maintenance should be performed only by

Factoryrecommendedprocedures,includedinthismanual,shouldbe
followed.Alwaysdisconnectelectricalpowerbeforeworkingonthe
unit.
Althoughshaftcouplingsorbeltdrivesaregenerallynotfurnishedby
themanufacturer,rotatingshafts,couplingsandbeltsmustbeprotected
withsecurelymountedmetalguardsthatareofsufficientthicknessto
provideprotectionagainstflyingparticlessuchaskeys,boltsand
couplingparts.Evenwhenthemotorisstopped,itshouldbeconsid-
ered“alive”aslongasitscontrollerisenergized.Automaticcircuitsmay
startthemotoratanytime.Keephandsawayfromtheoutputshaftuntil
themotorhascompletelystoppedandpowerisdisconnectedfromthe
controller.
Motorcontrolequipmentandelectroniccontrolsareconnectedto
hazardouslinevoltages.Whenservicingdrivesandelectroniccontrols,
therewillbeexposedcomponentsatorabovelinepotential.Extreme
careshouldbetakentoprotectagainstshock.Standonaninsulating
padandmakeitahabittouseonlyonehandwhencheckingcompo-
nents.Alwaysworkwithanotherpersonincaseofanemergency.
Disconnectpowerwheneverpossibletocheckcontrolsortoperform
maintenance.Besureequipmentisproperlygrounded.Wearsafety
glasseswheneverworkingonelectriccontrolorrotatingequipment.
Safety Guidelines
1. ThedrivemustbedisconnectedfromtheAClinebeforeany
serviceworkisdone.
2. The“Stop/Off”keyonthelocalcontrolpanelofthedrivedoesnot
disconnecttheequipmentfromtheAClineandisnottobeusedas
asafetyswitch.
3. Correctprotectivegroundingoftheequipmentmustbeestab-
lished.Theusermustbeprotectedagainstsupplyvoltageandthe
motormustbeprotectedagainstoverloadinaccordancewith
applicablenationalandlocalregulations.
4. Groundcurrentsarehigherthan3mA.
Warnings Against Unintended Start
1. WhilethedriveisconnectedtotheACline,themotorcanbe
broughttoastopbymeansofexternalswitchclosures,serialbus
commandsorreferences.Ifpersonalsafetyconsiderationsmakeit
necessarytoensurethatnounintendedstartoccurs,thesestops
arenotsufficient.
2. Duringprogrammingofparameters,themotormaystart.Be
certainthatnooneisintheareaofthemotorordrivenequipment
whenchangingparameters.
3. Amotorthathasbeenstoppedmaystartunexpectedlyiffaults
occurintheelectronicsofthedrive,orifanoverload,afaultinthe
supplyAClineorafaultinthemotorconnectionorotherfault
clears.
4. Ifthe“Local/Hand”keyisactivated,themotorcanonlybebrought
toastopbymeansofthe“Stop/Off”keyoranexternalsafety
interlock.

20motoroverloadprotectioninaccordancewithNECinsinglemotor
applications,whenparameter117issetfor“ETRTRIP1”,“ETRTRIP
2”,“ETR TRIP3”, or“ETR TRIP4”, andparameter 105is setfor
ratedmotor(nameplate)current.
Touching electrical parts may be fatal – even after equipment has
been disconnected from AC line. To be sure that capacitors have
fully discharged, wait 14 minutes after power has been removed
before touching any internal component.

General
Thespecificinstallationinstructionsmayvarydependinguponthe
modelofVLT6000Seriesbeinginstalled.Whenthisoccurs,themodel
canbeidentifiedbya“VLTType6XXX”number.Thisnumbercanbe
foundontherednameplateontheoutsideoftheleftsideofthedrive
enclosure,ortheoutsideoftherightsideofadrivewithanauxiliary
enclosure.AcrossreferencefromtheVLTTypetotheDanfoss
Grahammodelnumbercanbefoundonthenextpage.
Thedrivemustalwaysbeinstalledvertically.Toensurethatnoinjury
ordamageoccurs,thedrivemustalwaysbefirmlyattachedtothewall
orthefloorbeforefurtherinstallationworkiscarriedout.
Clearances
Thedriveiscooledbymeansofaircircula-
tion.Forpropercooling,theminimum
distancesaboveandbelowtheunitmustbe
maintainedasshowninthetablebelow.For
unitswithanauxiliaryenclosuremountedwith
thedriveonabackpanel,therequired
clearancesaremeasuredfromthetopand
bottomofthedrive,notthebackpanel.
Alldrivescanbemountedwithnosideclearance.VLT6350-6550
drivesrequire25inches(605mm)frontspaceforaccess.
AlldrivesexceptVLT 6002-6005,200to240VandVLT6002-6011,
380to460Vmustbemounteddirectlytothewallwithnospacers.This
istoensurethatairflowisincontactwiththeheatsinkallthewayfrom
thebottomofthedrive.Ifthisisnotpossible,ametalplateatleastas
largeasthebackofthedrivemustbefirmlymountedtothebackofthe
drive.SeetheCrossReferenceTableonthenextpagetoconvert
modelnumberstodrivetype.
AlldrivesexceptVLT6002-6005,200to240V
andVLT6002-6011,380to460Vmustbe
mounteddirectlytoasolidwallwithnospacers
betweenthedriveandthewall.
Sufficientspacemustbeleftinfrontofthedrivetoprovidefordoor
swingonunitswithahingeddoor.Inaddition,sufficientroommustbe
availableforinstallationandserviceaccess.Onunitswithanauxiliary
enclosure,theauxiliaryenclosuredoorwillhaveagreaterdoorswing
thanthedrive.Seethedimensionaldrawingsoftheauxiliaryenclosure
whichareincludedwiththedrive.
Plenum Mounting
ThedriveisULratedforplenummounting.Ifthedriveistobemounted
intheplenum,allowsufficientaccessforservicing.Allnormal
clearance,temperatureandhumiditylimitationsapply.
Grounding Plate
VLT Type6002-6005, 200 to240V and VLT 6002-6001, 380to 460 V
driveswithaNEMA1enclosurehaveaplasticbottomcoverwith
provisionforconduitentry.TomeetULrequirements,themetal
groundingplatemustbeinplaceabovetheplasticbottomcover.Itmust
begroundedtothechassis,andtheconduitgroundedtoit.Ifthe
groundingplateisnotfactoryinstalled,itmustbeinstalledinthedrives
thathaveaplasticbottompaneltoensurepropergroundingofthe
conduittotheenclosure.Connectthegroundwirefromthegrounding
platetothegroundtabmarkedwiththegroundsymbol.
ThistabislocatedneartheAClineterminalstrip.Mountthebottom
coveronthecontrolunit.
Shielded Wires
Wirestocontrolsignalsshouldbeshieldedtoreduceradio frequency
noiseinterference.
WhenRFIisaconcern,shieldedcableshouldbeusedbetweenthe
driveandthemotor.
Ifunshieldedcontrolwiresareused,controlinputsaresubjecttosignal
disturbances.Suchdisturbancesmayaffectdriveoperation.Extreme
noiselevelsmaydisturbthemicroprocessorofthecontrolcard.
Theshieldofthecontrolwiresmustbegroundedatthecableclampat
thebottomofthedrive,buttheshieldmustcontinuewiththecableallthe
wayuptothecontrolcard.Theshieldisnottobeconnectedtoanyof
theterminalsonthecontrolcard.Forsafetyreasons,theinsulation
aroundtheshieldshouldonlyberemovedwhereitisconnectedtothe
cableclamp.Theinsulationshouldbeleftontheshieldbetweenthe
clampandtheterminals.
Generallyspeaking,allconductorscomingfromashielded control
cablemustbeasshortaspossible.Longconductorendsattractnoise.
Theshieldmustbeconnectedtothechassisbymeansofthecable
clamp.Longpigtailsontheshieldreducetheeffectivenessoftheshield.

Alldrivesmusthaveinputfusesinstalledinthepowersupplytothe
drive.Thesefusesmaybespecifiedasanoptiontothedriveand
suppliedbyDanfossGraham.Ifspecified,theywillbeinstalledby
DanfossGrahaminanenclosureexternaltothedrivewhichmay
includeotheroptionalfeatures.IfnotsuppliedbyDanfossGraham,
theymustbesuppliedbytheinstallerofthedriveatthetimeof
installation.
Therequiredtypeoffuseforeachdrivesizeisshowninthetable
below.Thefuseratingshownisboththemaximumandtherecom-
mendedfuserating.
Thedrivesaresuitableforuseoncircuitscapableofdeliveringnot
morethan100,000RMSsymmetricalamps,500voltsmaximum(600

When multiple motors are used, VLT 6000 elec-
tronic thermal relay cannot be used to provide
individual motor protection. A separate motor over-
load must be supplied for each motor.
Ifthemultiplemotorsareofsignificantlydifferentsizes,startingproblems
mayoccur.Thisisbecausethehigherelectricalresistanceofsmaller
motorswillrequiremorestartvoltagethanlargermotors.

Electrical Noise
Ingeneral,electricalnoisecanbedividedintotwoforms:wire-borne
electromagneticinterference(EMI), andradiatingradiofrequency
interference(RFI).
UsingshieldedmotorcablesreducesRFIbutincreasesEMI.Thisis
becauseshieldedwireshaveagreatercapacitancethanunshielded
wires.Unshieldedinputpowerconnectionstothedrivegeneratemore
noiseintheradiofrequencyrangeontheACline.Theshieldreduces
theradiatednoise,butincreasesthelow-frequencyelectromagnetic
noiseontheACline.But,sincethenoisecurrentistakenbacktothe
unitthroughtheshield,onlyasmallelectromagneticfieldisgenerated
fromshieldedmotorwires.
WithanEMIfilter,thenoiselevelontheAClinewillbereducedto
aboutthesamelevelforshieldedandunshieldedwiresalike.
Connectthemotorwiringshield,ifused,intheenclosureofthedriveas
wellasatthemotor.Useshieldbracketstoavoid“pigtail”shieldends.
Evenshort“pigtails”increasetheshield’simpedanceathigher
frequencies,whichreducestheshield’seffectandincreasesthenoise
produced.
Itisgenerallyeasierandlesscomplicatedtouseunshieldedmotor
wiresthanshieldedcables.Ifunshieldedwiresareused,theRFIwill
begreater.But,sincethestrengthoftheradiatedsignaldecreaseswith
distancefromthesignalsource,radiatednoiseisgenerallynota
problem.
Toreducethenoiselevelfromthetotalsystem(drive+installation)
makethemotorwiringasshortaspossible.
Provideseparateconduits,orraceways,forpower,motorandcontrol
wiringtoprovidethegreatestimmunityfromdistortion.
Galvanic Isolation
Galvanicisolationoffersprotectionfromelectricshock.Allcontrol
terminalsofallVLT6000drives,andterminals1through3oftherelay
output,offergalvanicisolationaslongastheRFIswitch(ifprovided)is
intheONposition.ThegalvanicisolationintheVLT6000conformsto
theEuropeanstandardEN50178.(Seefigurebelow.)
Thecomponentsthatmakeupthegalvanicisolationare:
1. Powersupply,includingsignalisolation.
2. GatedrivefortheIGBTs,thetriggertransformersandopto-
couplers.
