GENERAL
The CH150-14 TETRA S ngle Head Controller s a Control and D splay Un t (CDU)
that s des gned to control d g tal TETRA transce vers type 7-450-14-XX or 7-450-
15-XX. The un t offers a graph cal d splay, an alphanumer c keypad and var ous
funct on or menu keys. It features a programm ng connector, a l ght sensor, and
an LED on the faceplate.
The CH150-14 s su table for NVIS operat ons.
The TETRA rad os are based on SEPURA SRG3900 Ser es transce vers and must be
setup to operate on the appropr ate networks and ut l ze, where ava lable, spec f c
ground transm tters w th an nstalled aero capab l ty.
It s assumed that the user w ll be fully conversant w th the use of a TETRA
system, the system spec f c names, t tles, abbrev at ons and descr pt ons.
1.1
INTRODUCTION
The CDU d splays text or graph cs on ts colour screen w th a v ewable area of
approx mately 285 x 240 p xels (approx mately 52 x 69 mm). Four menu keys
allow qu ck access to v tal menu tems.
The “M” key not only powers the un t on and off, but t also allows the user to
return d rectly to the top-level (or DUAL) screen at any t me, from anywhere
w th n the menu structure.
The emergency key “EMG” nvokes the TETRA emergency mode.
“Up”, “Down” and “Enter” keys allow s mple nav gat on and select on of l st tems.
In part cular, from the DUAL screen, the “Up” and “Down” keys allow the user to
enter the FULL screen for e ther of the connected rad os.
A h gh ntens ty backl ght source allows readab l ty of the d splay n all cond t ons.
A front panel sensor adjusts the backl ght ntens ty depend ng on the current
amb ent l ght level. A manual overr de funct on s prov ded. For n ght operat on,
the keys are backl t, (NVIS compat ble, green), w th the glow ntens ty be ng

Rad o Manager
The nbu lt Sepura rad os must be fully conf gured for the local networks us ng

by the Network Management Operat ons Team that supports the author ty. Team
members must be fully conversant w th the Sepura Rad o Manager Software and
the local TETRA network operat ng procedures.
1.2.1
Subscr ber Class
Th s system parameter s key to the successful operat on of an a rborne TETRA
rad o.
When an a r term nal loses a r cell coverage, t s allowed to use the ground cells,
but t w ll return to an a r cell as soon as poss ble. Th s s ach eved by
broadcast ng a r to ground subscr ber class support (e ther one of the “h ghly
preferred subscr ber classes (HPSC)”). If ground term nals are not allowed to use
a r cells, then they w ll not have a match ng subscr ber class prof le.
The a rborne rad os and the base stat ons that serve them should use the H ghly
Preferred Subscr ber Class 1 or 2. Th s w ll ensure that f a base stat on serv ng

MODES OF OPERATION AND CALL TYPES
The CH150 supports standard modes and call types as l sted below. The TETRA
user should fam l ar se themselves w th those ava lable on the r network and the r
appropr ate operat on.
2.1
Modes
The CH150 s capable of operat ng n any of the seven modes l sted below. The
user should be fam l ar w th each of these modes of operat on.
•Trunked Mode
•D rect Mode
•D rect Mode as a Repeater
•V a D rect Mode Repeater
•V a D rect Mode Gateway
•TalkGroup Locked by SwM
•D rect Mode Gateway
2.1.1
Trunked Mode
The CDU can be used to set the rad o to commun cate d rectly w th other TETRA
rad o term nals across a network. Th s s called Trunked Mode Operat on (TMO).
TMO s entered when the user selects a TMO TalkGroup from the TalkGroup Index
programmed nto the rad o (by Rad o Manager). The TalkGroup s selected us ng
the P ckl sts set up n the CDU; see sect on 9. Group calls are descr bed n
sect on 12.
In add t on, the CDU can place the rad o nto phone mode for person to person
calls across the PSTN/PABX and Po nt to Po nt (or Pr vate) calls. Phone mode
operat on s descr bed n sect on 13.
For further clar ty, Trunked Mode TalkGroup name tags w ll be nd cated n wh te.

2.1.2
D rect Mode
The CDU can be used to set the rad o to commun cate d rectly w th other TETRA
rad os w thout the use of a network. Th s s called D rect Mode Operat on (DMO).
DMO s entered when the user selects a DMO TalkGroup from the TalkGroup
Index programmed nto the rad o (by Rad o Manager). The TalkGroup s selected
us ng the P ckl sts set up n the CDU; see sect on 9. Group calls are descr bed n
sect on 12.
Note 1: To ensure that DMO s ava lable the rad o MUST be programmed w th
at least one DMO TalkGroup.
Note 2: Sw tch ng to D rect Mode Operat on means that commun cat on w th
the d spatcher and other users on the network s not poss ble, unless
they also sw tch to DMO and select the same group, or commun cate
through a D rect Mode Gateway.
Depend ng on nam ng convent ons adopted, the TalkGroup may or may not
nd cate the DMO status.
For further clar ty, D rect Mode TalkGroup name tags w ll be nd cated n yellow.
2.1.3
D rect Mode Gateway Operat on
D rect Mode Gateway operat on (or Gateway mode) s a l censed feature
The rad o nstalled w th the CH150-14 s equ pped w th the gateway capab l t es.
However, the system does not n t ally have Gateway mode enabled. Sw tch ng to
Gateway mode s descr bed n sect on 10.1.
A D rect Mode Gateway w ll l nk term nals operat ng n DMO w th users operat ng
on a TMO network. The Gateway w ll re-transm t nformat on rece ved on the
D rect Mode Interface to the Trunked Mode A r Interface.
To use the term nal as a Gateway, t must be attached to both a Trunked Mode
group and a D rect Mode group. The D rect Mode group must be selected once
the term nal has been set up to work n Gateway mode.
The CH150-14 s fully capable of operat ng n DMO and as a Gateway to allow
access to the network.
