BLACK BEAR HOIST
4. Preliminary Cautions Before Installation
4.1 Check for Completeness
Black Bear hoists/trolleys are manufactured under strict quality control and inspection.
Please check for following details of the hoist for completeness:
1) Hoist Body
2) Hook & Hook Holder
3) Load Chain / Hand Chain
4.2 Check for Specification
Please check for your specifications before use.
1) Capacity (Ton), Load Chain Length, Hand Chain Length
2) Contact manufacturer immediately if the specifications differ.
4.3 Areas of Application
1) This hoist is NOT explosion-proof. The hoist is NOT to be used in environments
that are open to potential explosions.
2) Please consult with manufacturer first if the hoist is going to be used in
environments with high (higher than 40°C) or low (lower than -20°C) temperatures,
or with high humidity (more than 90%), or environments that are open to chemicals
and other particular situations.
3) Observe temperature range. Metal parts of the hoist turn weak and could break in
low temperatures. Consult manufacturer if your are in doubt.
4) Do not use the hoist in high humidity environment.
Lifetime of the hoist will shorten if it is exposed to rain. If used outside, please
protect the hoist (entire equipment) with proper covers to avoid rain.

BLACK BEAR HOIST
6. Cautions
6.1 Preliminary Inspection
1) Do not use the hoist if the Safety Latch of hook has been broken/damaged.
2) Safety Latch must be completely closed before use.
3) There should not be any damages or deformation on the hook and chain.
4) All the fixed bolts and nuts should be attached and screwed in tightly.
5) The hook should revolve easily and smoothly.
6) There should not be any dirt or other unusual substances on the hoist.
6.2 Prohibition of Overload
1) Never lift a load that is heavier than the rated capacity of the hoist.
2) Always check for the capacity, written on the name plate of the hoist.
3) All Black Bear hoists are manufactured with consideration of its working area conditions and are tested
with a greater load than its rated safe working load.
4) However, overloading hoists is extremely dangerous as it is considered the same as removing safety
device. ALWAYS operate hoists within the safe working load.
6.3 Safety Latch of Hook
1) When loading the bottom hook, devices like wires and ropes and slings are often used. The Safety
Latch on the hook prevents these other devices to not come off from the hook creating a dangerous
lifting situation. Do NOT detach the Safety Latch from the hook.
6.4 Prohibition of Hoist Remodeling
1) Voluntary remodeling of the hoist by the user is strictly prohibited.
2) Use of this hoist as elevator (for both passenger and freight) is strictly prohibited.

6.5 Lifting
1) Never use Lifting Slings with lighter/lower capacity than the load being lifted. Always check for
any damages/deformations on Lifting Slings before use. Always consider lifting angels and lifting
mode when selecting slings.
2) To lift load safely, Lifting Sling with proper length and capacity should be used. Use Lifting Slings
that have sufficient load capacity for every operation.
3) Never suspend more than one load on a single hook.
4) Do not place any parts of the body (i.e. hands, fingers) inside the hook.
5) Do not force hook into place by thrashing or hammering.
6) The load (or rope/wire/sling) must be properly suspended in the saddle of the hook. If load or
sling is placed incorrectly, a dangerous situation may arise resulting in sling break causing load to
drop.
7) Never suspend the load or sling on the tip of the hook.
8) Always balance your lift. Ropes/Wires/Slings must not be tangled, slanted or twisted.
9) Never use the hoist as support or fixture.
10) Change the Lifting Sling if the Safety Latch does not close due to its (Lifting Sling) thickness.
11) When the angle of 2 Lifting Slings (or ropes) gets excessively wide (as they are suspended on a
hook), there are possibilities of the Lifting Slings falling off or breaking as the weight (applied
on Lifting Slings) gets bigger. For a safe operation, change the loading method or change the
Lifting Slings to longer one. When suspending load, the angle of sling (rope) should be less than
60°.
12) Never wind up the Load Chain around the load. It is dangerous because Load Chain has
weak horizontal pulling strength.

BLACK BEAR HOIST
6.6 Cautions During Lifting/Hoist Operation
1) Pay full attention to the load and the surroundings at all times when operating the hoist. The
hoist must not be loaded when not in use.
2) Be sure everyone is clear of the load path. Do not lift load over people.
3) Never use the hoist to lift or lower people. Do not stand or sit on a suspended load.
4) Never place your hands/feet under the load. Always be aware of overhead loads.
5) Never lift a load with greater capacity than that of the hoist. Check capacity of the hoist before
use. Also never pull or load from the side.
6) Do not operate hoists with twisted, tangled, or damaged chains.
7) Be certain that Load Chain is tightly pulled. Check the balance of the load by hoisting a little bit.
8) The hoist must hang centrally under the beam or under its suspension point.
9) The load/sling must be properly suspended in the saddle of the hook. Never suspend the load/sling on
the tip or end of the hook.
10) Do not swing/shake a suspended load. Do not cut or weld a load that is suspended in the
hoist.
11) Lifetime of the hoist will be shortened if it is exposed to rain. If used outside, cover the entire hoist
(and chain basket) to avoid rain.
12) It is very dangerous to lift a load by using 2 hoists at the same time as the weight might shift to
one side. Be certain that load is properly balanced and kept horizontal.
13) Stop the hoist immediately if chains are making unusual or excessive noise, blocking over the
load, or binding occurs.

7. Maintenance
-13 -
7.1 Initial Inspection
1) Change the lubricating grease in the gear box after first 500 hours of use. After 1st inspection, check
every 6 months and refill if necessary.
2) Do not install/operate hoist/trolley in humid environments/working areas.
3) Cover the entire hoist/trolley equipment when used/kept outside.
4) To inform other personnel in the working area, place a <DO NOT OPERATE> or <INSPECTION> sign
when hoist/trolley is under inspection.
7.2 Periodic Inspection and Adjustment
7.2.1 Daily Inspection
Check for following details before use (without any load suspended):
- Is there any unusual or excessive noise from the hoist?
- Is the Safety Latch of the bottom hook (of hoist) properly installed?
- Is the Load Chain lubricated with oil?

7.2.2 Monthly Inspection
1) Load Chain Test
When the chain (which the load will be suspended on) is rusted
or stretched out, replace the chain immediately! Rusted/stretched
chain causes potential danger/problems in operating the hoist.
Notice
Measure the diameter and inside length of the chain. If the measured lengths go over the
allowable limit, replace the chain. [ Refer to 7.5.1 ]
2) Hook Inspection
The hook will not be deformed or broken if it is used within the safe working load and complied
to this manual instructions. However, when used over long period of time, overloading the hook
may occur. Therefore, be certain to inspect the hook regularly. Replace the hook if the hook
gate is open or seems deformed in any other way.
Notice
Measure the hook opening length. Replace the hook if the length go over the allowable limit.
