3 Description of RADIUS SL PLUS
Meaning of the information symbols:
Attention:
In this operating manual, points concerning your safety are marked with this symbol. Observe
the instructions and pass on all safety instructions to other users!
Note:
This symbol indicates special additional information. Observe the notes and pass on all
information to other users!
3.1 General description and intended use
CLEMENS RADIUS SL PLUS mainly consists of the following assemblies:
Basic body with hose guide
Mounting for shaft unit or driven tool
Control valve
Control unit
Swivel cylinder
Spring unit
The RADIUS is attached with clamping straps to a standard spar of the corresponding mounting bracket, lifter,
mounting frame, etc.
The operating principle of the RADIUS is based on a control valve supplied by the tractor hydraulics providing oil
to the swivel cylinder. The blade share is turned outwards while driving up towards the vine. When the sensor rod
touches the vine, the control valve is actuated and the oil flow to the swivel cylinder is interrupted. The blade share
pivots inwards supported by spring force and thus avoids the vine. Once the pressure on the sensor rod has been
relieved, the swivel cylinder is again supplied with oil and the blade share swivels back to its initial position.

3.3 Mounting options - Mounting heights - Working depth
In principle, the RADIUS units can be mounted on the tractor in the front and rear as well as in the inter axle
area.
3.3.1 Rear mounting
Rear mounting is the most uncomplicated mounting option. The RADIUS units can be mounted 1 or 2 sided when
mounted on cultivators. For two-sided operation, a flow divider with return oil manifold is required.
The mounting height of the RADIUS units depends on the tools used on the cultivator. The RADIUS tools should
run a little higher than the cultivator’s. The tools which are mounted in front of the RADIUS shaft (Figure 3, item
5) should run 20 mm (1”) deeper than the RADIUS blade share (Item 6).
3.3.2 Mid-mounting with column lifter
For the column lifters type S2R and S5, the mounting tube or the square peg with connection tube is attached to
the tractor so that a working depth of 20-120 mm (1” to 5“) is achieved.
To determine the mounting height on the tractor, the column lifter, complete with RADIUS, is placed flat on the
ground. The hydraulic cylinder must be extended by 120 mm (5”). In this extended position the mounting height
is measured and determined. It varies even with the same tractor type, as it depends on the respective tires. The
column lifter has a stroke of 500 mm (19.5”). Make sure that the front mounted optional tools in front of the RADIUS
shaft (, Item 5) are mounted 20 mm (1”) lower than the RADIUS blade share (Item 6). Please check that there is
sufficient safety clearance when mid- or front-mounting:
a) with the front wheel turned inwards (Figure 3, item 7) from the implement to the wheel and from the RADIUS
blade share to the rear wheel.
b) to the brake pedal with the unit swiveled in and lifted.
c) Furthermore, when mounting the RADIUS on the column lifter, there should be enough clearance between
the support wheel and the RADIUS so that trouble-free working with disc plow and disc coulter is possible.
d) The best locating for the plant to touch the sensor rod is 5 cm (2“) from the outer end of the rod (Figure 2,
item 8).

RADIUS SL PLUS 03.2019 en 8
3.4 RADIUS front-mounted, double sided
1. The frame width for front attachment depends on the row width as well as on the share length used. This
results in the following:
a) Share length 370 mm: Frame width (A) = Row width (B) –650 mm (25.6”)
b) Share length 500 mm: Frame width (A) = Row width (B) –910 mm (35.8”)
c) Share length 620 mm: Frame width (A) = Row width (B) –1150 mm (45.3”)
Figure 4 Attachment two-sided front
2. Please determine the mounting height of the front column lifter as described in section 3.3.2 „Mid-mounting
with column lifter“. The column lifter S-2R front is single-acting and has a stroke of 500 mm (19.7”). On request,
the lifter can also be supplied with a double-acting cylinder
3. The mounting bracket CL759.270000 (Figure 4, item 48) is equipped with a pendulum compensation.
4. If you drive mostly on hillsides mount the frame a little deeper than normal, in order to ensure that the RADIUS
tools will have contact with the soil when you enter the row which is headed down a steep slope. Experience
showed that a working depth of 110 mm (4.3”) is best. That means that while mounting the device, the hydraulic
cylinder should be extended 130 mm (5.1”). (Device completely mounted and placed on level ground).
3.5 Support wheels for height guidance
In order to achieve an optimum working result, it is advisable to use
support wheels with most attachment combinations. The support wheels
are used to guide the height of your attached tools, enabling the ground
contour to be accurately traced. Depending on the application, you can
choose between a manually or hydraulically adjustable support wheel.

5.2 Hydraulic installation
Check that the hydraulic connections fit your tractor. There are two hoses leading to the RADIUS SL PLUS as
pressure/return lines which must not be confused. RADIUS one-sided: Pressure hose nominal size 8 mm (0.3”)
and return hose nominal size 13 mm (0.5”).
RADIUS two-sided: from flow divider to tractor pressure hose nominal size 10 mm (0.4”) and return hose nominal
size 16 mm (0.6”).
Attention:
As soon as the oil supply is switched on, the RADIUS blade share moves outwards. This is
particularly important when the unit is lifted, as it may cause injury. The unit should only be
switched on at the place of use, please keep your distance!
5.2.1 Hose installation
The hydraulic hoses are connected according to Figure 8 and Figure 9 . “D“ means pressure inlet, “T“ means tank
and “Z“ connection to the cylinder.

For road travel, the machine/attachment is set so that its space consumption is minimal. Further settings must be
made in such a way that road traffic is not obstructed. The traffic regulations must be observed.
When driving on the road, the machine/attachment must be switched off.
In order to avoid traffic obstructions, all attachments and working implements as well as the tractor should be
freed from larger impurities which could come loose during road travel.
6.2 Operating and adjusting the machine
Attention:
When leaving the tractor for mounting, dismounting and making adjustments always switch
off the drive and engine.
Remove ignition key!
Secure the tractor and machine against unintentional movements (e.g. rolling away, lowering,
etc.).
Observe the relevant accident prevention regulations and all other information given in the
operating instructions!
When attaching or removing implements to the tractor do not step between tractor and
implement!
6.2.1 General indications
The swivelling range of the RADIUS blade share is infinitely variable between 0 and 90 degrees.
The blade share with sensor rod is available in sizes 370 mm (14.5”), 500 mm (20”) and 620 mm (24”).
The driving speed should be 4 -1 0 km/h (2.5 - 6.2 mph) depending on soil conditions and culture.
The RADIUS units are available with electromagnetic manual control with pressure relief valve (optional for one-
sided manual control This enables to adjust the pressure of the blade share from 0-180 bar (0 –2611 psi),
depending on the soil conditions. When the manual control is actuated, the system is depressurized and the
RADIUS blade share pivots in.
The RADIUS operates via a single-acting hydraulic valve.
a) required oil quantity for one-sided operation: 6 –10 l/min (1.5 –2.6 gpm)
b) required oil quantity for two-sided operation: (3.0 –5.2 gpm) (flow divider is necessary)
The return flow of the oil should always be guided pressureless (best by means of 15 mm (0.6”) pipe
diameter) back into the tank. It must be ensured that the oil is delivered into the tank below the oil level (see
Figure 10). The return hose should have at least nominal diameter 13 mm (0.5”) for one-sided operation and at
least nominal diameter 16 mm (0.63”) for two-sided operation from the collective return.
Ensure that the oil is filtered at one point in the circuit. It is advisable to do this in the suction line so that there is
no backflow in the return line (see Figure 10).

Figure 10 Return into the tank
Attention:
As soon as the oil supply is switched on, the RADIUS blade share moves outwards. This is
particularly important when the unit is lifted, as it may cause injury. The unit should only be
switched on at the place of use, please keep your distance!
6.2.2 De-aeration
a) The units are vented with the oil flow is switched on. All valve levers connected to the RADIUS units should
be placed in the operating position for some time. Move the sensor rod and thus also the device by hand. Now
the system deareates automatically.
b) After the hydraulic system has been vented and filled with the hydraulic oil, it is necessary to check the oil level
of the tractor's hydraulic system and, if necessary, top up with oil.
6.2.3 Adjustment - setting at the factory
Figure 11 Sensor rod end stop inwards
Figure 12 Sensor rod end stop outwards
The devices are precisely adjusted and tested at the factory. If the setting should have changed in the course of
time, the device must be reset as follows:

6.2.3.1 Adjustment without hydraulic pressure to the unit
a) Sensor rod end stop inwards (Figure 11):
The purpose of this setting is to prevent the valve piston from being pressed in too deeply, thereby damaging
the valve bottom.
Loosen the counternut (item 1) and turn the screw (item 2) with its head towards the support (item 3); if you
now press the sensor rod unit inwards, the end stop (item 4) must not touch the screw head (item 2). Hold the
sensor rod unit pressed in firmly and turn the screw (item 2) in the direction of the end stop (item 4). When the
head of the screw (item 2) touches the end stop (item 4), turn it another half turn. This ensures that the piston
of the valve does not touch the valve bottom. Tighten the counternut (item 1).
b) Sensor rod end stop outwards (Figure 12):
This setting is used to position the sensor unit so that the pressure section (item 5) just comes into contact
with the valve piston (item 6) in the rest position of the device. Loosen the counternut (item 7) and turn the
screw (item 8) inwards so that there is play between item 5 and item 6. Check whether the valve piston (item
6) is smooth-running and fully extended. Now turn the screw (item 8) back so that the play between item 5 and
item 5 is just eliminated. Tighten the counternut (item 7).
6.2.3.2 Adjustment with hydraulic pressure to the unit (stroke limitation)
Move the RADIUS blade share to the working position. In this position, the blade share must be able to move
forward by 5 mm (1/5”) if you press forward from the rear at the outer end. This play is necessary to keep some
distance between the piston rod of the cylinder and the cylinder bushing.
If this clearance is not present, adjust it using the set screw
(Figure 13, item 1) located in the stop of the bearing housing.
First loosen the counternut (Figure 13, item 2) and then adjust
the setscrew so that there is a clearance of 5 mm. Then
retighten the counternut (item 2).
6.2.4 Adjustments –tool change –add-on tools
6.2.4.1 Adjustment of the sensor rod
The setting of the sensor rod is simple and fast: Lift the button on the sensor unit
slightly and then move the sensor rod forwards or backwards in the desired
direction. When driving uphill, it is advantageous to position the sensor rod slightly
in front of the blade share. The same applies if the plants have grown at an angle
(inclined forwards) or if the forward speed is higher than 8 km/h (5mph). The sensor
rod height can be adjusted via the screw and counternut on the clamping piece.

6.2.5 Working in strong weeds
Figure 15 Tension spring for strong weeds
If the sensor rod is already pushed backwards by strong
weeds, the sensitivity of the sensor unit can be reduced by
inserting a spring CW009.020600 (Figure 15, item 1). Place
the spring between the hook (item 2) and the adjusting screw
(item 3).
6.2.6 Changing the blade share
If the RADIUS blade shares are worn out, they should be replaced in good time. To do this, loosen the screw
(Figure 16, item 1) from the RADIUS shaft and clean the matching surface (serrated disc Figure 16, item 2). Place
the new blade share (Figure 16, item 3) on the serrated disc and tighten the screw with washer (Figure 16, item
1 and item 4) firmly. (Tightening torque 190 Nm)
Figure 16 Changing the blade share
6.2.7 Front engaging tools for RADIUS SL PLUS
As a general rule, the RADIUS units should only be operated with front engaging tools (see chapter 3.3). These
tools should generally run 20 mm (0.8”) deeper than the RADIUS blade share in order to protect the shaft from
stones etc. (Figure 3)
CLEMENS offers various front tools for a large variety of soil conditions. The
grubber share, for example, is excellently suited to ripping the soil thoroughly
and deeply. In greened plantations, either the oscillating disc colter (Figure 17)
or the disc plow is used.
The oscillating disc colter cuts a clean edge on the vegetation. The disc
plow, on the other hand, can also be adjusted for slightly hilling up or plowing
back. For stronger hilling up and ploughing back work CLEMENS offers the
clearing body LW1.

6.2.8 Add-on tool: Driven Disks
The Driven Disks loosen the soil around the plant stems and transport it away from them. The resulting deepening
leads the surface water and nutrients faster to the roots. Weeds and vegetation around the trunk and in the vine
row are additionally disturbed.
Figure 18 Driven Disks
Figure 19 Trailing position
In general, the driven discs are operated in the trailing position (see section 6.2.11, Drawing cut (trailing position))
of the RADIUS SL PLUS. For this purpose, the control unit has to be adjusted by one position forward. (see
section 6.2.4.1, Adjustment of the sensor rod). The preload force of the spring must also be increased (see section
6.2.12).
The disk unit can be inclined to lower the second disc relatively to the first. This serves to penetrate deeper into
the ground, to raise the motor to protect it in the presence of large stones, or to facilitate the work of the first disc
and to retrieve the machine on heavy soils.
Figure 20 Direction of rotation of the disks
Under no circumstances may the rotating disks be gripped.
There is a risk of cutting edges!
Figure 21 Inclination angle
The angle of inclination and thus the working depth is adjusted by means
of the fine serrated disk (Figure 21, item 1) by loosening the screw
connection (item 2).
For the operation of the Driven Disks, an additional single-acting hydraulic connection (approx. 20 liters/minute (5
gal/min) = single-sided/double-sided operation, connected in series) and an unpressurised return connection are
required (suitable sensor rod, hydraulic installation see chapter 10 Spare parts list and optional parts).
