WARNINGS !
A Versions:
Apex and Apex Pro air samp ing pumps are designed to be robust, however they
shou d not be dropped or subjected to mechanica shock. DO NOT suck in water,
or high y saturated or corrosive gases. Fai ure to comp y wi render the
warranty inva id.
These instruments are designed as persona samp ing units operating from
interna batteries. They MUST NOT be powered for pro onged periods from
externa supp ies.
They contain no user serviceab e parts and if a fau t is suspected the instrument
must be returned immediate y to Case a CEL or to a Case a CEL Approved
Agency for repair.
The warranty DOES NOT extend to c eaning or genera servicing of the
instrument.
Intrinsica y Safe Versions:
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DOWNLOAD data via the IR port in a hazardous area.
Use on y a CASELLA APPROVED Intrinsica y Safe battery pack. Part Number
182013C (4.8 V, 1.7 Ah Nicke meta - hydride). Battery packs for the non
intrinsica y safe versions MUST NOT be connected to the intrinsica y safe
versions.
DO NOT use the battery charger in a hazardous area.
DO NOT use the equipment if the outer case of the instrument , or the battery
pack is cracked or damaged in any way as this inva idates the intrinsica y safe
certification.
The user MUST ENSURE that the I.S. rating of the pump to be used is suitab e
for the I.S. rating of the intended hazardous area.
To prevent ignition of f ammab e or combustib e atmospheres, DISCONNECT
POWER before servicing.
DO NOT service whi e in a hazardous area.
Instructions specific to hazardous area insta ations (reference
European ATEX Directive 94/9/EC, Annex II, 1.0.6.):
The equipment may be used with f ammab e gases and vapours with apparatus
Groups IIA, IIB and with temperature c asses T1, T2, T3 and T4.
The equipment is certified on y for use in ambient temperatures in the range
+5
o
C to +40
o
C and shou d not be used outside this range.
The certificate marking are detai ed in the rear of the handbook.
Repair of this equipment sha be carried out by the manufacturer or in
accordance with the app icab e code of practice.
The certification of this equipment re ies on the fo owing materia s used in its
construction:
High Impact PC- ABS/ C ear Po ycarbonate/Acry ic.
If the equipment is ike y to come into contact with aggressive substances, then
it is the responsibi ity of the user to take suitab e precautions that prevent it
from being adverse y affected, thus ensuring that the type of protection is not
compromised. (Aggressive substances e.g. so vents that may affect po ymeric
materia s.)
Suitab e precautions e.g. regu ar checks as part of routine inspections or
estab ishing from the materia ’s data sheet that it is resistant to specific
chemica s.
Under certain extreme circumstances, the non-meta ic parts incorporated in the
enc osure of this equipment may generate an ignition-capab e eve of
e ectrostatic charge. Therefore, when it is used for app ications that specifica y
require group II, category 1 equipment, the equipment sha not be insta ed in a

3
ocation where the externa conditions are conducive to the bui d-up of
e ectrostatic charge on such surfaces. Additiona y, the equipment sha on y be
c eaned with a damp c oth.

Manual opera ion is described in Chap er 4.
2.1 Charging the Battery
Three ypes of ba ery pack are available: wo non-I.S. and one I.S. The ba ery pack connec ors for non-I.S.
and I.S. are no compa ible.
Standard 4.8 V, 2.7 Ah nickel-me al hydride pack ha is charged in si u. Depending on loading, a fully
charged ba ery pack can provide up o 20 hours of con inuous opera ion. (Refer o able 7.2 for de ails).
Non-rechargeab e pack for emergency use only ha akes four AA Alkaline dry cells. Depending on
ba ery ype and flow ra e, his can give up o approxima ely 8 hours of con inuous opera ion. This pack
mus no be used wi h I.S. Versions.(See Apex Li e).
I.S. version 4.8 V, 1.7 Ah nickel-me al hydride ba ery pack ha is charged in si u. Depending on loading, a
fully charged pack can provide up o 20 hours of con inuous opera ion. (Refer o able 7.2 for de ails).

DO NOT open the battery compartment of I.S. versions in a hazardous area.
DO NOT charge I.S. battery packs in a hazardous area.
The ba ery pack is ins alled in a compar men loca ed a he bo om rear of he ins rumen (Figure 4) A
cap ive screw locks he compar men cover.
There are wo ypes of charger for non I.S and wo
ypes of charger for I.S uni s. The single-way Fas
Charger (Par No. 182052B) and he 5-way chargers for
non I.S. use lis ed in Sec ion 8.3 can be used only for
non I.S. versions. I will no charge I.S. versions.
I.S. versions mus be charged only wi h he single-way
I.S. Charger (Par no. 182261B) or he 5-way chargers
for I.S. use lis ed in Sec ion 8.3. For compliance
reasons, hese chargers accura ely con rol curren
during charging, so ake a sligh ly longer ime o charge
he ba ery pack. These chargers can be used wi h non
I.S. versions, bu will ake longer o achieve a full
charge.
Charging is accomplished by inser ing he comple e
Apex uni in o a drop-in charger (see Figure 5). All
ba ery chargers for Apex sampling pumps are
in elligen uni s wi h a safe y ime-ou and s andby
rickle charge mode o keep he pump ready for use.
The use of modern fas charge echnology enables a discharged non I.S. pack o be fully recharged wi hin 3
hours. Depending on fil er ype, a 1 hour charge can give a non I.S. pack sufficien power for 8 hours
opera ion. Similarly, a discharged I.S. pack can be fully recharged wi hin 4.5 hours and depending on fil er
ype, a 1.5 hour charge can give i sufficien power for 8 hours opera ion.
A wo colour LED on he charger shows he charging s a e. A cons an red indica es ha charging is aking
place while a cons an green indica es ha he full charge is being main ained by a rickle charge. (If nei her
colour is shown while he pump is in he charger, a faul condi ion exis s.)
When an Apex uni is ini ially placed in he charger uni , he LED will flash red for a few seconds before
changing o cons an red. If he ba ery has been deeply discharged, i is possible ha he LED will con inue
o flash red for a longer period as he charger uni ries o condi ion he ba ery before en ering he fas
