1. Introduction
The 512DCi is IP enabled door controller which allows the PAC Access Central software to
communicate and allow or deny access to the doors. The 512DCi can control 2 doors both with read in
or read out if required. Further 512DC controllers can be connected to the 512DCi through the use of
the RS-485 data bus line.
Important Note:
The 512DCi differs slightly from the 512MkII, please follow these instructions carefully to get the
controller online and working correctly.
The 512DCi must be connected to an ethernet network, it cannot be used in a bus of door controllers
and connected on the RS-485 data bus only.
2. IP Addressing
There are two types of IP address the 512DCi can work with, these are DHCP IP addresses and Static
IP addresses. These are explained below:
•Reserved DHCP IP Address (Recommended) – When the controller is plugged into a
customers’ network, the controller requests an IP address from the DHCP Server to allow it to
communicate over the network to the Access Control software
•Static IP Address – The controller is set with an IP Address by the installing company that is
provided by the customers’ IT Department prior to installation
•.
Important Note:
The recommended way for the controller to get an IP address it to be an automatically assigned
‘Reserved DHCP Address’ this means that when the controller is first seen on the IP network and
identifies itself the DHCP server gives it an IP address that will never change.
3. Out of the Box IP Settings
When the controller is new out of the box it is set by default to DHCP, this means that the controller
when first powered up will ask the IP network for an IP address.
4. Resetting the 512DCi
It is good practice to reset the 512DCi when new out of the box, this will ensure a smooth operation
when programming the unit.

To perform a reset:
1. Hold down the One Touch button while first powering the unit
2. Keep your finger on the One-Touch button for 10 seconds
3. Release the One Touch button
The unit is now fully reset and in DHCP mode ready to accept a DHCP generated IP address or a static
IP address from the Access Central software.
5. Programming a Reserved DHCP Address (recommended)
It is recommended to ensure reliable communications that the controller uses a reserved DHCP IP
address. If the controller is placed on a network where only static addresses are possible, please see
further down this document which provide instructions on programming a controller with a static IP
address.
Before the controller is powered up the installer should contact the customers IT department and
request a ‘Reserved DHCP Address’. The customers IT department will require from the installer the
MAC Address of the controller, this is provided with the controller on a sticker as shown in the example
below:
This number is unique to every network device in the world!
Once the IT department have the MAC address, they will then advise of the IP address, Subnet and
Gateway address if required to allow this to be programmed into Access Central.
As the door controller comes out of the box set to accept a DHCP address once the controller is
powered up and plugged into the network, the controller can be programmed in the access software
and communications should be established.

6. Programming a Static IP Address
The 512DCi differs slightly from the 512IP MKII, these instructions must be followed to get correct
communications between the access software and the controller if using the door controller with a static
address.
When programming the door controller in Access Central the controller must have the gateway set the
same as the Access Central PC, please follow the instructions below on how to achieve this.
The controller can be programmed with a laptop loaded with a free version of Access Central prior to
attaching to the network if the main access system is on a subnet different to the access control
software.
Important Note:
If The controller cannot obtain a DHCP address from the network, the controller has a default IP
address of 169.254.10.5. Do not plug the controller on to the network with other new 512DCi’s until the
IP address has been modified. Or this will cause issues with all the controllers having the same IP
address.
7. Work Required: Access Controller on same network
(subnet) as Access Central
1. Modify the IP address of your laptop to be in the subnet as the door controller, i.e.
169.254.10.1
2. Power up the 512DCi while performing a reset (as detailed above).
3. Connect the door controller to the network by plugging in the ethernet cable or connect directly
to your laptop using the ethernet cable.
4. Run the Access Central software and login as the installer.
5. Select Tools/ Launch External Tools/ Configure Device IP Addresses.
6. The IP Device Address Configuration Utility will automatically search for door controllers on the
network.

7. Select the second tab ‘PAC IP Controllers’ you should see the door controller listed as
169.254.10.5 as shown in the example below:
8. Right click on the controller and select
9. Select the radial button that shows ‘Use the following IP address’ and add the IP address,
subnet mask and default gateway making sure the default gateway address is the IP address
of the access central PC, click ok once this is complete. As shown in the example below:
10. The following box will appear, click ‘Yes’

11. The screen will now show, click ‘OK’
12. The IP Address Configuration Utility will now show the settings that were just added, the IP
address is shown in red as this has been programmed to be on a different network than the
laptop being used.
13. Now close the utility.
14. Unplug the door controller from your laptop and connect to the ethernet port where the Access
Central system is connected.
15. Log into Access Central as the Installer and select Hardware from the Navigator Tab

17. In the Details tab - give the Channel an appropriate name, select the channel type as ‘TCP/IP’,
enter the IP address or click on the Search button you gave the controllers IP Address and
click ‘Add’
18. Access Central will now look for the 512DCi on the network and the door controller should be
discovered, you can now right click on the controller number to configure as normal.
8. Work Required: Access Controller on DIFFERENT
network (Default Subnet) as Access Central.
On point 9 above when programming the IP Address and Default Subnet Mask, the Default Gateway
should have been provided by the IT department, program this in and this will allow the door controller
to contact the Access Central software through the default gateway.
