GENERAL INFORMATION
Overview
This user guide contains important information on installing, operating, and maintaining the
Gryphon™ coin changer. The coin changer takes currency at high acceptance rates and
provides a superior level of resistance against specific types of fraud.
Features

Interfaces
The coin changer operat65es in machines that support the following interfaces.
Interface Cable Image Description
MDB
A serial-communication interface standard used with vending equipment. Allows multiple
devices to be added to a single connection on the vending machine control board by linking
1 device to another that is parallel to the main MDB harness.
EXEC
A serial executive protocol (or protocol A) that is based on the MEI 20 mA current loop link.
Allows a payment system device to be connected to other third-party devices in a
transaction system.
BDV
A German bi-directional serial interface used between component parts inside a vending
machine. This is a super set of protocol A. BDV is an abbreviation for the German Vending
industry committee that has defined the interface.
JVI (VCCS)
A serial-communication interface used in Japanese and Korean vending machines. Allows
multiple devices to be added to a single connection on the vending machine control board
by linking 1 device to another that is parallel to the main VCCS harness.

Specifications
The operating voltage of the coin changer is listed on the label of each product. The label is
located on the left side of the device. It must not be used with any power source other than
that indicated.
Restrictions
Please consult your Crane Payment Innovations (CPI) sales representative; CPI authorized
distributor, or cranepi.com/support for a list of compatible vending machines.
Safety
•The coin changer printed circuit boards (PCBs) are fitted with components that can be
damaged by electrostatic discharge. Please observe proper handling procedure for
components exposed to the risk of electrostatic discharge.
•Do not use the coin changer if the device or connecting cables are damaged.
•Turn off power to the vending machine before you remove or clean the coin changer.
•Contact CPI if you wish to alter the construction of the device to a greater extent than
that described in this manual.
•If the device is no longer required, please correctly dispose of it.

INSTALLATION
Please contact a local sales representative about any installation questions.
Unpacking the Coin Changer
Unpack the coin changer and immediately inspect it for damage. If the unit is damaged,
return it to its original carton along with packing materials.
Notify the delivering carrier of damages and request immediate inspection. Send a letter of
intent to file a claim to the delivering carrier within 72 hours from the time of delivery. Send a
copy of the letter to the shipper.
Only the consignee (the person or company receiving the coin changer) can file a claim
against the carrier for concealed damages.
Retain the original carton and packing materials for future use in shipping or transporting the
coin changer.
Mounting
The coin changer was designed for ease of mounting onto existing studs provided by original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Some machines may require brackets or faceplates to
mount the unit. Refer to your machine operation manual or contact your distributor/OEM for
more model-specific mounting information.
1. Turn off the power to the vending machine.
2. Push and hold the yellow button on the top right of the coin changer and tilt the
validator assembly forward to access the mounting holes. You do not have to remove
the cassette.
3. Hang the coin changer on the vending machine’s mounting studs.
4. The lower mount (a) can be difficult to see through the device. Hanging the coin
changer from the top 2 studs (b and c) first will help to locate the lower mount.

5. Tighten screws if necessary, being careful not to over-tighten, and close the validator
assembly. The lower mount is difficult to access with a large screwdriver.
6. Remove the cassette. Lift it by the handle and pull toward you.
7. Fill the cassette with coins, ensuring the coins are inserted into the proper tubes.
8. Return the filled cassette to the coin changer and ensure it is properly seated.
9. Connect the MDB, EXEC, BDV, or VCCS cable.
If you have a note validator, connect the MDB or VCCS harness from the coin
changer to the note validator’s Y connector.

10. Use cable ties to secure any excess cabling inside the vending machine, ensuring
that the cables do not interfere with the vending machine or Gryphon coin changer
operation.

Alignment
After installation, ensure that there is a small gap of 2-4mm (0.08-0.16 inches) between the
lever on the vending machine and the return lever on the coin changer.
•Press the coin return lever on the machine door. Confirm that it fully opens the
validator lid on the coin changer, and then smoothly returns and fully closes.

•Check alignment between the coin input chute and the coin cup, ensuring it does not
impede operation of the validator lid.
•Check alignment between the base of the coin changer, payout area, and cashbox
entry.
•Align, adjust, and test as necessary to ensure coins are properly routed before
continuing.
Cable Connection
The coin changer may be fitted with more than 1 cable; these may be intended for transmit
and receive rate (TX-RX) communications, driving an external display, or extracting audit
data. Once relevant cables are connected, and before closing the machine door, tuck any
unused cables away ensuring that none are trapped between the reject lever mechanism
and the vending machine door.

INITIAL POWER UP
The coin changer will power up and check the number of coins in each tube. If any tubes are
empty, the coin changer will tell you which tubes need coins. You should fill all tubes with a
minimum of 3 coins per tube.
Once the cassette is filled with coins, the coin changer will measure the tubes and display
the total amount of change.
Cassette Setup
It is easy to customize the coin changer cassette. Use one of the many stock configurations
or create your own. There are 2 methods to configure the cassette. Please note: The
cassette must be empty before proceeding.
Cassette Code
To select a predefined cassette:
1. Press the MENU KEY (≡).
2. Press the D button.
3. Enter the code located on the front of the cassette.
4. Press SAVE to confirm.
The coin changer will now calibrate the tubes and zero any coin counts.
Creating Custom Cassette
Follow these steps if the code is not recognized or to change individual tubes.
1. Ensure the cassette is empty.
2. Select the MENU KEY (≡). Then select the D button, followed by CUSTOM.
3. Use the man machine interface (MMI) to choose the tube (A-F) that you would like to
edit.
4. Scroll through the coin list and select your coin.
5. Press SAVE to program the tube.
6. When all tubes have been programmed, press ≡.
7. When prompted, press START to calibrate.
The coin changer will now check tube capacity and display the amount of change in the
tubes.
