoaccessthe
web-basedcongurationutility,rememberthatyoucanusetheEthernetConverter
ManagementsoftwaretorecongureorresetDHCP(seepages8-9)oraStaticIP
address.IftheEthernetConverter'sIPaddresshasrevertedtothedefault1.1.1.1,you
maymanuallycongureyourcomputertoanIPaddressonthesamesubnet,suchas
1.1.1.2,allowingittoconnecttotheEthernetConverter(seepages11-12).Don'tforget
tochangeyourcomputer'sIPaddressbackwhenyou'venishedconguringtheEthernet
Converter.
TheIPAddressdoesnotneedtobeintherangeoftheDHCPserver'sscopeto
successfullypassDHCPrequeststonetworkclientsbehindtheEthernetConverter.
