Recommended Use
Warning
To avoid damage to your data, follow these precautions:
* Never congure this unit as a destination for virtual memory.
* Never perform following operations while accessing this unit
• Unplug the USB cable and the power cable
• Turn o your computer
• Put your computer in an energy-saving state (Standby, Hibernate or Sleep)
• Log o, log in or switch user
* In Windows 2000, do not put your computer in standby or hibernation.
This unit does not support standby or hibernate on Windows 2000. If you put the computer in
standby or hibernate mode, the drive’s icon may disappear. If the icon is not displayed, then reboot
your computer.
* A delayed write error may be displayed by some computers when they return from an energy-saving
state. If this happens, detach your drive before putting your computer into an energy-saving mode.
* If the power/access LED does not goes OFF when you turn o your computer, unplug the USB cable
from the drive. Protected encryption modes are not activated until the power/access LED turns o.
* Encryption is disabled by default. To use encryption, you must change to encrypted mode and
congure your password.
* Never forget your password as you will never be able to read data saved on the hard drive once you
forget password after you change to encryption mode.
* Encryption is only supported with Windows PCs. If encryption is enabled, you will not be able to use
the drive with a Macintosh computer. Disable encryption before using this device with Mac OS.
* Please keep your password safe. You will not be able to access the drive in encrypted mode without
the password.
* When rst connected, the drive may take approximately 20 seconds before the power/access LED
comes ON and the unit is ready for use.
* The maximum size of a le on the default FAT32 partition is 4 GB. To use the drive with les larger
than 4 GB, reformat the drive with NTFS or Mac OS extended, which allow larger le sizes.
* If you congure multiple partitions on the drive, format each volume before use.

* Mac OS X may not recognize this device at boot. If this happens, unplug the USB cable, then plug it
again after a few seconds.
* If using Windows 2000, the “new hardware is found” wizard may be displayed during setup. If so, click
[Finish] to close the screen. The message "The software for this device is installed, but your device
may not work properly” is displayed. However, the unit should work properly.
* If your Windows computer will not boot while this drive is connected, then connect the drive to your
computer after rebooting Windows. Also, refer to your computer's manual to change the BIOS setting to
boot from an internal hard drive if you want to turn on or o your computer while this unit is connected.
* This unit supports hot-plug. You can plug or unplug the USB cable while this unit or your PC is ON.
However, NEVER unplug the USB cable while the Power/Access light is ashing, or your data may be lost
or damaged.
* Always refer to the manuals for your computer and peripheral devices.
* You cannot boot an OS from this unit.
* Do not lean any object against this unit.
It may cause the unit to malfunction.
* If you use this unit with Windows Vista or XP on a computer with a USB 1.1 port , you may receive
a message indicating that a high-speed USB hub is connected to a non high-speed USB device. To
continue, click "X".
* You may hear some noise while this unit is working, especially while booting or being accessed. This
is normal.
* On Windows 2000, the message “Warning: Improper Device Removal” will be briey displayed after
you enter the password, but the device is working properly.
* When the driver for this unit is installed, devices are added to Device Manager(*).
To display Device Manager, follow the instruction below:
On Windows Vista..................................Click "Start", right click "Computer", and click "Manage". When "A program
needs your permission to continue" is displayed, click "Continue" and click
"Device Manager".
Windows XP.............................................Click "Start" and right click "My Computer".
Click "Manage" and then "Device Manager".
Windows 2000 ........................................Right-click "My Computer", click "Manage" and then "Device Manager".

Locking the drive
In Encryption mode, your hard drive is locked during the following events. Depending on your OS, you
may experience slightly dierent behavior. Use Secure Lock Manager Easy software to lock the drive.

* Logging o of switching users does not lock the drive.
* If you use Windows 2000, do not put your computer into standby or hibernation. If you do, the
drive icon may no longer be displayed. Reboot your computer to restore the icon.
* Encryption is not supported for Mac OS.

Forgot your password?
If you forget your password for this product, follow the procedure below to reset the
unit back to the factory default settings.
Note: A Windows computer is required to reset this drive. The Secure Lock Manager
Easy software does not support Mac OS.
Reset to factory defaults
Note: After resetting to factory defaults, the drive be formatted in FAT 32 and all data in it will be
erased. If you want to be able to save les larger than 4 GB, format the hard drive in NTFS
or Mac OS extended after resetting to factory defaults.
1Connect this unit to your Windows PC.
If the password verication screen is displayed, close it.
The autoplay screen may be displayed if you are using Windows Vista. If so, close it.
2Click [Start] - [(All) Programs] - [BUFFALO] - [Secure Lock Manager Easy] - [Secure Lock
Manager Easy].
Secure Lock Manager Easy will launch.
3Click “Reset to the factory defaults”.

Follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
All data saved on the hard drive will be erased! You will not be able to undo this.
After a reset, all data on the drive will be lost.
6When "The hard disk status is now reset to the factory defaults." is displayed, click “OK”.
The reset is now complete. Wait until the hard drive is recognized. If it is not recognized, unplug the hard
drive and reconnect it.
Click “Resetting to the factory defaults“.
Click “Next”.

Software
The DriveStation includes several optional software packages.
Installing software on a Windows PC
1Connect the DriveStation to your computer.
2Right-click on "Utility_HD-CXU2 ( ) in My Computer, and select "Open".
3Double click on "DriveNavi.exe"( ).
DriveNavigator wizard will launch.
* if “A program needs your permission to continue” is displayed by Windows Vista, click “Continue”.
4Click “Begin Installation”.
5Click "Additional Software Installation".
* To install Picasa, click "Picasa Installation".
6Select the target software and click "Install".
The wizard will guide you through installation.

Installing software on a Mac
1Connect the DriveStation to your computer.
2Navigate to the "Mac" directory in the DriveStation and select the target software
icon.
Optional Software
Secure Lock Manager Easy (Windows 2000/XP/Vista)
This software controls the DriveStation's encryption features. Use it to enable encryption, set the
password, congure auto-authentication, etc. Encryption is not enabled by default.
TurboUSB (Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Mac OS X 10.4 or later)
The TurboUSB utility improves data transfer speeds for your DriveStation.
eco Manager (Windows 2000/XP/Vista)
eco Manager for HD lets you put the DriveStation into Sleep mode to save power.
Picasa (Windows Vista/XP)
Picasa organizes and edits digiral photos.
Note: An Internet connection is required to share digital photos or send photos via e-mail.
Memeo AutoBackup (Windows 2000/XP/Vista)
This software is available for backing up documents, multimedia les, and other les from your Windows
PC to the DriveStation. A license for using Memeo on a single PC or workstation is included with your
DriveStation.
Memeo LifeAgent (Mac OS X 10.4 or later)
This software is available for backing up documents, multimedia les, and other les from your OS X Mac
to the DriveStation. A license for using Memeo on a single Mac is included with your DriveStation.
