INTRODUCTION
The
McMzlel
L-90Sweeperisdesignedforuse
with
mostyoursweeper.Thetermsright,
left,
front
andrearrefer
makesofcompacttractorsandridingmowers
with
a tothesweeperwhenseatedonthetractorseatfacingthe
drawbar.Readthismanualcarefullybeforeoperatingnormaldirectionofforwardtravel.

PREPARATION
OPERATION
Theareatobesweptshouldbeclearedofalllargetwigs,
sticks,
andobjectswhich
might
plugorbethrownbythe
sweeper.Smalltwigsmaybesweptifapproachedina
directionparallel
with
thebrushes.
CAUTION:Yoursweepermay
throwdebrisasfarasthetractor
operator'sposition.Toreducethe
possibilityofinjurytotheoperator,
thefollowingrulesmustbeobserved:
1.
Wearsafety
glasses
(with
side
shields)
atalltimeswhilesweep-
ing.
2.Regulategroundspeedsothe
pathofdebristerminatesatthe
front
insideedgeofthehopper.
3.Adjustsweeperheighttothe
transportpositionwhenever
crossing
roadsordriveways.Al-
ways
cross
theseareasatvery
slow
speeds.
HEIGHTADJUSTMENTS
Theheightadjustmentselectorhassevenholes.Thetop
holeisthetransportposition.Thetransportposition
should
beusedwhenevercrossingdrivesorroadways,when
transportinglongdistancesorcrossingareas
that
sweeping
is
notdesired.
Thesecondhole
from
thetopisthehighestsweeping
position;the
bottom
holeisthe
closest
sweepingposition
with
fourintermediatesweepingpositions.
Make
sure
theheightselectorpinis
fully
engagedinthedesiredho*e
beforeoperating.

SWEEPING
EMPTYING
HOPPER
For
bestsweepingperformance,observethefollowing
guidelines:
1.Terrainmustberelativelyeven.Alwaysmowjust
priortosweeping.
Leaves
willactuallypickupeasier
andcleaneriftheyarefirstpartiallymulchedbya
mower.
Leaves
that
haveimbeddedinthe
turf
arevery
difficulttopickup.
Mowing
liftsimbeddedmaterials
andmakesthemeasiertopickup.

Beforesweeping,pickupalltreebranches,etc.too
largetobepickedupbythesweeperastheycanlodge
inthebrushmechanismand
cause
wheelslippage.The
metalskidpan{SeeFig.6)whichisunderthe
full
width
ofthesweeperprotectsit
from
rocksand
protrudingobjects.
The
hopperisemptiedbypivotingitoverthebackofthe
sweeper
unit.Polypropylenebrusheswillmeltorburn
whenexposedtointenseheatoropenflame.Besureto
keepa safedistance
from
pilesofburningleavesorother
sources
ofintenseheat.Donotback-uptopilesof
burningleaves.
CAUTION:
DONOTemptysweep-
er
hopper,drivesweeper
close
to,or
back
upto,anopenfire.Sweeper
hoppercontentsandsweeperbrush-
es
areflammableandmayignite
resultinginpossiblepersonalinjury
orpropertydamage.
Itwillalsospreada largepileofdebrisonthefirst
pass
so
cleanupmaybeaccomplishedin
successive
passes
withoutcloggingthesweeper,
3.Adjustheightsothefirststagebrushesarein"light"
contact
with
the
turf.
A suggestedtechniqueistofirst
set
theheightlowenoughtoencounterslightor
occa-
sional
wheelslippage,thenraisetheadjustingleverone
notch.
Whensweepinga pileofdebris,adjusttomaxi-
mumheight,theskidpanwillspreadthepileandwill
allowthebrushestopickupmoredebristhanifsetat
a
lowerposition.

Thebest
groundspeedwillvarydependingontheamountof
debris
andtypeof
turf.
Different
speeds
shouldbe
trieduntiloneisfoundwhichresultsinmaximum
efficiency.
5.Shouldwheelsirppageoccursuddenlywhilesweeping,
check
thebrushesfora lodged
twig
andcheckthe
shroud
pointwherethefirstandsecondstagebrushes
intersect
fora lodgedclumpof
grass
orleaves,ifa
clumpofleavesor
grass
isfoundinthisarea,itcanbe
easily
removedbymanuallyturningthebrushesinthe
reverse
direction.

IMPORTANT:Avoidmakingshortturnsandusecare
whenbacking.Thereartractortires
maycontactthesweepertow-barcausing
damage,whenveryshortturnsaremade.

STORAGE
Beforestoringthesweeper,itshouldbethoroughlycleaned
andany
scratches
orscuffedsurfacesrepainted.Storeina
dry,weatherprotectedlocation.
Thesweepermaybehungona garagewallorother
suitableareaforconvenientstorage.
Removethehopper
from
thesweeperhousingassembly
andtherod
from
thehopperand
fold
thehopper
flat.
Thesweepershouldthenbehungbyitstowbaronsuit-
ablelargenailsorhooks.The
flattened
hoppershouldbe
secured
tothesweeper
after
hanging.

Thetow-barshouldbepositionedontopofthetow
bracketsandtheboltsinstalled
from
thetop.Thebolts
should
besecured
with
thelockwashersandnutsprovided.
TheHoppershouldbeproppedopen
with
therod(threaded
endup)andthenuttightened
lightly
againsttheupper
hoppertubularframe.
TheHoppershouldthenbeinsertedintheslottedhopper
retainers(Figure6)intheSweeperHousingAssembly.

LUBRICATION
After
each10hoursofuse:
1.Thefoursweeperbrushbearingsshouldbelubricated
with
a fewdropsof
light
oil.
2.Thewheelsshouldberemoved,thegears,pinions,and
axles
shouldbecleanedandregreased
with
a
light
coatingofmulti-purposeor#2Lithium-soapbase
^grease.
3.Whenreplacingwheels,besureto
pilot
thedustshield
ontheaxlespacerandtoalignthebrushdrivegear
teeth
with
thedrivewheelteeth.
IMPORTANT:Thewheelmustslidefreelyontoshaft
andgears.Forcingthewheelon
with
thewheel
bolt
will
damagethedrive
mechanism.
BRUSH
REPLACEMENT
Brushes
shouldbereplacedaccordingtothefollowing
proceduie:
1.Removewheel,cotter
keys,
piniongears,pawlsand
washers
from
both
sides
ofsweeper.
2.Graspbrushandslidetowardendofsweeperopposite
heightadjustmentlever.
3.Tipbrushtoclearhousingandpull
from
sweeper
housingassembly.
4.Replacebrushbyreversingtheaboveprocedure.
Note
that
thebrushisslightlyoffsetontheshaft.Besureto
positionthelongershaftendofthebrushintheside
oppositetheheightselectorlever.
5.Thepawlsandpiniongearsmustbeinstalledas
illustrated(Figure8Aand8B)tofunctionproperly.
