Thank you for purchasing aCanon USM lens.
The Canon EF-S17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens
is acompact and lightweight standard zoom
lens developed for EOS cameras* compatible
with EF-S lenses.
It
is equipped with an Image Stabilizer
effective for hand-held shooting at slow
shutter speeds.
$"IS" stands for Image Stabilizer.
$"USM" stands for Ultrasonic Motor.
Features
1. Aspheric lens element for excellent imaging
performance.
2. The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent
effect of ashutter speed three stops faster.
3. USM for fast, quiet focusing.
4. Great close-ups at 0.35 m/1.2 ft at all focal
lengths.
5. Manual focusing available in autofocusing
mode (ONE SHOT AF).
6. Atruly round aperture hole results in anicer
background blur.

Lt. Safety Precautions
1. Do not look at the sun or a bright light source
through the lens or camera. Doing so could
result
in loss of vision. Looking at the sun directly
through the lens is especially hazardous.
2. Whether it is attached to the camera or not, do
not leave the lens under the sun without the
lens cap attached. This
is to prevent the lens
from concentrating the sun's rays, which could
cause a
fi re.
Lt.Handling Cautions
If the lens is taken from acold environment into
awarm one, condensation may develop on the
lens surface and internal parts. To prevent
condensation
in this case, first put the lens into an
airtight plastic bag before taking it from acold to
warm environment. Then take out the lens after it
has warmed gradually.
Do the same when taking the
lens from awarm environment into acold one.

operation of the equipment.
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the
limits for aclass Bdigital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC

See your camera's instructions for details on
mounting and detaching the lens.

cap. To attach it properly, align the lens mount

and the 0index of the dust cap as shown
in the diagram, and turn clockwise. To remove
it, reverse the order.

To shoot in autofocus mode, set the focus mode
switch to AF.
To use only manual focusing, set the focus mode
switch to MF, and focus by turning the focusing
ring. The focusing ring always works, regardless
of the focus mode.

The lens can focus as close as 0.35 m/1.2 ft for
close-ups (macro photography).
o Close-up Photography (Macro Photography)
[]] To focus at 0.35 m/1.2 ft, set the lens focus mode
switch to
MF. Look through the viewfinder and
move your body forward or back to focus. Take
the shot when the subject
is in focus.
To zoom, turn the lens' zoom ring.
Osesureto·finishzooming before focusing.
Changingthezoomringafter focusing can affect
the focus.

You can use the image stabilizer in AF or MF mode.

Image Stabilizer
o@The Image Stabilizer cannot compensate for a
blurred shot caused by asubject that moved.
@Set the STABILIZER switch toOFFwhen you
are taking pictures using the Bulb setting (long
exposures). If the STABILIZER switch is set
to0 N ,'the image stabilizer function may
introduce errors.
@The Image Stabilizer might not be fully effective
in the following cases:
•You move the camera for apanned shot.
•You shoot while riding
on abumpy road.
®Compared to using anormal non-IS lens, fewer
shots can be taken when you use an Image
Stabilizer lens because more power is
consumed.
@The image stabilizer operates for about two
seconds even when your finger is off the shutter
button. Do not remove the lens while the
stabilizer is
in operation. This will cause a
malfunction.

LiJ @When you use atripod, the Image Stabilizer
should be turned off to save battery power.
®The stabilizer is equally effective for hand-held
photography and photography with amonopod.
®The image stabilizer function also operates
when the lens is used with an Extension Tube
EF12
II or EF25 II.
@If you set the camera's Custom Function to
change the assigned button to operate the AF,
the Image Stabilizer will operate when you press
the newly assigned AF button.

,Infinity Distance Mark
To compensate for shifting of the infinity focus
point that results from changes
in temperature.
The infinity position at normal temperature
is the
point at which the vertical line of the Lmark
is
aligned with the distance indicator on the
distance scale.
oForaccurate manual focusing on subjects at
infinity distance,.Iook through the viewfinder while
rotating the focusing ring.
Filters (Sold Separately)
You can attach filters to the filter mounting
thread
on the front of the lens.

The EW-73B hood can keep unwanted light out of the lens, and also protects the lens from rain,
snow, and dust.

To attach the hood, align the hood's attachment position mark with the red dot on the front of the
lens, then turn the hood clockwise until the lens's
red dot is aligned with the hood's stop position
mark.
The hood can be reverse-mounted
on the lens for storage.

Canon LIMITED WARRANTY
The Limited Warranty set forth below is given by Canon U.S.A., Inc. in the United States and Canon Canada, Inc. in Canada (herein referred to collectively as "Canon") with respect to the
Canon Binoculars and Photographic Lens Products packaged with this Limited Warranty and identified by model number on this Limited Warranty Card (each a"Product") when purchased and
used in the United States
or Canada.
This Limited Warranty is only effective upon presentation of this warranty card and proof of purchase.
AProduct, when delivered to you
in new condition in its original container, is warranted against defects in materials or workmanship as follows: for aperiod of one (1) yearfrom the date of
original purchase, defective parts
or adefective Product returned to Canon or its authorized service providers, and proven to be defective upon inspection, will be repaired with new or
comparable rebuilt parts or exchanged for arefurbished Product, as determined by Canon
or the authorized service provider, in their sole discretion. Replaced parts and exchanged Products
will become the property of Canon.
When returning aProduct for warranty service, the shipping charges must be prepaid and the Product should be shipped
in its original container, or an equivalent, properly packed to withstand
the hazards of shipment and be fully insured. Acopy of this warranty card and proof of purchase should be enclosed, as well as a description of the problem (including film samples, where
appropriate). Repairs will be made and the Product will be returned, shipped at NO CHARGE, within the country of repair.
This warranty only covers defective materials
or workmanship encountered in normal use and service of aProduct and does not apply in the follOWing cases:
(a) Loss
or damage due to neglect and/or abuse causing deterioration, mishandling, accident or failure to follow operating instructions.
(b) If aProduct is defective as a result of leaking batteries or damage due to water or other liquid.
(c) Defective materials
or workmanship where the defect is due to aProduct having been serviced or modified by other than Canon or aCanon authorized service provider.
(d) Malfunction resulting from the use of accessories, attachments, supplies, parts or devices (including, without limitation, batteries, film, flash attachments and other accessories) that do not
conform to Canon specifications.
(e) Damage resulting during shipment. (Claim must be presented and examined by the shipper).
(f) Damage
or service resulting from modifications or alterations to aProduct in any way (including any alteration or removal of its serial number or identification marks).

OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR APARTICULAR PURPOSE, APPLIES TO APRODUCT AFTER THE
