Safety Warnings
Please observe any warnings and follow all instructions.

Introduction
TheCodexCaptureDriveUSBDockisthehubofyourle-basedworkow.Itcaneasilybe
conguredtoproduceafullsetofdeliverables–everythingyouneedforyourproductionand
post, from viewing copies to archives. It can provide them all in less time than traditional systems
take to make a single copy.
Installation
Important Note: DonotconnecttheUSBDocktoyourcomputeruntilyouhaveinstalledall
required software and restarted your computer.
Software
Go to codexdigital.com/software to register and download software. There are installation
instructions available from this webpage.
The software webpage is divided into sections. It is recommended to download the newest
version(atthetopofeachsection)ofeachrequiredsoftwarecomponentwhenrstinstallinga
system.TousetheUSBDockthefollowingsoftwarecomponentsmustbeinstalled:

Hardware
Afterinstallingthesoftwareandrestartingyourcomputer,connectpowertotheUSBDock.
ThenconnecttheUSBDocktoaUSB3.0portonyourcomputer.UseonlythesuppliedUSB3.0
cable and power supply.

Loading and Unloading Storage
ToloadtheCaptureDriveinsertitfullyintotheUSBDock.Itwillbeginloadingautomatically
andtheLEDwillashblue.WhenitisloadedtheLEDwillstopashing,andthistypicallytakes
around10-15seconds.
TounloadpresstheejectbuttonontheendoftheCaptureDrive.TheLEDwillashbluewhileit
unloads. When the LED is solid blue it is safe to remove the Capture Drive.
TheLEDonaCaptureDriveashesgreenwhenitisinuse.DonotunloadaCaptureDrivewhen
it is being read or written as this can compromise data integrity.
Using the USB Dock and Codex software
DisconnecttheUSBDockbeforestartingyourcomputer.Onceyourcomputerhasstartedthen
connecttheUSBcabletotheUSBDock.
It is recommended to go to codexdigital.com/support/media-stations for full documentation.
HereyoucandownloadguidesthatdescribeusingtheCodexsoftwareforcommonworkows
such as “Processing Canon Cinema RAW…” and “Processing ARRIRAW…” Other general guides
arealsoavailable,suchas:

AfterinstallingthesoftwaretheCodexServerandCodexUIshouldberunning.WhentheCodex
UIisopenedthe‘ConnectToServer’dialogwillspecifylocalhost.Thisiscorrect–simplyclick
the checkbox icon.

The Codex UI is divided into the MAIN, STORAGE, and SETUP tabs:
The MAIN tab is primarily used for editing shot metadata and creating reports.
The STORAGE tab is used for operations such as creating and deleting the Roll on the media.

Creating deliverable files using the Virtual File System (VFS)

yourCaptureDrive.Theselesareavailableinthe‘CodexVFS’driveontheDesktopofyourMac,
and can be copied from here to any attached storage.

LUTs and Burn-Ins
LUTandBurn-Inlesshouldbeplacedinthe/lutsand/burninsdirectoriesin/Library/Application
Support/Codex.
ApplyingLUTsusingtheVFSisdetailedintheVFSGuide.CompatibleLUTletypesarecovered
in the LUTs Guide.

Therearesomethirdpartysoftwarepackagesthatmaybeofuse:
• CalibratedMXF:allowsplaybackofMXFlesusingQuicktime.

butallprovideameansofviewingandplayingARRIRAW(.ari)lesnatively.

Troubleshooting
DuetothewayOSXhandlescertaindevices,iftheUSBDockisconnectedwhenyoustartthe
computertheUSBcanhang.IfthishappenssimplydisconnectandreconnecttheUSBcablein
thebackoftheUSBDock.
TheUSBDockhasaStatusLEDthatcanhelpwithtroubleshooting.Thetablebelowdescribes
themeaningofthedifferentStatusLEDmodes:
LED colour LED state Description Course of action
Blue Constant USB3.0 and Power is connected No action required
Green Constant USB2.0 and Power is connected Connect to a USB 3.0 port on your computer
Red Constant USB connected, but not Power. Capture Drive is not inserted. Connect Power
Red Flashing USB connected, but not Power. Capture Drive is inserted. Connect Power
Capture Drives also have an LED that shows the status and can help with troubleshooting.

Blue Flashing Capture Drive is loading or unloading Wait for loading/unloading to complete
Blue Constant Capture Drive is not loaded, and is safe to remove Remove or reload Capture Drive
