MeasurevoltagesfromthePCBpadnexttothecomponent.
Staticprecautions
SMDcomponents,particularlyICs,maybedamagedbythestaticlevelspresentinthe
workshop.Damagecausedbystaticmaynotimmediatelycausecomponentfailurebutcould
causepartialdamageandapossiblefailureinthefuture.ObservingthesesimpleSMD
precautionswillavoidproductfailuresrelatedtostaticdamage‐
Alwayswearagroundedwristbandwhenreplacinganyelectroniccomponents.
Alwaysstorecomponentsintheiroriginalpackagingorconductiveplasticbags.
Neverstorecomponentsinplastictraysorbagswithoutprotection.
Soldering/desolderingSMDcomponents
Neverre‐useoldSMDcomponentsafterde‐soldering!
Alwaysapplysolderheatdirectlytothecontactarea.Avoidover‐heatingadjacent
components.
AlwaysrepairSMDPCBswiththecorrecttools.SMDcomponentscanonlybereplacedwith
ahotairpencilorsolderingirondesignedforSMDcomponents,preferablywith
temperaturecontrol.
Keepthesolderingtemperatureaslowaspossible.370ºCisrecommendedforLeadfree
SMDrework.MostSMDcomponentswillwithstand370ºCfor5to10seconds

Whenusingsolderpasteapressuredispensershouldbeusedtoensurethecorrectamount
ofsolderisappliedtoeachpad.
Solderpasteshouldnotbeusedwithdirectheatingmethodsasthesolderbetween
componentpinsmaynotbemelted.
Ifnecessary,removeexcesssolderpastewithsolderbraid.
RemovingSMDresistorsandcapacitorsfromthePCBwithasolderingiron
1.Fitthesolderingironwithatiplargeenoughtobridgebothendsofthecomponent.
2.Placethesolderingironsothatitsflattipwillheatbothendsofthecomponentatonce.
3.Whenthesoldermelts,removethecomponentwithtweezers.
4.AllowthePCBtocoolforafewminutes,removinganyexcesssolderwithdesoldering
braid.
FittingreplacementSMDresistorsandcapacitorstothePCBwithasolderingiron
1.Applyalittlefluxtotheconnections.
2.Placethecomponentinposition.
3.Tinthesolderingiron,bringthetipintocontactwiththePCBpadandflowsoldertothe
joint.Avoidbringingthesolderingirontipdirectlyintocontactwiththecomponent.
RemovingSMDICsfromthePCB
1.Usingfinetippedsidecuttersortweezercutters,snipalltheleadsofthedeviceand
removetheICbody.
2.DesoldertheleadsfromthePCBpads.
3.CleanupthePCBwithsolderbraid.
RemovingSMDICswithahotairSMDtool
1.FitasuitablesizetipfortheICbeingremoved.
2.HeattheICevenlyuntilthesoldermelts.
3.RemovetheICwithtweezers.
FittingreplacementICstothePCBwithasolderingiron
1.CheckthatthepinsoftheICarenotdistorted.
2.Usingtweezers,positiontheICoverthefootprint.
3.CheckthatalltheICpinsarecorrectlyalignedwiththepads.
4.Withaveryfinetipsolderingiron,solderinthepinsatthecornersoftheIC.
5.Re‐checkthealignmentandcorrectifnecessary.
6.WhenthealignmentisOK,soldertheremainingpinsoftheICtothePCB.

ThefollowingisabriefdescriptionoftheinternalPCBsfoundintheCDt.
TheservoPCBismounteddirectlyontotheCDmechanism,thisincludestheCDloadermotor
andsleddrivers,theservodriverandCDdecoder.
ThemainPCBismountedinthebaseofthechassisandcontainsthepowersupplies,optical
andcoaxialSPDIFoutputandtheuserinterfacemicrocontroller.
Discreading/decodermoduleandservoPCB
Thediscreadinglaserpickupismountedinamotordrivenslotloader,whichreceivesits
operatingcommandsviatheservoPCB.
TheheartoftheservoPCBistheCDdecoderIntegratedCircuitIC401.Thisiscontrolledby
softwarerunningonthemainboardmicrocontrollerIC701viaanI2CBus.
Themicrocontrollersendshighlevelcommands(e.g.ReadTOC,Playtrack1)totheservoPCB
viaacommunicationbus.DiscloadingiscontrolledbythemicrocontrollerontheservoPCB.
WhenadiscisinsertedintotheplayerthefirstthingthatneedstohappenisthattheTableof
Contents(TOC)ofthediscisread.Thisinformationcontainsthestartandendlocationofeach
trackonthediscfordiscnavigationpurposes.
InordertoreadtheTOCthelaserisswitchedonbythedecoderIC,andafocusrampis
initiated.Iffocusisfoundthenthediscmotorisswitchedonforashorttime,thenthePLLis
switchedonandthediscisacceleratedtofullspeed.Oncethespeedhadbeenachievedand
thePLLislockedontothedata,theradialloopisswitchedonandthesubcodewillberead
fromthediscandfedtothedecoder.
Thefocusandradialpositionsofthelaserspotarecontrolledbythedecoderbylookingatthe
diodesignalscomingfromtheopticalpickup(OPU).TheseareD1,D2,D3andD4forfocus,R1
andR2forradial.TheerrorsignalfromthesediodesisusedtogenerateaPDMsignal.This
signalisthenfilteredwithalowpassfilterandamplifiedbythemotordriver(BA5984FP)to
movetheactuators.
PowerforthelaserdiodeissupplieddirectlyfromthedecoderICwhichmonitorslaseroutput
andadjuststhepoweraccordingly.
Thereisasinglesystemclockontheservoboard,8.4672MHz.Thisisself‐generatedbythe
decoderIC.
Thereare2mainpowersuppliestotheservoboard,+5V_CDforthesignalprocessing
electronicsand+5V_MOTORtoIC402supplyingmotorandsledpower.The+5V_CDsupplyis
subregulatedto+3V3andsub‐sub‐regulatedto+1.8Von‐boardforthedecoderandother
electronics.

Microprocessorcontrolsystem
SystemcontrolisprovidedbymicrocontrollerIC701onthemainPCB.Themicrocontroller
acceptsexternalusercommands(IRhandset,frontpanelkeysandMC‐BUSloop)and
translatesthemintoinstructionsthatoperatetheCDmechanism,viacommandssenttothe
servoPCB.
ThemicrocontrollercommunicateswiththedecoderontheservoPCBviatheCD_CLand
CD_DAlines.
DigitalOutputs
ThedigitalaudiodatafromtheservoPCBisfedtothemainPCBviacableassemblyCON701.
ThedataisthenbufferedbyIC601andIC604.TheSPDIFdataisfedtotheopticaloutput
(TOTX401)andtotheRCAcoaxialoutput(viadigitaltransformerL402).
Powersupplies
TheinternalregulatedpowersuppliesfortheCDtarederivedfromaswitchingpowersupply
onthemainPCB.Thishastwoseparateoutputs,+5Vand+10V.
The10VsupplydrivesthedisplaybacklightviaaswitchablecurrentsourceT702/T706/T707.
The5Vsupplydrivestheotherpartsofthecircuit.
Frontpaneldisplay
ThefrontpaneldisplayisabacklitLCDmodulemountedinamouldingbehindthefrontpanel.
TheLCDmoduleisdrivenbysignalsfrommicrocontrollerIC701pins37and38(DISP_DATAand
DISP_SCLK).IC701alsoreadsbackananaloguevoltageencodedfromkeyspressedonthefront
panel(viaKEYS_IN1pin7),andremotecontrolinformationfromtheeyevialineRC5_INpin
32.

WhenundertakinganyrepairworkontheCDplayer,engineersshouldnotethattheplayer
includesaswitchingpowersupplyconnecteddirectlytolivemainsandotherhighvoltages,
locatedonthemainPCB.CapacitorsinthepowersupplywillretainveryhighDCvoltages,even
whendisconnectedfromthemains.Exerciseextremecarewhenremovingorhandlingthe
mainPCB.
Powersupplyrepair
Ifapowersupplyfaultissuspected,checkthevoltageofthe5Vand10Vpowersuppliesonthe
mainPCB.ThesecanbefoundattheSMDelectrolyticcapacitorsC506andC507.Ifeitheror
bothofthesepowersuppliesismissing,theremaybeapowersupplyfaultorashort‐circuitto
thepowersupplyinquestion.
TheprimarysideofthepowersupplycanonlybetestedwithanisolatedDVMwhenthemain
PCBisinstalledcorrectlyinthechassis.NeverconnectpowertothemainPCBwhenithasbeen
removedfromthechassisoruseanygroundedtestequipmentsuchasoscilloscopestocheck
forprimaryfaults.
Initially,checktheDCsupplyvoltageacrossthe'+'and'‐'pinsofD501.Thevoltagefoundwill
dependonthemainsvoltage,butwillbebetween300‐350V.Ifthisvoltageisnotpresent,
disconnectmainspowerandchecktheminiaturefuseFS801.IfthefuseisOK,removethePCB
andchecktheprimarycomponentswithaDVMresistancemeter.
IftheDCsupplyvoltageispresentandthepowersupplyisnotrunning,checkthevoltage
betweenpins1and8ofIC501.Thisisabout0.9Vinnormaloperation.Ifthisvoltageislow,
checkR501.Checkalsothebiassupplybetweenpins2and8ofIC501.Thisshouldbearound
6V,butwillonlybepresentiftheswitchingsupplyisswitchingcorrectly.Ifthesupplyisnot
switching,suspectaproblemwithIC501orTX501.TX501canbecheckedwithaDVMsetfor
resistance.
Thesecondarysuppliesaresimplerectifiedsupplies.The'FEEDBACK'lineprovidesclose
regulationforthe+5Vsupplywhilethe+10Vsupplymayvaryalittleinvoltage.Ifthe+5V
supplyisnotaccuratelyset,thisismostlikelyacomponentfaultinIC502orthenetworkof
componentsaroundit.
Discwillnotread
Ifthediscwillnotread,checktoseeifthediscisrotating.Ifthediscisrotatingthenitmeans
thatthelaserhasfocussedonthedisc,thereforeallpowersuppliesareok.Ifthediscdoesnot
rotatethencheckthepowersuppliestotheservoPCBatpins+5V_MOTORand+5V_CDon
connectorCON405oftheservoPCB.Ifthepowersuppliesareworkingcorrectly,removethe
loaderandsubstitutethelaserpickupwithanewreplacementunit.Ifthediscwillstillnot
read,substitutewithanewservoPCB.
CAUTION!WhendisconnectingtheflexfoilcablefromthelaserpickuptotheservoPCB,always
ensurethatstaticprecautionsaretakenwithagroundedstaticmatandwrist‐strapasthelaser
pickupcaneasilybedamagedbyrelativelylowlevelsofstatic.Whenthediscreading
mechanismorlaserpickupareremovedfromthechassis,itispreferabletofitaflexfoiland
useametalpapercliporsimilartobridgeallopenconnectionsasstaticprotectionwhen
handlingthepickup.

Removingtheloadingmechanismwithlaserpickup
Disconnectmainspower.
DisconnecttheflexfoilfromCON405ontheservoPCB.
Removethetwoscrewssecuringthemountingcradletothechassis.
Slidetheloaderandcradlebackinthechassistodisengagethefront,thenliftthe
completeassemblyfromthechassis.
Removingthecradle
OncethePCBhasbeenremoved,thecradlecanbeseparatedfromtheloaderafterremoving
thetwoself‐lockingnuts.
RemovingtheservoPCB
Inastaticsafeenvironment,disconnecttheflexfoilfromCON401ontheservoPCB.Usea
metalpapercliptoshorttheexposedendoftheflex‐foilandprotectfromstaticdamage.
DisconnectthecableplugsfromCON402,CON403andCON404.ThePCBsecuringscrewscan
nowberemovedandtheservoPCBliftedclear.
Replacingtheloadingmechanismwithlaserpickup
Replacementisgenerallyareversalofremoval,butnotethefollowingimportantsteps‐
OncetheservoPCBhasbeenfittedandtheflexfoilcablefromthelaserpickupconnectedto
CON401,thesolder‐shortthatprotectsthepickupfromstaticmustberemoved.Thisis
accessiblethroughthewindowontopoftheloaderasshown.
Removalofthesolder‐shortstaticprotection:
Oncethesolder‐shortisremoved,theloadercanbefittedtothecradleandthentothe
chassis.
Digitaloutputfaults
Thedigitaloutputdrivecircuitsarerelativelystraightforward.Ifthediscisplaying,checkthe
presenceofthedigitaloutputsignalfromtheDOBMpinofCON405ontheservoPCB.This
signalshouldthenappearonthemainPCBatIC601,thenIC604beforepassingthroughL402
tothedigitaloutputs.
RemovingthefrontpanelPCB
IfafaultisdiagnosedwhichrequirestheremovalofthefrontpanelPCB,proceedasfollows.
First,followingtheinstructionsabove,removetheloadingmechanism.Nowdisconnectthe
flexfoilrunningtothefrontpanelPCB.Finally,thecompletefrontpanelassemblyincluding
displayPCBmaynowbepressedforwardoutofthefrontofthechassis.Removethefixing

screwsandthefrontpanelPCBmaynowbeliftedoffthefrontpanelassembly.Theonlypart
availableforserviceofthisPCBistheremoteeye.IfthereareotherfaultswiththisPCBitwill
benecessarytoreplacethePCBassembly.

FlashSoftwareOverview
TheCDplayersfeatureupgradeablesoftwareforthecontrolsystem.ThemainPCBincludesa
microcontrollerwithinternalmemorythatincludesthesoftware.
Themicrocontrollerislabelledduringthemanufacturingprocesstoshowwhichsoftware
versionisinstalled.Ifthesoftwareversionisrevisedatsomepointthisindicationshouldbe
clearlydeletedwithacrossmarkedonthedevicelabel.Themostreliablemethodtocheckthe
softwareversion(withoutdismantlingtheplayer)istoreaditfromthedisplayasfollows‐
1. ConnectpowertotheunitandsettoStandby(powerlightred).
2. PressandholdtheStandbykey.
3. Thesoftwareversionwillbeshownonthedisplay.
Re‐programming
NOTE:Productsoftwaremustneverbereplacedwithanearlierversionthanalreadyinstalled.
TheCDplayersareprogrammedbyconnectingaUSBcabledirectlyfromthemainPCBtoa
computer.ThelocationoftheprogrammingconnectoronthecontrolPCBisarrowedinthe
pictureontheright.
CAUTION:Ensureyouhaveanewfirmwarefiletohandbeforestartingtheprocess.Never
disconnectthecableuntilthenewsoftwareisinstalled.
1. Disconnectthemainsfromtheproduct.
2. LocateSW702,amicroswitchnexttotheUSBconnector
showninthedrawing.
3. PressandholdSW702.
4. Connectamini‐USBcabletoafreeUSBportonacomputer.
5. Connectthemini‐USBcabletothesocketonthemainPCB.
6. TheRedLEDonthemainPCBwilllighttoindicatethatUSB
powerisavailable.
7. ReleaseSW702.
8. AnewwindowwillpopuponthePCwhichwillshowthe
currentfirmware.binfile.
9. Deletetheexistingfirmware.binfile.
10. Copythenewfirmware.binfilesuppliedbyCyrustothis
folder.
11. OncethefilehasbeencopiedremovetheUSBcable.
12. Powerupandcheckthenewsoftwareversionasdescribed
above.

MC‐BUSisasystemwhichprovidescommunicationbetweenthecontrolsystemsofanumberof
Cyrusproducts.Thecommunicationtakestheformofaserialdatastreamwhichissentfroma
'master'productandreceivedandrepeatedby'slave'products.Thedataisthuspassedfromone
producttoanotheraroundaloop.Themasterproductshouldthenreceivethemessageback
whichconfirmsthatloopconnectionshavebeencorrectlymade.TheCDplayerisa'slave'product
andlistensfor'CD'commandsfromthemasterproductintheloop(usuallyanamplifieror
surrounddecoder).
MC‐BUSinternalsignalrouting
MC‐BUScontrolisprovidedbythesystemmicrocontrollerIC701.Thesignalsarebufferedintoand
outofthisICasshowninthediagram,TheresistorbiasattheMC‐BUSinputensuresthattheline
idleshigh(+5V)ifnoMC‐BUSconnectionismadetoanotherproduct.
MC‐BUSsystemtests
TheMC‐BUSsystemcanbetestedbyconnectingtheCDplayerintoaknownworkingCyrus
system.NotethatMC‐BUSmustbeconnectedasaclosedloopasshowninthediagrambelow.It
isalsoimportanttoconnecttheaudiosignalcablesbetweencomponentstoprovideanadequate
groundreturnpathfortheMC‐BUSsignals.Switchonthepowertothesystemandsetall
componentstoStandby.SelectingtheCDinputontheamplifierorswitchingonasurround
decoderwillnowactivatetheCDplayer.WhentheamplifierissettoStandby,allother
componentsconnectedtotheMC‐BUSloopwillalsosettoStandby.
