Introduction
The PENN Connected PC10 Remote Wireless Monitoring System provides automated temperature
monitoring solutions for the food retail industry.
Examples of equipment for monitoring
The following list provides examples of typical refrigeration equipment that the PC10 system can
monitor:

Installation sequence
Install the hardware in the following sequence only: gateway, repeaters, temperature, and door
sensors.
Guidelines for magnet usage
Observe the following guidelines when you use the magnet:

Note: PENN Connected supplies a door sensor magnet with each door sensor; it does not supply
a magnet for the temperature and humidity sensors. To swipe the temperature and humidity
sensors, you require a magnet of a similar size to that used to attach items to a domestic
refrigerator door. Do not confuse the door sensor magnet with the user-supplied temperature
and humidity sensor magnets.
• Use a low-powered magnet to swipe the sensors.
• Use the magnet to swipe the sensors from top to bottom only.
• You can perform multiple magnet swipes on the same sensor. However not in quick
succession.
• Do not hold or store the magnet in position near a sensor or the reed switch as the sensor may
enter production mode and malfunction.
Pre-installation survey
Before you install and commission the PENN Connected PC10, perform a pre-installation survey on
the premises. The pre-installation survey can help to determine the optimal placement of hardware
in a premises. Use the pre-installation survey to assess the following site conditions:
Network capabilities
Evaluate the network capabilities and note the following factors:
• The presence of an adequate Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) signal strength
with a CSQ of 15 or higher
• If the premises requires an external aerial
• The availability of an Ethernet option
• Any potential firewall issues
Physical infrastructure
Evaluate the physical infrastructure and note the following factors:
• The number of refrigeration units to monitor
• The types of refrigeration units to monitor
• The total square footage of the refrigeration area, and the distance between individual units
• The presence of dividing walls or floors between refrigeration units
• The placement of any refrigeration units in separate areas or spaces
• The presence of any dividing walls or floors, and their construction material
• The presence of any potential signal strength barriers, such as metal or concrete pillars
Electrical system
Evaluate the electrical system setup and note the following factors:
• The optimal location for the gateway
• The use of additional protection for the gateway and repeaters, such as plastic junction boxes
• The ease of access to electrical power or Ethernet

• The potential to place hardware near entrances or windows for better GSM coverage
• The number of repeaters to install
• The optimal locations for the repeaters, within a 25 m line of sight of the gateway or another
repeater
• If you need to install repeaters on opposite sides of a wall to improve signal strength
• The location of doorways where you can install repeaters if existing walls impede the signal
strength
Note:
• It is advisable to provide a separate, independent, and clearly tagged power supply for the
gateway and repeaters.
• Install the gateway and repeaters at a height that is free of interference from staff and
customers.
• Do not position hardware above ceiling tiles.
Probe and sensor placement
Evaluate the refrigeration units and note any difficulties that may occur during the following tasks:
• The installation of external probes in freezers or chill rooms
• The installation of external probes or internal sensors in back wall chillers
• The installation of the door sensors and magnetic switches
• The installation of the sensors in coffin, well, wall, spider, and any other units
• The potential requirement to remove and replace food products from refrigeration units
during the installation

Overview of the gateway
The gateway receives data from the temperature and door sensors and transmits it to the PENN
Connected cloud-based platform. The gateway connects to sensors and repeaters within a 25 m
range; use additional repeaters to extend the range.
The gateway uses a separate mains-powered AC power supply that you can plug into a dedicated
fused circuit, and includes a local power adapter. It can communicate directly with 15 sensors. With
support from 5 to 9 repeaters, each gateway can further communicate with a maximum of 100
sensors. Use a minimum of one repeater for each installation.
Note:
• The gateway is available in a GSM or Ethernet version.
• The gateway does not include Wi-Fi or a Modbus connection.
• You cannot fit a PSU battery pack to the gateway.
• The GSM gateway includes a SIM card; you cannot change the SIM card to a different one.
• Do not install the gateway in a refrigerated space; install it in an adjacent ambient area
instead.

Installing and commissioning the gateway
1. Install the gateway at a central point of the premises, and at a height that prevents
interference from staff and customers. See Overview of the gateway for more information.
2. Secure the gateway with screws, tie-wraps, or double-sided tape. You can also use an open
enclosure.
3. Connect the gateway to a power supply, and move the aerials into a vertical position.
4. Check that the gateway powers on in the following light sequence:
- Blue network light blinks rapidly to indicate connection to the ZigBee network
- Red data light blinks to indicate the transmission of data through the GSM network
- Green server light remains steady to indicate connection to the internet

5. On the Android device, open the PENN Commissioner app, and enter the username and
password that the PENN Connected administrator sent by email.
6. Commission the gateway in one of the following ways:
- In the ICCID or IMEI field, enter the unique 15 or 16 digit number found on the side of the
gateway, and tap Register.
- Tap SCAN GATEWAY to open the camera. Scan the QR code or the barcode found on the side
of the gateway, and tap Register.
Overview of repeaters
The repeaters extend the range of the wireless network. The maximum range of a repeater is 25 m
within a line of sight of the gateway.
Plug the repeaters into a dedicated mains power supply socket; each repeater includes a
local power adapter. Each repeater can connect to 15 sensors. The repeaters do not require
commissioning.
