INTRODUCTION
Thank you for choosing this Bur ey product. A of our products carry a CE mark which is awarded
by an independent test house (notified body) and shows the fires have been type tested to meet
the essentia requirements of the European Gas App iance Directive and the appropriate British
Standards.
This is a high y efficient F ue ess Live Fue Effect App iance. The burner system is very c ean
burning and a cata yst c eans the combustion products even further.
An oxygen dep etion sensing pi ot ight is a so fitted and wi sense any significant oxygen
dep etion in the room and shut the fire down safe y.

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
2.1 Gas app iances must be insta ed in accordance with the ru es in force. In the UK it is the
aw that a gas app iances must be insta ed by a Gas Safe™ registered insta er (former y
CORGI), in accordance with the Gas Safety (Insta ation and Use) regu ations (as
amended). The insta ation must a so be in accordance with the re evant parts of oca and
nationa bui ding regu ations and in accordance with BS5871 pt4 except where Bur ey
instruction state different y. For the Repub ic of Ire and, reference shou d be made to
IS813 and ICP3 and any guidance notes from Bord Gais. Fai ure to have the fire fitted by a
qua ified person nu ifies ALL guarantees. In the event of gas eakage, the fire must be
turned off at the nearest iso ating va ve.
2.2 The space to be heated must have a wa vent of at east 100cm² of venti ation and an
open ab e window or patio door. The vent must be positioned at east 1 metre away from
the app iance.
2.3 In the Repub ic of Ire and two vents of not ess than 60cm² each, one not ess than 1.6m
above the other, must be insta ed in the room.
2.4 When providing venti ator openings consideration must be given to the avoidance of
ocations where discomfort from draughts may cause the user to b ock the openings.
Simi ar y the possibi ity of curtains or furniture b ocking venti ation openings must be
considered. Floor vents, closable window vents or chimneys are not suitable means o
ventilation.
2.5 Working surfaces inc ude the air out et gri e.
2.6 The heater must not be used in a room of ess than 30m³ in vo ume. Adjoining spaces, not
separated by a door may be inc uded. To convert cubic feet (ft³) to cubic metre (m³)
divide the room vo ume in cubic feet by 35.3.
2.7 Soft furnishings, decorations and wa coverings etc. must not be p aced within 1 metre of
the app iance and its convection out ets (see 5.0). Be aware of curtains etc which cou d be
b own towards the app iance.
2.8 The heater is intended as a secondary heat source. Check that a primary source of heat
(such as radiators) is present in the room. If insufficient primary heat is being used there
may be a bui d-up of condensation, if this is the case, p ease warn the customer of this.
2.9 The heater must not be used in rooms where the atmosphere is ike y to contain water or
chemica vapours which may adverse y affect the app iance or its finish.
2.10 Do not use whi st painting & decorating, or in new y decorated rooms as the residues can
ead to unp easant sme s from the app iance. A ways cover or have the app iance
removed when decorating. (See points to note on page 14)
2.11 Cand es too c ose to the fire may me t. Scented cand es must be at east 1 metre away
from the app iance.
2.12 Air freshener residues can enter the app iance and ead to residua odours, especia y the
p ug in type.
2.13 The cata yst is not an air c eaner and presence of odours is un ike y to be cata yst fai ure.
2.14 Houses with warm air heating systems, so id wa s, or no damp proof course may be
unsuitab e for F ue ess app iances.
2.15 This heater does not contain asbestos.
2.16 The oxy pi ot can become b ocked by fibres from new carpets and pet hairs advise the
customer to vacuum around the pi ot on a regu ar basis to prevent b ockage to pi ot unit.

3. CLEARANCES TO COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS AND SHELVES
3.1 A non-combustib e she f with projection ess than 100mm may be fitted to within 500mm of
the top edge of the fire frame. Note that she ves wi get hot and de icate ornaments, wax
cand es etc shou d be kept away from hot surfaces. No combustib e she ves shou d be fitted
for at east 1 metre above the app iance and a simi ar c earance shou d be maintained to
cei ings.
3.2 As with a heaters the possibi ity of convection staining on surfaces in the vicinity of the
heater sha be considered and the user advised. Particu ar attention shou d be taken to
ensure soft furnishings such as scatter rugs and curtains are kept at east 1 metre from the
app iance.
3.3 On shou d the air in et and/or out et gri es be covered or b ocked in any way as this cou d
ead to a hazard.
3.4 On no account should glass mirrors or picture rames or any electrical equipment e.g.
plasma screen TV’s be itted or positioned on the wall above the appliance as the heat
rising could damage them.
3.5 The user shall be advised when relevant that hot convection air rom the grille outlet
induces the possibility o staining on sur aces in the vicinity o the appliance. This can be
caused by the e ect o heat on the inish and also burned dust & tobacco particles etc.

ensure so t urnishings such as so t cushions and curtains are kept at least 1 meter rom the
appliance. Blown vinyl and lock and embossed wallpapers can be scorch damaged by being
too close to a heat source and may discolour over a period o time.

4. REMOVING AND REFITTING GLASS & DECORATIVE TRIM
4.1 To remove the g ass, remove the decorative trim and then the 4 screws in the side frames
and pivoting it out from the bottom then remove g ass from its top channe . Refitting is done
in reverse order.
4.2 Note: the glass is a unctional part o the appliance and it must not be operated without the
glass correctly itted.

5. OPTIONAL FUEL LAYOUT
A bag of oose chippings is supp ied for fitting in the app iance, if desired they can be
distributed in the chippings trays to the front and rear of the burner out et. Chippings
shou d be even y distributed and it is very important that on no account shou d the
chippings obstruct the burner out et, f ame paths or pi ot burner. A ways rep ace the g ass
after aying the chippings. Do not attempt to use the unit with broken / damaged glass

5. TO LIGHT THE HEATER
BURLEY APPLIANCES IS THE ONLY COMPANY TO BENCH RUN AND THOROUGHLY TEST
EVERY SINGLE GAS FIRE IT PRODUCES. BURLEY IS IN THE UNIQUE POSITION OF
KNOWING THAT EVERY APPLIANCE LEAVES THE FACTORY IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER.
6.1 To ight the fire, first ensure the contro knob is turned c ockwise to OFF. (Figure 2) Press
the contro knob for severa seconds then turn s ow y antic ockwise to the ignition
position (spark). A c ick wi be heard and the pi ot (to the rear of the burner) shou d
ight. If it does not, repeat the operation a few times to purge any air in the pipe.
Continue to ho d knob for 15 – 20 second to estab ish the pi ot and then re ease. If pi ot
fai s to estab ish, turn off, wait 1 minute then repeat ighting procedure. Rotate the knob
to high f ame to ight then back to the desired f ame position.
6.2 Contro the fire by the f ame setting to suit your mode of use
6.3 To turn the fire off, rotate the knob fu y c ockwise back to a vertica position.
6.4 SPARK FAILURE The gap between the pi ot e ectrode and the pi ot shou d be 3.5 –
4.5mm and norma y adjustment is not necessary (the e ectrode is very britt e). The
spark shou d jump across the gap between the e ectrode and the gas out et on the
pi ot head.
6.5 DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF THE OXY PILOT, IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR THE
PILOT TO EXTINGUISH UP TO/AFTER 1 MINUTE WHEN FIRST LIT. RELIGHT AND THE
PILOT WILL STAY ALIGHT. THIS IS DUE TO THE MOIST GASES FORMED BY THE PILOT
DROPPING DOWN AND SNUFFING IT. IT IS SAFE TO LEAVE THE PILOT ON 24 HOURS
A DAY TO MAKE LIGHTING EASIER.
6.6 Oxygen Dep etion Pi ot System There is a high y sensitive oxygen dep etion sensor
designed into the pi ot ight and may not ight first time or may extinguish after a few
minutes, p ease advise the customer of this. If any part of the OXY Pi ot is damaged
the entire unit must be rep aced. Do not attempt to bend or a ter the f ame head,
thermocoup e or aeration ho e. Use on y genuine spare parts as simi ar ooking parts
from other app iances may we give different or inferior performance and cou d ead
to a hazard.
6.7 Fireguards A fireguard is not supp ied with this app iance and being wa mounted, the
need for one wi have to be assessed depending on the position, height from ground
etc of the fire; however it is recommended that a fireguard to BS8423 is fitted if the
fire is to be used in the presence of young chi dren, the e der y and the infirm.
6.8 Completion o Warranty Card. The installer section o the guarantee card must be
illed in ully to validate the warranty. I.e. pressure, model, room size and Gas
Sa e™ registered installer ( ormerly CORGI) Number
6. SERVICING
As with all gas appliances the unit must be serviced at least once per year, pre erably at
the beginning o the heating season. All servicing must be carried out by a quali ied
service person. See installation instructions or details.

descriptions and illustrations can not be guaranteed.

7. Points to Note!
• If the customer smokes tobacco products, ives near a busy road or is cooking with a gas
oven/hob at the time of testing you must ensure that an ambient CO reading is taken
before ighting the fire and attempting a reading.
• Does the catalytic convertor need replacing? The cata ytic convertor does not need
rep acing un ess it has become physica y broken or the combustion test shows
deterioration in performance over time. To constant y test the performance of the
cata ytic converter, our aboratory has been running app iances eight hours per day, five
days per week, for up to seven years. Periodica y we send cata ytic converters back to the
manufacturer for testing. After the equiva ent of 30 years of use, the cata ytic converter is
as efficient as it was when brand new. Bur ey manages to achieve this by designing the
fire to ensure that the cata ytic converter is in exact y the right position for ong ife and
maximum efficiency. (For other makes of fire p ease consu t the re evant manufacturer).

• If you or the customer detects any odours from the fire p ease remember that the
cata ytic convertor is not an air fi ter and does not remove sme s. Any ceramics in the fire
can absorb househo d sme s and in turn these sme s get emitted when the fire is it,
especia y if the fire is used in an enc osed space for a period of time. If this is the case we
recommend that the fire is run on maximum for at east 5 hours with the doors and
windows open. This shou d be done at east twice a year, preferab y in the spring and
autumn or at any time they notice a sme .
• We do not advise the burning of wax cand es within 1 metre of the fire. Wax partic es can
become airborne and deposit and so idify in the fire causing potentia combustion
prob ems.
• The cata yst can a so be affected by airborne paint sme s and vapors from some p ug in
air fresheners. The fire must be removed or sea ed if you p an to decorate anywhere in
the house. If you can detect sme s from the fire carry out the burning off procedure as
above.

8. Burley Appliances Ltd - Domestic Guarantee Conditions?
We pride ourse ves on the qua ity of service we de iver to our customers and a Bur ey
App iances’ products carry a fu y inc usive 12-month parts and abour guarantee. This guarantee
is extended by another 12 months free of charge provided that your app iance is registered with
us within two weeks of insta ation and that it is serviced by a Gas Safe ™ registered insta er
(former y CORGI) at the end of the first year. What the guarantee cannot cover is prob ems
caused by incorrect insta ation or servicing, or any work carried out by non- Gas Safe™ registered
insta er (former y CORGI).
We undertake that if within 12 months of the date of purchase, your fire or any part thereof is
proved to be defective by reason of fau ty workmanship or materia s, we wi at our discretion
repair or rep ace the same free of any charge for abour, materia s or carriage subject to
condition that:
• A gas app iances are insta ed to the atest Gas Insta ation regu ations by a qua ified Gas
Safe™ registered insta er (former y CORGI) and connected to the correct gas type and
pressure as stated on the rating p ate
• The fire is fitted in a room with the fo owing minimum dimensions 2.5Kw = 30m

• You have the fire serviced by a Gas Safe™ registered insta er (former y CORGI) within the

• The app iance has not been subject to misuse, accident, or repaired or fitted by anyone
other than a Gas Safe ™ registered insta er (former y CORGI) or our own engineer.
• The app iance has been used so e y for domestic purposes and is on domestic premises
i.e. not for commercia or trade use.
• The app iance has been used so e y in accordance with the instruction book.
Any in guarantee work carried out by Bur ey App iances wi be charged for if the fau t is caused
by incorrect pressure or gas, incorrect insta ation, operator error, neg ect or abuse.
All guarantee cover is instantly and permanently cancelled i a non- Gas Sa e ™ registered
installer ( ormerly CORGI) carries out any installation or servicing.
Exclusions
This guarantee does not cover:
• Damage resu ting from externa transportation, improper use or neg ect, the rep acement
of any ight bu bs or removab e parts of g ass or p astic.
• Costs incurred for ca s to put right an app iance, which is improper y insta ed.
• App iances that are the subject of renta agreements.
• EC Countries - the standard guarantee is app icab e but is subject to the owner's
responsibi ity and cost, to ensure the app iance meets the standards set by the country to
which the product is taken.
Any appliance or de ective part replaced shall become the Company's property
Service Calls are made between 09.30 am and 04.30 pm Monday - Friday.
This guarantee is in addition to your statutory and other legal rights.
