instructions, operating and maintenance procedures, parts list and diagram. Keep
your invoice with this manual. Write the invoice number on the inside of the front
cover. Keep the manual and invoice in a safe and dry place for future reference.
Safety Warnings and Precautions
WARNING: When using tool, basic safety precautions should always be fol-
lowed to reduce the risk of personal injury and damage to equipment.
Read all instructions before using this tool!
1. Keep work area clean. Clutteredareasinviteinjuries.
2. Observeworkarea conditions.Donot usemachinesor powertoolsin dampor
wet locations. Don’t expose to rain. Keep work area well lighted. Do not use
electrically powered tools in the presence of flammable gases or liquids.
3. Keep children away. Childrenmustneverbeallowedin the work area. Do not
let them handle machines, tools, or extension cords.
4. Store idle equipment. When not in use, tools must be stored in a dry location
to inhibit rust. Always lock up tools and keep out of reach of children.
5. Use the right tool for the job.Therearecertain applicationsforwhichthistool
wasdesigned.Itwill do thejobbetterand more safely attheratefor which it was

Gas Detector Safety Precautions
1. Never ignore a high alarm condition. This gas detector is designed to detect
hazardousatmosphericconditions.Anindicationoflifethreateninghazardsshould
be taken seriously.
2. Turn on, and allow theunit to warm up, BEFORE entering the area when gases
are to be detected.
3. High or off-scale readings may indicate a flammable gas concentration.
4. Before entering an area for testing, make a test of the unit in a safe area with a
smallamountofknown gas from acontainer.Thentestagainwithcleanair.The
readingshouldreturntozeros.
5. Where a high or alarm condition is detected, evacuate the affected area and
contactthelocalfiredepartment,gascompany,orotherproper authoritiesfrom
outsidetheaffected area. Without switchingon any electrical devices, properly
ventilatetheareabeforereenteringandretest.
6. Do not store or use this device in or around corrosive gases.
7. Do not drop this device. Damage will occur to the internal components.
8. Charge batteries and switch unit on or off only in a nonhazardous atmo-
spheric location.
9. Some vapor compounds may affect the operation of the sensor. Always use
your sense of smell to supplement the readings of the meter. If your sense
of smell detects gas that the meter does not, get the meter calibrated im-
intended.Donotmodifythistool and do not use thistoolforapurposeforwhich
it was not intended.
6. Check fordamagedparts. Beforeusinganytool,anypartthatappearsdamaged
shouldbecarefullycheckedtodetermine thatitwill operateproperlyand perform
its intended function.Any part that is damaged should be properly repaired or
replacedbya qualified technician. Donotusethe tool ifanyswitchdoesnot turn
OnandOffproperly.
7. Replacement parts and accessories. When servicing, use only identical
replacement parts. Use of any other parts will void the warranty. Only use
accessoriesintendedforusewiththistool. Approved accessories are available
fromHarborFreightTools.
8. Donotoperate toolifunder the influenceof alcohol ordrugs. Read warning
labels if taking prescription medicine to determine if your judgment or reflexes
are impaired while taking drugs. If there is any doubt, do not operate the tool.
9. Maintenance. For your safety, service and maintenance should be performed
regularlybyaqualifiedtechnician.

When unpacking, check to make sure the following parts are included. If any parts
are missing or broken, please call Harbor Freight Tools at the number on the cover
of this manual.

technician. If the sensor fails calibration, have the sensor replaced by a quali-
fiedtechnician. Never use any source of ignition to test the accuracy of this
device.

must be understood by the operator that common sense and caution are fac-
tors which cannot be built into this product, but must be supplied by the opera-
tor.

Gas Detection
1. Charge batteries. Plug the Power Adapter cord plug into the Charger Adapter
Connectoronthe side of the unit.Then, plug the PowerAdapter into a110VAC
electrical outlet. Allow batteries to charge for 8 hours before using the Gas
Detector.
2. Warm-up Gas Detector.Slide the On/Off Switch to the On position and wait for
at least 10 seconds.
During thistime,All DetectionLEDswillfirstlight green,thenyellow, andfinally
red.
3. In an area with clean air, slowly adjust the Sensitivity Adjust Knob so as to light
the lower LED only.
4. Perform a sample test.In a safe area, place the unit no closer than four inches
fromaknowncombustiblegas(i.e.,cigarette lighter gas) and check the display
fora high reading.Then move the unit wheretheairisclear.Thereadingshould
go to low again.
5. Adjust direction and place the Gooseneck Gas Sensor in the room where the
atmosphere is to be tested.
Note:Gases that are heavier than air, such as propane, can be detected nearer the
floor.
The bar graph readout will show the gas concentration present in % of LEL
(lower explosive levels) and PPM (parts per million), as shown above.

Ifthegasconcentrationreaches or exceedsthepresetLow LimitWarningpoint
(500 PPM), the sound alarm will emit a tone, and the green LED will turn on.
If the gas concentration reaches or exceeds the preset Medium Limit Warning
point (10% LEL), the sound alarm will emit a higher tone, and the yellow LEDs
willturnon.
If the gas concentration reaches or exceeds the preset High LimitWarning, the
sound alarm will emit an emergency tone, and the red LEDs will turn on.
Warning:When the High LimitWarning alarm is displayed (all red LEDs),leave
the room immediately. Properly ventilate the area before reentering.
6. After leaving the test area, slide the On/Off Switch to the Off position.
Maintenance
1. RechargebatterieswhentheLOW BATLED lights.Chargemonthly,whether
the unit is used or not.If after recharging the batteries, the LOW BAT LED is
still displayed, replace the batteries with new ones of the same type.Refer to
the Specifications.
2. If the unit is not functioning, repeat the Gas Detection procedures as
described on page 5.
3. If the unit is still not detecting properly, have a qualified technician calibrate
the unit, or have the technician replace the sensor with the extra supplied
sensor.
4. Do not expose the unit to high concentrations of gas for long periods.This will
shorten the life of the sensor.
5. Do not store or use the Gas Detector in an area when corrosive gases are
present.
