The Canon EF-S18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is
ahigh-performance high-magnification zoom
lens equipped with
an Image Stabilizer, and
has been developed for digital SLRs
compatible with EF-S lenses*.
*As of August 2008, only the EOS 400, EOS 300,
EOS
200, EOS 20Da, EOS DIGITAL REBEL
XS/1000D, EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi/450D, EOS
DIGITAL REBEL XTil400D DIGITAL,
EOS
DIGITAL REBEL XT/350D DIGITAL, and EOS
DIGITAL REBEU300D DIGITAL are compatible
with EF-S lenses.

Conventions used in this instruction
Warning to prevent lens or camera
malfunction or damage.
Features
1. The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent
effect of ashutter speed four stops faster*.
This function provides optimal image
stabilization depending
on shooting conditions
(such as shooting still subjects and following
shots).
2. Aspherical and UD lens elements result in
outstanding image delineation.
3. The zoom ring can be fixed to keep the lens
at the shortest point.
4. Atruly round aperture hole results in anicer
background blur.
*Based on [1/(focallength x1.6)] second. Generally,
it requires ashutter speed [1/focal length] second or
faster to prevent camera shake
(in 35mm format.
With
an EF-S lens, it would be [1/(focal length x
1.6)] second).

6Safety Precautions
1. Do not look at the sun or abright light source
through the lens or camera. Doing
so could
result
in loss of vision. Looking at the sun directly
through the lens is especially hazardous.
2. Whether it is attached to the camera or not, do
not leave the lens under the sun without the
lens cap attached. This
is to prevent the lens
from concentrating the sun's rays, which could
cause afire.
6Handling Cautions
If the lens is taken from acold environment into
awarm one, condensation may develop
on the
lens surface and internal parts. To prevent
condensation
in this case, first put the lens into an
airtight plastic bag before taking it from acold to
warm environment. Then take out the lens after it
has warmed gradually.
Do the same when taking the
lens from awarm environment into acold one.
This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is
subject to the following two conditions: (1) This device may not
cause harmful interference, and (2) this device must accept any
interference received, including interference that may cause
undesired operation.
Do not make any changes or modifications to the equipment
unless otherwise specified in the instructions. If such changes or
modifications should be made, you could be required to stop
operation of the equipment.
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the
limits for aclass Bdigital device, pursuant to part 15 of the FCC
Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection
against harmful interference in aresidential installation. This
equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the
instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio
communications.
However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in
aparticular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful
interference to radio or television reception, which can be
determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is
encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of

•Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.
•Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.

To shoot in autofocus (AF) mode, set the focus
mode switch to
AF.
To use only manual focusing (MF), set the focus
mode switch to MF, and focus by turning the
focusing ring.
o *» Do not touch the rotating parts of the lens while
autofocus is active.
*» Do not adjust focus manually when the focus
mode switch is set to AF.
@After detaching the lens, place the lens with the
rear end up to prevent the lens surface and
electrical contacts from getting scratched.
@ If the contacts get soiled, scratched, or have
fingerprints
on them, corrosion or faulty
connections can result. The camera and lens
may not operate properly.
@If the contacts get soiled or have fingerprints on
them, clean them with asoft cloth.
@If you remove the lens, cover it with the dust
cap. To attach it properly, align the lens mount
index and the 0index of the dust cap as shown
in the diagram, and turn clockwise. To remove
it, reverse the order.
See your camera's instructions for details on
mounting and detaching the lens.

oHood (Sold Separately)
The EW-78D hood can keep unwanted light out
of the lens, and also protects the lens from rain,
snow, and dust.
To attach the hood, align the hood's attachment
position mark with the
red dot on the front of the
lens, then turn the hood as shown by the arrow
until the lens'
red dot is aligned with the hood's
stop position mark.
The hood can
be reverse-mounted on the lens
for storage.
o.¢' Part of the picture may be blocked if the hood is
not attached properly.
¢' When attaching or detaching the hood, grasp
the base of the hood to turn
it. To prevent
deformation, do not grasp the
rim of the hood to
turn
it.

To zoom, turn the lens' zoom ring.
o Be sure to finish zooming before focusing.
Changing the zoom ring after focusing can affect
the focus.

oFixing the Zoom Ring

The zoom ring can be fixed to keep the lens at the shortest point. This function is convenient for
carrying acamera on astrap because
it prevents the lens from extending.
oThe zoom ring can only be locked at maximum wide angle.

You can use the image stabilizer in AF or MF
mode.
This function provides optimal image stabilization
depending
on shooting conditions (such as
shooting still subjects and following shots).

®The Image Stabilizer may not be fUlly effective if
you shoot from aviolently shaking vehicle or
other transportation.
$The Image Stabilizer consumes more power
than normal shooting, so fewer shots can

taken if you use the function.

*' When you use atripod, the Image Stabilizer
should be turned off to save battery power.
@The stabilizer is equally effective for hand-held
photography and photography with amonopod.

when the lens is used with an Extension Tube

II or EF25 II.
@If you set the camera's Custom Function to
change the assigned button to operate the
AF,
the Image Stabilizer will operate when you press
the newly assigned AF button.

Image Stabilizer
The image stabilizer
in this lens is effective for hand-held shots under the following
conditions.
@; In semi-darkened areas such as indoors or @; When panning subjects in motion.
outdoors at night.
~ In locations where flash photography is
prohibited, such as art museums and theater
stages.
$I In situations where your footing is uncertain.
®: In situations where fast shutter settings cannot
be used.

You can attach filters to the filter mounting

on the front of the lens.

f} If you need apolarizing filter, use the Canon
Circular Polarizing Filter (72mm).
f} To adjust the polarizing filter, first remove the
lens hood.

fhe Limited Warranty set forth below is given by Canon U.S.A., Inc. in the United States and Canon Canada, Inc. in Canada (herein referred to collectively as "Canon") with respect to the
Canon Binoculars and Photographic Lens Products packaged with this Limited Warranty and identified by model number
on this Limited Warranty Card (each a"Producf') when purchased and
used in the United States or Canada.
This Limited Warranty is only effective upon presentation of this warranty card and proof of purchase.
AProduct, when delivered to you in new condition in its original container, is warranted against defects in materials
or workmanship as follows: for aperiod of one (1) year from the date of
original purchase, defective parts
or adefective Product returned to Canon or its authorized service providers, and proven to be defective upon inspection, will be repaired with new or
comparable rebuill parts or exchanged for arefurbished Product, as determined by Canon or the authonzed service provider, in their sole discretion. Replaced parts and exchanged Products
will become the property of Canon.
When returning aProduct for warranty service, the shipping charges must be prepaid and the Product should be shipped
In its original container, or an equivalent, properly packed to Withstand
the hazards of shipment and be fully insured. Acopy of this warranty card and proof of purchase should be enclosed, as well
as adescription of the problem (including film samples, where
appropriate). Repairs will be made and the Product will be returned, shipped at
NO CHARGE, within the country of repair.
This warranty only covers defective materials
or workmanship encountered in normal use and service of aProduct and does not apply in the follOWing cases:
(a) Loss
or damage due to neglect and/or abuse causing deterioration, mishandling, accident or failure to follow operating instructions.
(b) If aProduct is defective as aresull of leaking baffenes
or damage due to water or other liqUid.
(c) Defective materials
or workmanship where the defect is due to aProduct having been serviced or modified by other than Canon or aCanon authorized service provider.
(d) Malfunction resulting from the use of accessories, affachments, supplies, parts
or devices (including, without limitation, bafferies, film, flash affachments and other accessories) that do not
conform to Canon specifications.
(e) Damage resulting during shipment. (Claim must be presented and examined by the shipper).
(I) Damage or service resulting from modifications or alterations to aProduct in any way (including any aiteratlon or removal of its serial number or identification marks).
