Thank you for purchasing aCanon USM'lens.
The Canon EF17 ~40mm f/4L USM is ahigh-
performance wide-angle zoom lens.
"USM" stands for Ultrasonic Motor.
Features
1. Two aspherical elements and aSuper UD
element result in sharp pictures and
outstanding image delineation.
2. Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for silent and high-
speed
AF operation.
3. Manual focusing enabled even in the
AF mode.
4. Circular diaphragm for better background blur.
5. Sealed construction for higher dust- and water-
resistance compared to previous lenses. (For
maximum protection, afilter must also be
attached to the front
of the lens.)
~ Handling Cautions
If the lens is taken from acold environment into a
warm
one, condensation may develop on the lens
surface
and internal parts. To prevent condensation in
this case, lirst put the lens into an airtight plastic bag
before taking it from acold to warm environment.
Then take out the lens after it has warmed gradually.
Do the same when taking the.Iens from awarm
environment into acold one.
Although the lens
is dust- and water-resistant, afilter
must also
be attached to the front of the lens for
complete protection. (The front of the lens moves
during zooming.)

See your camera's instructions for instructions on
mounting and detaching the lens.
•After detaching the lens, attach the dust cap to
the rear of the lens to prevent the contacts and
lens from getting scratched.
•If the contacts are dirty, scratched, or soiled with
fingerprints, etc., corrosion
ora faulty
connection or operation may result.
•Always attach the
dust cap to the lens when the
lens is not mounted on the camera.
To attach
the dust cap, align the mark on the dust cap
with the mark on the lens and turn the dust cap
clockwise.
To remove the dust cap, turn it
counter-clockwise.

oThe lens mount has arubber ring for enhanced
water- and dust-resistance. The rubber ring may
cause slight abrasions around the camera's lens
mount, but this will not cause any problems. If the
rubber ring becomes worn, it is replaceable by a
Canon Service Center
at cost.

To shoot in autofocus mode, set the focus mode
switch to AF.
To use only manual focusing, set the focus mode
switch to MF , and focus by turning the focusing
ring.
The manual focus ring always works, regardless
of the focus mode.
•After autofocusing in ONE SHOT AF mode, focus
manually by pressing the shutter button halfway and
turning the focusing ring.

To zoom, turn the zoom ring.

4) •Be sure to finish zooming before focusing.
Changing the zoom ring after focusing can affect
the focus.
•This lens can partially obstruct the light from the
built-in flash units.
To avoid this, use an external
flash.

To compensate for shifting of the infinity focus
point that results from changes
in temperature,
you can rotate the distance scale slightly past
the normal infinity focus mark.
•The infinity position at normal temperature is the point
at which the vertical line of the
L- mark is aligned
with the distance indicator on the distance scale.
•For accurate manual focusing
on subjects at infinity
distance, look through the viewfinder while rotating the
focusing ring.

The infrared index corrects the focus setting when using
monochrome infrared film. Focus on the subject
manually, then adjust the distance setting by moving the
focusing ring to the corresponding infrared index mark.
• The compensation amount differs depending on the
focal length. Use the indicated focal length as a
guide when setting the compensation amount.
oSome EOS cameras cannot use infrared film. See
the instructions for your EOS camera.
[l] •The infrared index position is based on a
wavelength of 800 nm.
•Be sure to observe the manufacturer's
instructions when using infrared film.
•Use ared filter also when you take the picture.
The EW-83E hood can keep unwanted light out of the
lens, and also protects the front of the lens from rain,
snow, and dust.
To attach the hood, align the hood's attachment
position mark with the red dot on the front of the lens,
then turn the hood clockwise until the lens's red dot is
aligned with the hood's stop position mark.
The hood can be reverse-mounted on the lens for storage.
o ·Part of the picture may be blocked if the hood is
not attached properly.
•
To attach (remove) the hood, grasp the base of
the hood and turn it clockwise
(counterclockwise). Do not hold the hood by the
outer rim as this could result
in the hood being
distorted if too much pressure is applied.

You can attach filters to the filter mounting thread
on the front of the lens.
•If you need apolarizing filter, use Canon's 77 mm
PL-CII polarizing filter.
[ll Only one filter may be attached.

There is agelatin filter holder at the rear of the
lens. Cut the gelatin filter to fit within the white
frames. Then insert the gelatin filter into the filter
holder.
oWhen you use agelatin filter, ghosting or flare
spots may appear
in the image.

Call 011 LIMITED WARRANTY
The Limited Warranty set forth below is given by Canon U.S.A., Inc. in the United States and Canon Canada, Inc. in Canada (herein referred to collectively as "Canon") with respect to the
Canon Binoculars and Photographic Lens Products packaged with this Limited Warranty and identified by model number on this Limited Warranty Card (each a"Producf') when purchased and
used in the United States
or Canada.
This Limited Warranty is only effective upon presentation of this warranty card and proof of purchase.
AProduct, when delivered to you in new condition in its original container, is warranted against defects in materials
or workmanship as follows: for aperiod of one (1) year from the date of
original purchase, defective parts
or adefective Product returned to Canon or its authorized service providers, and prover) to be defective upon inspection, will be repaired with new or
comparable rebuilt parts or exchanged for arefurbished Product, as determined by Canon or the authorized service provider, in their sole discretion. Replaced parts and exchanged Products
will become the property of Canon.
When returning aProduct for warranty service, the shipping charges must be prepaid and the Product should be shipped in its original container,
or an equivalent, properly packed to withstand
the hazards of shipment and be fully insured. Acopy of this warranty card and proof of purchase should be enclosed, as well as adescription
of the problem (including film samples, where
appropriate). Repairs will be made and the Product will be returned, shipped at NO CHARGE, within the country of repair.
This warranty only covers defective materials
or workmanship encountered in normal use and service of aProduct and does not apply in the'following cases:
(a) Loss
or damage due to neglect and/or abuse causing deterioration, mishandling, accident or failure to follow operating instructions.
(b) If aProduct is defective as aresult of leaking batteries
or damage due to water or other liquid.
(c) Defective materials
or workmanship where the defect is due to aProduct having been serviced or modified by other than Canon or aCanon authorized service provider.
(d) Malfunction resulting from the use of accessories, attachments, supplies, parts
or devices (including, without limitation, batteries, film, flash attachments and other accessories) that do not
conform to Canon specifications.
(e) Damage resulting during shipment. (Claim must be presented and examined by the shipper).
(f) Damage
or service resulting from modifications or alterations to aProduct in any way (including any alteration or removal of its serial number or identification marks).
NO IMPLIED WARRANTY, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR APARTICULAR PURPOSE, APPLIES TO APRODUCT AFTER THE
