The Instabus / IR converter is a product of
the instabus EIB System and conforms to
the EIBA directives. The Instabus / IR con-
verter makes use of modern electronics and
electrical installation technology to commu-
nicate with other EIB and IR equipment in
the house and can therefore be used flexibly
for many applications and in conformity
with the user's desires.
The present instructions describe the most
essential functions and the necessary ope-
rating steps.
In case of queries or demands concerning
the functions of the Instabus / IR converter,
please contact your electrical fitter.
Safety warnings
Attention:
This device does not contain any parts to be
serviced by the user. Electrical equipment
must be installed and fitted by qualified
electricians only.
Failure to observe any of the instructions
may result in irreparable damage, in fire
and in other hazards.

Function
The Instabus EIB / IR converter
• receives IR signals from standard IR re-
mote controls and operates lighting, hea-
ting and other equipment in accordance
with the commands received (FIG. A).
• transmits IR signals to TV, audio or other
remote-controlled equipment in the room
(FIG. B).
Thus, it is possible to control the electrical
installation in a simple and comfortable way
by means of remote controls (a large num-
ber of commercial-grade IR remote controls
can be used)1or to control, for instance,
electronic audio and video equipment via
the electrical installation also from other
rooms.
These applications can also be combined.
The IR remote control can easily and fast be
adapted to the Instabus / IR converter.

Programming the remote control
N.B.: The EIB equipment which the
Instabus / IR converter is intended to control
or the EIB sensors controlling the Instabus /
IR converter must have been programmed
into the device beforehand during commis-
sioning.
If it is desired to control other consumers,
the device must be reprogrammed. For
reprogramming, the EIB commissioning
software (e.g. ETS3) is needed. In this case,
contact your electrical fitter.
For programming an IR remote control key
into the Instabus / IR converter proceed as
follows:
1. Slide the switch at the bottom of the
device into the 'LEARN' position. The IR
window is now lit up green.
2. Trigger the selected sensor function (e.g.
by depressing an EIB pushbutton briefly
or also for a longer time). The IR window
is now lit up orange.
3. Actuate the key of the remote control to
be programmed briefly two times.
The distance between the remote cont-
rol and the Instabus / IR converter
should be approx. 30...40 cm.
The IR window confirms the first key-
press by flashing orange once and the
second key-press by flashing orange
three times. After this cycle the window
shines green again.
4. Continue to program further IR channels
(step 2) or terminate the 'Learn' mode
(slide switch to position 'ON').
Example
iImportant
• Make sure during programming of the IR
keys that the keys of the remote control
are pressed as briefly as possible. The IR
command will other-wise be stored re-
peatedly so that there may be mal-
functions.
• An IR window flashing three times red in-
dicates a fault.
The IR window shines green now. Repeat
the procedure with step 2 or abort (slide
switch to position 'ON').
• If the slide switch is in the 'LEARN' posi-
tion, and if no confirmation has been gi-
ven within 2 minutes, the Instabus / IR
converter terminates the procedure. The
IR window flashes green (in one-second
intervals) and the device has no function.
End the 'Learn' mode (slide switch in
pos. 'ON'.
• Note the key assignment of the IR remo-
te control.

What to do when...
... equipment to be controlled does not
respond?
• Slide switch in position 'ON'?
• Instabus / IR converter in sight contact
with equipment to be controlled?
• Check the batteries of the remote control
for condition.
• Is the IR key concerned still programmed?
Repeat programming in acc. with
chapter 4.
• Has the IR memory been deleted
(chapter 7)?
Repeat programming in acc. with
chapter 4.
• IR window flashing green?
Check the position of the slide switch and
move to position 'ON'.
• IR window shining red?
The internal energy source is exhausted
and needs recharging. Wait a few minu-
tes until the red light goes out. If this is
not the case, contact the EIB installation
fitter.
... the remote control cannot be program-
med?
• Check that the remote control can be
used in combination with the Instabus / IR
converter (see chapter 6).
• Check the batteries in your remote control
for condition.
... further EIB appliances – e.g. pushbut-
tons, luminaires, blinds/shutters, etc. –
are to be used in combination with the In-
stabus / IR converter ?
• The Instabus / IR converter must be repro-
grammed. Contact the EIB installation fit-
ter.
Suitable IR remote controls
The remote controls mentioned below can
be used in combination with the Instabus /
IR converter .
For detailed information, read the Technical
Data of your IR remote control (part of the
operating instructions of the remote control
or of the equipment to be controlled).
The remote controls or the electrical equip-
ment to be used with the Instabus / IR con-
verter must fulfill the following require-
ments:
• Infrared remote controls using the RC5
code.
• IR wavelength: 920...970 nm
• Carrier frequency: 20...70 kHz
The following devices cannot be used:
• Remote controls without carrier frequen-
cy of older design
• IR remote controls with a carrier frequen-
cy of 455 kHz
• Radio remote controls and transmitters
• The old Gira IR system cannot be used eit-
her.

Deleting the IR memory
After the installation and before program-
ming of the IR keys, it is useful to delete the
IR memory beforehand by proceeding as fol-
lows:
1. Withdraw the device from the bus coup-
ler.
2. Turn the adjusting potentiometer at the
rear of the device with a small screwdri-
ver into the 'Reset' position.
3. Plug the device back onto the bus coup-
ler. The IR memory is now deleted and
the IR window now flashes orange.
4. Withdraw the device a second time from
the bus coupler. Turn the potentiometer
back to 'On' and plug the Instabus / IR
converter back onto the bus coupler.
Programming of new IR channels is now
possible.
Selecting the place of installation
The place of installation should be chosen
so as to achieve optimal communication in
operation.
For perfect operation, the Instabus / IR con-
verter needs sight contact with the IR app-
pliances to be controlled (e.g audio equip-
ment) and the IR remote control
transmitting to the Instabus / IR converter.
The place of installation must therefore be
chosen so that
• in operation, the IR remote control can be
easily pointed to the Instabus / IR conver-
ter;
• there are no objects, pieces of furniture,
curtains, etc. impairing the sight contact
between the Instabus / IR converter and
the equipment to be controlled.
The lateral range is optimal within an angle
of 60° (from the median line). Greater ranges
and wider angles can be covered when
transmitter and receiver are arranged in a
straight line. The same applies, when the IR
rays are reflected from walls or furniture in
the room.
The device can be installed at hand range or
also at a height of 2.20 m.
The range is reduced
• outside the boundaries shown,
• when the batteries are weak or dischar-
ged.
