1.0 HOW THE CALOREX ‘PP16AMY’ WORKS.
The Calorex PP16AMY is an air to water heat pump at is designed to provide indirect low pressure hot water (LPHW) to swimming pool air handling units
at contain a water to water heat exchanger. The PP16AMY is an alternative to a fossil fuel boiler and can provide flow temperatures up to 55°C.
The PP16AMY is designed to work in ambient temperatures from-15°C to 35°C.
The PP16AMY is supplied wi an adjustable digital ermostat at controls water temperature and defrosting. For flexible installation e ermostat has a
choice of two positions. Details of how to change e position are shown later in e manual (section 2.4)
Terminals in e PP16AMY can initiate a water pump. These terminals are marked “PUMP RUN”. See section 4.2 for more details
The PP16AMY can be initiated from an external source using e terminals marked “REMOTE ON/OFF INTERLOCK”. See section 4.2 for more details
The PP16AMY is fitted wi a scroll compressor and owlet fan, bo of which is are known for quiet running.
A six minute compressor start delay timer is incorporated to protect e compressor.
The PP16AMY has integral safety devices at protect it from internal and external faults. Indicator lamps indicate e operating mode.

1.1 FUNCTION
The Calorex Indirect heater provides ermodynamic heating by means of
a vapour compression cycle, (similar to at employed in a conventional
refrigerator), in addition to acting as an active solar collector.
Coecient of Performance
The eciency of a Heat Pump is usually called its ‘Coecient of Performance’
- (C.O.P.) which is simply a ratio of heat output to energy input, bo being
expressed in kW. Thus a Heat Pump absorbing 1 kW of electricity, collecting 4
kW of energy from e air, and delivering 5 kW of heat to e water is said to
have a C.O.P. of 5:1.
This ratio will vary according to e temperature of e water and e ambient
air.

THE HEAT PUMP CYCLE
1. THE EVAPORATOR collects e heat from e outside ambient air,
pre-heated by e sun. In e Calorex Indirect pool heater, high volumes
of outside air are drawn into e unit by e fan expelled rough e
evaporator fins. The evaporator has liquid refrigerant passing rough it
which is at a considerably lower temperature an e ambient air.
Therefore e air gives up its heat to e refrigerant which en
vaporises.This preheated vapour now travels to-
3. THE CONDENSER where it is surrounded
by cooler water. The heat is given up to e cooler water and e now
cooler refrigerant returns to its former liquid state but still under high
pressure from e compressor. This pressure is released by passing
liquid rough-
4. THE EXPANSION DEVICE and from ere, now at
normal pressure, it is returned to e evaporator and
e cycle starts again.
2. THE COMPRESSOR where it is

1.2 FEATURES OF THE CALOREX PP16AMY
• A purpose built Monobloc heat pump designed to provide indirect
low pressure hot water (max 55°C) for swimming pool heating.
• Reverse cycle defrost providing operating capability in air
temperatures as low as -15°C.
• Intuitive PLC control wi digital display of actual and set point
temperatures.
• Visual operating status indication.
• Interlocks for water pump control and remote on/off.
The digital ermostat can be mounted one of two sides of e PP16AMY and
controls and maintains e water temperature and defrosting and incorporates
indicator lamps.

a)Ensure heat pump on site is as ordered, i.e. model, electrical supply and
factory fitted options.
b) Inspect unit for damage, in particular inspect e evaporator (finned side)
to ensure at it is undamaged. (Minor indentations in e fins do not affect
performance). If severely damaged, endorse delivery note in presence of e
driver and send a recorded delivery letter to transport company giving details.
Protect unit if installation is delayed.
The heat pump is supplied wi accessories which aid installation. On delivery
e accessories are in a plastic bag in e heat pump electric box. (See section
4.2 for lid removal).
2.1 ACCESSORIES
These accessories are as follows:
4 x rubber feet - Fit ese under e metal feet of e heat pump to help
reduce e effects of vibration.
2 x Condensate drain piece - Condensate drain pieces are supplied suitable for
3/4” or 20mm pipe. Use whichever piece fits e drain pipe required. Glue e
relevant piece to e driptray outlet and en fit en condensate drain piping.
2.2 SITING
a) Provide a firm level base capable of supporting operational weight of unit;
spread load if mounted on timber floor.
b) Ensure water cannot collect under unit, it is recommend at units are
installed on plins 100mm above finished floor level. This also aids condensate
drainage.
c) Allow adequate clearance to service panels on unit; recommend 500mm
minimum.
d) All Calorex heat pumps are by design as quiet as is practical, however due
consideration should be given to siting e heat pump in order to minimise e
noise coming from e machine, for example by positioning e machine so at
e inlet/outlets are parallel to occupied premises.
e) Ensure loose debris such as leaves, grass cuttings, etc will not block air inlet
grilles.
f) Consider protection from extreme weaer conditions if installed externally, i.e.
lean-to-cover or building.

Due consideration must be given to air flow when installing e PP16AMY. Do
not be obstruct e inlet or outlet and ensure discharged air cannot recirculate
to e inlet. (See below)
Required free areas to provide airflow to and from heat pumps when installed in
an enclosed area or where required to pass air rough a wall etc.

IMPORTANT
If multiple units are installed in an enclosed area en e inlet free areas
required for each unit can be added togeer to form one inlet aperture.
BUT discharge from each unit must be kept separate and must not be
incorporated into one common duct system.

2.4 CHANGING THE POSITION OF THE DIGITAL
THERMOSTAT
On delivery, e digital controller is filled above e water in/out connections.
If is does not suit e installation e digital controller can be moved to e
adjacent panel following e procedure set out below.
1. Isolate e heat pump from e electricity supply.
2. Remove e lid of e heat pump (see section 4.0).
3. Remove e plugs connecting e wiring from e back of e ermostat.
4. Undo e white plastic clips securing e heat pump to e panel. This is
done by pressing e clips in at e sides.
5. Remove e ermostat rough e panel.
6. Remove e dummy ermostat from its position following e same meod
described in point 4.
7. Put e ermostat and dummy ermostat in eir new positions and secure
wi white clips.
8. Re connect e connectors to e ermostat taking care at e red
markers in e plugs and sockets are correctly aligned.
9. Replace e lid and reconnect e heat pump to e electrical supply.

3.0 PLUMBING
a) The PP16AMY water connections on e machine are 3/4” BSPM stubs.
b) The PP16AMY is supplied wi bungs fitted in e water connection
fittings. These need to be removed before e PP16AMY is installed.
c) The PP16AMY should be connected upstream of oer heaters.
d) Suitable breakable couplings should be installed local to e heat pump.
e) If e PP16AMY is installed at a lower level an e heating installation
en isolation valves should be fitted.
f) A drain valve or plug should be fitted to e lower pipe to facilitate drain
down in e winter period in case it is necessary to winterise e unit.
g) The condensate drain at e base of e unit collects condensation from
e evaporator fins. This should run away to waste via 3/4” domestic waste
piping. It is erefore necessary to ensure at e PP16AMY is placed on a
level plin so at e condensate water can run away wi adequate fall to
waste ie 1/2” per foot minimum and must incorporate a ‘U’ trap so at e
drip tray does not overflow inside e PP16AMY.
i) When e pipework installation is complete e pump supporting e
LPHW circuit should be switched on and e system tested for leaks. Also
check e filter gauge to see at ere is not an excessive increase in back
pressure. If everying is en working normally e LPHW system is ready
for use.
j) All pipework must be adequately supported wi allowance expansion/
contraction especially any plastic pipework used to run away e condensate
water from e driptray.
k) Do not route water pipes across service access panels or air inlet/outlets.
l) The water circuits to and from e PP16AMY unit should be capable of
maintaining e specified water flow limits required by e machine.
m) Water quality must be maintained not only relating to solids, etc but for
pH between 7.4 - 7.8.
n) See Warranty Exclusions section 9.0 for total list of water quality limits.

3.1 DETERMINING WATER FLOW
Installation of a flow meter
It is recommended at a flow meter is installed in e pipework between e
buffer tank and e heat pump to enable e water flow rough e PP16AMY
to be set at e correct flow rate. See section 7.0 for e correct water pressure
drop and recommended flow rate.

4.0 ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION
ELECTRICAL SAFETY
It is important to ensure at all aspects of e installation comply wi e latest
I.E.E. Regulations.
It is also important to ensure at any remote devices which terminate
wiin e pool hall are of e type and voltage as specified in e latest I.E.E.
Regulations.
The machine should be installed in accordance wi EMC2004/108/EC.
PROTECTED SUPPLY
Whilst not mandatory, Calorex recommend at an R.C.C.B. is always fitted or
at e supply is to local electricity auority recommendations. The supply to
e machine should incorporate fuses or motor rated circuit breakers (Type C)
to specified rating (see data sheet) H.R.C. fuses are recommended. An isolator
must be fitted wiin clear view of e machine and not more an 2 metres
away. The isolator must have a minimum of 3mm air gap when in e off
position.
INCONSISTENT ELECTRICAL SUPPLY.
The following limits of operation must not be exceeded if Calorex machines are
to be guaranteed eier in performance or warranty terms :-
Voltage single phase - 207V min, 253V max
Frequency - 47.5Hz min, 52.5Hz max.
N.B The voltage must be measured at e heat pump mains terminals wi e
fan and compressor running.
CORRECT CABLE SIZING
The cable supplying electricity to a machine wi a given load must increase in
cross sectional area (CSA) as e leng increases in order at e voltage drop
wiin e cable does not exceed recommended limits.
Cable sizing should be calculated by an approved electrician wi due
consideration to I.E.E. and local codes of practice.
IMPORTANT
The use should be made aware at THE WHOLE installation should be isolated when working on ANY PART.

These terminals, numbered 14 and 15 receive e “Boiler Go” signal from a
pool water heat pump wi integral LPHW coil or a domestic heating system

These terminals, numbered 18 and 19 can be connected to water circulating
pump.
The PP16AMY is supplied wi a 10m water probe. On delivery e sensor
detects e water temperature on e water in pipe at e condenser.
It may be desirable to change e position of e sensor to a buffer tank. A hole
above e water out connection is present to allow for e lead to be run out
rough e cabinet. The sensor lead can be extended up to 50m but an offset
will need to be programmed into e Digital Thermostat. This should be done
by e installer or service engineer when e PP16AMY is commissioned.
4.2 INTERLOCK TERMINALS

4.3 POOL PUMP SYNCHRONISATION
For installations where e filter pump, which also provides water to your heat
pump, is controlled by a time clock (supplied by e installer) your Calorex heat
pump can override “pump off” periods set on e time clock so at e filter
pump will run if your swimming pool requires heating. By doing so your filter
pump will only run when:
a) A block period of pump “running” has been set on e time clock for filtration
purposes.
b) The pool requires heating.
This feature operates by overriding e filter pump time clock for ree minutes
each hour so at water is pumped rough e heat pump.
If during is sampling period e heat pump detects a need for water heating
it will continue to override e time clock until e swimming pool temperature
is satisfied. If water heating is not required e filter pump will turn off aer e
ree minute sampling period and not restart until e next hourly sampling
period or time clock pre set run time. This feature will reduce filter pump run
time and consequently save energy as well as unnecessary filter pump wear
and tear.
A pair of volt free terminals (numbered 14 and 15) are available to allow for e
heatpump to be switched on or off remotely.

5.0 HEAT PUMP MALFUNCTION
WARNING: Isolate heat pump electrically before entering heat pump or
removing panels.
The user check list should be carried out before initiating a service call.
Do not attempt to interfere wi any internal control settings as ese have
been factory calibrated and sealed.
Any sign of abnormal operation such as water dripping should be reported
immediately to e installer.

If e ermostat appears to be dead or reading incorrectly, check at e
connectors in e back of e digital ermostat are not loose. See section 2.4

6.0 REGULAR PLANNED MAINTENANCE
Operations to be carried out during a regular planned maintenance visit are as
follows:
1. Clean e evaporator. (This action may be required more frequently an
regular servicing).
2. Check operation and condition of fan and compressor.
4. Check capacitor tolerances.
5. Check condition of all heat exchangers/evaporators.
6. Check refrigeration system parameters.
7. Check operation of control valves.
8. Check for water leaks.
9. Check drip trays and internal drain lines for blockages and clear.
10. Check operation of controls and calibrate as necessary.
11. Check operation of interlocks in use.
12. Final check on overall operation of unit.
13. Indicate on report any faults found or causes for concern.
14. Recommended service frequency: 1 visit per year.
6.1 REMOVAL OF SERVICE PANELS
Removal of e service panels is done in e following way.
1. Undo e screws at e end of e ABS cover. Li and slide e cover back
so at e bracket exits e slots at e opposite end of e unit.
2. The spreader bar across e wid of e heat pump is secured wi screws
rough e top of e evaporator and fan panels. To remove eier of ese
panels e spreader bar needs to be unscrewed.
3. Remove e screws securing e panel along e bottom of e panel.
4. The panel can now be lied upwards off spacers which retain e panel in
keyhole slots.
IMPORTANT: The electric box is also supported by e spreader bar so it will
eier have to be removed or rested on top of e heat pump.
