Overview 1-
The Ciena Service Delivery Switch (SDS) product family provides Ethernet
connectivity to buildings and residences to deliver high-speed voice, video,
and data connectivity. SDS devices are designed to lower the overall cost of
building out a fiber network. These edge devices are then connected to
Service Aggregation Switch (SAS) products which aggregate and distribute
traffic to and from various points of the network. The 3902 Service Delivery
Switch is an entry-level business demarcation device in the Ciena SDS
portfolio.The3902canprovidelow-costEthernetPrivateLine(EPL),Ethernet
Virtual Private Line (EVPL), and EthernetLAN services. It can be deployed in
office, Point of Presence (POP), and Central Office (CO) locations.
The 3902 is a small and quiet unit suitable for installation in indoor

For a procedure see “Installing an SFP” on page 2-9.
Installing the Interface Cabling
The 3902 uses two different types of interface cables:
• Fiber Optic Cable — used in an optical SFP on the Gigabit Ethernet port.
• Ethernet Cable — used in a copper SFP on the Gigabit Ethernet port, in
the 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet port and in the Console port.
Fiber Optic Cable
The 1G SFP port on the 3902 uses a pluggable optic. Using a pluggable for
this port allows you to select the port speed, wavelength, etc. to match the
device at the terminating end. See “Installing the SFP” on page 2-4 for more
information about the transceivers, and their installation.
Most SFP ports will require optical cables. You will need to know the
specification of the optic to select the appropriate cable.
Note: Donotremove thedust coversfromthe SFPoptic andopticalcable
until immediately prior to mating the connectors.
See “Gigabit Ethernet Port LED” on page 4-3 for LED information.

• 1G Port when a copper SFP is installed
To install an Ethernet cable, insert the connector into the port on the device
until you hear a clicking sound. Insert the tail end of the cable into the port on
the terminating device.
Initial configuration
Two different methods can be used to assign an IP address to the device:
• using a DHCP server to automatically assign an IP address
(recommended)
• configuring an IP address manually.
Both methods are accomplished through the CLI and are not described inthis
document. For detailed instructions, see 39XX/51XX Configuration.
Note: If the device has not been assigned an IP address (either manually
or through a DHCP server) other than the default IP address,
communication can only take place through the console port. Initial IP
configuration must be done using the console port.
CAUTION
Use caution when setting the IP address or subnet mask, the
new value takes effect immediately. If information is set that is
inconsistent with network settings, communication to the
device may no longer be possible. If all other troubleshooting
methods have been exhausted, recovery may be possible
using the Reset button.
