1. Block drivewheels before use. Set parking brake and put gearselector in neutral for manual transmission
or park forautomatic transmission. Risk of sudden vehicle
movement!
2. Read vehicle'sservice manual before use.
3. Keep awayfrom hot or moving engine parts.
4. Use withgasoline engines only. Do notexceed gauge range.
5. Secure connectionsbefore use.
6. Inspect beforeevery use; do not use if parts loose ordamaged.
7. WearANSI-approved safety gogglesduring use.
8. Use theTesteronly in well-ventilated areas. Arunning gasoline engineproduces carbon monoxide.Carbon
monoxide is acolorless, odorless, gas that can cause
serious injury ordeath.
9. Maintain labelsand nameplates on the Compression Tester. Thesecarry important information. If
unreadable or missing,contact Harbor Freight Tools
for a replacement.
10. The brasscomponents of thisproduct contain lead, a chemical known to the Stateof California to cause

11. Peoplewith pacemakers shouldconsult their physician(s) before using this product. Electromagnetic
fields in closeproximity to a heart pacemaker could cause interference orfailure of the pacemaker.
In addition, peoplewith pacemakers should adhere to the following: Caution isnecessary when near the coil,
spark plug cables,or distributor of a running engine. The engine shouldalways be offif adjustments areto be
made to thedistributor.

3. INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: Performing a compressiontest requires the work of twoindividuals; one person to operate the
vehicle's ignition switchwhile the other person operates theCompression Tester.
1. Prepare theengine for compression testing by startingthe engine and allowing it towarm up to its normal
operating temperature. Then,switch off theignition. WARNING! Aviod carbon monoxide poisoning!
Never run agasoline engine in an enclose garageor other contained area.
2. Once theengine has been turned off, disconnectboth coil wiresfrom the coil of the engine.Insulate coil
wires or routethem away from each other andall metal surfaces.
3. Remove allof the spark plugs. Make noteof which spark plug wires goto each spark plug locations.
4. Attacheither the Adapter Fitting orHose and Hose Fitting to theGauge.
5. Connect theCompression Tester to thefirst cylinder of the engine. With the gas pedal pressed all the way
down, crank theengine for at least eight revolutions.
6. While crankingthe engine, observe the Gauge. Recordthe maximum reading.
7. Afterrecording the maximum reading, stop crankingthe engine. Then,release the air pressure in theGauge
by pressing theAir Release Button.
8. Remove theCompression Tester from thefirst engine cylinder. Then repeatSteps #5, #6,and #7for the
remaining engine cylinders.
NOTE: Good engine cylindercompression will be indicated with ahigh initial reading, and a progressive
build-up to thefinal maximum reading. Poor engine cylindercompression will be indicated with alow initial
reading, and amuch slower build-up to the finalmaximum reading. Thecompression readings for all of the
engine cylinders shouldnot vary by more than 10%.Check service manual for acceptable pressureranges.
