A sense of unity –
Created by linked panels
The new sensation chair that supports posture in three dimensions:

Die Idee zu diesem facettenreichen Design wurde vom Origami in-
spiriert - der japanischen Kunst des Papierfaltens. Der Stuhl passt
sich dem Körper durch seinen Aufbau in allen drei Dimensionen
an.
bungen, sondern gesellschaftliche Werte kreiert.
ausgezeichnet. Mittlerweile hat der FURTIF insgesamt fünf inter-
nationale Designpreise gewonnen.
The idea for this multifaceted design was inspired by origami, the
Japanese art of paper folding. The chair bends in three dimen-
sions to support a range of postures. With a straightforward and
simple structure, the chair offers a new sensation, and prevents
the user from tiring easily, even when working long hours.
The FURTIF chair is manufactured by ITOKI, a prestigious Japanese
company established in 1890 as Itoki Shoten. Its history spans
more than 125 years of innovative product development. Since its
foundation, ITOKI has continuously delivered new values to society
through “Creation of Spaces, Environments, and Workplaces.”
Under a corporate concept of “For living human beings, and a
green Earth,” ITOKI strives to help individuals, companies
and society itself to realize a full, rich existence.
We Design Tomorrow.
We Design WORK-Style.
The FURTIF Chair has already won several globally inuential
design awards: It won the Red Dot Design Award, following its
success in winning gold in the iF DESIGN AWARD both in 2017.
It has now won ve international design awards.

Safety Precautions
Be sure to follow these precautions in order to use the product safely and correctly.
This symbol indicates a prohibited action. This symbol indicates an instruction or an action.
Requirements on types of reminders: These are based on requirements on the following kinds of risks by the Japan Oce and Institutional Furniture
Association (JOIFA). Warning - There is a possibility of death or serious injury when errors in handling occur. Caution - There is a possibility of
injury or damage to property arising if errors in handling occur.
Caution
when using on
smooth or hard oors
The FURTIF chair uses slip-
resistant twin-wheel urethane
casters, so the chair rolls only
under load. Once you get up,
the rollers brake to prevent
unwanted rolling away.
Nevertheless, you should
always check the position rst
before sitting down and then
sit down. When taking your
seat, check the position of the
chair and then sit down.
Caution
– Do not stand
on the chair. You may fall and
hurt yourself.
Caution
– Do not use for
anything other than its normal
use, such as use moving
things around. You may fall
and hurt yourself.
Caution
– Do not use
in a inhabited space without
ventilation.
Method to determine the required
ventilation volume:
Required ventilation volume
(m³/hr) = 20 x oor area of inhabited
space (m2)
Area occupied per single person
(m²) – Procedure based on Building
Standards Act.
This is one example of calculating
the ventilation volume in an oce.
(Note 1:) Although the meaning of
“20” in the above formula is 20 (m³/
hr x person), the basis for this is the
ventilation volume required based on
the volume of CO2emitted by an adult
male while sitting quietly. (Note 2:) If
the area occupied per single person
in an inhabited room exceeds 10(m²),
it will be set as 10(m²).
Caution
– Do not use with
the seat pan wobbling or when
an abnormal sound occurs.
The chair body may break and
an injury may result.
If there is a defect, immediate-
ly stop using the product and
contact the sales outlet where
it was purchased.
Caution
– Do not sit on
or get up on the armrests. You
could fall and hurt yourself.
Caution
– Do not
disassemble parts that are
not described in the “Parts
Replacement Procedure”.
This could result in an
injury or damage to the chair.
Replacement gas spring may
only be carried out by quali-
ed personnel!
Caution
– Do not insert
your ngers into the gaps of
rotating or movable parts.
Your ngers may be pinched
and injuries may occur.
Caution
– Do not perch
on the front edge of the seat
pan. You may fall and hurt
yourself.

FURTIF Chair Functions & Adjustments
• Do not bump (strike) the back or seat of the chair against
furniture such as the desk or desk pedestal. There is a risk
of damage and wear to the upholstery (coated fabric).
• Do not bump (strike) the chair against wood furniture such as
the desk or desk pedestal. There is a risk of damage to the
wood furniture.
• Do not lubricate movable parts. The oil will drip, and this is will
result in stains on the oor and clothing.
• There is a risk of changes in color or fading due to the effect of
ultraviolet rays. Particularly avoid use in locations where it is in
direct sunlight.
• Do not use with loose bolts or screws. This may result in breakage.
• Use after re-tightening the bolt or screw in the part that has
loosened.
• When the product is initially purchased, signicant chemical
off-gassing may occur. Pay adequate attention to ventilation
and providing air circulation for a short time. In addition, if
the room becomes hot (the rule of thumb is temperature higher
than 28°C and relative humidity above 50%), do not close the
window(s) or provide forced (mechanical) ventilation.

Reminders for moving
When moving the chair, do
so by holding onto the cen-
ter of the backrest top.
When moving the chair, do
not put too much force on
it. This will result in part
breakage.
Do not move the chair by
holding onto a shoulder rest or
the cushioned lumbar support
section of the backrest. Do not
move the chair by holding onto
the hanger when it is installed.
This will result in breakage.

8
Adjustment of seat depth
Adjustment of seat height
The depth of the seat pan can be adjusted to the front and to the
back within a range of approximately 75 mm. It is possible to set
the seat pan positioning to match your body type while seated by
operating a lever under the seat pan.
By moving levers back and forth that are at both ends of the
bottom section of the front of the seat pan (When the levers are
pushed forward, the seat depth is increased. In addition, the depth
is decreased by pulling them forward.), the depth can be adjusted
by bending the front edge of the seat pan.
Although wrinkling, etc. will occur due to the upholstery (coated
fabric) of the seat pan exing inward at the time the depth is
adjusted, it can be used without problems in terms of functions.
When adjusting the depth of the seat pan, do not put the weight of
your body on the front edge of the seat pan. This will act as a drag
on the depth adjustment.
When adjusting the depth of the seat pan, be sure to do the adjust-
ment by holding the levers on both ends. Adjustment by holding a
lever on one side only will result in damage and poor operation.

When increasing seat height
Be sure to be seated and then pull up the pneumatic height ad-
justment lever under the right side of the seat. If you lift your body
upward gradually while remaining seated, the seat pan will rise.
Let go of the lever when the seat pan reaches the desired height.
When decreasing seat height
Be sure to be seated in the center of the seat pan, and when you
pull up the pneumatic height adjustment lever under the right side
of the seat, the seat pan will move lower. Let go of the lever when
the seat pan reaches the desired height.

9
Locking tilt (back) angle
Adjustment of tilt tension
Rule of thumb for tilt tension
The 5 tilt angles can be locked in steps from the initial state to
the nal reclining angle with the tilt knob under the left side of
the seat.
Adjust tilt tension for reclining the backrest with the knob under
the right side of the seat.
The rule of thumb for a suitable tension is a level, at which the
backrest tilts while supporting the back when you lightly rest
against the backrest, and the backrest smoothly comes with you
when you return to an upright position.
Left side while seated:
Right side while seated:
Locking tilt angle
Recline the backrest to the
angle where you want to lock
it, push the tilt knob under
the left side of the seat in the
inward direction and remove
your hand from the knob.
The backrest will be locked
in place.
• When adjusting the tension, be sure to do this while sitting up
straight (do not lean back). Rotation of the tilt tension adjust-
ment knob will be more dicult if you do this while leaning back.
• When adjusting the tension, do not insert a nger into the hole
in the knob. You may hurt yourself.
When the backrest does not smoothly come along with you to the
upright position at the nal attest tilt angle, lift up your body so
you are putting little weight on the chair while still sitting and raise
the tilt tension with the backrest returned to the upright position.
Unlocking tilt angle
1) Pull the tilt knob under the
left side of the seat in the
outward direction and remove
your hand.
2) When you tilt backward, put-
ting the weight of your body on
the backrest, the tilt angle will
be unlocked.

10
Adjustment of adjustable armrests
Pivoting and sliding of armrests
It is possible to pivot the armrests 10° outward and 20° inward
respectively (for a total of 30°), and it is possible to slide the
armrests 50mm forward and backward and 25mm to the right
and left.
Use of a keyboard and/or mouse for a long period of time places
a signicant strain on the neck, shoulders and arms. By adjusting
the positions of the armrests to match the positions of your arms
and the height of your desk, you can alleviate the strain placed on
your arms.
Adjustment of height
While pressing the height adjustment button on the side of the
armrest, bring the armrest in line with the desired height and then
let go of the armrest. It is possible to slide the armrest 100 mm
up and down.

11
Contour seat
Construction for pelvic & side support
Large reclining angle
The inside of the seat pan is hollow and it has a construction
with an inner shell (core material) hanging from the left and right
ends that includes narrow slits. The seat pan smoothly contours
in response to the load placed on it, thereby supporting it the
body weight by dispersing it in a proper manner. This provides a
comfortable seating without impeding blood ow. The body heat
also emanates from the slits, preventing moisture buildup.
Matching the slope of your back, the cushioned lumbar support
sections on the sides move, automatically supporting the pelvis
from behind your back and from both sides and alleviating the
strain on the body.
A tilt angle of 23°and a pelvis support system of 10°allows your
body to spread out, approximating the sleeping position, and
enabling you to be refreshed.
When rocking backward there is a risk of
bumping into someone. So be careful to check for
people round you.

Inspection
Care
Screw loosening
When play develops between parts due to loosening of a bolt or
screw during use, re-tightening is key to the product lasting a long
time. Please do the re-tightening without delay.
Care for the backs of the backrest / seat and base
Wet a clean cloth with water, forcefully wring it out and wipe the
surface. When the chair is very dirty, wipe it with a diluted neutral
liquid cleaner:
• Avoid using thinners and alcohols. Color changes may occur.
• When caring for aluminum, wipe away the moisture with a dry
cloth. If left with moisture adhering to it, this will result in
rust and/or a change in the color.
Care for the fabric / cushions
Dust by hand or suction off the dust with a vacuum cleaner. If the
cushioned sections are very dirty, we recommend replacement
with new cushions.
When using the product with a loose bolt or screw, the
chair body may break and injury may occur.

Procedure for part replacement
The following parts can be replaced by the user. When there is wear or breakage occurs,
carefully read the following,
then replace the
part and continue using the chair.
Place the chair itself on its side in a stable location. Insert a at head
screwdriver into the gap between the base leg and caster, move the
screwdriver to pry the caster off. Firmly insert the new caster until it
is fully seated. If the caster falls out during use, you could be injured.
Warning
Do not touch anything other than the parts to be replaced.
Gas springs are not allowed to be replaced. You could suf-
fer an injury if you disassemble parts under high pressure,
such as the gas cylinder or spring.
Caution
When replacing parts, put the seat in the highest position.
The seat could suddenly move upward, and you could
suffer an injury.
Caution
During the work to replace a part, wear gloves. You could
suffer an injury such as pinching a nger.
Requirements on types of reminders:
These are based on requirements for the following kinds
of risks by the Japan Oce and Institutional Furniture
Association (JOIFA).
Warning
There is a possibility of death or serious injury if errors in
handling occur.
Caution
There is a possibility of injury or damage to property
arising if errors in handling occur.
Precautions for casters
Casters are wear parts. If a problem
such as breakage or an abnormal sound
occurs, we recommend to replace the
caster without delay. Please contact our
CAPIEM Service Center for spare parts.
Reminders when using the twin-wheel
urethane casters
• FURTIF chair will be delivered with roll resistant urethane
safety casters. Nevertheless, when using the chair on
hard oors, such as tiling, ensure that the chair behaves
differently than it does on carpeting, which could cause it
to tilt forward and injure you.
• The plasticizers included in soft vinyl ooring can
penetrate the urethane part of twin-wheel casters with
resistance (grip) and problems such as breakage and
color transfer may occur.
• The urethane part of twin-wheel urethane casters with
resistance (grip) varies widely due to the usage environ-
ment, but aging will naturally occur due to hydrolysis.
The detrioration is also accelerated by the stripper used
at the time the oor surface is waxed, so we recommend
prompt caster replacement if breakage occurs.
Safety precautions Replacement of casters
Caution: The replacement of the
gas spring may only be carried
out by qualied personnel!
Caution: We recommend to use only the moun-
ted urethane safety casters, as there is a risk of
injury due to a change in rolling behavior when
casters will be changed.

15
If you think there might be a problem ...
Phenomenon Items to check & approach to take
The curbed casters roll more than
expected.
On very smooth oors, use additional non-slip oor mats.
The seat does not go lower. When operating the lever, do you put your body weight on the center of the seat pan?
Has the seat pan gotten into the lowest position?
The seat does not rise. When operating the lever, do you lift your body upward from the seat pan?
Has the seat pan gotten into the highest position?
The seat rises despite not using the
height lever.
The phenomenon of the seat pan dropping 1-2cm when the height lever is not used is called “tuckering
(sinking)” and this is a system equipped with a gas cylinder for raising and lowering the seat that alleviates
the shock when you sit down.
An abnormal noise occurs. When an abnormal noise is produced by tilting (the back of the chair), etc., immediately stop using the chair
and contact the sales location where you made the purchase.
The grime does not come out of
the cushioned sections.
When grime does not come out despite taking the “care” measure, we recommend that the part be replaced
by a new cushion.
The backrest does not come back
(to upright).
Has the tilt knob been unlocked?
Try turning the tilt tension adjustment knob in the “Increase” direction.
Sit on the front of the seat (front edge), not on the back of the seat.
If the problem is not xed, we would request that you stop
using the chair and contact the sales location where you
made the purchase or the CAPIEM Service Center.
