•Amber—The system is in a degraded operational state. For
example:
◦Power supply redundancy is lost.
◦On-board current and voltage warning.
◦Cartridge fault.
◦At least one drive in a RAID configuration failed.
•Amber, blinking—The system is in a critical fault state. For
example:
◦Boot failed.
◦Fatal CPU and/or bus error is detected.
◦System is in an over-temperature condition.

•Green—All fan modules are operating properly.
•Amber—One or more fan sensors have exceeded a warning
threshold.
•Amber, blinking—One or more fan sensors have exceeded a
critical threshold.

Rear Panel LEDs

•Off—There is no hard drive in the hard drive tray (no access, no fault).
•Green—The hard drive is ready.
•Green, blinking—The hard drive is reading or writing data.

•Off—The power supply is operating properly.
•Amber, blinking—An event warning threshold has been reached, but the
power supply continues to operate.
•Amber—A critical fault threshold has been reached, causing the power
supply to shut down.

•Green—The power supply is operating properly and supplying DC power
to the system.
•Green, blinking—The power supply is off and it is in cold redundancy
mode.

If amber is off, the established link has no activity or activity is below the
minimum threshold.
Amber blinks at three different rates to indicate the traffic rate (slow,
medium, or fast).
When using 4x10G breakout cables, any one link of the four activates
the LEDs in the manner described. Additional links are not
differentiated.

Rear Panel LEDs

•Off—No link or no QSFP.
•Green—Link established.
•Green + amber, blinking—Green indicates that the link is established and
amber indicates activity on the link.
If amber is off, the established link has no activity or activity is below the
minimum threshold.

Preparing for System Component Replacement
This section describes how to prepare for component replacement, and it includes the following topics:

Powering Off the System
You can invoke a graceful shutdown.
Procedure
Step 1 Press and release the front-panel power button.

Preparing for System Component Replacement

The chassis shuts down to standby power state, indicated when the power LED turns amber.
Step 2 Disconnect the power cords from all power supplies in your system to completely remove AC power from
the system.
To completely remove all power from the system, you must disconnect all power cords from all
power supplies.
Caution
Powering On the System
When you plug power cords into the power supplies and connect to power, the system powers on to standby
power mode. The front panel power button/LED lights amber. Power is supplied only to the server node
service processor and the cooling fans.
Press and release the power button to boot the system to main power mode, which is indicated when the power
button/LED lights green.
Chassis Cover Removal
This system has a single top cover. Opening this cover gives access to the internal compartment that includes
the fan modules.

Powering On the System

Procedure
Step 1 Ensure the cover latch locking mechanism is turned counterclockwise to the unlocked position.
Step 2 Lift the cover latch to disengage.
Step 3 Slide cover toward rear of the chasses to remove.

Cisco UCS M142 Compute Cartridge Replacement
This section describes how to replace a compute cartridge.
This system supports up to eight single-wide compute cartridges or up to four double-wide cartridges. You
can mix single-wide and double-wide cartridges in the same chassis, but a double-wide cartridge cannot install
into two slots that straddle the center chassis divider.

Procedure
Step 1 Slide the cartridge locking mechanism toward the right.
Step 2 Open the cartridge lever to disengage.
Step 3 Slide the cartridge out of chassis.

Step 4 To install a cartridge, align the cartridge with an empty bay (or bays for a double-wide cartridge).
Step 5 Carefully slide the cartridge into the bay until its rear connector is engaged with the backplane.
Step 6 Close the cartridge lever to lock the cartridge into the chassis.

Internal RTC Battery Replacement
This section describes the replacement of the internal RTC battery.
There is the danger of explosion if the battery is replaced incorrectly. Replace the battery only with the
same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacture. Dispose of used batteries according to the
manufacturer's instructions. Statement 1015
Warning
When replacing RTC battery, only use your fingers. Never use metal tools which can damage the battery.Warning
The real-time clock (RTC) battery retains time/date and boot settings when the server is disconnected from
power. No user actions are required after you replace the battery and restore power. The system automatically
synchs with UCS Manager.
The battery type is CR2032. Cisco supports the industry-standard CR2032 battery, which can be purchased
from most electronic stores.
Procedure
Step 1 Power off the chassis and remove power cords from all power supplies.
Step 2 Remove the top cover from the chassis.
Step 3 Locate the RTC battery in its vertical holder on the motherboard.
Step 4 Remove the RTC battery. Using your fingers, gently remove the battery from the retaining clip.
Step 5 Replace the RTC battery. Using your fingers, gently insert the battery into its holder.
The flat, positive side of the battery marked with "+" must face the retaining clip.

PCIe Adapter Card Replacement

Procedure
Step 1 Power off the chassis and remove power cords from all power supplies.
Step 2 Remove the top cover from the chassis.
Step 3 Remove an existing PCIe card:
a) Open the retainer that sits over the top of the PCIe slot. Hinge the retainer open until it is clear of the PCIe
card.
b) Pull evenly on both ends of the PCI card to remove it from the socket on the motherboard.
Step 4 Install the new PCIe card:
a) Align the new PCIe card with the empty socket on the motherboard and the rear panel opening.
b) Carefully push down on both ends of the PCIe card to fully engage its circuit board connector with the
socket on the motherboard.

c) Close the retainer that sits over the top of the PCIe card.
Step 5 Replace the top cover to the chassis.

PCIe Adapter Card Replacement

RAID Controller Card Replacement
This section describes the replacement of the internal RAID controller card.
Only Cisco supported RAID controller cards can be used for replacement.Note
Procedure
Step 1 Power off the chassis and remove power cords from all power supplies.
Step 2 Remove the top cover from the chassis.
Step 3 Remove a RAID controller card:
a) Disconnect the RAID battery and SAS cables at the cable connection points.
b) Using your fingers, gently lift straight up on both ends of the RAID controller card to disengage it from
the socket on the motherboard.
Step 4 Install the new RAID controller card:
a) Position the RAID controller card over its socket on the motherboard and over the alignment features.
b) Carefully push down on both ends of the RAID controller card to fully engage its circuit board connector
with the socket on the motherboard.
c) Connect the RAID battery and SAS cables at the cable connection points.
The cable from the rear drive backplane (item 4 in the following figure) must connect to the lower
connector on the RAID controller card. The cable from the front of the server connects to the
upper connector on the RAID controller card.

Drive Replacement
This section describes the replacement of a solid state drive (SSD) or hard disk drive (HDD).
Observe these drive population guidelines for optimum performance:
•When populating drives, add drives to the lowest-numbered bays first.
•Keep an empty drive blanking tray in any unused bays to ensure proper air flow.

Drive Replacement

You do not have to shut down or power off the server to replace drives because they are hot-pluggable.Tip
Procedure
Step 1 Remove the drive:
a) Press the drive tray release button. The release lever pops up.
b) Pull the ejector lever to disengage and remove the drive from the bay.
Step 2 Install a new drive:
a) With the ejector lever open, insert the drive into the empty drive bay.
b) Push the tray into the bay until it touches the backplane, and then close the ejector lever to lock the drive
in place.

Fan Module Replacement
You do not have to shut down or power off the server to replace fan modules because the are hot-swappable.

Fan Module Replacement

Remove only one fan module while the system is operating. Removing more than one fan module could
cause overheating. To maintain proper cooling, do not operate the server for more than one minute with
any fan module removed.
Caution
Procedure
Step 1 Remove the top cover from the chassis.
Step 2 Remove a fan module:
a) Place thumb and index finger into the release latches on the fan module.
b) Gently squeeze the latches to disengage the fan module.
c) Slide the fan module straight up and out of the chassis.
Step 3 Install a new fan Module
a) Set the new fan module in place, aligning the connector on the bottom of the fan module with the connector
on the motherboard
b) Press down gently on the fan module until the latch clicks and locks in place.
Step 4 Replace the top cover to the chassis.
