Themeterusesone100 A,3kAsingle pole loadswitchasthedisconnectiondeviceonasingle-phase
meter.
Thisdisconnectionswitchdisconnects theconsumerwhenthecreditexpiresor the loadlimitisexceeded.
Whenthedisconnectionswitchopensduetoanoverloadlimitbeingexceededitremainsopenfor
approximately 30secondsandthenre-closes.Iftheoverloadisstill presentitopensagain.After5
consecutive30-secondreconnectionattempts thedisconnectionswitchwill remainopenfor30 minutes.
Thispatternisrepeatedindefinitelyuntil the overloadisremoved.
It shouldbenotedthatthedisconnectionswitchisnotdesignedasanover-currentprotectiondeviceand
must notbeusedtointerruptfaultcurrents.
CircuitBreaker typemeter (BEC23PD)
Themeterusesone60Adoublepole circuitbreakerasthedisconnectiondeviceonasingle-phasemeter.
Thecircuitbreakerdisconnects theconsumerwhenthecreditexpiresor theloadlimitisexceeded.When
thecircuitbreakertripsduetotheloadlimitbeingexceeded(overload),youwill notbeable toresetthe
breakeruntil theoverloadisremoved.
EarthLeakagetypemeter(BEC23PE)
Themeterusesone20Adouble pole circuitbreakerasthedisconnectiondeviceonasingle-phasemeter.
Thecircuitbreakerdisconnects theconsumerwhenthecreditexpires,theloadlimitisexceededor thereis
afaultcurrentdetected.Whenthecircuitbreakertripsduetotheloadlimitbeingexceeded(overload),
youwill notbeable toresetthebreakeruntil theoverloadisremoved.Ifittripsduetoafaultcurrent,a
qualifiedelectricianshouldbecalledintoinvestigate thereasonwhy itistripping.
Note: Withthistypemeterareadyboardordistributionboardisnotnecessaryfortheinstallation.The
outputfromthemetercanbeconnecteddirectly toaplug socket.See Section12,‘Typical
Installation’.
RateLED
ThemeterhasarateLEDthatpulses1000 timesperkWhdeliveredandindicatestotheconsumerthe
rate atwhichelectricity isbeingconsumed.
It canbeused,inconjunctionwiththeMeterInterrogatoropticalreaderandatest loadtocheckthe
calibrationofthemeter.TheRateLEDcanalsobeusedtogetherwiththeMeterInterrogator Kitto
performanopticaldump.Thisindicatestheremainingcredit,usertotaltodate,metertotaltodate,
meterserialnumberandsoftwareversion.
Intheeventofmeterfailuretheinformationavailable fromtheRateLEDmayalsobereaddirectly using
aMC171 DirectProbe inconjunctionwithanInterrogator Kit.

OverloadIndication
Theconsumerisdisconnectedwhentheloadpower/currentbeingconsumed,averagedovera15
secondperiod,exceedstheload/currentlimit.Whenthishappensall tensegments oftherate
consumptionbar-graphflashasanindicationtotheconsumertoswitchoff appliances.Theloadlimitis
programmable allowingthesupply authoritytolimitthemaximumpoweranindividualconsumerisable
todraw.
LowCredit Indication
Whenthelowcreditthresholdisreachedthemeterwill begintoflashthe icon.Only whenthecredit
goesabovethethresholdwill the icongooff.
ZeroCredit Indication
Whentheavailable creditreacheszero thedisconnectdevicedisconnects theload.Whenthecreditis
zero the iconremainsoncontinuously andthedisconnectdevicestatusicon goesoff or thecircuit
breakerwill trip.
Note: ThedisconnectdevicestatusiconontheLCD isnotavailable onacircuitbreakertypemeter
(BEC23PE).
Wait (Clock)Indication
Whenthewaiticonappearsthesystemisbusyandthekeypadisdisabled.Theconsumermust waituntil
thewaiticondisappearsbeforeenteringdata.

Intheeventthatatamperconditionhasbeendetectedthemeterwill initiatethetamperprocess.The
configurationflagsintheoptionsregisters(setupatthetimeofmanufacture)governsthis.Themeter
canbeconfiguredtodisconnecttheconsumer’ssupply andeitherdisplayor notdisplaythetamper
detection.Ifconfiguredtodisplaythetamperstatusthenthe“LightBulb” iconwill bedisplayed,as
indicatedinthe graphiconthefollowingpage.

Ifthe‘TamperDetect’hasbeenenabledonyourmeteratthefactory,thenyoumightneedtousethis
token.Ifameterisremovedfromthecommonbasewithoutisolatingthepowertothismeter,themeter
will gointoatamperstate.Toclear thistamperstateyouwill needtomakea‘Clear Tamper’tokenata
vendingunit,powerupthemeteragainandenterthe20 digits Makesurethatyouisolatethepower
fromthemeterbeforeremovingitfromthebasetoavoidthemetergoingintothisstate.Thistokenis
meterspecificandmay only beusedonce.
Commissioningtoken(Non-MeterSpecific)
Thecommissioningtokenisanon-meterspecifictoken 12754194144864505970.Themetercanbe
configuredwithor withoutcommissioning.Ifconfigured,themeterissuppliedwiththedisconnection
deviceopenandthetamperdetectioncircuitryinactive.
Onenteringthetokenthemeterwill connecttheconsumer’ssupply (internaldisconnectiondevicemeter)
or allow themanualresetofthecircuitbreaker.Thetamperdetectionwill alsobeactivatedinwhatever
configurationissetupduringproduction,ifenabled.

tokenaccepticoninitially appearsfor aperiodof4secondstoindicateavalidtokenandthewaiticon

Thistoken,definedasSTS0,isusedtoperformaseriesoftests onthemeter.
Typinginthe20-digitcode,initiatesthetest,whichcontinuestostepthroughthesequenceautomatically
whilst displayingthedatashownforeachstep.Thesestepswill changefrommetertometeranddetailed
belowarethevariousstepsthateachmeterwill gothroughandwhateachstepindicates,thisisan
example ofthe results.

Installingthewall base
1.Determinethecable entrypointandmeterposition(between1.3and1.5mabovefloor level)with
user.
2.Positionthetemplateintheabovepositionnotcloserthan1meterfromthenearest tapandnot
directly above astoveorwater.
3.Tape thetemplatetothewall.
4.Drill theholesthroughthetemplatewitha6mm masonrybitdeepenoughtoaccommodatewall
plugs.
5.Drill holesinwall baseforcables/glands.
6.Fitwall plugsandscrewthewall basetothewall.Donotovertightenasthiscouldtwist thewall
base.
Wiringupthewall base
Caution: Thewiringistobeperformedbyacertifiedinstallationelectricianandmust conformtothe
prevailingGovernmentstandardsandsafetyregulations.
1.Wirethewall base usingcable glandsappropriate fortheinstallation.
2.Connectthe incomingsupply tothetopsetofterminals(abovethe horizontalpartition).
3.Connectthelive wiretotheterminalontherightandtheneutralwire tothe left.
4.Connecttheearthwiretotheearthterminal.
5.Connectall outgoingwirestothebottomsetofterminals. Livetotherightterminal, neutraltotheleft
andtheearthtotheearthterminal.
6.Theoutgoingwiresfromthewall baseshouldbeconnectedtoareadyboard,iftheearthleakage
typemeterisnotbeingused.RefertoSection12for “TypicalInstallations”.
Note: ThismeterisequippedwithaLine/LoadReversalDetector.Ifthelineandloadwiringis
swappedaroundthenthefirst timethemeterdrawsaloadinexcess of40Watts,themeterwill
