4.0 Warranty
Com‐PowerwarrantstoitsCustomersthattheproductsitmanufactureswillbefreefrom
defectsinmaterialsandworkmanshipforaperiodof3years.Thiswarrantyshallnotapplyto:
• Transportdamagesduringshipmentfromyourplant.
• Damagesduetopoorpackaging.
• Productsoperatedoutsidetheirspecifications.
• ProductsImproperlymaintainedormodified.
• Consumableitemssuchasfuses,powercords,cables,etc.
• Normalwear
• Calibration
• ProductsshippedoutsidetheUnitedStateswithoutthepriorknowlegeofCom‐
Power.
Inaddition,Com‐Powershallnotbeobligedtoprovideserviceunderthiswarrantytorepair
damageresultingfromattemptstoinstall,repair,serviceormodifytheinstrumentby
personnelotherthanCom‐Powerservicerepresentatives.
UndernocircumstancesdoesCom‐Powerrecognizeorassumeliabilityforanyloss,damage
orexpensearising,eitherdirectlyorindirectly,fromtheuseorhandlingofthisproduct,or
anyinabilitytousethisproductseperatelyorincombinationwithanyotherequipment.
Whenrequestingwarranty,calibrationorrepairservices,itisrecommendedthattheoriginal
packagingmaterialbeusedforshipping.Damageduetoimproperpackagingwillvoid
warranty.
Inthecaseofrepairorcomplaint,alabelshouldbeattachedtothehousingofthe
instrumentwhichdescribesbrieflythefaultsobserved.Pleaseincludethename,telephone

4.1Maintenance
Thisproductcontainsnouserreplaceablepartsotherthanthebattery.Iftheunitdoesnot
operateorneedscalibration,pleasecontactCom‐PowerCorporation.Donotremovethe
instrumentcover.Thebatteriescanbeaccessedfromthethebottomoftheunitifneeds
replacement.Anymodificationsorrepairsperformedontheunitbyanyoneotherthanan
authorizedfactorytrainedtechnicianwillvoidwarranty.
Theexteriorsurfacemaybecleanedwithmilddetergentandthenbewipedwithadry,clean,
lint‐freecloth.Usecaretoavoidanyliquidsorforeignobjectsenteringthechassis.

5.1Application
Com‐PowerCGO‐5100BCombGeneratorisdesignedspecificallyforEMISiteverificationtesting
upto18GHz.TheCGO‐5100Bhashigherfrequencystabilityof5ppmenhancingtheaccuracyof
frequencyoutput.
ACombGeneratorsprovidethefundamentalandharmonicsofthestepfrequency.TheCGO‐
5100BCombGeneratorgeneratesfrequenciesin100MHzsteps.Thefundamentalfrequencyof
100MHzandallharmonicsupto18GHzarepresentattheoutputassoonasthepowerswitch
isturnedon.Forexample,ifviewedwithaspectrumanalyzerorEMIreceiver,theoutput
harmonics100,200,300MHzetc.canbeseen.Ithasacircularchassisforimprovedomni‐
directionalsignalradiation.
EMCtestlaboratoriesuseOpenAreaTestSitesorAnechoicchambersforEMIradiated
emissionstesting.Thesetestsitesareconstructedwithspecificrequirementsandarecalibrated
inaprecisemannertooptimizethereliabilityofthemeasuredemissions.Thetimeandexpense
incurredisconsideredessentialtoincreasetherepeatabilityofthedatatakenonthesesites.
Thedatatakenonthesecalibratedsitesaregenerallyreliable.However,insomeinstances,
discrepanciesdooccur,andthereliabilityofdataisquestionable.Suchdiscrepanciescouldbe
discoveredwheneither(a)datafromtwotestsitesforthesameequipmentdonotmatch,or(b)
thedatafromtwodifferentoccasionsforthesameequipmentatthesamesitesarenot
consistent.
Itisimportanttofindthecauseforsuchinconsistency.However,thisisgenerallyverytime
consuminganddifficultbecausethereasoncouldbeoneoffourcomplexfactors.Thatincludes
theequipmentundertest(EUT),site,testinstrumentationandtestpersonnel.Eachofthese
factorsmayhavemanypossiblecauses.TheEUT,forexample,mayhavechangeddueto
componentvariation,temperature,operatingmode,wearandtear,designetc.Thetestsite
maybeacauseduetoareflectiveobjectnearthesite,variationofgroundsaturationor
ambientsignalpresence.Italsocouldbeduetomalfunctioningtestinstrumentation.The
burdenoffindingandavoidingsuchasituationalwaysfallsonthetestpersonnel.
Itisessentialtoknowifandwhenaproblemoccurs,aswellastheexactreasoncausingthe
problem.TheCombGeneratorcanhelpintheprocesstodeterminethecausesofthe
problems.

5.1.1OperatingProcedures
MeasuretheemissionsfromtheCombGeneratoratafewstandardfrequenciesandrecordthe
levelsinadailylogpriortostartingaradiatedemissionstest.
• SetuptheCombGeneratoratthetestsitewiththeappropriateantenna.Theremaybe
somevariationathigherfrequencysoconsistentlyusingthesamedirectionminimizes
thevariationduetodirection.Forconvenience,theCombGeneratorhasanglemarkings
onthetop.
• Takemeasurementatdiscretefrequenciessuchas1GHz,2GHz,5GHz,10GHz,12GHz,
15GHz,18GHz,etc.Recordthisinthedailylog.
• Comparethisdatawiththedailylogofpriorreadingstomakesurethatthepattern
doesnothaveabruptchangesfromtheestablisheddailylogatanyfrequency.
Thisdailylogisusedtodetectanytestequipmentortestsiterelatedproblemasdescribed
below.
5.1.2ProblemsRelatedtoTestEquipment
VariationonthedailylogoftheCombGeneratoroutputdataisdependentonthetest
equipmentaswellastestsite.TheCombGeneratorreplacestheEUT.TheCombGeneratornot
onlygeneratestheoutputsimultaneouslyatalltheharmonics,andhasveryhighoutput
amplitudestability.Thisisachievedbyutilizingastabilizedsignalcircuitaswellasgeometryof
theradiator.
WiththevariationsduetotheEUTpracticallyeliminated,onlyvariationsremainingaredueto
otherfactors,mainlythetestinstrumentationandthetestsite.Thevariationduetotest
instrumentationislimitedtothesumtotalofthetoleranceonalltestequipmentused
(spectrumanalyzer,antenna,CombGenerator,cables).Afewdaysofdatawillestablishthe
rangeofvariationtobeexpectedatasite.Variationoflessthan+3dBisusuallyconsidered
normal.Anyvariationinthereadingsabovenormalindicatesapotentialproblem.
Logestablishedoveraperiodoftimecanbeusedtodetectpotentialproblemswith
measurements,sothatitcanbepromptlyinvestigated.

Theaboveprocedurecannotdistinguishtheproblemsrelatedtoatestsite.TheComb
Generatorcanbeusedintwowaystodetectanyproblemwithatestsite.Onemethodisto
startthedailylogimmediatelyaftertheTESTSITEiscalibrated.Thisway,oneiscertainabout
thevalidityoftheTESTSITE.ThesecondmethodistocalibratetheCombGeneratorradiated
outputasabsoluteemissionlevel.SuchcalibrationisprovidedasanoptionwiththeComb
Generators.
Inaddition,whendifficultyariseswithanyEUTdatatakenattwodifferentsites,theComb
Generatorcanbeusedtodetermineifbothsitesgivereliableresults,justbycomparingthedata
atthetwositeswiththeCombGenerator.Inthiscase,ifthetwositesdonotproduce
comparableresults,thesitewithdatamatchingclosesttotheCombGenerator’sabsolute
emissionlevelcanbeconsideredmorereliable.
5.1.4ProblemsRelatedtoTestPersonnel
TheCombGeneratorcannotdirectlyhelptoeliminatethetestpersonnelrelatedproblems.
However,byincreasingtheconfidencelevelandestablishingdefiniteproceduresforeliminating
testsiteandequipmentrelatedproblemsithelpstremendouslyinreducingtheproblems
relatedtoEMImeasurements.

ThereplaceablebatterypackcanbeaccessedfromthebottomoftheCombGenerator.Six
screwssecurethecovertothebatterycompartment.Pleasechargethenewbatteriesbefore
firstusetomaximizeoperatingtimeoftheCombGenerator.
5.5TroubleshootingCommonproblems
Problem:NoOutput.
A:MakesurethepowerswitchisonandthegreenLEDislit.
• Makesurethebatterylowindicatorisnoton.Checkalltheinterconnecting
cables,adaptersandconnectorsfromthereceivingantennatothereceiver.
Checktheoperationofthereceiverandpreamplifier.
• Reduceresolutionbandwidthandmeasurementspanofthereceivertoseeif
youcanseethesignalabovethenoisefloorofyourreceiver.
Problem:Batterylowindicatorremainslitevenafterchargingformorethan5/6hours.
A:Thebatterymayneedtobereplaced.However,beforeyoureplacethebatteryperformthe
followingsteps
• Makesurethebatteryterminalsareproperlyconnectedtothebatterysocketin
theCombGenerator.MakesureyouarechargingCombGeneratoronlywith
suppliedadapter.
• Checkthechargingadaptertomakesureitissupplyingthepropervoltage.The
unloaded(withoutconnectingittotheCombGenerator)voltagemeasuredat
thechargeroutputjackshouldbeatleast7.5VdctoproperlychargetheComb
Generatorbatteries.Ifthechargingadapterisnotproducingthepropervoltage
replacetheadapter,otherwisereplacebatteryandtrychargingitagain.
