ACom6 9
(12/99)
Functions and Features: An Overview
The video alarm system ACom carries out remote surveillance and remote control of vid-
eo surveillance devices via ISDN or other public telecommunication networks. The sys-
tem can easily be connected to a multiple ISDN-connection and can send data either to
an internal substation or to an external connection. In order to receive the data you will
need a computer programmed with the CMConnect (part of the delivery) or another
H.320-compatible outstation such as a video telephone. You can enter simple control
and configuration demands for the models ACom6A and ACom6HA already with the dig-
ital dial of an ordinary telephone.
Apart from the basic system ACom6, you have the choice between several other models.
In addition to the transmission of images, the model ACom6A enables you to transmit
audio data as well (from an intercom or another talk-back-circuit).The device transmits
the audio data bidirectionally and parallel to the transmission of pictures.
The model ACom6H is equipped with an integrated hard disc and a memory capacity of
2.1 GB. The hard disc records video data, depending on its configuration, either in a pro-
grammed sequence or “event-driven“, i.e. in the case of an alarm.
The model ACom6HA is equipped with both audio function and hard disc (2.1 GB).
Ideally, ACom is transmitting via the digital communication network ISDN (Integrated
Service Digital Network). All ACom-devices have an integrated ISDN-adapter. Rapid
transmission of large data volumes is best conducted simultaneously on both B-channels
of a basic ISDN-connection S0. The system, however, is fully functional on a single B-
channel, too. The analog phone networks or GSM-networks (Global Systems for Mobile
Telecommunications) can also be used for the sake of data transmission. For these pur-
poses, however, you need an external modem.
The device is capable of compressing the data in compliance with the norm H.320 in or-
der to accelerate the data transmission. This enables it to communicate with other
H.320-compatible systems (such as video conferencing systems or video telephones).
Apart from video data, ACom is capable of transmitting control commands for movable
cameras and other appliances. The range of controllable appliances is steadily being ex-
tended. You may contact your local CBC-branch for more detailed and up-to-date infor-
mation. Two relays can activate further switch functions such as door openers or lamps.
In order to turn work with the ACom system into a convenient experience, the software
CMConnect has been designed to make your life easier. You can watch and evaluate vid-
eo pictures on a computer and easily control the peripherals/appliances connected to the
ACom with mouse and keyboard. The programme has been developed for Windows 95/
98/NT and is delivered with a manual of its own.
For the purposes of local installation and configuration of your ACom, you should make
use of the software CMCtrl which is delivered together with this product.

Assembly
The ACom is suitable both for operation as a desktop and for being mounted on the wall.
zAttention!
The device is intended for indoor use. Do not expose it to either extreme tem-
peratures or extreme humidity at any time and choose its setup site accord-
ingly. The ambient temperature must fall within the range from 5 to 40 °C at all
times, the relative humidity of the air must not exceed 80 %.
❚Do not set up the device in the immediate vicinity of radiators or other heat sources.
Avoid sites which are exposed to direct sunlight.
❚Create sufficient space for lines and cables.
❚Ensure sufficient ventilation of the device.
❚For cable connections, use only cables which have been part of the delivery or are
otherwise suitable and which help to suppress electric interference.
❚When laying out the lines and cables, make sure that they cannot be easily damaged
and ease wherever possible tensile loads and stresses.
Wall-Mounting
At the back of the ACom you will find four fixing holes that you can use for mounting the
ACom on the wall.
☞Important
Mount the ACom in immediate vicinity to your NTBA for it to be the first device
to be connected to the S0-Bus.
• Push against the flaps by the side and lift the lid to open the casing.
• Screw the ACom to the wall by using the four fixing holes.
Assembly

ACom6 13
(12/99)
Connections
You have two options of feeding the connection cables through into the interior of the
casing. You either use the openings in the back of the casing or you punch out the desig-
nated section at the bottom side of the casing and feed the connection cable through the
hole.
Camera
You can connect a maximum of six cameras or other video sources. If you use only one
camera, you can connect it either to the BNC-socket marked Video1 or the first pair of
terminals V1. You can connect any additional cameras to the remaining terminals.
☞Important
For connection use micro coaxial cables since they can be laid more easily in-
side the device.
• Connect the video camera with a video cable (75 ohm, BNC-plug) to the BNC-socket
of the ACom.
or
• Remove terminal block from the socket.
• Put signal conductor on terminal V1.
• Put shield on terminal ⊥.
• Connect additional cameras where applicable.
• Insert terminal block in socket.
• Lead cable around the pivot several times (to reduce tensile loads and stresses).
• Switch on terminal resistance of the video connections not in use. Turn the respective
DIP-switches to position ON.
ISDN
You can easily connect the ACom to the S0-Bus of an ISDN-system by using the ISDN-
cable which is part of the delivery.
zAttention!
Make sure that the ACom is the first device you connect to the S0-Bus immedi-
ately after the NTBA. This is the only way for you to ensure that the ACom is
capable of emitting an alarm even if the ISDN-line has been damaged. Addi-
tional appliances (phone, fax) may if necessary be connected to the ISDN-out-
let of the ACom (ISDN OUT).
Assembly

14 ACom6
Example:
In the course of a burglary in your home, the ISDN-line is short-circuited at a free ISDN-
socket, thus paralysing all additional ISDN-connections. Only the first device (e.g., an
ACom installed in your basement) is not affected and still capable of emitting an alarm.
• Put the plug into the socket ISDN IN of the ACom and the phone socket until they
snap in with a clearly audible “click“.
• If necessary, connect additional appliances to the socket ISDN OUT of the ACom.
Modem
If you cannot use the ISDN for ACom, you may alternatively connect an analog modem
to the serial interface COM1. Data transmission via analog phone networks, however, is
considerably slower. This is why connections via analog networks does not support the
transmission of audio data. Video data and configuration parameters, meanwhile, are
transmitted as they would be with an ISDN-line.
The system supports all modems with an asynchronous RS232-interface and which op-
erate with the Hayes command set. Once you have connected the modem, ACom auto-
matically recognizes it and sets the highest possible data transmission speed.
☞Important
For best results, use modems of an identical make on either side of the data
transmission process.
Screen
You can connect a local surveillance monitor to the video output OUT of the ACom, if you
want to check the camera pictures during the installation in situ.
• Remove terminal block from socket.
• Put signal conductor on terminal V.
• Put shield on terminal ⊥.
• Insert terminal block in socket.
• Lead cable around the pivot several times (to reduce tensile loads and stresses).
Alarm Inputs
The alarm inlets of the ACom allow you the intrusion of one or several alarm triggers such
as door contacts or sensors. If you configure the system accordingly, an alarm trigger
can for instance cause the automatic establishment of a connection between ACom and
CMConnect.
Assembly

ACom6 15
(12/99)
At the connections Alarm IN 0-3, you will find four potential-free alarm inputs. The poten-
tial-free alarm inputs are galvanically separated (by optical couplers) from the other
ACom components and thus give you the greatest possible protection from outside in-
terference. They need a direct voltage between 5 and 12 V. When connecting the alarm
inputs, please make sure that you are connecting the polarry correctly.
Alternatively, there are four potential-linked alarm inputs at the connections Alarm IN 4-7.
Here, you may connect switches or closing contacts directly without the need for any
separate power supply. Connect the respective input and the common ground.
zAttention!
In cases of galvanic separation by optical couplers a common ground should
under no circumstances be used. External voltage must not exceed 12 V. En-
sure correct polarity.
• Remove terminal block from socket.
• Put conductors to the terminals in strict compliance with their polarity. Ensure correct
assignment (+. –. ⊥)
• Insert terminal block in socket.
• Lead cable around the pivot several times (to reduce tensile loads and stresses).
Connection Outputs
The ACom is equipped with two relay outputs (Rel1 and Rel2) for the connection of exter-
nal appliances such as lamps or alarm sirens. The relays function as throw-over switches
and the symbols Open, Closed at the screw terminals each refer to the resting state.
zAttention!
The relay contacts can operate at maximum loads of 24 V, 0.5 A each.
• Remove terminal block from socket.
• Connect the contacts in the middle and to the left. The relay functions as normally
close.
or
Connect the contacts in the middle and to the right. The relay functions as normally
open.
• Insert terminal block in socket.
• Lead cable around the pivot below the screw terminals several times (to reduce tensile
loads and stresses).

Audio Connection
☞Important
The audio function is only available for the models ACom6A and ACom6HA. It
cannot be retrofitted for the other models.
ACom6A and ACom6HA are both equipped with two audio inputs and outputs respec-
tively at the audio terminal block. Here, you can attach two parallel audio and video connec-
tions such as a microphone, a loud-speaker and a phone receiver. At any one time, howev-
er, only one of these may be active.
The audio signals are transmitted bidirectionally and simultaneously with the video sig-
nals. This can be used, for instance, to activate a loud-speaker at the surveillance site or
to listen to an intercom at the entrance door. Transmission of audio data is generally only
possible via the ISDN-network, not by using ordinary phone lines.

Camera and Peripheral Appliance Control (COM 2)
The range of appliances which are controllable by ACom (such as dome cameras) is per-
manently being extended. Information concerning installation and control is separately
contained in the respective installation guides and operational manuals.
zAttention!
When installing and operating the device, please pay attention to any supple-
ment to the installation guide and operational manual in question and also to
any documentation of the other appliances to which the device may be con-
nected such as swivelling/inclined heads or cameras. You will find important
safety advice there and information concerning permissible applications.
