Premise
The fans conforming to the ATEX directive differ from stand-
ard fans as they are built with special precautions in order
to make them suitable to be used in poptentially explosive
environments.
In addition to the particular construction of the fan, particular monitoring and
maintenance are critical so as to maintain the fan safety requirements over time
and for its suitability for use in the potentially explosive environment it is placed in.
This manual contains special requirements for this purpose.
Therefore, strictly comply with the instructions in this manual in addition to that
already required in the user and standard basic maintenance manual concern-
ing your model.
If different instructions are provided for the same activity
in the two manuals, that indicated in this manual is to be
given priority.
The Manufacturer assumes no responsibility for damage and malfunctions due
to non-compliance with the requirements of this document and the information
on the fan plates.
For any doubts, questions or particular conditions of use contact the Manufacturer.
Personnel operating in potentially explosive environments
for installation, commissioning, maintenance and decom-
missioning purposes must do so according to the relevant
regulations in force.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

General information
The Manufacturer refuses any liability for any damage originating from incorrect
or unwise operations.
It is strictly forbidden and dangerous to use the product
for different uses from those provided within the eld of
application.
Normally intended use
This fan was designed to:
Product a ow of air, gas or steam by increasing their pressure,
with a variable ow rate and head according to the model.
The steam or gas must comply with the features of the model.
The fans suitable for explosion-proof environments (ATEX)
differ from standard fans as they are built with special
precautions in order to make them suitable to be used in
poptentially explosive environments.
In addition to the particular construction of the fan, particular monitoring and
maintenance are critical so as to maintain the fan safety requirements over time
and for its suitability for use in the potentially explosive environment it is placed in.
Strictly comply with the instructions in this manual in ad-
dition to that already required in the user and standard
maintenance manual and Attachment Ex.
In the case of different instructions in the two manuals, that
indicated in this manual is to be given priority.
Non authorised use
Personnel operating in potentially explosive environments
for installation, commissioning, maintenance and decom-
missioning purposes must be aware of the risks and pre-
cautions to be taken.
Such personnel must operate in accordance with current
regulations concerning potentially explosive atmospheres
ATEX 94/9/EC.
Non-conforming installation, commissioning, maintenance and decommissioning
of the fan is forbidden, as well as in environments with stricter characteristics
than those stipulated in the manual and on the plates on the machine.
Furthermore do not use the fan:
- with abrasive uids
- in high oxygen content environments (> 21%)
- in low pressure environments (< 0.8 bar) or high pressure (> 1.1 bar)
- at forbidden speeds
- in combination with other machines or accessories that do not conform to the
ATEX directive
- without the correct wiring and conguration of the temperature control devices,
rotation or vibrations, when required
- without the air gap between the impeller and nozzle, when required
- in risk environments other than those intended

The general label indicates the name of the series and the size of the fan; the
bidding documents bear the complete description of the supply; attachment Ex
that accompanies the supply indicates the basic operating and use character-
istics of the fan.
ATEX reference standards
In addition to the specic reference standards for each type of fan, indicated on
the relevant manual, ATEX fans, which are suitable to be installed in environ-
ments with particular ammability conditions, comply with the following standards:
EN 14986, EN 13463-1, EN 1127-1
and where applicable to EN 13463-5 ed EN 13463-6.

Categories of constructive safety
The potentially explosive atmosphere can be caused by:
- Gas, potentially explosive vapours and mists.
- Dust, potentially explosive dust.
- Gas and Dust, both.
Depending on the duration of the potentially explosive atmosphere and its type,
the risk areas are dened and shared with the customer; these can differ between
inside and outside the fan.
Normally such characteristics are described and agreed upon in a separate
document attached to the contract review (attachment Ex).
ATEX fans can only be used in the RISK ZONE dened by the Manufacturer and
Customer upon signing this document.
ATEX fans are consequently divided into two Groups:
- Fans Group I - For installation in a pit (NOT PROVIDED and not conforming
to this manual)
- Fans Group II – Surface equipment.
ATEX fans are also grouped in three categories depending on the level of protec-
tion so that the anti-explosion safety is guaranteed:
- Category 1 in the case of rare or unusual malfunctions (NOT SUPPLIED);
- Category 2 in conditions of foreseeable malfunction; high protection;
- Category 3 in normal operating conditions; normal protection.

Features
The INTERNAL and EXTERNAL CATEGORY of the fan can be different accord-
ing to the different risk AREA INSIDE or OUTSIDE the fan.
The basic rule between the INTERNAL and EXTERNAL category is as follows:
- For fans that are not fully ducted, consider the same CATEGORY of the fan.
- For fully ducted fans but in closed or poorly ventilated environments, consider
the same CATEGORY of the fan.
- For fully ducted fans, in environments that are not closed or closed but poorly
ventilated, one different CATEGORY between INTERNAL or EXTERNAL of the
fan can be considered.

CONDITIONS OF INSTALLATION AND USE:
Do not install, switch-on or perform maintenance on the fan
and/or ancillary equipment if not completely certain that
you are aware of and have the appropriate requirements
concerning ATEX products.
The fan operating data and nominal performance ratings are indicated in the
relevant job documents and summarised in the attachment Ex. Any use beyond
that indicated in these documents is to be considered non-conforming.
Environmental conditions
Unless stated otherwise in the job documents the operating conditions of the
fan are:
- Ambient temperature between -20°C and +40°C (extendable to +60°C if agreed
in advance and specied in Attachment Ex).
- Ambient pressure between 0.8 and 1.1 bar.
- Maximum volumetric fraction of the Oxygen content at 21%.
- Maximum increase in thermodynamic energy 25 KJ/Kg.
Ambient humidity: High environmental humidity values (generally above 80%)
for long periods of time can quicken corrosive phenomena and therefore indirectly
increase the risk of explosion. Therefore, carefully monitor for any such situations
and if necessary, increase the frequency of the checks on the fan.
Environmental pollution: Pollutants in the environment can affect the explosive
condition, thereby increasing the risk. Therefore, if environmental polluting fac-
tors or fan uid is present, they should be analysed and adequately monitored
by the user.
Characteristics of the treated uid
Fluids with the following characteristics CANNOT be treated
inside the fan (unless agreed otherwise and/or dened in
Attachment Ex):
- (For Dust) Abrasive uids.
- (For Gas) Potentially explosive uids other than categories IIA and IIB.
- Fluids with an intake temperature greater than 60°C.
If the intake Fluid temperature use
is > 60°C you must:
- make sure there is the label on the fan that indicates the maximum intake
temperature allowed;
- make sure that the maximum intake uid temperature does not exceed the value
indicated in normal operating conditions, in the case of fans in category 3 internal.
If the fan is in category 2 internal, make sure that the maximum intake uid tem-
perature does not exceed the specied value, even in conditions of foreseeable
malfunctions, by actively checking the intake uid temperature via a sensor.

Product Identication
The identication plate reports the serial number, some important data
and the CE logo.
The plates must NOT be removed or concealed under any
circumstances.
Another plate is installed in addition to the products suitable
for explosion-proof environments (ATEX).

General information about safety
Everything stated in this ATEX manual is in addition to the
safety requirements on the machine and in the basic manual
of the fan and/or accessory equipment.
RESIDUAL RISKS
An analysis on residual risks of the product was carried out as required by the
Machinery Directive.
The user must consider the following risk and/or RESIDUAL RISK ZONES so
as to prevent a possible ring and use the fan safely:
- Hot surfaces of the auger due to the uid
- Hot uid or gas leaking from the auger
- Lightning
- Electromagnetic Radio Frequency waves from 104to 3x1012 Hz
- Ionizing radiations
- Ultrasounds
- Adiabatic compression and shock waves
- Exothermic reactions.
Using frequency converters (inverters)
CAUTION: If using frequency converters you must comply with the recommen-
dations of the Manufacturer in order to avoid electromagnetic interference and
where necessary, use special devices to reduce the interference.
Gas leaks from the ducting:
CAUTION: Any ducting, to which the fans are connected, must guarantee
adequate sealing with respect to possible gas passages from the inside to the
outside of the duct and vice versa, unless it was preliminarily provided and
declared that the fan operates without ducting and with the same risk category
between the internal and external ZONE of the fan.
Parts of the duct or the system are not earthed:
CAUTION: In addition to checking the earth of the fan you must verify that the
ducts which the fan is connected to or other metal parts are also adequately
linked to the earth.
Where necessary use an additional earth cable between the duct and fan.
Fans with open intake:
CAUTION: People and objects must avoid transiting near the intake in the case
of fans with an open intake, despite the protection grid, due to the force of the
incoming ow. It is advisable to make an adequate area in front of the fan non-
accessible.
Accident prevention

Installation method
The product must be installed with full knowledge of the purpose of the installa-
tion and issues related to the operation of the fans, accessory equipment, place
and ducting where it will be installed.
In a potentially explosive explosion-proof environment
(ATEX) you must consider that the installation, commission-
ing, maintenance and decommissioning require special care
in order to prevent accidental sparks, ames or hot surfaces.
With regard to anything not mentioned in this manual, apply
all regulations and checks described in the basic manual
of your fan model.
Precautions regardless of the fan
Do not use working tools that generate sparks, caused by cutting, grinding or
welding. If hazardous equipment must be used you must rst check that the area
is free from potentially ammable substances.
The personnel in charge of all life stages of the fan and/or equipment must be
aware of the risk arising from operating in a potentially explosive atmosphere
and must have previously read and understood the contents of this manual
and must operate in accordance with current regulations concerning potentially
explosive atmospheres.
Preliminary checks and inspections
Some checks and inspections must be carried out even after installation and
operation, as well as the restart of the fan. Refer to the MAINTENANCE chapter
in this manual as well as the basic manual of your fan model.
Inspections that cannot be carried with the fan stationary
or disconnected, it is mandatory for a member of staff to
supervise while the inspection is carried out, by standing
close to an emergency stop switch which is to be used if
necessary.
The main checks to be made are:
- the distance between the impeller and nozzle (air gap);
- vibrations;
- temperature of the bearings;
- measurement of the rotary speed;
- measurement of the earth resistance.
Before starting the maintenance activities make sure that there is no hazardous
residue from the conveyed medium.
If necessary, remove it with appropriate means.
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN
Installation

Start-up
Before starting the fan you must know what is described
above and rely on skilled professionals who are aware of
all the problems related to explosion-proof environments
(ATEX).
In addition to this manual, consider all the requirements
and information described in the basic manual for your
model of the fan.
CHECKS WITH THE FAN STATIONARY
Make sure before commissioning that the constructive class of the fan is suitable
for the environment in which it will be used (internal and external class).
Some checks, controls and/or procedures to be performed
are closely linked.
You cannot do anything without considering the problems
derived or related to it.
- Some checks need to be carried out in different situations and periods of the
life of the fan and the procedures are described in the MAINTENANCE chapter
under the INSPECTIONS heading.
In the case of fans equipped with an inspection door you can inspect the inside
of the fan.
For fans not equipped with an inspection door for the internal inspection, remove
the ducts and if necessary the transmission motor unit.
- Check by rotating the impeller manually and very slowly for there to be no
interference between the impeller and the nozzle.
Perform the "Check the distance between the impeller
and nozzle (air gap)" procedure described in the relevant
chapter.
- Inspect the fan from the outside and inside so as to check its integrity, that there
are no foreign bodies, dirt, faults, etc.
- Verify the integrity of the seals, near the crankshaft passage as well as on the
ducts next to the fan.
- Where applicable, connect the temperature, vibration and rotation speed moni-
toring devices, according to that described herein and in the reference technical
documentation, in particular to setting the control thresholds properly.
- Make sure that all the earths of the fan are connected properly. Once this is
done take the measurement of the earth resistance.

Checking the distance between the impeller and nozzle
(air gap)
Complying with the distance between the impeller and the nozzle is one of the
most important parameters for a fan that works in ATEX environments.
These fans are thoroughly checked but you cannot exclude a shift between the
impeller and nozzle during the transport, commissioning or special maintenance.
Proceed as follows for this inspection:
- Turn off and disconnect the fan from the power supply and from all sources of
energy interacting with it; also interrupt the ow of uid although inactive.
If necessary, sanitise the environment if gas or dust that may
be toxic or harmful for the operator are present.
- Remove the protection on the intake of the fan and/or any ducts.
- Obtain the specic key K(supplied) or use a similar shim of appropriate dimen-
sions, according to distance Sor the required air gap, according to diameter D
of the fan nozzle.
Indicatively shim Sor the required air gap varies from 2 to 20 mm.
- Measure diameter Dof the opening of the nozzle (contact side with the impeller).
Depending on diameter D, distance Sor the required air gap should be:
For diameter Dup to 200 mm S = 2 mm
For diameter Dfrom 200 to 2000 mm S = 1% of D
(e.g. D= 480 mm S= 4.8 mm)
For diameter Dgreater than 2000 mm S = 20 mm
- Insert key K(supplied) or a similar shim Son the entire circumference of the
impeller, making sure to double check the shortest distance between the impeller
and nozzle. Perform this operation at least 4 times, rotating the impeller manu-
ally 90° each time.
N.B. Shim S or the key must simply be inserted, even in the presence of
slight friction, for the measurement to be complied with.
- Where necessary, depending on the conformation of the blades, also check
distance Sor the air gap in the orthogonal direction, between the blades and the
inner prole of the nozzle (contact side with the blades).
In case of non-compliance with the minimum distance between the impeller and
nozzle, check that the latter is assembled and centres correctly and verify the
possible presence of deformations due to an improper installation. If the problem
persists, contact the Manufacturer.
- Fit the protection on the intake of the fan and/or any ducts and restore the
correct operating conditions.

CHECKS WITH THE FAN RUNNING
Speed of the impeller
The impeller rotation speed limit is specied in the job documents as well in At-
tachment Ex and on the fan plate.
Fan ow rate and partialisation of the ow.
The ow adjustment systems must be opened and closed
slowly so as to avoid the risk of generating sparks which
can create the risk of explosion.
Indicatively, do not perform individual opening or closing
adjustments in less than 1 second.
First start-up
After the rst start-up you must:
- Measure the vibrations.
- Measure the temperature of the bearings.
- Measure the speed of rotation of the impeller or of the transmission shaft.
N.B. Refer to the INSPECTIONS chapter in this manual and the user and standard
basic maintenance manual related to your fan model.

Bearing temperature control
Check the temperatures by referring to the standard basic manual relevant to
your fan model.
The following temperature checks are to be carried out:
10000 hours - (2 hour) - Measurement of bearing temperature with mobile
instrument

Caution: fan operation with high temperature values may
cause a failure on the bearings and can cause damage to
property or injury to people!

Check the vibrations by referring to the standard basic manual relevant to
your fan model.
The following checks are to be carried out:

Measurement of impeller rotary speed
Measurement of manual rotary speed
A calibrated rev counter is required for the manual measurement of the rotary
speed of the impeller or the transmission shaft (with a mobile instrument).
Check that the detected value of the number of revs (rpm) does not differ by more
or less than 5% of the nominal speed for which the fan was designed.

instrument
Continuous measurement of the rotary speed
The fan must be equipped with a rotation sensor (provided with certain mod-
els) for the continuous measurement of the rotary speed of the impeller or the
transmission shaft.
For the details concerning the operation and wiring of the sensor, refer to the
manual of the sensor.
The user must verify the reading of the shaft rotary signal when the fan starts in
normal operating conditions so as to dene the operating threshold.
A deviation of +/- 5% from the determined threshold value must therefore be
considered abnormal.
The user must consider an appropriate transient (brief pulse) when the motor is
started/stopped for the deviation from the nominal number of revs.
In the case of use with an inverter, the number of revs of the impeller or the shaft
must be veried in relation to the number of revs of the motor each time it is used.

Measurement of earth resistance
The measurement of the earth resistance of the fan must be carried out by meas-
uring the resistance between the reference earth point of the user with the various
metal parts of the fan, after making sure that the earth connection was made.
Take the measurements on the chair, on the motor, on the auger, on the impel-
ler and any other metal parts of the fan according to its construction, such as:
shutters, transmission shaft and protection nets.
Pay attention to reading problems in the case of a direct measurement on painted
parts - check the electrical continuity on the screws connected to it.
Applying a tension of at least 12 Volt you must measure a resistance lower than
or equal to 100 Ohm.
