1 System Overview
1.1 System Components and Basic Functions

The Night Navigator™HSC provides visual confirmation of objects detected by standard navigation
equipment. It also can detect and identify objects that are not detected by standard navigation
equipment. The capabilities of the Night Navigator  HSC enhance operational safety and help to reduce
the stress of the bridge personnel. The Night Navigator  HSC system is comprised of the following
components:
1. Night Navigator Touch Screen Controller: this is the control panel that provides the main user
interface for controlling the Night Navigator  HSC.
2. Night Navigator Sensor Platform: this contains the positioner and the image intensified night
vision camera.
Positioner: internal mechanism to aim the camera to the required ± 10° and ± 20° azimuth
rotation and trim the elevation range ± 9° (degrees of elevation from horizon).
High Definition (HD) Gated Image Intensified Night Camera: the night camera is designed
for use at night and amplifies the ambient light, even starlight, tens of thousands of times.
It has a fixed FOV of 22°.
3. Monitor: displays the video signal from the night vision camera. Can be supplied by Current
Corporation or the shipyard. Contact Current Corporation for a list of approved marine displays.
4. Video Converter: changes format and scales image size to suit monitor on the bridge.

1.2 Warnings and Precautions
Please read all instructions carefully before operating your Night Navigator  HSC.
This is an image-intensified camera. Each unit is registered for export. An export license may be required
for re-export.
The camera must be returned to your local agent or Current Corporation for repair or calibration.
Opening the unit will void the warranty. Any un-authorized service or repair to the system will void the
warranty.
Current Corporation’s Night Navigator  image intensifier - as with any other night vision intensifier - is
designed to be operated at night and is, therefore, highly sensitive to bright light conditions. Exposure
to continuous high light levels will result in permanent damage to your image intensifier.
Do not point the system at the sun. Damage may occur even when the camera is off.
Do not point the system at bright lights when the Night Vision Camera is on.
Such damage is not covered by warranty.
Please ensure that you read and strictly adhere to the operating instructions and precautions provided.
Current Corporation reserves the right to waive warranty liability if it is determined that the operating
instructions and precautions were not followed.
Warning: This system is not for use as the primary night navigation device.
Warning: The Night Navigatoris an image-intensified system intended for use only at night.
Warning: Use of the image intensifier in the presence of strong light will cause permanent
damage as the bright image will become permanently “burned in”. This type of
damage will void the warranty.
Warning: Exposure to direct sunlight will damage the image intensifier. Damage can occur even
when the camera is off and this is not covered by warranty.
Warning: No user-serviceable parts inside. Do not remove the cover. Refer servicing to
qualified service personnel.

2 Using the Night Navigator  HSC
2.1 Touch Screen Controller
The touch screen controller has a few simple external controls to allow the operator to turn on the unit
and adjust the brightness.

2.1.1 Power On/Off
Press momentarily to power the controller on or off (see Section 2.2 System Startup and Shutdown).
2.1.2 Brightness Adjustment
Press and hold the appropriate button to increase or decrease the brightness of the monitor. Brightness
continues to change as long as the button is held.
2.2 System Startup and Shutdown
2.2.1 System Startup
Press and hold the “POWER” button on the controller until the display panel turns on.
The Night Navigator  HSC software will appear in about 30 seconds. After the software appears, the
Sensor Platform will automatically initialize and the touch screen will display the message “Positioner
not ready.”
Please wait for the “Positioner not ready” message to clear before operating the Night Navigator  HSC
system.
For temperatures below 0°C, the Sensor Platform must be powered 30 minutes to 1 hour prior to use in
order to allow the system to warm up. During this warm up time, the system should not be operated
and the Night Camera should be off.

2.2.2 System Shutdown
Press and hold the “POWER” button on the controller until the software begins to shut down.
The display panel will turn off after about 15 seconds. If the system pan position is not at zero, it will
return to the zero position after approximately 30 seconds. If the night vision camera is on, it will turn
off after approximately two minutes.
2.3 Night Navigator On Screen Display (OSD)
The on screen display shows pan position, tilt angle and distance ahead to assist the operator when it is
so dark that visual cues normally used to orient the viewer are not visible.

The distance indications are set to 0.1 NM, 0.2 NM, and 0.4 NM by default. They are approximate and
are user definable, using the procedure described in Section 2.5.9 Range Lines.

2.4 Main Controls

The controller is used to direct the positioner, to control the camera and to provide information to the
user. It consists of functions to turn the camera to port and starboard, to set tilt trim, and to adjust
focus or iris position.
2.4.1 Presets
There are five azimuth preset positions: 20° Port, 10° Port, 0°, 10° Starboard, 20° Starboard. Press and
hold a preset button to move the horizontal position of the camera. When a preset button is released,
the camera automatically returns to the zero position. The automatic return to zero function can be
disabled in the settings menu, as described in Section 2.5.3 Pan Auto Return to Zero.
2.4.2 Tilt Trim
The tilt position can be adjusted between -9° and +9° from the horizontal. Press and hold to tilt the
camera. Movement continues as long as the button is held.
2.4.3 Camera On/Off
Press momentarily to toggle the camera on or off. There will be delay of 5 seconds before
an image is displayed when the camera is powered on. When the camera is on, the border
of the “CAM” button will be highlighted in green, and the iris and focus functions will be
enabled.
2.4.4 Iris
There are 6 distinct iris positions. Increasing the iris will allow more light into the camera producing a
brighter image. Decreasing the iris will result in less light into the camera producing a darker image.
The image may be optimized by changing the iris setting depending on the ambient lighting conditions.
Press and hold to adjust camera iris. Movement continues as long as the button is held. A momentary
press will move the iris one step. Keeping the iris closed will help to protect the image intensifier from
damage. NOTE: if the camera is not turned on the buttons will be disabled and the iris cannot be
adjusted.

2.4.5 Focus
The night camera is configured to allow the user to make manual focus adjustments through the entire
range from 15m to infinity. Press to adjust camera focus. Movement continues as long as the button is
held. A momentary press will move the focus one step. NOTE: if the camera is not turned on the
buttons will be disabled and the focus cannot be adjusted.
2.4.6 System Settings
Press momentarily to enter the Settings screen (see Section 2.5 Settings).
2.5 Settings
Press the “Settings”button momentarily to enter the Settings screen.

2.5.1 Tilt
Press and hold the up and down arrows to tilt the camera. Movement continues as long as the button is
held.
2.5.2 Pan
Press and hold the left and right arrows to pan the camera. Movement continues as long as the button
is held. This adjustment may be needed to change the system zero offset (see Section 2.5.5 Zero Offset).
2.5.3 Pan Auto Return to Zero
When this check box is enabled (default), the pan positioner will return to the zero position as soon as
any pan button is released (20 PORT, 10 PORT, 0, 10 STBD, 20 STBD).
When this check box is disabled, the pan positioner will stay at the commanded pan position when any
pan button is released. Pressing the “0” button will return the pan positioner to the zero position.

2.5.4 Reset Params
This will reset all parameters to factory defaults. Press “Reset Params.” The popup
message below will appear. Press "Yes" to reset all parameters.
The following user definable parameters will be reset to defaults:
Focus and Iris Positions
Pan and Tilt Positions
Zero Offset
Horizon and Range Line Positions and Labels
Range Line Units
Night Camera Brightness Threshold
Night Camera Timeout
2.5.5 Zero Offset
In the event that the Night Navigator Sensor Platform is not installed with the 0° pan
position aligned with the center line of the vessel, the “Zero Offset” function can be used
to correct this.
Using the pan controls, move the pan position so that it is directed straight ahead (or at the
desired position).
Press “Zero Offset”.
A popup message will be displayed: “Warning: the current pan position will become the new
zero position. Do you want to continue?”
Press “Yes.”
Note: the maximum zero offset adjustment allowed is ± 3 degrees from the factory default. If
the user has moved the pan too far, a popup will be displayed: “The current actual pan position
is less than -3 degrees. Zero offset cannot be changed.” or “The current actual pan position is
greater than 3 degrees. Zero offset cannot be changed.” In these cases, the user should move
the pan position in the opposite direction and press “Zero Offset” again.
This will adjust the zero degree pan position left or right.
2.5.6 Calibrate Pan/Tilt
This will automatically calibrate the pan and tilt limits for the system. Press “Calibrate
Pan/Tilt.” A popup message will ask: “Warning: the pan and tilt will move to their limits
during calibration and the zero positions may change. Do you want to continue?” Press
“Yes.”
The pan will move for about 3 seconds to its limit and back to the centre. This should not affect the zero
offset adjustment.

Next the tilt will move up and down for about 10 to 15 seconds. Following this adjustment, the final tilt
position will have to be adjusted in order to set the position of the horizon in the monitor.
2.5.7 Return to Previous Screen
This will return to the previous screen. This button occurs at various places in the
controller software.
2.5.8 Change Buttons to Green/Grey
This will toggle the button colours between charcoal grey and green.
2.5.9 Range Lines
Press the “Range Lines” button to setup the text and position of the range lines on the
monitor. The following screen will appear.

2.5.9.1 Position of All Lines
The “all lines” buttons will fine tune the position of the horizon line on the monitor. The other range
lines will also move along with the position of the horizon. The position of the horizon must always be
set first because this will affect the position of all the lines on the screen.
Note: before setting the position of the horizon line or any of the other range lines, make sure that the
camera physical tilt is set to an appropriate zero position.
Press the up or down arrow around “all lines”. The first time you press an up or down arrow, the
following popup message will appear. Press “Yes.”
